So, I apologize if I’m asking a stupid question. I am pretty sure my HDD died. Would this process allow me to boot into MacOS if I split up the drives? What if I want to replace the HDD with a new one? What do I need to know?

I have a 2014 mac mini running OS 14.3. It has a Fusion drive but the 5400RPM part of the drive is very dodgy. I split the Fusion drive and im only using the 80Gb SSD part of it, works very well and it does not need more than 80Gb because everything it accesses is on a RAID on my M1 via sharing
I have an iMac 2019 Model with 127gb SSD and 2TD HDD and it was setup as fusion by default. My logicboard broke and luckily my technician repaired the board but he accidentally formatted the SSD. He has removed the HDD before repairing. Now my SSD has new Mac OS on it and my external HDD shows up in Disk Utility as unknown 2TB. I am able to recover previous data on it using a recovery tool but all files are randomly named and some of them are broken. Is there any change i can get my HDD's original state back so that i can browse the data like it was on the fusion drive ?
Jessie., do you have to use a Apple bluetooth mouse and keyboard to boot to OCLP installation media ? Im reloading iMac (Early) 2008 and when I get to the boot EFI screen and select OCLP EFI drive it boots but then displays a mouse and keyboard and will not progress to the next install step. Im using a windows usb keyboard and mouse. Thanks
Hi. I need your help. My Mac Mini 2012 with Fusion Drive today made a strange sound from inside . Something clicks in the HDD area. When try to boot the system, a crossed-out circle appears after the logo. The system does not boot and constantly click-click in the hard drive area like an old nazi enigma. )) How can this be fixed?

I replaced the Fusion Drive on my 2017 iMac with a new internal SSD using an ifixit kit. It works well. Can I merge the 1TB SSD with the 28GB as you showed. It’s annoying as I have to eject the 28GB if the computer goes off (eg power failure). For some reason the smaller SSD shows as disk 0?

@@danielthorgren you can do that as far as I know, but a Fusion Drive doesn’t make sense for 2x SSD or NVMe as they’re too close together regarding speed that the fusion will slow it down
@@JessiesFlying Thanks for replying! I've been searching the internet today and find one guy who changed the nvme. He installed iOS on the new nvme and left the hdd for storage. They where not set as a fusion drive and where working as individual drivers. I'm not sure how happy the new macOS is about this setting and he had to install the operation system from a usb stick due to that the new nvme didn't support the recovery mode.
Thank you for such a nice, clear, concise workshop on this problematic topic. After installing my fusion-drive iMac in another room, I got the no-entry logo on every subsequent attempt to boot the machine. Re-installing the OS from the internet won't work, as the drive is simply not detected by the installer. The only solution, at this point, is the one you so aptly demonstrate here (Disk Utility DOES detect the hard drive... but in two separate units, as you show here). Alas, there is a number of files I didn't get to backup before this predicament. Would you be so kind as to suggest some data-recovery strategies in a situation like this? Many thanks!
@JessiesFlying - No. At least, nothing detectable right now. But Disk Utility does see disk01 and disk02. Thank you for your kind assistance in this matter.
@@LeopardConstant so if the fusion link is broken as you see 2 drives maybe delete the one drive with no important data and install macOS there, so you can recover your files. Or get the drive out and use it with an external enclosure on another Mac
Great video. I did upgrade my father's friend 21.5'' iMac (late 2013) RAM from 8 GB to 16 GB and switched the 1 TB HDD to a 1TB SSD. I did not know how Fusion Drive works, I thought it could be just a hybrid HDD/SSD as one piece. Is the 28 GB internal SSD for Fusion Drive now lost, since it was married to the 1 TB HDD (still intact as it was outside of the iMac), which I removed, or can I still get access to the 28 GB internal SSD without opening the iMac again? By the way, there is an external hard drive with Time Machine Backups. Is the 28 GB internal SSD faster than a 1 TB Crucial MX500 Sata SSD? Can I install MacOS on the 28 GB SSD and would that be faster? The 28 GB disk is 10 years old though and the 1 TB SSD is brand new.
You should be able to use the internal SSD on its own but then the external HDD has to be deleted if you want to use it again as the Fusion is broken. I wouldn’t recommend using it anymore as it’s only 28GB

If I want to restore fusion drive, you stated that I have to back up both drives. I understand that I need to delete both drives before recreating fusion drive. But only the regular SSD I am using as main drive has Mac Os 14.3 and new NVME SSD has no Mac Os. Do you know what is in the 32GB NVME drive ? any Mac Os inside and if so how do I clone or move the files into the new NVME drive ? My concern is if I delete regular SSD drive, there would be no Mac Os, I think, so I cannot boot into iMac any more. What is the benefit of restoring to fusion drive ? @@JessiesFlying So interesting because all I did was the first step to reset the Fusion Drive. Now that I have my Mac all restored, in normal operation mode I go into disk utility and it shows the 23gb drive with 115.8 mb on it that shows “PCI express internal disk volume - Mac OS extended (journaled) & an untitled 1TB drive with 19.07gb on that is labeled “APFS data volume”. Does that sound correct? For some reason I think that drives got reversed. Thanks
When I was doing the reset Fusion Drive step, I noticed the my drives where labeled wrong. My rotational disk was labeled 1 and my solid state 0. Is there ac way to flip them around? When I’m in FINDER, the drive that is displayed is the Fusion Drive and there are no files on it
@@JessiesFlying I see the problem. It says rotational disk 1 will be used as the main (faster) device and solid state disk 0 will be used as a secondary (larger) device. I have NO idea how they got reversed. This is a real pickle.
I am running my 2014 Mac on an external SSD now but still have the old 3TB HD installed, to use this as storage or Time Machine backup, should I remove the Fusion link as described? But of a newly to macs but managed to install Sonoma following your guides so far. 👍
Sorry what I meant was the link between the original HD and the fusion SSD so the original HD is just seen as a basic HD si I can use it as storage instead.

Hi, awesome video. i encountered a problem after upgrading mac mini late 2012 to a new ssd from the original drive (fusion) .however, the old drive still appear as present ( phantom drive ) showing 1 Tb (and not just 20 something gb ) ? any ideas how to takle that ?
Very informative but I have a question, I have just replaced the Fusion Drive on my Mac mini, it was a simple process, without splitting the drive, I just removed the old drive and fitted a new drive and went into recovery mode and it all worked well, if I strip the iMac down to the Fusion Drive and do the same will that work?
Hi jessie i upgraded my mates iMac 2013, and put in a second drive 2TB samsung pro in the fusion slot where it was missing, both drives are SSD were showing as split, when i installed Sonoma with OPCL patcher on the main drive 4TB ssd, the second drive in the fusion slot does not appear anymore. and i dont know hot to get back, hopefully there is away without deleting the main HD drive with the operating system.
It used to say fusion drive and show up in disk utility now it doesn’t, that was after i pgraded from Ventura to Sonoma, went back to Ventura and still not showing the Fusion Drive, I thought it was the updated OPCLP updates??

I have a 2017 5K iMac that had a 3TB Fusion drive. The HDD was getting old so, since I just bought a Mac Studio, I bought a 2TB HDD and swapped it for the old 3TB HDD. However, I did no prep to the Fusion drive. Right now I'm having difficulty resetting the Fusion drive. The resetFusion command in Terminal doesn't show the SSD, only the HDD.
Also, Disk Utility shows both drives (SSD and HDD) with Untitled on the 2TB drive as disk2s2, and Untitled on the 128GB SSD as disk0s2. But diskutil resetFusion in Terminal only shows the Rotational drive listed, not the SSD. Must Untitled on the SSD be disk 0s2 and Untitled on the HDD disk1s2?
@@JessiesFlying Thank you very much for the reply. Yes. I've done all that multiple times. Gemini AI thinks it's possible that Ventura may have some issues/differences with resetFusion. Any thoughts on that theory? Should I try going back a couple of versions of macOS? Maybe High Sierra or Mojave?
@@JessiesFlying I haven't yet. One of the keys, apparently, is the order of the disk identifiers. The SSD is disk0s2, but Gemini AI says that the physical HDD must have the identifier of disk1s1. As noted, it is disk 2s2. disk 1s1 is a disk image with the macOS base system on it which I believe is the system that is created when booting from Command R. The drives are both freshly erased.
Off Topic: I think this is the longest period of no update from OCLP ive ever seen. Are things just that stable that there is nothing to change ? Just curious. My system is working great !
I have a failing fusion drive, currently booted from an external disk. When I write: diskutil coreStorage list, I get in return: No CoreStorage logical volume groups found. I want to separate the fusion drive so I can find out which drive is failing. Currently in disk utility I get only the 1TB drive but the volume still appears as solid state (rather than fusion drive).
@@JessiesFlying thanks for the reply. In order to do that I would have to separate the screen first. Not that easy so need to first purchase a kit to do so. What i do not understand though is why I can't use the 1TB drive by itself. Every time I copy something over the computer crashes (almost) immediately. As long as I use the external drive everything is working.

@@JessiesFlying Right now, the internal SSD installed behind the mother board (hard access) is 128 Go then I've added a 2 To SSD. I'm still not sure to understand the advantage to fusion two SSD's unless the SSD-NVme offers more speed than the SSD-SATA. Of course replacing any HDD with SSD does considerably accelerate the iMac but once two SSD's then what are the pros and cons to fusion two SSDs ?

Hello! Can i use Time machine the same way on unsupported iMac(late 2012) with Sonoma 14.3 like normal way? I mean, if I'm making TM backup to an external HD, than in case of trouble could I put back the whole system and all the data like it would be on an officially supported Mac?

Is the fusion drive ssd using the m2 pci slot? Also Ive heard changing the mechanical drive may mess up the fan sensor and the fan will run at full speed. Im using 2019 27” iMac 19,1 with Fusion Drive.
@@JessiesFlyingHi Jessie. I came across this thread while searching for an answer to my particular problem. I am running a 2019 27” iMac like the poster above. It originally had a 2Tb Fusion Drive. It started to run slower and slower then eventually became unusable. I brought it to the local Apple Certified Reseller, where bought it in 2019. They installed a 2TB SSD to replace the old Fusion Drive and the old small SSD shows as a seperate drive. Unfortunately this did not solve the problem and they found the fan was faulty and had damaged the Logic board. 1 replacement logic board later and another 2TB SSD and things looked better. Alas though it has now slowed to a virtual halt again. Just about useable but soooo slow. The tech cannot figure out what the problem is. My 2019 iMac now runs slower than my old 2013 MacBook Pro. Would you have any idea what might be causing this? My next step is a complete fresh install to see if it a software problem, but that is a last resort. Thanks for any ideas or things too look for. @@robkennedyphotography1766 so is the fusion drive still set (shown as 1 drive) or as 2 drives.... then i would reset the fusion drive (but backup first, as all data will be lost) and then do a fresh install...
...and then there were also disks which combined an ssd (cache) and hdd directly (I have such a disk in my OCL-patched MacBook Pro 17" as a second drive); first drive is an SSD, of course ;)
I think, it‘s not very reasonable to keep the fusion drive, once you replaced the hdd with an ssd, because no point in switching data in beteween two drives, once both are ssd, it would only take capacity of the cpu

no, if your HDD died you can install a new one and create a new Fusion Drive with this method, but your data is unfortunately lost...

You need a USB 2.0 hub in between. But I don’t recommend such old Mac’s with Ventura or Sonoma

Splitting should be the same procedure, but creating might be different on older macOS’s

But only the regular SSD I am using as main drive has Mac Os 14.3 and new NVME SSD has no Mac Os. Do you know what is in the 32GB NVME drive ? any Mac Os inside and if so how do I clone or move the files into the new NVME drive ? My concern is if I delete regular SSD drive, there would be no Mac Os, I think, so I cannot boot into iMac any more. What is the benefit of restoring to fusion drive ? Both of my SSD drives have much faster speed than regular HDD, 3, 500 Mbps and 550 Mbps respectively. Even if I passed the stage of restoring fusion drive, how do I install my files to fusion drive ? I think carbon copy cloner cannot do that any more like in old days since Os Big Sur. Please advise if I should do separate drives as Mac and window and if you can do a video about that I am very willing to see and discuss. I have closed up my iMac after SSDs upgrade before your video released a day ago so I don't want to open it again if that is not worthwhile doing it again. I would appreciate your advice. Setting up a Fusion Drive doesn’t make sense with 2 SSD it’s only useful for slow HDDs - so keep it as it is

i have a late 2015 27" imac 5k i think the 2 tb hdd is going out if i split the drives can i run the computer on just the 128gb ssd from the fusion drive trying to avoid opening it up as i dont have much installed anyways

@@JessiesFlying So interesting because all I did was the first step to reset the Fusion Drive. Now that I have my Mac all restored, in normal operation mode I go into disk utility and it shows the 23gb drive with 115.8 mb on it that shows “PCI express internal disk volume - Mac OS extended (journaled) & an untitled 1TB drive with 19.07gb on that is labeled “APFS data volume”. Does that sound correct? For some reason I think that drives got reversed. Thanks
When I was doing the reset Fusion Drive step, I noticed the my drives where labeled wrong. My rotational disk was labeled 1 and my solid state 0. Is there ac way to flip them around? When I’m in FINDER, the drive that is displayed is the Fusion Drive and there are no files on it

@@JessiesFlying I see the problem. It says rotational disk 1 will be used as the main (faster) device and solid state disk 0 will be used as a secondary (larger) device. I have NO idea how they got reversed. This is a real pickle.
I am running my 2014 Mac on an external SSD now but still have the old 3TB HD installed, to use this as storage or Time Machine backup, should I remove the Fusion link as described? But of a newly to macs but managed to install Sonoma following your guides so far. 👍
There should not be any fusion link between the internal and the external drive… so why remove the internal link?
Sorry what I meant was the link between the original HD and the fusion SSD so the original HD is just seen as a basic HD si I can use it as storage instead.

Hi, awesome video. i encountered a problem after upgrading mac mini late 2012 to a new ssd from the original drive (fusion) .however, the old drive still appear as present ( phantom drive ) showing 1 Tb (and not just 20 something gb ) ? any ideas how to takle that ?

Very informative but I have a question, I have just replaced the Fusion Drive on my Mac mini, it was a simple process, without splitting the drive, I just removed the old drive and fitted a new drive and went into recovery mode and it all worked well, if I strip the iMac down to the Fusion Drive and do the same will that work?

If you’ve set up the Fusion Drive just boot from USB installer with OpenCore and install macOS - it will only show up as one Fusion Drive
Hi jessie i upgraded my mates iMac 2013, and put in a second drive 2TB samsung pro in the fusion slot where it was missing, both drives are SSD were showing as split, when i installed Sonoma with OPCL patcher on the main drive 4TB ssd, the second drive in the fusion slot does not appear anymore. and i dont know hot to get back, hopefully there is away without deleting the main HD drive with the operating system.
Check in disk utility if it’s under “Fusion Drive”. If yes you can only split them by deleting. If they’re separate, try to format only the small one

I have a 2017 5K iMac that had a 3TB Fusion drive. The HDD was getting old so, since I just bought a Mac Studio, I bought a 2TB HDD and swapped it for the old 3TB HDD. However, I did no prep to the Fusion drive. Right now I'm having difficulty resetting the Fusion drive. The resetFusion command in Terminal doesn't show the SSD, only the HDD.
Also, Disk Utility shows both drives (SSD and HDD) with Untitled on the 2TB drive as disk2s2, and Untitled on the 128GB SSD as disk0s2. But diskutil resetFusion in Terminal only shows the Rotational drive listed, not the SSD. Must Untitled on the SSD be disk 0s2 and Untitled on the HDD disk1s2?

@@JessiesFlying I haven't yet. One of the keys, apparently, is the order of the disk identifiers. The SSD is disk0s2, but Gemini AI says that the physical HDD must have the identifier of disk1s1. As noted, it is disk 2s2. disk 1s1 is a disk image with the macOS base system on it which I believe is the system that is created when booting from Command R. The drives are both freshly erased.
Off Topic: I think this is the longest period of no update from OCLP ive ever seen. Are things just that stable that there is nothing to change ? Just curious. My system is working great !

I have a failing fusion drive, currently booted from an external disk. When I write: diskutil coreStorage list, I get in return: No CoreStorage logical volume groups found. I want to separate the fusion drive so I can find out which drive is failing. Currently in disk utility I get only the 1TB drive but the volume still appears as solid state (rather than fusion drive).
@@christophmuller1556 what if you open the iMac and simply disconnect the main drive to test the NVMe part with diskutil after booting from USB…?
@@JessiesFlying thanks for the reply. In order to do that I would have to separate the screen first. Not that easy so need to first purchase a kit to do so. What i do not understand though is why I can't use the 1TB drive by itself. Every time I copy something over the computer crashes (almost) immediately. As long as I use the external drive everything is working.

My iMac (late 2013 27 inches) has HDD and internal SDD which were meant as Fusion drive so if I replace HDD by another SDD => total of two SDD's inside.
I would still do a Fusion Drive as the internal is way too small to be useful on its own
@@JessiesFlying Right now, the internal SSD installed behind the mother board (hard access) is 128 Go then I've added a 2 To SSD. I'm still not sure to understand the advantage to fusion two SSD's unless the SSD-NVme offers more speed than the SSD-SATA. Of course replacing any HDD with SSD does considerably accelerate the iMac but once two SSD's then what are the pros and cons to fusion two SSDs ?

Hello! Can i use Time machine the same way on unsupported iMac(late 2012) with Sonoma 14.3 like normal way? I mean, if I'm making TM backup to an external HD, than in case of trouble could I put back the whole system and all the data like it would be on an officially supported Mac?

Is the fusion drive ssd using the m2 pci slot? Also Ive heard changing the mechanical drive may mess up the fan sensor and the fan will run at full speed. Im using 2019 27” iMac 19,1 with Fusion Drive.
@@donaldandmijung yes, you need a special adapter (i.e. from OWC) to prevent the HDD fan from going full speed when you exchange the HDD.

I am running a 2019 27” iMac like the poster above. It originally had a 2Tb Fusion Drive. It started to run slower and slower then eventually became unusable. I brought it to the local Apple Certified Reseller, where bought it in 2019. They installed a 2TB SSD to replace the old Fusion Drive and the old small SSD shows as a seperate drive. Unfortunately this did not solve the problem and they found the fan was faulty and had damaged the Logic board.
1 replacement logic board later and another 2TB SSD and things looked better. Alas though it has now slowed to a virtual halt again. Just about useable but soooo slow. The tech cannot figure out what the problem is. My 2019 iMac now runs slower than my old 2013 MacBook Pro.
Would you have any idea what might be causing this? My next step is a complete fresh install to see if it a software problem, but that is a last resort.

I think, it‘s not very reasonable to keep the fusion drive, once you replaced the hdd with an ssd, because no point in switching data in beteween two drives, once both are ssd, it would only take capacity of the cpu
