I rescued my Jack russell when he was 6 years old. He was a lover and a lap dog. He had a fenced in back yard. And he loved laying out in the sun. He followed me every where. He came down with cushings disease when he was about 12. He had 4 pomeranian brothers and sisters. He barked alot but he let the others know I was his. He lived to 18 and had dementia so bad, ,but I played doggie music for his anxiety and he slept next to me until it was so bad I had to make the ultimate decision to let him go. I miss him so much!!😪😪😪😭😭😭

Just got my first JRT after years of wanting one. My daughter got one as well, so the brothers keep each other worn out with constant play, then when they're pooped out, they come looking for a lap to snooze on. Such gorgeous dogs!

  • @Garblegox
    @Garblegox 11 месяцев назад +37

Former goober owner, his name was Cooper.
-You can't tell your terrier to respect someone, that person has to earn it. All I could ever do was teach guests to grow a spine, or he'd walk all over them. He could hear the sincerity in your voice when you said, 'no'. If you don't know how to say 'no' like you mean it, you'll be his tennis ball launcher for the next 18 hours.
-Absolutely not a lap dog. Lap sitting was a shallow pretext to play. He'd lie on you with his eyes open, heart racing, and the second your hand touched him he was on his feet ready to play some game.
-He was the best dog I had as a boy, and I had 4 before moving out. I think I got him when I was 8, and people always said Cooper and I were the same being, in different bodies. He kept me out of the house, he taught me about respect and determination, how hard work can be a love language, how to stick up for yourself no matter the difference in power, etc. That dog was a little champion. He wasn't disrespectful, he had high expectations of you, and did the dog version of scoffing at your bad attitude. We all need to be a bit more like terriers. They know a human's potential better than most humans.

We have a four year old who loves us so much that he is very happy to have us together in the same place same time and is my shadow and he is the best little guy ever he was completely trained by him self and he loves a Charlie B treat when I was teaching him how to stay and not eat my ankles as a puppy and he is so intelligent I can’t believe that he has such a great aptitude for knowing if our moods change and he will comfort us. We love him and he loves us.❤We lost my brother and we were both very close to him and I saw my husband was not getting out of the depression from losing his best friend and I told our grandson to get him a jet and he brought us Patches and that was the best medicine for the both of us. I didn’t know I wasn’t really over the loss but this little guy was and is our best friend and apart of our heart. He is very well loved and he is very sweet soul ❤😊

I had a Jack Russell live to age 19. He was a great hunter. He was very loving. He wasn’t as energetic as my family’s new JRT, but loved to play in his younger years. Throughout his life he brought in at least 50 animals, including a rabbit just a few months before he died. I also hate to admit this, but when he was like 1-2 years old he brought home a dead kitten.
He really was the best dog I have ever had. He was with me from 12 to 31 years old. He was part of our family. Everyone in the neighborhood loved him as my grandmother just let him roam. He had her trained! He knew all he had to do was bother her or bark and she would let him go outside. He was an extremely loving and loyal dog. My family’s new JRT has big shoes to fill.
    RIP Winston

Our mini Jack was raised with chickens, turkeys, ducks, and cattle from early puppyhood. She never bothers the birds and, of course, the cattle are just huge and not always dog tolerant. She hunts squirrels, mice, rats, and rabbits around the barns and shops. She's downright vicious with them. She is very vocal with growling and baring teeth. She's physical. But, it's mostly talk. She grabs while playing but doesn't clamp down hard. Jacks definitely need room to be who they are. I'm retired, so I have time. A person has to be ready for the huge personality in a tiny package. Their influence in a household is very large.

My miniature Jack is nearly nine I have had her since eight weeks old she has never been a digger, she is just not interested, she does like to roll and rub along the ground and actively seeks out bird crap in the grass to roll in, she chases Rabbits, Squirrels and Birds but has never killed them she just enjoys the chase. She is the least affectionate dog I have ever owned and only gets close in Winter when the house is cool she climbs under the quilt to keep warm, she also goes through periods of eating nothing them periods of eating big and scoffs down all her food and some extra, she can easily go on a five hour hill walk and never runs out of energy. I agree about children she has no time for little people under 4 ft and barks at them to go away. Love her to bit though never a dull day with a Jack in your life just entertaining in every way and great for security she barks at anything that comes near the house that is unknown

now that i have my own family we have a neutered male jrt he is the SWEETEST dog ever! it is 100% how you raise them!!! we had a 3 yr old boy and a 6 yr old girl when we got the jrt, but we trained him to be gentle with the kids, and he is great with the kids! i have seen my son stick his hand in the dogs food bowl as the dog was eating and the dog just walked away. BUT... he is prone to chasing rabbits and small animals around the farm so we keep him on a leash, but he is GREAT with the goats, even if they aren't very nice to him. he just wants to play, and NEVER bites or growls at them. i am a FIRM believer of you get out what you put into training your dog!

I've had two Jacks so far, and the male I have now is just the biggest ham, when you take him in the stores he allowed to go into. He watches TV, and sings to the radio in the car, or the Semi.
My last one, a female, when we were out on the Mississippi river, every time we hit the shore, she would jump off and go dig up a dead fish, then roll in it, EVERY TIME.
So the dog shampoo stayed in the boat. She was the sweetest dog I've ever owned, smartest one too. I'd walk around the house with her hanging off the tug of war rope, snarling.
Great Breed, but they can shed you a throw rug in about an hour.

I will never own any other breed, they are strong willed, demanding, intelligent, independent, and incredibly loving. Trainable oh yes and they add their own twist to that training an example, our Jack refused to use a lead and would walk by your side obeying every command unless you decided to try using a lead, lol. Lastly no two Jacks are ever the same, they are creations of individuality and a force of nature.

My son's JRT owns all of the toys, everywhere. And the balls - all hers. The toys she gathers around her and guards, the balls she stashes. Surprise ball stashes can be found all over the house - under the couch, behind the bed, under the outside deck. She's as stubborn as they come but such a delightful happy little dog.

My girl is a JRT mix with Portuguese Podengo Pegueno. She is ALL this and absolutely one of the best things that ever happened to me. She loves her pack and everyone in the world perhaps because she was socialized so early. Unbelievably calm when on outings (store, events, rides, etc) but lets the RIP out at home! Her ears stay up and her confident and brave demeanor is so sweet to witness. Will do ANYTHING you say for snacks...good luck trainjng without them!😂 Mattea Fia is my little heart beat...❤❤❤

We’ve had five JRTs and have never had any serious issues pointed out herein…they are highly energetic and love to play/run…but when down time comes they are excellent lap dogs and love to snuggle. All have been excellent with youngsters. No problems with digging or persistent barking. It all comes down to good training. Problems will arise with lazy owner & poor training.

We rescued a baby Russell and Lab and they are the best of bestest buds, they tear things up together, destroy small trees and plants. I find "snow" on random days. They're so cute😂😂 they're my monsters but they are a full time job.

I had that too. Chesapeake Bay Retriever and JRT. Yeah the terrier- retreiver combo is great. Both recue dogs. It is crazy how people pay so much for pure breed, then give them up. They would pretty much entertain themselves all day while I worked. Then I played with them or walked them after work. Very well behaved dogs. None of these issues for me.

I’ve had 3 JRT’s and loved them all. Greatest personality of all dogs, nuttiest dogs on the planet, tenacious as hell but loving, funny and as tough as old boot leather. Our first dog was a houdini and escaped anywhere we put her, went to the shop and waited for the owner to give her a freddo frog, she tried ham, chicken and cheese but wouldn’t leave the store until she got a chocolate frog (the shookeeper billed me whenever I came to the store). Our second JRT terrorised the postman from our side of the fence, chased him and barked like crazy, till I invited the poor frightened postman into our yard to meet. I then showed him she could actually open the gate by herself, it had just been fun for her to scare him. He laughed so hard he cried knowing the dog could have got to him but never even tried. Our last JRT was a dog for our 51 (over an 11 year period) foster kids, kindest most loving and intuitive dog ever. In my 60’s now and have just got a maltese, fragile, loving, gentle, non shedding lap dog, love her to bits but only about 10% of the JRT’s personality.

Saw a video of hounds that cornered a cougar on a mountain cliff. It was a ferocious standoff until the Jack Russel showed up. He barked and snarled, then jumped into the cougar. Both disappeared over the edge and a minute later the little dog climbed back onto the ledge with the other dogs. He looked okay, and I thought what a tough little guy he was. And fearless! The smallest one was most courageous of all. 😮

I had a JRT, "Pip" for fourteen years. If I had watched this video, I would not have gone for the breed, and the poster may have it right for most of the dogs. My dog was actually pretty good. Never jumped on furniture, or bolted; I used to walk her at heel for long distances without a leash. She was good with people, but deadly on small animals. Did not get along well with most other dogs, but there were exceptions. Interesting thing: she was digging a lot in the yard. We were concerned, but it turned out that we needed a new drain field for out septic system so the dog was smarter than us. Had a big problem with fleas! Our current Maltipoo and Bisonpoo never a flea!

As someone who’s hunted many terrier breeds even as a pack of five. Like hounds. over 43years and bred them
There is only two pieces of advice need as was told in this video
No1 exercise in recent years my terriers have put in a five hours hunts including there daily walks of around 30/40 minutes
This is to cut down on bad behaviour
No2 training starts the day you bring them home you can take them to a trainer but your that terriers pack leader. Your the boss
I love terriers if it was not for my first that my mum bought me. I would not have been privileged to see the beautiful countryside and the amazing animals that live with us and around us.

I have had 3 Jack Russell and never experienced most of these traits. Only one of them was territorial of her home and she would escape when you opened the door to lead you on a chase. They are wonderful dogs and make great companions. All of mine loved to ride in the car as long you weren't headed to the vets office. None ever tried to escape from the fenced in lot. Two of them were lap dogs. The alpha female did not get along well other female dogs but acted like street whore around males. They were all rescues are very good at training people. The last one(the alpha female) lived to be 17. I miss all of them.

JRT/Chihuahua mix and I’m really lucky that’s what happened bc he has a personality mix of both.
He is an anxious little dog, shadow and lapdog, very barky but great at basic obedience besides coming when he is called unless treats are involved he is highly food motivated.
I recently decided to adopt a kitten.. we’re having fun.. maybe one day he’ll stop barking.. one day..

My girl is definitely a lapdog, when she wants to be. She is also a rabbit, squirrel, and mouse killer. She demands attention, both from her people and our other dog. She is fearless and tenacious at the dog park too, even with dogs much bigger than her. She can play for hours, wearing out several other dogs. She is the consumate toy destroyer, only the hard black rubber stuff stands a chance. Also, my back yard looks like the surface of the moon.

Best dog I ever had. Not really a problem for me. Yeah she digs. I don't care. I would bring to a beach or hiking and she could dig all she wants. She never really dug at home. The yard was not interesting. Never needed a leash. She always stayed close. Did not care for other dogs not at the house. Liked every person she ever met. Had to pick her up to put her on bed. She refused to jump. Always right next to me on the couch, head on my lap. Not every dog acts exactly like the breed description.
