Absolute incredible marksmanship from all of you. 2" @1000y is "like" threading a needle from 10 yards. I learn so much from watching all of your shooting techniques, and I don't even watch the split screen for impacts. EC's trigger control is peerless and beyond top-tier.
Unfortunately the 308 with the 168 SMK has been studied immensely and is in Bryan Litz’s book… The bullet design goes completely unstable at transonic… Not a 1k choice… With the 12 twist look into the Berger 168 hybrids… check the stability formula to make sure they are good… This is a cool video! I like the team formula!!! I would love to see more of these videos!

Hey Erik… here is a content idea… E target at 1000yd in challenging wind. Tactacam on your scope to reveal your actual holds. Split screen showing tactacam view on left, e-target hits on right. Shoot sighters then 20rds and narrate your thoughts and decisions real time as you center up and then lay down a demo group for score. This would give us a FPV demonstration of what it is like to shoot Fclass and fight with the wind from the shooters point of view. Not a wind reading lesson per se… just a demonstration to illustrate what it looks and feels like with narration revealing the depth of thought and decision making involved. Some of the narration might need to be added in post so that it doesn’t interfere with the performance too much. The audience generally just sees a bunch of guys laying on the ground going bing boom bang when observing Fclass and doesn’t get to witness any of the intricacies involved. Cheers!
First of all I love this type of content. Erik is killing it! When self spotting it is imperative that you keep the rifle on target through the entire shot process. Many folks are in too much of a rush to run the bolt. Following through will give you the best possible result. And, allow you to very careful measure your shot then correct.

@ I’ve been reloading close to 25 yrs. Yes he taught SD, truing ballistic coefficient, proper technique to see where shot hit, how to properly read mirage, rain and has developed probably the best ballistics app there is. He was a 26yr snipe, top of class in both sniper school and special forces sniper school, master instructor and was the shooting instructor for Gunter’s before he moved to AL. I’m pretty sure he knows what he’s doing!
And a driving school with no gas pedal is all these guys shooting long distance, and I’ve yet to see one with a level on their scope!! I guess they are so good they can see 1 degree of cant with the naked eye. SMH
@R-dh7sc mark and sam after work predominantly shoot sfp. Doesn't seem to hold them back. I think experience, or the lack thereof, is what got him on this one. He had a couple bad calls from his spotter as well.

Came here to say this same thing. A little brush clearing and get rid of all that dead fallen stuff. Or at least drag it all to the side, out of camera shot. Might be time to replace the plywood on that target stand, too.
Spotting from my arm chair, i could call the wild misses in the first half of the trace before it got there. Wind at target was from 2-6mph. Wind was realy ripping for the first 600yrds, tricky tricky!
168 SMK is famous for being unstable when transonic. Lots of bullets will tolerate it though. There are plenty of factory offerings in 308 that would work at 1k if that guy doesn't want to handload.
Erik you should try making your 6x47 L brass from 6XC cases so you can run large primers. I tested the heck out of both small and large primers for 6x47L and found my velocity spreads were way lower and more consistent with large primers especially over a wide temperature range. In cold winter weather the small primers were awful. Large primers were great at all temperatures. You have nothing to lose by testing and I am certain you will be surprised by the results.
I shot 6x47 for years in all temp ranges from Texas summers to Nebraska winters for PRS. Always used CCI450s and never had any of the issues you speak of.
@@ErikCortina Its not about the brass quality, its about enough ignition with large primers to ignite 38 grains of powder. I went through this with Tubbs and Obermyer in detail as well as Dan Dowling. Tubbs used LRPs for 6XC for a reason and I found LRPs worker better for 6x47L and you can even test this using range pickup brass for free with 22-250. LRPs are way better and more consistent over a wide temperature range.
@PracticalTacticalAccuracy 450s have done fine with 6GT and 6.5CM. My SDs shrunk went I went to 6.5CM SRP brass. New barrel for 6GT and my SDs are around 3-4fps and managed a .19MOA group doing seating depth testing which happened to be in a pretty good node.
I love shooting at distant targets, but I don't have one of those custom rifles. I shoot an old .340 Weatherby Mark V rifle, and it shoots amazingly well. I think I could compete pretty well against the rifles in this video, especially on a windy day like that, but then I have never fired twelve rounds in two minutes through the barrel. That would sure create a lot of heat in the smaller diameter barrel of my hunting rifle. I am an old man now and have been shooting long range in the local mountains for many years. I get a kick out of all the young shooters with their fancy high-dollar rifles. Old age is funny that way...

I noticed at 1000 yards you guys are scattered every where that's still impressive. You should try 900 yards and see what kind of groupings you get. It might be the wind. I love watching your videos and learn alot from you Erik keep up the awsome videos
I agree, his limiting factor is running the factory ammo. The cone of fire looked to be about 18" to me which is bigger than even the large plate they were shooting at. He was basically was chasing impacts and moving the whole cone of fire around. Very hard to hit targets that way.
When I was going at those distances with 308 I was running 175s and 178s in the 2850-2900 range. At the elevation in TX those would still be really close to trans at that range.
Anticipation was high, my heart dropped with every miss at the 2"! What a hard shot, honestly just playing the odds of the cone of fire at that point...
Okay, in my opinion, yall did really well with this challenge with the exception of the wind . The wind was wwaaayyyy to squearly . It was blowing yall's shots all over the place. It would be nice to see Y'all shoot that challenge again without as much wind, and I know it's hard to do, but a 5-10 mile an hour wind would have been way better than what yall had . I live in central Texas myself it's not to offend we don't have some wind . The wind Y'all were shooting in makes it really hard to hit a 2in target. Even if you are shooting 1 hole groups at 100yrds at 1000yrds, your groups would be the size of the 2in target or close to it . Maybe you should leave the 2in target out of the challenge and just shoot 12,10,8,6,4-inch targets and if you're able to run it no problem let the 2in target be the bounis or tie breaker. Cool video, that’s a brutal challenge, I think a bigger (or better in the 308 case) would help. Little guys just can’t hold that 2” horizontal. Something like a 6.5 prc would help a lot I think. Also a Berm and switch to chain hung targets instead of straps would help for spotting.
Man... that was impressive. I finally got a look at a 1,000 yard range, near Eagle Lake, TX, a few weeks ago and I can't imagine hitting .15-ish MOA at 1,000 yards. I've had groups in that range at 100 but not many. A typical good day for me, at 100 yards, is .25 - .5 MOA and most days aren't typical lol. That's like 3" to 6" at 1,000 yards, actually it's probably more because a lot can happen between 100 and a thousand even if the wind is low. This video is a great example of how difficult long range shooting really is.

I went out for Lethal Weapons Texas and KBTX this year but just a spectator. I joined a few weeks ago. 9-Hole was on one of the ranges when I was getting my orientation. We were out there with some friends yesterday on Range 1. I think 9 Hole Reviews was shooting yesterday but I didn't see them. One of our group was getting the tour and he mentioned someone shooting video. I've got at least 2 weeks of over thinking to do before I try get checked out on 1,000 yards. The range I normally shoot at is south of El Campo. Pistol and 25-50-100-200-300 rifle.
@@RungunBisnus It's a heck of a range. What I like about it is you reserve a specific range (3 hour block of time) and it's yours. Guests are ok but it's an extra charge and they are your guest not some random person. There are a ton of other amenities. Range 1, the range we shot at yesterday, is a 360 degree range. Ie, if it's just you or everyone is shooting together from the center there's a full 360 degree field of fire. Obviously that only works if all shooters are in the same area. Or you can go to one end and shoot steel at 140 yards. There are ranges with trees. Some ranges have a building that classes can be taught in (and are). My son shot a match in Austin last weekend. I don't know which one or where. The range I shoot at in El Campo is 45m away. The Ranch is 30-ish minutes away from me.
Uh, impossible. Game over. Shooting under 1moa at that range is challenging. Hitting a large target at that distance is feat. This is great! Will watch with baited breath.
I think your elevation calls are slightly off. Given that there's a small distance behind the targets to the berm, if you were to hit the target but follow the bullet's trajectory, it would impact lower on the berm. So if you're missing and your impact on the berm is, as the LASER flies, at exactly the same height as the target, you're shooting high.
I’ve been impressed with it and with the velocity I was able to achieve, I don’t have any experience with a 7-08 but I imagine it’s pretty close to the same. I just had a bunch of 6.5 creed brass from my old PRS rifle so for me it made more sense to neck that up vs buying 7-08 brass.
Mitch seemed to be the winner to me. Experience makes all the difference the 308 is plenty capable but he had a really rough time, was over shooting just about the entire time.
That 2" made this face through the entire range session Eric! 😝 ( Edit: this should be a sticker for the 2") Some of the trace looked like the rounds went around the target!😂😂
Hi Eric if you look for more challenges in future I’d love to see one where you get the professional guys like your self as a charity challenge where it’s handicapped bad for you guys so build a unknown rifle or basic rifle at the range then shoot unknown ammo at X yards and every hit will be cash towards the charity of your choice or the shooters choice

I understand your thinking about MIL relation but for me i cant see the reticle to mil at lower power anyway with 1st focal. I think my MOAR T is .1 moa on 25x. Seems like the F1 AT 25X was .125 or .15 moa. Pretty thick for fine shooting. You guys were getting really close though👍
Maybe the next time the wind won't be so switchey. Even then the challenge would be exceptional. Just a few years ago 1k shooting was done on 14 to 20 inch square targets. Now 10" to 2".

Waaaaaay out there. That is a challenge! I see these 6mm BR, 7mm Claymore...I have not heard of them. Are those cartridges designed or made for the types of competitions EC and the Team compete in? The .308 fellow, i was trying to figure what was happening with the random odd shot placement. What spotting scope and video camera combination is that for such clarity?
I wonder why those shooting the .308 don’t use - 1:10 twist or 1:9 - 200 gr match bullets to buck the wind - heavier chassis Maybe it’s just me that has Ben shooting the .308 since 1994 and knows that you can shoot light / fast….but wind deflection is big / or shoot slow and heavy and it’s dead on, regardless of caliber. 230 grain bullets in the .300 Win Mag buck the wind very well. 200-220 grain bullets in the .308 do the same. 140 grain A-tips in the 6.5x47 work realy good Just my opinion though. This is a tough challenge and looks fun
You could buy a 911 with the combined price of those rifles and goes to show just how hard it is to do this. Those 2" small targets are like hitting a 3/16" dot at 100 in gusting wind. Given even a 0.40 moa rifle with no wind will have a group of 4", youre better off getting close and just shoot dead center on the target and hope you luck out as you have about a 30% chance given the wind.
Chasing the ghost. I bet if only one would have held the same point of aim when they were so close just missing it one would have hit. I doubt any of that ammo is zero on top of one another accuracy. Great video. I do know a bit about chasing the ghost.

when we start feeling cocky we hang a tennis ball from a string at 1k. its amazing how many rounds you can burn in an afternoon lol. its basically a matter of luck. where you happen to hit inside that cone of fire.

@SixOFord agreed - nothing wrong with SFP in and of itself. However, his lack of experience, twinned with the SFP made that far more difficult.

The impact at the end was on the right upright post - in line with the bottom edge of the 2" target but not on the target unfortunately.
2" at a thousand is one big wow---add that kind of wind to the mix and that's incredible to be even getting all around it.

Looked like the .308 was going transonic at that range. It wasn’t just the wind blowing it around that much. That did look to be a great deal of fun!

The range I shoot at in El Campo is 45m away. The Ranch is 30-ish minutes away from me.
Yeah, 1,000 yards is a whole different ball game!

Uh, impossible. Game over. Shooting under 1moa at that range is challenging. Hitting a large target at that distance is feat.

I think your elevation calls are slightly off. Given that there's a small distance behind the targets to the berm, if you were to hit the target but follow the bullet's trajectory, it would impact lower on the berm. So if you're missing and your impact on the berm is, as the LASER flies, at exactly the same height as the target, you're shooting high.

7mm08 shooting berger 180s is my match rifle this year. it works a lot better than what i thought it would on paper.
I’ve been impressed with it and with the velocity I was able to achieve, I don’t have any experience with a 7-08 but I imagine it’s pretty close to the same. I just had a bunch of 6.5 creed brass from my old PRS rifle so for me it made more sense to neck that up vs buying 7-08 brass.

Mitch seemed to be the winner to me. Experience makes all the difference the 308 is plenty capable but he had a really rough time, was over shooting just about the entire time.
That was amazing I could not see bullet trail but on my big monitor the splashes were all around it. I can’t imagine how small that looks at 1000 yds.
The bullet trace is there, but it goes up really high. You could see it better on my 6 x 47 because it’s flatter

It’s possible. If the bullet hits behind them, especially the large one, it blocks the view.

Hi Eric if you look for more challenges in future I’d love to see one where you get the professional guys like your self as a charity challenge where it’s handicapped bad for you guys so build a unknown rifle or basic rifle at the range then shoot unknown ammo at X yards and every hit will be cash towards the charity of your choice or the shooters choice

Pretty cool Erik, thanks now i gotta go move my target out to 1000😜. What you were talking about is exactly why i run second focal plane scopes. I understand your thinking about MIL relation but for me i cant see the reticle to mil at lower power anyway with 1st focal. I think my MOAR T is .1 moa on 25x. Seems like the F1 AT 25X was .125 or .15 moa. Pretty thick for fine shooting. You guys were getting really close though👍
Maybe the next time the wind won't be so switchey. Even then the challenge would be exceptional. Just a few years ago 1k shooting was done on 14 to 20 inch square targets. Now 10" to 2".

Do you clean up your lead? Sift the berm?
I don’t allow hunting with lead on our farm, I feed people.
I really wished there was a back drop behind the KYL to see how close some of those shots were!
Backdrop would prevent us from seeing splash on berm though. 🤷♂️

I find it hard to believe that 34" barreled 6 BR was only pushing 2700fps. I'm pushing 2800 fps out of a 26" barrel with 28.8gr of Varget.
Im using over 30gr of Varget, chrono don’t lie don’t know what to tell ya lol🤷♂️
@@mitchgonyea9819 Is it possible the barrel is too long and is slowing down the projectile? I've chrono'd with a Magnetospeed v3 and a Garmin Xero so I know I'm not crazy with what I'm getting.
Waaaaaay out there. That is a challenge! I see these 6mm BR, 7mm Claymore...I have not heard of them. Are those cartridges designed or made for the types of competitions EC and the Team compete in? The .308 fellow, i was trying to figure what was happening with the random odd shot placement.
What spotting scope and video camera combination is that for such clarity?
I wonder why those shooting the .308 don’t use
- 1:10 twist or 1:9
- 200 gr match bullets to buck the wind
- heavier chassis
Maybe it’s just me that has Ben shooting the .308 since 1994 and knows that you can shoot light / fast….but wind deflection is big / or shoot slow and heavy and it’s dead on, regardless of caliber.
230 grain bullets in the .300 Win Mag buck the wind very well.
200-220 grain bullets in the .308 do the same.
140 grain A-tips in the 6.5x47 work realy good
Just my opinion though. This is a tough challenge and looks fun

You could buy a 911 with the combined price of those rifles and goes to show just how hard it is to do this. Those 2" small targets are like hitting a 3/16" dot at 100 in gusting wind. Given even a 0.40 moa rifle with no wind will have a group of 4", youre better off getting close and just shoot dead center on the target and hope you luck out as you have about a 30% chance given the wind.

Chasing the ghost. I bet if only one would have held the same point of aim when they were so close just missing it one would have hit. I doubt any of that ammo is zero on top of one another accuracy. Great video. I do know a bit about chasing the ghost.
I held same spot for many shots. Still no luck.

If you zoom in and watch the time of impact on the last shot of the video. You hit the right leg of the frame, but you are correct it was an impact😅 far be it from me to criticize. Great shooting guys!!

That’s about as comparable as shooting an egg at a grand. Tough shoot! I could waste a lot of ammo on those little targets!
when we start feeling cocky we hang a tennis ball from a string at 1k. its amazing how many rounds you can burn in an afternoon lol. its basically a matter of luck. where you happen to hit inside that cone of fire.
It is tough but also a lot of fun. It makes you think about every shot

A 12 twist in a .308 is a bit slow for 1,000 yards. I wouldn't be surprised if those bullets are destabilizing around 850-900 yards.
