All went well apart from the drive posts not fitting in the new SSD mount. I never used the cutter wheel, maybe it's better than razor blades. If you try it, let me know what you think.
If you want to save $50 on the SSD get it from B&H. I prefer to deal with B&H over Amazon.
The foam tape & sensor kits from 2012 on up will work. I used a 2012 kit.

Another idea. A lot of adhesive tape isn’t supposed to have a load on it for at least an hour. I replaced a friend’s iPhone battery yesterday, replacing the seal too, and one repair video showed putting the phone on a hard FLAT surface for an hour or so with some heavy books on top. Laying the iMac face down for a few hours, just under it’s OWN weight, might help. (Keep painters tape on while flipping over, & until afterward.)
Nice work. Did a similar job two days ago, but hadn’t seen this video as yet. Well done. I did my drive replacement with the computer lying on its back the whole time. No risk of losing the screws and was easier to remove and replace the video cables. Good work.
I'm sure everyone is pleased watching a video where most common mistakes are made unintentionally but that almost everyone run into them quite often, so the video comes with warning, tips, be careful, don't do this, pull the data first and al sorts of minorities. i've a iMac 2017 27" with HDD. I switched it with an SSD without the temp sensor (only used a bay to mount my SSD 2,5" on). No issues with the ventilator!
Not all iMac models require the heat sensor. Check with OWC or iFixit.com for which models do. There’s also software that will control the fan speed after boot up. (If already hot, such as during a Restart, the fan will run full tilt until finished booting.) I wish OWC wasn’t the only company making/selling them, because ~$40 is a lot to pay for a cable.

When I open screen using $10 amazon tool + new tape kit can I avoid needing an expensive sata inline thermal sensor cable? Can I avoid a 3.5" to 2.5" adapter tray and instead just zip tie the new 2.5" ssd into place?

Can you fit the posts on the bracket first before attaching the ssd, also all other videos show the iMac laid flat that way the screws can’t fall.
That's because you don't need a thermal sensor. A cheap SATA Y-splitter cable will do the trick just as well.

Great video. Interesting use of silicone. On the Thermal Sensor, I know there's plenty of videos about adding it to your upgrade, and not enough about skipping it. Many of us have done it without any problems (iMac 27" Late 2012 and up). I believe it is an old issue with early iMacs. ie. 2010/2011. I ran a stress test and the fan speed up when it's under heavy load and resumes normal when it's not. Keep the upgrade simple, leave the iMac unseal, test it out yourself. If the fan does act erratically, then you already have an answer for that.

If you want a stronger tape than the one you get in the kits you can use VHB (very high bond) tape, beware though, if you ever need to remove the screen again it will be much more difficult.

In one of his videos Louis Rossmann said that even his workers had experienced iMac screens separating from the case. There is 3M double sided tape available. 3M say, amongst other claims, it provides a "Pressure sensitive adhesive bonds on contact to provide immediate handling strength" How long the Amazon sourced tape has been in storage is unknown. Age could be a reason for failures. I was going to slice and dice my 2013 27 Inch iMac but after seeing Rossmanns video now boot from an external SSD.

Never use a metal blade to cut the screen off, use the plastic wheel tool and a thin plastic card going in 1/2 in no more if possible. 2. you do not need the thermal sensor kit for thin imacs, only the 2010-early 2012 models with the dvd.
IMAC late 2012 13.2 27": I will replace the 1TB standard harddrive with an NVME 1TB drive as the only drive. So i don't have to worry about fans going full afterburner?
@@DerGolf2000 you need to use a sata ssd. i use crucial mx in 1,2,4 tb. you cannot use an nvme pcie ssd because there is nowhere to plug it in. even if it had a fusion drive there may be a port on the mobo but its for a sata blade, so forget that and just replace the spinner with a sata ssd.
@@macguru9999 i thought i could use an adapter and the blade. There should be a slot on the motherboard. The spinning drive just gets removed.
@@DerGolf2000 The slot on a 2012 motherboard accepts apple sata (not pcie) ssd blades, not m2 nvme. Its only there in fusion drive models. The slot on the late 2013 motherboard accepts apple ssds and can be adapted to M2 , but its only there in fusion drive models and there are compatibility issues with nvme. The 2017 imac onwards is fully compatible but again the slot is only there on fusion drive 21.5s

Succesfully upgraded my imac late 2012 without a thermal sensor and no fan issues. I had upgraded my imac before replacing to catalina and I assume somewhere along the line came a firmware update resolving the fan issues.

I use those exact strips all the time without cleaning off the old tape BUT I put a strip of thin capton tape across the outer upper edge, with a nick cut in for the mic. That way I know its one i have done before and its secure. Using any glue at all is crazy, these ones often can only come apart again by wrecking the screen although you would know where to razor it if its your own job i guess.
When you’re affixing the screen, use removable insulation tape along the bottom edge to align it properly & prevent it from slipping off the edge when you’re re-attaching the cables. Also much easier to do all this with it lying on its back
Indeed. I used a 4" thick piece of foam rubber. Soooo much easier!
To save money and time, take the hard drive cable out of the old hard drive, connect it to the SSD, place a small strip of double sided tape on the front of the old hard drive, stick SSD drive to it….done in 30 sec and yes plenty of clearance when screen goes back on. SSD drive don’t get hot, no need for a thermal sensor, Samsung software Magician will also give you heat readings if needed.

Brilliant hands-on video! Awesome use of the silicone as a simple and effective "CYA." Cuts out easily if you have to go back in. I did my 2009 iMac HD upgrade (including RAM) and it went well. You have inspired me to do this one as well and put the money I would have paid someone to do it, into RAM and a nice 2TB SSD instead! THANK YOU!
I have a 256gb SSD in my 2017 iMac (it was the optional upgrade at time of purchase) so would I need the thermal sensor as well? I'm going to upgrade to a 2TB as you have as there's nothing wrong with this computer outside of storage.

Adam I think i removed the black tape with the seal double sided tape from the brass sensors top right and right side they look lightly peeled like a sheen removed by the tape, but no scratches and where did you get the hard drive sensor?

Thermal sensor is not required on any iMac that was able to natively install the Mojave update, it changed the firmware regarding the fans to max.
Did you do the speed test before and after the upgrade how much did it improve. Can you please reply

Not sure if I'm understanding your question but I have both a SSD hard drive and an internal SSD on my iMac and it works fine.
Hey AdamDIY, your data is never actually lost. You can use data recovery software with a hard drive dock to retrieve your files again, but it takes time. I would suggest using EaseUS Data Recovery Software for your old hard drive. I know this video was made months after this comment is posted, but if you still have your old drive, then go and try to get your files back. I'm rooting for yah!
How much speed did you gain? Can you tell us your experience after 6months of use. Read and write speeds helps a lot
An old adage still holds true, it's not if a hard drive breaks it's when, backup your data and do it often.
What if you don’t format your SSD like you did, is there another way?
Did the sod come with the brace to mount or was that a separate purchase?
The old HDD didn’t have thermal sensor cable. Why do you need to use when you update SSD?
Can we add a second ssd drive instead of replacing the fusion drive?
Have had a lot of success using a bootable live linux for recovering data from mac and PC drives with partially corrupt filesystems.
What about the silicone did you apply it after the test or did it not adhere right away?
I admit I had the screen fall off after all the work I did. My screen slowly went forward. I came home and found it on my desk and cracked. I was so depressed after that because I thought I may also need a video card. I brought it to the apple store and everyone around me saw my screen and reacted. I felt everyone's sympathy. Luckily it wasn't a $1000 mistake but less than $700. Just needed a screen and I had them install the OS since they had it. It's been great from then on.

Im a complete novice at this. What if I i just swap the new SSD in and boot it up, that will work right? I will just be starting completely fresh with none of my old data? Using late 2017 27 inch 5k iMac. I just wanna make sure I don’t have to do anything to the new SSD if I’m okay with not having my old data on there.
Read the thermal sensor doesn’t do anything? You can use any Y split and save money. Going to try it soon on 2011.

I am getting the beach ball just scrolling over RUclips video thumbnails on my 2017 iMac 2TB. Is it time for SSD upgrade or could it be another problem? I have only used 500GB so no where near capacity.
Why you not use primer for glass, put on then it dries then you put dot of glass seal. when it dries you could cut with blade. and it more secure then silicon ..

i not understand how the temperature sensor work. its connected with three wires on power connector (two negative one positive 5v) i think this powering the sensor. but i not understand how its comunicate with the mainboard the temperature releved.
I'm researching this and I'm getting conflicting reports. Some say the sensor cable is necessary, others say that after High Sierra, the OS used SMART to determine temperature and the sensor was no longer needed.
Any results? I would be interested on knowing if the sensor is necessary? (quite pricey!) Thanks
@@tonet_and No heat issues but I have a machine that crashes when you put drives to sleep so I had to disable that. But as long as my display sleeps (it does) it’s not really a problem.

Try replacing the keyboard in MacBook Pro that will make you tear your hair out! Even though I did that 2 years ago I am still amazed I was successful.

Only the 2011 models need the expensive OWC in-Line Digital Thermal Sensor, the 2009 and 2010 just need a 15-cent 2N3904 transistor. The 2012 and up iMacs absolutely Do Not Need the thermal sensor!
A very easy way to swap drives is before you remove the fac HD, D/L a program called _SuperDuper_ and put that on the original HD. Format a stand alone ext USBC external drive. Now, just copy from Orig Drive to ext HD. Remove oridinal HD, Put in new SSD. Turn on - the machine weill see new drive. Let it format to the *same* format type as on the orig drive, Once formatted, plug in ext hard drive (not the orignal drive). Open SuperDuper. Click copy to move the exact mirrow image to the new SSD. When done, remove ext drive from USB port. Turn on computer and wah-lah. Exactly the same as on your original HD, but now, the pace is *very fast*
iMacs 2012 and older also work without an OWC temperature sensor

@Toni oh that’s amazing. should i still buy the temperature sensor just in case. so ur telling me any mac model other than a 2012, 2013, 2017, or 2019 will have a the 100% fan speed problem. btw i have a 2012 21.5 inch imac with a core i7 and get 650m, it also has a slow 1TB hard drive. do you recommend i get a 1TB SSD and put it in my machine?
As a small computer repair shop, I can confirm that installing SSD's without the OWC temp sensor does not cause a full-speed fan rotation in 2012, 2013, and 2014 models and I suspect the same is true for the other similar models as well. The temperature of the CPU and GPU tends to get much hotter than the hard drive and will ramp up the fan speed way before the hard drive would anyway so it's not really a big deal like it was for the old pre-2012 models that always have the fan issue if the sensor is absent and even that can be controlled with a piece of software like Macs Fan Control if you forgot to add the sensor.

Wait, did you just switch your hd to ssd and it just started up? Did you do a cloning first?
Yes, he showed us that: put SSD into a temp external housing with a cable, down-loaded newest OS via App Store onto SSD, and then installed it. Since it had a working Mac OS, the iMac recognized it and started up.

Does anyone know if the fusion drive removed from inside can be mounted in an enclosure and used as an external fusion drive?
The fusion drive its a fusion between an small 32GB m2 and a 1 TB HDD, so yo can use the HDD. But also when you taken both them apart you can make an external fusion drive but have to pay for a case for m2. Also has to use 2 ports usb. So in that case its better use only the hdd as an external drive storage.

Just the 100% clear silicone you can get at Walmart or Lowe’s. Nothing fancy. Should be in a tube in the tub and tile section.

Comment on another site suggested that a firmware update removed the need for the sensor. Not just 2017 and newer. Just Sierra and newer. Catalina shouldn't need the sensor.

Damn. Forgot about this. I did this so long ago. I actually did two of them. 1. Do not attempt to put a m.2 on a iMac that didn't already have a Fusion drive installed.
I didn't need the sensor for the iMac that had the fusion drive. It is still running.

I did the SSD upgrade not so long ago swapping from a fusion set up to a larger SSD on the board and a 2tb SSD in the bay. I used the inline kit with the sensor and everything seemed to be fine. My iMac died a few days ago and I don't know whether this had anything to do with it but, when I cracked her open, the thermal sensor had come away from the SSD. I would definitely advise a stronger adhesive solution than the stock double sided tape it comes with. I also exhausted all avenues to reboot the Mac and Single User mode was showing up panics. I was however, able to retrieve my data by booting the iMac into target disk mode and connecting to another Mac via Thunderbolt. the drives popped up straight away and I just pulled off the files I needed. Damn lucky that worked.
After recovering your data, what will you do now with the iMac and SSD drives?
Wouldn't it be a lot easier to just use a SATA SSD instead of tearing everything apart to use a PCIe SSD?
It’s not a very difficult job actually I don’t even get 3000 write 3000 read speeds as compared 500 500 sata ssd It’s best to take everything apart trust me

My tip… having just done this myself… put the damned iMac on its back. Vertical orientation is far less ergonomic.
I replaced my Fusion drive and put in a 4T SSD. A certified Apple Repair tech told me that the thermal sensor is not needed on any SSD drive upgrade for the 2017 iMac 27 inch or newer. I was told this when my Mac was in for a warranty logic board repair. Now.... having said that, it’s going back to Apple because the fan runs at full speed immediately after powering up. Curious to see what the reason is for the full blast fans. I think it’s the lack of a thermal sensor. Apple disagrees.
Try the macfancontrol app and use one of the other multitude of thermal sensors to control the fan

You could try a fan control program like TG Pro. I've used it for years. Not sure if it'll help your situation (I suspect it will), but you can try for free and I think it's rather cheap to buy.
Reset your SMC shut the computer down unplug your Mac wait 30 seconds plug it back in and wait another three seconds before you turn the power on and if that doesn’t work try and NV/Pram reset
You did not do it as it has to be made ! No silicone too ! You also have to peel the adhesive when the screen is in place, locked apart from the one at the bottom .....
APFS not what you used.
You could just clamp the screen down with some screen clamps for 24 hours if you’re that worried about it
NOTE: I successfully installed an SSD in my iMac 2017 5k 27" WITHOUT the need for the overpriced OWC thermal cable adapter. No fan speed issues, works perfectly, just plug it straight in. Worth researching, I believe the modern models do no require the adapter.
I agree, on my 2013 I attached hard drive cable directly to SSD without any heat sensor and it has been fine....I don't know if people are aware, but trying to re-open the Mac after applying the after market tape is extremely hard to do without damaging the screen....This happened to me and I was using the pizza cutter tool, which wasn't quite strong enough to cut through the tape without additional pressure which eventually damaged my screen.. The manufacture that I purchased the replacement screen from advised me once the screen is sealed up, it will most likely not be able to be removed safely again....
