You know, its amazing that if you have one of these dogs with hunting genes, those genes immediately kick in when they see like a squirrel or other small animal. Their posture, stance, and movement all mimic their ancestry gene from hundreds of years ago. You may not know it, but what you are looking at is the same behavior and movement that the dogs hundreds of years ago use to use to hunt. It's incredibly amazing if you think about it.
Squirrels are just rats with a better PR department. Ground Squirrels can be very destructive to agriculture. For example, one squirrel can steal 50 lbs. of almonds in a single season. The farm where I once worked paid the employees' kids $1 for each squirrel, and gave them the .22 ammo to go hunt the little pests. One stretch of road along the orchard had at least 50 or more squirrel nests in the embankment. That's 2500 lbs. of almonds with a value of about $7500 to $10,000.
That's why Jack Russell invented a terrier that would be an equal opportunity rodent killer! And they have proven to be some of the most valuable--not to mention--cutest--varmint control workers on the planet!
Best form of vermin removal, quick and chemical free. Eddie our Jack used to run down and catch rabbits on my parents country property. Smart little doglets, not scared of anything! (Apart from thunder!. 🤣)
I took my JR to the pet store today, she was having a great time meeting a lot of other dogs, had a little look at the rabbits......and then found the Guinea pigs.......I had to drag her away because she instantly flipped the kill switch to engage.
That was cruel the poor squirrel was just a baby. Should have stopped dog from killing it. Also the dog could get sick eating squirrel and rats and things like that.

I had a Irish Jack russel terrier as well, you’ve never seen rodent killers like them. They are simply made to do it.

They are likely considered pests in his area. You would kill a spider or something like that if it was in your home, same concept here.
