  • Well it finally happened My 2013 Fusion Drive finally bit the dust, Luckily for me I had already split the fusion drive when i bought this iMac. Fusion Drives suck and they fail after about 3-5 years of use. I have no idea who thought this would be a good idea. Just goes to show that you get terrible results when you mix old technology with new tech.
In this video I will be removing and replacing the old 3 TB hard drive with a 1 TB solid state drive. The process was a lot easier than I expected but I was definitely intimidated at first. But is was a piece of cake.

I have to do this with a 2017 imac. I have the new ssd drive kit form OWC but I need to split. How was splitting the drives?

it was pretty easy from what i recall, just a few terminal commands and you should be good to go, I have run into some wierdness if you are running OCLP if you try to install an OS on the other drive, so just be aware my particular system 2013 makes the tiny SSD the primary boot drive.

In order to change the NVME you have to strip the whole thing down and remove the motherboard entirely. The Fusion Drive is no longer in use anyway. So
