These little brush rests are adorable! They turned out so pretty! I homeschooled my kids from preschool through 8th grade and this box would've been WONDERFUL! I wish we'd had so many of the amazing things that are available now!
It’s so nice when you can do not only something new or use a new product from an art box, but actually make something you can use no matter how simple it may be! I have a couple of simple brush rests like this in ceramic that came as perks with little ceramic palettes that I bought and they are terrific! Keeps my brush from rolling away or let me put my loaded brush down without getting paint on my table. But yours are in such fun colors!
Awww wow they turned out so cute!! Even if you’re not an artist you could use them to keep pens and pencils from rolling away ✏️ I’d love to see what Lila created
I made a brush rest recently with air dry clay. I rolled out a rectangular slab about 1/8" thick and pressed Micron pens, paint brushes and crochet needles into the flat surface. Then to decorate it l carved simple designs into the edges. I poked holes into the design so I can poke pins into it. I painted the entire DRY clay with a metallic gray and blue acrylic paint to help waterproof it. Now I have a place to put pins and anything that might want to roll off my desk.
Simple, functional, beautiful. R&L products are marvelous. And yes, I'd love to see what your daughter made! I've had my eye on panda chopstick rests to use as brush rests, but hmmm, to make my own. Oh Gawl, please don't get me started on another hobby.
Oh that’s a great idea! I have lots of cray to bake!!!! I love the idea to keep my brushes from taking off my work table!!!! Thanks for a great video!!!
Oh my! How did you know I needed this! I just hate it when I place brushes on my small table while I’m painting beads and other little objects and before I know it, they roll right off the table and become tossing toys for my cat and dog! What a simple, yet great idea! Thank you!
Ooh! Thanks for the Mod Podge tip! 😁 I had a 'paint splodge' on a paper towel from a painting class years ago which I allowed to dry and scanned onto my computer. I can't tell you how useful that's been in my digital art!
I hadn't seen that air dry clay before and it looks like it would be fun to play with. I think it could be fun to try doing a sculpture. Thanks for sharing this.
I was in a goodwill store the other day and saw a couple old-fashioned type, white, ceramic ashtrays. I don’t smoke so almost passed them up and then noticed the notches. Perfect for my watercolor brushes! I bought 2. This is such a cute and functional idea!
I just love your SmartArt Box reviews. I am in the process of severely downsizing and don't have an inch of space for additional supplies, otherwise I would so subscribe! How fun!
Oh boy i love these for brushes and chopsticks so cute and easy!! I must have learned to add glue to paint from you in one of your old videos because i just painted a fixed broken frog and added glue to the pant and he looks beautiful! This was fun! thank you
You could also make a crocodile and his tail for the pencils to rest on. My clay is similar and dried in 2 days, but maybe it depends on how fresh it is, or which brand. I made Christmas ornaments, made a piece flat, pressed a chrochet work print on it, used star shaped cookie baking forms to cut the shape, poked a small gap with a toothpick, applied glue while still wet and blew fine glitter over it, on both sides. Nice ribbon, and ready. I hope there is someone who reads your comments to be able to use this idea. Thanks for showing, The tip on the transparent paint was very usefull 🥰
What a great way for me to use up the air dry clay I have! I bought it to make mixed media elements. But it's kind of hard on the hands using those silicone molds. Now I will make paint brush holders! Thanks, Lindsay!
awesome project - i have wanted a brush holder since I started watercolour painting but hadn’t got around to buying one and i have 1/2 pack of clay left over from making Christmas ornaments with my preschool children. Tanks for the inspiration
What a great idea. I have regular air dry clay but I'm sure it will work when painted with acrylic paint. Keeping the brushes elevated helps them to air dry better too. Brushes ain't cheap ya know. 💞
I make chopstick rests from the paper on the chopsticks when we actually get to eat in a restaurant. Fold the paper in half end to end, then fold again. Then fold in half from side to side so you have sort of a tent shape. It gives you enough height to keep the tips off the table.
What a great Idea! I used the clay in my box to create a little fall scene with the prompts that it came with. Now I need to make these as they would be so useful :)
I think that this is a brilliant idea to corral my brushes while painting!! I probably won’t leave wet brushes to dry on it just because they might get too much water backing up into the ferrule. Maybe I could make it a bit flatter or use two with the flatter one at the front so that the angle of the brush is aiming down? Thank you!!
I would never have thought of using gloss medium mixed with the acrylics to make a ceramic glaze effect. That's going to be so helpful for when I want to achieve that ceramic effect with air-dry clay. Also, I believe air-dry clay is completely different from polymer clay, but I don't know if the sculpey brand is a bit different.
I did not know I needed brush rests until I saw this. Mine will be made of polymer clay (using up stash), and I will save the acrylic and clear medium paint tips for other projects. 😁
LOL, that's what I used to use my son's playdough for. I didn't allow them to use it at home due to living in rentals with carpet. I'd use it to hold fake flowers in baskets. It hardens well
great idea i just so happen to have homemade clay from white bread and pva glue ive been doing roses ,i learned it from aleenes craft show in the 90si am going to make these with the rest.thank you
Great idea! I’d like to take it one step further and make two that sit next to each other with one being higher than the other so you can have the water going away from the ferule! For the same reason I have the Paint Puck cup and brush holder to dry my paint brushes. I wish I’d have thought of it first!
I think it's better to keep the brushes in heads-down position when they are wet because the water goes under the metal and slowly damages the glue inside. I have a paperbox (without the lid), cut down one side lower than the opposite side and cut small triangles in both sides. It holds the brushes in downwards position until they get dry. :)
I use an iron rooster that belonged to my mom and grandmother. I no longer have a water dropper though, I use a mio bottle, but a water dropper is still on my search and grab list of thrifts.
Go on Amazon, look up Teenitor 3ML Plastic Transfer Pipette. They are $7 for 100. I use them for everything. I mix some glycerin into some of my paints that dry very hard and dry into the pans when I pour them. I have a lifetime supply!
This looks fun! I miss working with clay. Making ceramic stuff was so fun in college. XD My cousin taught me to make a chopstick rest out of the paper wrapping they come in. XD Though normally I just rest my chopsticks on my plate. Never on the table.
I think it’s best to just use a non slip mat if your brushes roll away. Setting them on an incline will make the water seep into the ferrule which will eventually loosen the glue.
Love this idea!💜💜💜 Merry Christmas from Arrabella, the Netherlands ❤️p.s my jungest daughter is called Laila, probably a different spelling, I named her after her egyptian grandma, she's half egyptian 👍🏻so I used that spelling as well, loved your tutorial 💜💜💜
Thanks Lindsay. I wonder if this would work with the crayola air dry clay. It's very light and dries in just a day or two. So cute and easy, love it. 👍😊💜
This looks fun! Could I use the clay in my silicone molds? I have several made by Mod Podge that I use to make embellishments. Thanks for sharing the tip about thinning acrylic paint, too. I always learn something from you! 😊
Sorry this post isn't about your awesome video but I have a request/suggestion. I just saw that the guy who makes the blackest black and pinkest pink paints came out with THE WORLD'S COLOURIEST WATER COLOR SET. I would love to see you test the product out. It says it is nonprofit so that even though it is a professional set of 36 colors with a water brush its not only under $100 its only $62. If it really blends and works like other professional watercolors I was thinking about buying it. So far the best set I have is a set of 18 Winsor & Newton traveler set. I did start with cheap sets and then got a small Sakura set that I was unimpressed with. I really want to buy a larger set of professional watercolors but I am uncertain about what to get. I am not a great artist but I find water color soothing. I have even considered just buying open stock after watching some of your reviews. I thought this set with its high pigment pay off may at least be a good starting place. I would really love to see what you think. Sincerely, a crafter with information over load and a need for a jump off point into higher grade paints. PS: Thanks for all your beautiful tutorials. I have learned so much of the years. I have saved a lot on so many crafting materials because of you. I'm sure my husband appreciates it just as much.
Listen, I hear this a lot buy what really damages brushes is not putting them tip up in a cup after washing. Its leaving them in the water. I have never, in all my decades painting, had a brush damaged from being tip up in a cup after washing ket along drying on a slight incline. The only time I have had a ferrule go loose, or a handle crack or swell had been when I left the brush in the water overnight. All this to say the brush rest is more to keep your brush from rolling away while you are working.
These little brush rests are adorable! They turned out so pretty! I homeschooled my kids from preschool through 8th grade and this box would've been WONDERFUL! I wish we'd had so many of the amazing things that are available now!
The first time you folded the wax paper I saw a butterfly. Nice. Good idea those brush holders. Karen from Canada

So would I :-)

I love playing. with the leftover paint by folding it.
I LOVE your smart art box reviews! TFS!
“They go on little adventures sometimes when you’re painting “-Lindsay ✌🏼🌈✌🏼

"Ribbons and bows, always a beautiful thing to see, winter soltis do not leave-Lynn.
Lindsay, you're awesome.🤶🎅❤👍
They also make fantastic Pen rests for Calligraphy enthusiasts as well!! Dip pens especially but also fountain pens too!!
Wow beautiful 👏👏👏💯💯💯
Oh that’s a great idea! I have lots of cray to bake!!!! I love the idea to keep my brushes from taking off my work table!!!! Thanks for a great video!!!
Removes brush from behind ear, looks like my brushes will have a handy new home 🤭
Great for resting dip pens too 👍
Oh my! How did you know I needed this! I just hate it when I place brushes on my small table while I’m painting beads and other little objects and before I know it, they roll right off the table and become tossing toys for my cat and dog! What a simple, yet great idea! Thank you!
Yes, everything is a cat toy in my house. I have many "secure" boxes for my art supplies just because of this!
Adorable & useful! I love it!
Ooh! Thanks for the Mod Podge tip! 😁
I had a 'paint splodge' on a paper towel from a painting class years ago which I allowed to dry and scanned onto my computer. I can't tell you how useful that's been in my digital art!
Love this! I'm in the hospital bored at 3am.. and I need some fast artist gift ideas.. this is great one! Thanks so much!
Praying you feel better soon!
I bet Lindsay’s cheerful voice makes everything better! Take care Melinda 💛💛🧡🧡🧡
Great idea, and soo cute.
Thank you so much for the gloss medium tip.
Your painting was pretty.
Super cute brush rests... also great when using colored pens and pencils, I'm always chasing those down!!!
I’ve been wanting a brush rest- and I actually have this clay... why didn’t I think of this?!!!! Thank you for the idea!!!
This might be simple, but what a great idea! I loved it! Thanks Lindsay.
i'm going to make paint brush rests! Excited :) Merry Christmas Lindsay. Stay well!
I hadn't seen that air dry clay before and it looks like it would be fun to play with. I think it could be fun to try doing a sculpture. Thanks for sharing this.
What a great idea! I have a slanted table and I’m always loosing brushes when they roll under my mixing pallet. Adds air dry clay to list.
This was really timely! I’ve been wanting to make a brush holder...❤️. Thanks Lindsay!
I was in a goodwill store the other day and saw a couple old-fashioned type, white, ceramic ashtrays. I don’t smoke so almost passed them up and then noticed the notches. Perfect for my watercolor brushes! I bought 2. This is such a cute and functional idea!
I use ashtrays for that too and collecting pencil shavings as they are heavy and sturdy. I like the colored glass ones!
I just love your SmartArt Box reviews. I am in the process of severely downsizing and don't have an inch of space for additional supplies, otherwise I would so subscribe! How fun!
They turned out great. I deed to make a couple for myself.
Oh boy i love these for brushes and chopsticks so cute and easy!! I must have learned to add glue to paint from you in one of your old videos because i just painted a fixed broken frog and added glue to the pant and he looks beautiful! This was fun! thank you

Great idea ❤️

I've painted regular air-dry clay with acrylics mutiple times before without issue.
I made some too last month using clay ,love the colors I painted them black using acrylic inks , I made tiny pallets too ♥
I bought some clay without a huge reason to use it, and this will be my reason! Thanks.
Wonderful!
great for crochet and knitting needles !
Oh! Good idea!

I was thinking of the same thing...
That's a awesome idea! And just what I needed, bc I put my brushes on my water glasses that's not very convenient...

I knew what you were painting early on so obviously it wasn’t that bad :)

Probably
Would be cool to use stamps on the sides of the clay, I think it would make them look more like ceramic when you glaze them

I'll see what I can find!
I would really love to know how those paints fair, there's no pigment information on them but they look interesting.
Ciao, come hai creato l'effetto ceramica?
I've used regular air dry clay; but, it will break if dropped on the floor. Will the polymer clay break if dropped?
If you make it thick like this it won't as it is a ro of plastic
What a cute easy idea would I be able to do this with my daughters playdoo????mikelle art mom👩🎨✍🎨
Sure
Wouldn’t the water just seep into the metal part of the brush if they’re leaning like that? Gravity would just drag the water downwards

All this to say the brush rest is more to keep your brush from rolling away while you are working.
The clay will keep for awhile if you keep it in a zip lock bag.
Wish I’d seen this before I spent 13.00 on one.
