Putting the charging port on the side of the mouse would ruin the design aesthetic Apple is looking for. It would also be uncomfortable to the touch when using the mouse. Putting the port on the front or back would also ruin the design. Considering that you only need to charge the mouse a few times a year, I understand Apple's decision. They're offering a beautifully designed mouse, which is unique in the market at the moment. It doesn't make sense to provide something that already exists and is produced by so many manufacturers. Apple created this mouse for people who care about the look of the mouse and like Apple's unique aesthetic. I'm not saying it's a good mouse, but I do understand the business decision behind it. As a software engineer, I rarely use a mouse, and when I do, it's the Magic Trackpad.
I bought an iMac M3 24gb 1tb ssd. It’s a terrific machine, which saves a lot of space in my small workspace. If I went with a Mac mini pro with studio display, I’d be spending ~$1,000 more. If a pro chip was an option for the iMac, people would complain how expensive it is, and push people to the larger setup. But, if I was working on my computer 8-10 hrs a day, and needed more screen space or performance, then I’d opt for a more expensive setup than what’s available for the iMac. As a casual everyday computer for photo editing and some light video editing, the iMac is really nice to have.
That's the configuration I would go with. It's expensive but worth it, it's as close as your gonna get to a Pro All-in-one. I like that they offer the 24gb RAM, honestly it's a powerful enough computer to do Pro workflows, I've ran Unreal engine 5 with no hiccups so far.

yeah I 100% get this! Battery is amazing so you should never need to charge and use it at the same time, however when that does happen (however slim the chance) then there's nothing you can do!
@@ByteReview You can charge the mouse for about ten minutes (while you go to get a coffee) and it will give you three hours or so use, until you can give it a full charge later. The iMac is just what you get and not being able to upgrade neither the display nor the chipset is kind of a no-go for most. I actually think a MB Air combined with a 4k monitor is a better buy than an iMac, because you can build a clean setup anyways without clutter. Strange review - it seems the biggest negative points are the fact that you have to upgrade on certain features that’s just what it is. You already have the highest spec machine that you’re testing so why are you not happy with them? Is the speed really a big deal or is it just a hunger for more gear?
Thanks for your perspective. My 27 inch iMac recently bit the dust so trying to figure out what I’m going to get - that I can afford right now. I am a graphics professional and I do often work on really large Photoshop files and do video editing as well. I do need to do a price comparison of what the iMac maxed out will cost me vs the Mac Studio at a comparable or greater level.
All this needs is an exclusive iMac Pro Space Grey finish with the M3 Pro chip. Then it will finally be faster than the old Intel iMac and iMac Pro 2019 spec bump
I missed the old iMacs so much, the all in one is great for my desk... I actually loved the speakers on the iMac Pro too... maybe they are having thermal issues? I guess we'll see if they ever launch one. There is still rumours of a new 32inch mac display... maybe they aAs someone who used to have an iMac pro and mostly used iMac for like 5 years before that.. I got over the idea of the iMac now that the macbooks are so much more powerful. Studio display plus a mac studio is so much better plus it means you do not need to keep upgrading the screen just the main box.
My apartment has a white and mint theme and this iMac basically exactly matches the colour scheme of my home. I so badly wish it was more powerful so I could use it as the centrepiece of my content creating hub. But it's just not good enough for that price.
I like that the peripherals still charge by lightning - I have a load of lightning cables that are useless now my phone and ipad are USBC so at least this way they get some use. The keyboard and trackpad never leave my desk so it's not like I have to carry a lightning cable around just for them
Thank you, for this excellent review and "heart-break" about Apple's new colorful 24-inch iMac desktop computer. A few years ago, I was in this same position when it came to the M-1 "mac mini" because, we all waited and waited for Apple, Inc. to give it the M-1 Pro processor chip. After waiting several years Apple, finally added the Pro processor chip with the M-2 "mac mini" models. But now, I am not planning on buying a new computer until the Spring of 2025 ... so, too bad for Apple, Inc. (smile...smile).
I think the iMac is powerful enough to be a creative, but you do need a 16gb model. And I agree that the storage is pretty terrible, but if I owned one I’d get get expandable storage. It’s definitely not perfect, but the screen is an extremely appealing part of it. The speaker and camera are also worth mentioning.
My M3 iMac has a fast 1TB ssd with 24gb memory. I have 8 drives connected to my iMac, so disk space is never really an issue. Having 1TB for an OS drive is a bit overkill, but good for those who don’t want external drives.
@@dchartest9661 Sueddu. Look up her channel. Nearly a million subscribers, puts out lifestyle content weekly, uses an M1 iMac. Conversely this creator only does reviews which is the least artistic expression of the medium. I wouldn’t even consider it artistic. It’s product placement.
NO SD card was a massive issue why I have been a bit upset with apple. I do a ton of photography and I also dont like having to use USB type A adapters because everything i use is old school plugs, seriously all my film scanners as i still scan film for people and develop film and etc and having to use a adapter which sometimes plays weird with the software for my scanners and doesnt work is a massive pain.
I don’t understand. If the number one thing that breaks your heart is the price, but since you have bought it already, then you can keep using it. No? Your heart was broken during the purchase only.
I still have an intel 27" iMac from 2013 that I fully upgraded at the time, however for the last few years I've been feeling that itch to buy a new iMac... sadly I feel the wait is still on, at least until Apple release an iMac aimed at more professional users.
I don't think they will do it sadly (as much as I'd like them to!) that's why we have the mac studio + display. If you're coming from Intel though, any of the M series chips will blow it away, the upgrade is mad
I'm thinking of getting the new iMac m3 (higher ram and storage) as a MacOS workspace at home then on the go I use a iPad Pro cause I tried a macbook as my portable device. I'm just not the type of person to use a laptop style, then a desktop computer. Currently I'm going to school for content creating.
I’ve got the 16gb model running external SSD. It works great for me when it comes to creating React and Vue apps, but I can definitely understand where iMac users would be pissed at apple over this one, considering how spoiled they’ve been over the past decade. The lack of a 27” option really got to me, but honestly, I didn’t really feel it too much after about a week of use. It’s not a bad machine at all and I remember much slower iMacs in the intel family, but yeah, definitely pony up if you’re going to be rendering video.
Standard Apple passive upselling. Release a product with inferior specs to force you to upgrade. You then see that the price with upgrades bumps you up toward Pro or Max territory, so.......

its what's inside the box that counts, the screen is too small , it should be at least 27-30 in size, and they need to drop the stupid colours . Then there's the memory and storage , by the time you max it and look at the performance compared to a studio with a screen it makes no sense . you gotta look at the screen all day so you should buy a decent one .
I must be doing something wrong I have the M3 desktop with 1 tetrabyte hard drive and 24 gig ram and 4 externl hard drives and when working in lightroom or photoshop the color wheel does come out once in a while which is a surprise and the messge that I have to clear ram ...really? I do like it and Im new to Macs maybe I should have gotten a dell with the faster Intel 9 processor with 36 gig of ram and lots more ports so Im stuck with the M3 which is not bad Ill just have to get used to that color wheel poping up at least it hasn't frozen yet.
I continuously look for excuses to buy an iMac , when I love my macbook pro especially for portability. But what I need is his shirt so i can match it with my future green iMac. If anyone knows the link please tag me lol
OK, I agree with you that 8GB and 256 is too low regardless of the price. Especially the 256GB part. But talking about the price, the base price is $1,299 which is an absolute steal for, a 4.5k screen in a nice aluminum enclosure like that. You know who else has an all in one with that kind of display in that kind of enclosure? No one. But that’s not all. The speakers are quite nice, the microphone decent, same for the camera. Keyboard and mouse/trackpad included. Everything color matched. Remind me again who makes something like this? That’s right, no one. I’ve seen the all in ones from Dell and HP they aren’t in the same league. And for and extra $200 you can get more Ram or More Storage plus Touch ID and 2 extra USB C ports and now you have the likes of a real computer and not just the base spec that no one buys. For $1,500 you get the nice stuff which isn’t really all that much for what it is.
Yeah, I love the look of these, but this generation just did not call to me while it still has some reliance on lightning. Plus our M1 is still perfectly fine…
Since 1996, I have been using Apple desktop computers. I learned early on that, Apple Inc. always wants you to spend between $2,000 to $3,000 (US) whenever, you buy a new computer system (smile...smile).
I made the mistake of buying an iMac with 8 GB of RAM and it's completely useless. Returning it today. I've been nothing but disappointed with apple for the past several years.
This is tempting, but not until they get rid of the lightning connector and go with usb-c. Didn't the EU sue Apple over this issue already? Yes, the way the mouse charges is just plain stupid. Whoever at Apple thought that would be a good idea needs to find another line of work.
Do you have any windows laptop with such size? Because my MSI 24gig was really good. ti could handle anything. My MacBook with 8gig is good but it always runout of RAM@@Gamer-pq5uw
It’s such a shame the iMac is no longer the powerhouse it once was. I’d love one now I WFH fully, but the MacBooks are just better value for money/bang for buck.
So sad that entry level macs are trash in memories. If early you could upgrade on your own now it’s all placed on mb. How this situation can be called? Memorygate?
Apple is a for profit company and the little details like 8GB and 256GB is how they make their money. Shame to Apple. They could win all PC wars if they just marketed the end of the 8GB. Not sure who at their marketing doesn't get this yet. Great video. Thanks!!!
I love the design too but am I the only one who is completely annoyed by the black line between the panel and the bezels? Not sure if the display isn't laminated or what the reason for that choice is, but it destroys the appearance for me.
Is there even a standard USB on this? I want a mac to record music with my yeti mic infront of my amp, no good without a standard usb port 🤦 honestly GarageBand is what sells me on a mac over PC but no USB killed it
The 256 Gb flash is a much bigger problem on an M3 iMac than it would have been on a 256 Gb M1 iMac. The reason is that the 256 Gb M1 iMac has two 128 Gb flash modules which is faster than the single 256 Gb flash module in a 256 Gb M3 iMac. The reason for this is that simultaneous I/O to two flash modules is faster than I/O to a single flash module. Apple should not rely in end users having a deep technical knowledge to know that a 512 GB flash module and 16 Gb of RAM is essential for all serious tasks. I presume that you had more than 256 Gb of flash and that was not the cause of most of your problems?
I don’t think the home computer is dead. We have kids and they just have iPads for primary school and personal use. Inset up my old iMac for the family but no one used it
Sure that Apple, Inc. had a lot of miss-match color accessories with things like an orange full sized keyboard (with number pad), a pink track pad, etc. By making no changes to the design they, are able to continue to use the unsold accessories made for the colorful 24-inch M-1 iMac desktop systems (smile...smile).

Another great video, thanks. I've always been attracted to the iMac line because Apple makes beautiful all-in-ones, but as you pointed out the current models aren't up to the task for professional use. As I recall, you already have what I consider to be the perfect professional setup, a Studio desktop and Studio display.

I'm using a 16gb M1 pro macbook 14 in clamshell to a external monitor etc. Its awesome. I also have a wavlink thunderbolt powered dock.
Can you reveal the brand of iMac stand you’re using? Looks awesome.
The keyboard and trackpad never leave my desk so it's not like I have to carry a lightning cable around just for them
Yeah that's fair!
I agree with you 100 percent (smile...smile).
This is a bad reason to like lighting though, if they switched to USBC you can just throw those old cables into the recycling.
I plan on buying the m3 imac. not sure to go with the green or the blue color. both look great
If you were so concerned with video editing why on earth did you choose the 8 core + 16 ram version? Be honest!
(smile...smile).
hey is the imac M3 worth buying to do some office stuff alongside playing minecraft, roblox, etc?
Yep
@@ByteReview thank youu❤️🤌
I think the iMac is powerful enough to be a creative, but you do need a 16gb model.
And I agree that the storage is pretty terrible, but if I owned one I’d get get expandable storage.
It’s definitely not perfect, but the screen is an extremely appealing part of it. The speaker and camera are also worth mentioning.
My M3 iMac has a fast 1TB ssd with 24gb memory. I have 8 drives connected to my iMac, so disk space is never really an issue. Having 1TB for an OS drive is a bit overkill, but good for those who don’t want external drives.
I “really really” disagree with you. There are plenty of top level creators with massive channels making great content using the iMac.
And fair play to them, it's great for that but a MBP / Mac studio is better suited for sure
Name one then
@@dchartest9661 Sueddu. Look up her channel. Nearly a million subscribers, puts out lifestyle content weekly, uses an M1 iMac. Conversely this creator only does reviews which is the least artistic expression of the medium. I wouldn’t even consider it artistic. It’s product placement.
He is not wrong, he said that it’s not suited for him. Maybe it’s suited for them, that’s all. Just his opinion. No need for an Argument.
jenny mustard uses one too
NO SD card was a massive issue why I have been a bit upset with apple. I do a ton of photography and I also dont like having to use USB type A adapters because everything i use is old school plugs, seriously all my film scanners as i still scan film for people and develop film and etc and having to use a adapter which sometimes plays weird with the software for my scanners and doesnt work is a massive pain.
Great video! Those b roll shots are insane.
Thanks! Had a lot of fun shooting this one, nice to be back in the home office
Smashing the like just for that brilliant thumbnail. Great stuff Tom 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
haha good to hear, I had a few options for the thumbnail but this had to be it 🤣
I'm waiting for an m3 pro iMac without a doubt.
I don’t understand. If the number one thing that breaks your heart is the price, but since you have bought it already, then you can keep using it. No? Your heart was broken during the purchase only.
The Max chip has dual encoders hence reduced processing time of 6 min vs 12 min on the Pro and M3 Imac.
Makes sense!
What monitor stand is that?! 👀
You do know that Lenovo, Microsoft, Dell etc. all have plenty of products that start at 8GB RAM, don't you? "Inferior specs" is just relative.
How are the Rurark MR1 MKii speakers holding up after all these years Tom??...
very well indeed
With the iMac I have the same problem as with the MacBook Air. I really would like to get one but I need more power!
"but I need more power!" - for what?
@@TheDanEdwards for Video and photo editing. I don’t care about the export Time. But I want a smooth editing. I am happy with my MacBook Pro M1 Pro. But like the iMac and MacBook Air design more. At the end I prioritise performance.
Don’t you find the screen kind of small in this?
2:54
its what's inside the box that counts, the screen is too small , it should be at least 27-30 in size, and they need to drop the stupid colours .
Exterior is not exactly the same with m1 ?
ummm I think it is?
Was this the 24GB 1TB model ?
Nope, 16GB / 512 GB you cans see here 0:33
I enjoyed the video, thank you.....................
“Even the iPhone has moved to Usb C”, maybe you mean JUST the iPhone
Yeah, I love the look of these, but this generation just did not call to me while it still has some reliance on lightning. Plus our M1 is still perfectly fine…
If the M1 is still killing it then defo no need to upgrade!
I need a 32" iMac.
256 GB for 1.400 pounds is crazy…
Since 1996, I have been using Apple desktop computers. I learned early on that, Apple Inc. always wants you to spend between $2,000 to $3,000 (US) whenever, you buy a new computer system (smile...smile).
"256 GB for 1.400 pounds is crazy…"
Chalk and cheese. We already know what you have said.
I made the mistake of buying an iMac with 8 GB of RAM and it's completely useless. Returning it today. I've been nothing but disappointed with apple for the past several years.
You opinion same with me. This M3 iMac not suitable for me too... I rather use Mac mini M2 for my works
This is tempting, but not until they get rid of the lightning connector and go with usb-c. Didn't the EU sue Apple over this issue already? Yes, the way the mouse charges is just plain stupid. Whoever at Apple thought that would be a good idea needs to find another line of work.
Very nice video. I still don't understand why Apple will still put 8gig and 256 in a pro computer. That is really greedy for Apple to do that.
You don't know anything 8gb ram of Apple is better than 128 GB of Intel my friend
Do you have any windows laptop with such size? Because my MSI 24gig was really good. ti could handle anything. My MacBook with 8gig is good but it always runout of RAM@@Gamer-pq5uw
This Mac is a dream, very beautiful, let me ask you a question, what anime were you watching in this video?
Screen is too small and min spec should be 16GB/1TB /27" and a nvme slot.
Memorygate?
"How this situation can be called? Memorygate?"
I won't buy one based on the soldered-in components. That benefits only the manufacturer.
Bro wanted to use actual hardware (that limits you, screen wise) over a special computer.
Apple is a for profit company and the little details like 8GB and 256GB is how they make their money. Shame to Apple. They could win all PC wars if they just marketed the end of the 8GB. Not sure who at their marketing doesn't get this yet. Great video. Thanks!!!
I need max chips and black bezels.
I love the design too but am I the only one who is completely annoyed by the black line between the panel and the bezels? Not sure if the display isn't laminated or what the reason for that choice is, but it destroys the appearance for me.
You know, I never noticed this before. But, you know what they say "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" (smile...smile).
It's perfectly in keeping with the Apple legacy; get less, pay more.
Is there even a standard USB on this? I want a mac to record music with my yeti mic infront of my amp, no good without a standard usb port 🤦 honestly GarageBand is what sells me on a mac over PC but no USB killed it
Buying any Apple product breaks my heart after seeing my bank account
I love the form factor and build quality, I just wish it ran Windows lol
You could get a studio display and run a PC through it for a similar vibe? 🤣
@@ByteReview I have thought about it, but doesn’t the scaling difference cause issues?
Yeah this is the 512GB version. No issues with flash speed here.
7:29 “If this iMac is supposed to be for new creators”… who said that? 😅
Google chrome? It's time to switch to Arc 😁
I've heard good things but never considered changing!
I don’t think the home computer is dead. We have kids and they just have iPads for primary school and personal use. Inset up my old iMac for the family but no one used it
What a shame
I agree that I want the M3 iMac to be my main desktop because I love the design and its powerful
Apple could have done so much more with this product upgrade, feels like an afterthought especially when it comes to the peripherals..
I’m pretty surprised that you done “hate” the Magic Keyboard, most of the mechanical keyboard fans usually don’t like this keyboard
Magic keyboard is really nice, I type loads on a MacBook / iPad and it feels very similar so I don't mind it at all
An excellent, concise account Tom, for the would-be purchaser!...and...you hit the nail on the head at 6.26....it's outrageous that Apple penny-pinch their customers in such a mean-spirited way. Those figures scream...".£1400 for average performance figures!!! "...Apple at its worst.....but...to be fair, the machine is class, the pad is great, the mouse is laughable and the Lightning connections are retro. Corollary?.......buy top spec for future-proofing and swallow your pride...hey! it's only money...right?...well done Tom...PS You could have mentioned the 'blacks'.....is the M3 good for watching films on RUclips. My aging 27 is hopeless, showing nothing but black on some films...
Soooo M4 iMac in anyone's future?
Display is too small, CPU is underpowered when using Logic Pro.
Soldered in RAM and SSD hilarious and then most importantly it's not 27 inches.
There is no such thing as a family computer
Another great video, thanks. I've always been attracted to the iMac line because Apple makes beautiful all-in-ones, but as you pointed out the current models aren't up to the task for professional use. As I recall, you already have what I consider to be the perfect professional setup, a Studio desktop and Studio display.
Yep I do! Still wish it was a 27" iMac Pro though haha
From where you got pikachu figure ☺️
The chin is important. Where else would i put my post-it's 🤝
This is true 😅
