I would say the latter is much better since in this case, we know that you can be evil thus you will be able to defend yourself against evil people who can only be stopped by evil, where in the first scenario all we know is that you are born good and we know nothing about your capability of being evil (which you probably don't have if you are born good)

There are many men better than you or me who sacrifice their lives every day to fight evil men. Also to Roger Abraham, that is exaclty what that statement means. Good men who collectively AND individually are more dangerous than the weak and evil who will try to cast their shadow on the world.

Knockdown, this gentleness of character, alongside the ability to do violence is the essence of the "iron fist in a velvet glove". It is what Lord Byron termed "the cultured thug" and it is an ethos with which I agree. To be gentle and non-violent when one is weak, timid and has no real choice is not necessarily a sign of virtue. Many people who are small, weak, non-intelligent or low on the social scale people are very aware of what they perceive to be their shortcomings and are rather bitter, nasty people, but their anger merely burns out in frustrated, impotent rage because they never have the means to give action to their nasty desires. A person who is stronger and therefore has the means with which to destroy, but chooses not to do so, is more truly virtuous. Someone once said that a gentleman is someone who can play the bagpipes but doesn't. A flippant, amusing remark, but nonetheless accurate. It's the choice to exercise restraint that counts.

In 5 months of watching Jordan Peterson in the office (we're allowed to watch youtube), I've gone from being totally useless and pathetic resentful lost male all my life to an employee of the month, winning at most domains in my life and projected towards a journey of meaning. I cannot thank this man enough. I wish to shake his hand someday. Thank you very much Mr. Peterson, we can say that you somehow saved me from at least a decade of more darkness in my life.

it's about accepting your shadow and using it as a compass rather than controlling it. let your shadows impulses guide you, what you do not like about yourself or others if projected tells you a lot about yourself. use it, don't ignore it. ignorance feeds problems, never solves them.

You might have unhealthy thought patterns caused by different negative events or traumas. For instance, your father was violent in your household and you we're constantly feeling afraid. There is a high chance that you will keep projecting this trained-in feeling from your unconscious to the present by becoming violent yourself or afraid of men or having a wrong picture of what it feels like to be a good Father and so on.

Unfortunately.. A lot of people are thinking its wrong to defend themselves or others if need be and they also think that freedom is wrong... But at least I haven't been brainwashed to be like that - I want to be free from statism in the near future and regardless of the law, I'd want to make my own guns since I both find them interesting and that I'd have some uses for them.. Like self-defence, hunting etc. and I'd make my own because of terrible gun laws.
Its not just needs either lol I find guns interesting (I also find other stuff interesting), my point was that I don't like the idea of the law controlling people.

The greek word 'praos' means he who has a calm demeanor without anger blow-ups. It has a huge difference with the english word 'meek' which means calm&submissive. It is quite similar with the 'ataraxia' (imperturbability) of the stoics, meaning being in a state of no trepidation regardless of the circumstances.
The term "Praeus" is actually used to refer to a horse- it means humble and obedient, not what you mentioned.
@@PRASANTHTHOMAS-hx3nh No, the word is NOT used to describe a horse, it is an adjective that describes an attribute. It could also be used on a horse to distinguish a tamed horse from a wild one. The word "praos" means having a mild, calming, sweet, soft, relaxing demeanor.
In our context it is referring to a person and his feelings, his internal status, his feelings and demeanor. It is a person that is calm and everyone next to him feels at ease.

I learnt to use my dark side when things had gone miserably wrong for me. It was about adapting to the environment at that time. Getting through a single day was equal to a war that lasted a decade.
I honestly can’t go back to what I used to be. A pathetic people pleaser, who didn’t speak up against tyranny.
Now it’s a journey about fusing both the light and the dark side as one. Bringing out the best in me.

You’ve misunderstood what Toxic Masculinity is though. (Not that I can blame you, there’s misinformation spread about way too many political issues) It’s not that masculinity itself is toxic, it’s that the idea that men should exclusively portray culturally masculine traits and suppress culturally feminine traits is toxic. Basically that boys shouldn’t cry, if you don’t sleep with her on the first date you have the big gay, etc. It’s more controlling of people that try to hide their fragile sense of masculinity, but it still affects every guy to some extent.

For many years I repressed my feelings of anger for being sexually abused by family members. I was told by my mother, who was told by a catholic priest when she asked him for counsel, to "leave it in the hands of god." I didnt know what that meant when i was 14 years old and reaching out for help for the first time. Every time I wanted to talk about it and how it was affecting me, she told me to try to be understanding. That I didn't know why those men did what they did and that I needed to forgive them. I didnt get any sincere apology when I confronted them myself years later, only excuses. I found out that one, my oldest brother, had been abused too when he was a child but they were both much older than me when they abused me when I was 8 years old. I tried to reflect on what happened and try to see if any of it was my own fault, or if I could of somehow prevented it and I wanted to learn from it. I didnt want to be a victim and be weak, I didnt want to be like them and hurt another person. I couldn't really ask myself if something like that happened to me again because I am a grown woman now and I can defend myself from a man. But I asked myself what if I saw someone doing what happened to me to another child. And I quickly though I would murder him on the spot with my bare hands, or beat them within an inch of their life. I don't know if that is wrong but I felt so good knowing I was thinking that.

I realized I had darkness long ago. I also realized that it required attention to be managed. What I also realized, was sometimes (unintentionally) I would express that part of myself, and it truly intimidated people. That's when I tried to push away that part of myself, to be more appealing to others, to be NOT a dangerous person in their mind. I've been trying to find myself again over the last few years after a relationship that nearly killed me. I'm now rediscovering that darkness all over again, and this video has helped me feel comfortable with my capabilities with it, or rather the possibilities it has. I've known all people have darkness, but I was convinced that it was our job, to hide that part of ourselves, to make ourselves more convenient for the people around us to deal with.

Anger is scary. I've experienced myself how dark my thoughts can get once I'm truly angry, and it's surprised me to no end to see that there was something alleviating about simply allowing myself to feel that anger once it manifests. i have no desire to hurt anyone in my daily life, so facing the fact my brain can still supposedly flip into this primal mode that finds joy in killing in a fantasy setting, say in a video game or something, and that it could actually provide major relief to simply accept this about myself has helped me, a lot. It's almost comical to notice how much enjoyment I can take in killing people in GTA or something. It's fucking weird that this is possible lol.
I read something long ago that stuck with me, which went something like...
It is not that I am powerless that I fear, it is that I am powerful beyond measure.
I always remember that when I get angry and feel the red mist cloud my judgment. It takes a split second to change yours and someone else's life. It doesn't take strength or courage, it can happen by accident even, when you are driving and texting at the same time and a teenager walks out in front of you. Always know that you have the power to make a real difference, and being powerful isn't something to aspire to be, it's something to respect and be responsible for.

Can't count how many times I've been mind blown by this man across multiple videos
From my experience working with at-risk youth. I've learned that calculated violence can do a lot of good and being nice and gentle can get people hurt. When you see potential violence you need to shut it down hard. And you'll notice that people will not only respect you more, because you created a place where people feel safe.
You can develop many abilities some would consider ... unnatural ... even your Dark Side.

I tried to be brutally honest with myself about myself. I am a short sighted slob, and I hate being critisized. I am short sighted because I do not think of my own survival, because I never had to provide for myself. I am a slob and I hate the mess I create, and I hate myself for the mess I create, and I hate myself because I cannot get rid of the mess. I opress myself in the way that I am alone. I am alone, which causes me pain, and I am the one that keeps myself alone. And I am alone because I fear rejection. Rejection makes me miserable and angry. Rejection and critisizm makes me internally hostile. Every problem I have is created by myself. My suffering comes from myself. Yet I blame others for my problems because I fear the blame. And I fear responsibility.
That's because you have interpersonal communication issues

I am exactly the persona, which Peterson talked about. I really thought and said to everybody that my harmlessness is a consequence of my morality, but the truth is I’m not capabale of harm and I disguised it with my motality. I’m not capable to defend myself and have low self-confindence aswell. I think I knew that I’m that kind of person, but subconsiously I ignored it and lied to myself. Maybe someone have an advice as a solution to this problem?

I've tried ignoring my dark side several times. I've had a hard past to deal with and a lot of aggression and some delusion, I think, has come out of it. I don't like facing it, because I don't want to turn into the people that have hurt me. I feel like I'm manipulative, I have some very aggressive capabilities to be hurtful with words, I feel like I could turn into a snake and bend people's will if I'd like, I think I could very easily switch from a good person to a selfish person and hurt someone. All of these things scare me, and I don't know how to handle them or what to do with them or if I should do anything with them at all.

Take your time, but do it if you can. It won't be easy. You sound like you have a strong shadow. Once you can safely use it, you will be much stronger.
There's a scene in X-Men: First Class, Mystique is lifting weights while in her human form. Magneto walks by and increases the weight of the bar. She struggles, and turns into her natural form and lifts the extra weight. He tells her that when she is shapeshifted, part of her will in focused inward. When she's not repressing her true form (which she is terribly embarrassed by and represses constantly), she has access all her willpower.
That could be you. You would be able to do anything.
Cinnamon The Cat the shadow is just as much a part of you as your consciousness. To repress it just makes your shadow stronger. To acknowledge its existence makes you an enlightened person. To acknowledge your shadow and to refrain from acting on it makes you a saint or holy man. To know your shadow and to act out the desires of your dark side makes you a monster.

That’s weird because those fantasies aren’t courageous, all losers do that because they have some built up anger. Your dark side must be courageous, not weak. Thinking of dark twisted fantasies is a weak thought for mentally unstable people
Had this same "resentment" experience at a medium-sized corporation where a select few individuals were given free reign to behave as they wished, even to point of criminal activity among them treated as inconsequential. I approached the CEO directly, pointing out, accurately, that this practice was creating two classes of employees, creating loads of resentment among the employees who were not in the enclave and was contributing to most of the issues within the company.
Unsurprisingly nothing happened. When I left it, among various other reasons, was the first reason I wrote for leaving. Those I've kept in touch with have indicated still nothing has changed even after the company was bought out by a larger organization. Like one would expect, all of the good, productive, employees all want to leave as soon as they can.

The ability to repress the evil impulses not only let's the good win but personally it makes you feel good in the brain because it's like you won against an fundamental evil. Every time you display a good deed over a bad deed it's a mini victory over tyranny, it may even boost confidence.
What you mention is not repressing. You cannot say you did a good deed if the bad deed wasn't an option. Of all your darkness is suppressed your not good, you just can't access it. If you are perfectly capable of bad, and don't choose it, but also don't suppress it, your good

Im working real hard to turn those crazy violent fantasies into songs and art! God help the world if i didn't have the ability to perform. Id become real a danger. Ive been so poorly treated and thank god for all his gifts to me to be able to navigate all that anger and frustration into art
i never could listen mr. Peterson's lectures in the university videos.. felt he was rambling and all over the place. but this talking directly to the Webcam videos are a different quality, clear, insightful and highly interesting

I am currently in psychodynamic therapy (through a specialist service for people with personality disorders - myself having borderline PD). I’m in the process of shedding my persona and accepting/incorporating my shadow into my character. All my life I have been refusing to accept that I am capable of the negative - to the point that I completely separated any negative thought/feeling/action to that of a separate entity which had a name and a voice (a delusion and auditory hallucination). I believed I was incapable of being ‘bad’, now I see that it was juvenile and naive. I am getting to know myself for the first time. I’m unlocking my potential. It feels like I’m waking up for the first time. I feel more powerful as the weeks go by. This video has helped me clarify my therapy experience and given me a greater understanding of my transformation. Thank you Jordan Peterson.

I just quitted a toxic work environment. We tried to speak, but no one listened to us. It had very obvious negative psychological consequences on all of us. A lot of people quitted the job, and by now they have been replaced. Fuck, man, sometimes you can't win and just need to jump ship as soon as you can. Thanks Jordan!
"People who are capable of force but who decide not to use it...." Maybe one good practical approach to developing your shadow is to start doing Jiu Jitsu or Muay Thai or Kickboxing.

Now obviously there are benefits to training. But what he means within the context of the story is that what good is training if you don't have the mindset or will to use it when it's needed?
Train yourself (mentally and physically) to be a sword that is sheathed and have the discipline to unsheathe it only when need and immediately sheathed when it's no longer needed.

I've always been in touch with my feminine side and my dark side at least since mid way through puberty. I really just figured out by myself that it is more manly to be yourself truly and damn others shallow petty insecure judgements than to step in line and force yourself to pretend you like things or do things because others deemed that's what is manly to them. Though tbf I consciously fought to overcome peer pressure and be myself since I can remember so that played a crucial part.
You will *feel* like a man when you do what makes you happy/when you express yourself truly, you will feel like a fool and trapped in a lie if you just do what others tell you to do to be a man shaming your true self for not being that way. Which would you rather have? I'd rather be called girly and pity their insecurities they're projecting than be called manly while my insecurities grow and fester making me feel obligated to tear down others who didn't choose the same psychological prison cell as my own. Developing your dark side goes hand in hand with this. Whatever self doubt or worry I had about my more feminine interests were quelled after contemplating the dark side of humans and what others are capable of, what I am capable of, it really removed any fear of weakness that for better or worse our society presumes of femininity. Especially femininity in men.
tl;dr you can wear bright pink, makeup, and squeal like a little girl , but if you can defend yourself and loved ones and you can understand the darkness capable in yourself and others you're no less of a man than Chuck Norris or Bruce Lee.
Very idealistic, and i agree completely. However the dynamic changes when they'll kill you for wearing bright pink, makeup and squealing like a little girl. So... What do you do? Live and allow yourself to become a hollow tyrant like them? Ooooor do you... Do you just kill them all first or die trying? Because you don't always get to win every game? Ofcourse you do that, because they're degenerating. And just like that you've become an antagonists in the narative of their little overtone window... Welcome to life jimmy. And yes those guys talking about "freedoms" way back when were really onto something... That Grace men devolope when they become self aware of just what they are capable of... The problem is you have already sectioned off parts of yourself and deemed them evil, "shadow" parts. This can only occur if you are already judging yourself based on certain moral concepts. Nietzsche's approach is the opposite of Jung's. Instead of accepting the schizophrenic-moral interpretation of the self and trying to integrate the two sides, Nietzsche critiques the very principles of morality that make you perceive yourself as split in the first place.
yup, but i don't think it would be applicable to consider one's self detached of some kind of judgment system where we can affirm some actions and condemn others. My take from Nietzsche would be to question why we think evil is bad, not to abandon the whole system itself and live in a vacuum space where our actions don't hold any real weight. There would be no feedback because there would be no point in distinguishing good deeds from bad ones

Great talk Jordan, I've had darker tendancies for years that i've gone through various stages with, sometimes i feel shame, anger, pride towards those feeling sometimes i feel hyper sensitive to those feelings and other times i feel as cold as ice.
I feel like i'm capable of great violence and evil but i haven't had cause to unleash it, sometimes i'm grateful sometimes i'm resentful of this.
I feel like i'm a contradiction of conflicting emotional states.
I am also a bit obsessed with my own psyche, sometimes i feel strong as a mountain and others as weak as a blade of grass.
Sometimes i wish i was normal and other times i wish i was as dark as night.
A constant internal debate is my curse.

How does someone who never delved into their shadow, be able to use his shadow with enough grace and utility so that he/she can defend them-self, without going too far off the deep end where they now become their shadow? Someone who's never been in an argument or in a fight isn't going to be able to go equal or win overnight and I fear that people who win or lose using their shadow will never use it again or become the exact thing they feared would happen.
well there's self defence classes, and I think it's a matter of gradual buildup, daring to express more radical sentences over time for example.
you have to understand that the shadow is not waiting for you to discover and integrate it, you are acting it out without really noticing it and only when you notice and integrate it then you are free to choose how to act. Investigate the things that piss you off, why you react that way? In most cases it is almost like something possesses you and you act that way suddenly. And you don't really know why you acted that way, something pissed you off. Explore that, see where that leads you.
Your genuine attempt at being ethical and honest is also our psychotherapy.
You develop your dark side by accepting the part of yourself that is dark. Once you've accpeted them and integrate them to your personality, you have one power tool at your disposal. You basically have hell as your weapon.
How can someone find their dark side if you've spent your whole life trying to justify it by saying it isn't dark at all but an actual asset? Or is this what Jung was saying about the acceptance of the shadow, but don't you need to have a serious recognition of what is your dark side in the first place to find your shadow? Or does it not matter as long as you get the correct answer?
You have multiple shadows... Which hell then will you unleash? What are the consequences of your unbridled sins? Personally my wrath could destroy the universe, so after i realised that... I didn't touch on any of the others.
Logic If you never repress yourself & have a functioning system of morality by which you live by, then you wont need to intergrate your shadow. If you are a medically recodnised psychopath then you ARE your shadow, and you have no light at all. The two states i've descriped are polar opposites to each other.

this resonantes so much with me right now, thank God (if there is one) for people like Peterson and many others down the history line... Suffering from Depression and stark social withdrawal right now, I can feel these dark feelings I have sometimes to my fellow men while at the same time being hyper agreeable and try not get in anyones way at the outside (my mask). To overcome that self-developed victimhood, you have to face your dark side and own it or at least make peace with it and that is what you are strugglint with... When you don't own up to your errors and insecurities and questionable deeds in the past, you will let that take control of you.... anger, resentment, fear, envy, this will all come from this personal hell that you don't allow to deal with or at least offer the chance to manifest (and be gone ---> returning yourself to some kind of equilibrium again), then it will violently erupt at some point (the horrible deeds peterson talked about, coming rather from weakness then from strength).
on a sidenote: writing a depression diary has helped so far a little. I think that is a comparable approach to the writing course Peterson and a few colleagues offer to sort yourself out and plan your life. It is not the same of course, but a small beginning.
I enjoy being what I call "mean" to others. Not listening when I don't want to, ignoring calls, not giving a damn, if I answer back I'm being wild and my family is so shocked lol, if they only knew this sassy girl was hiding all these years underneath my overly nice persona. I still struggle with guilt for putting boundaries but, the more I practice the better I get at it and the better I take care of myself ❤
There is a difference between watching your resentment to develop your shadow and just being evil to those around you...
Shadow work on myself has been one of the most rewarding stages of my life. I'm moving from weak and resentful (in part at least) to strong and a literal fighter. l've found Brazilian Jujitsu to be a very useful tool in manifesting this idea in my own conscious mind....and it feels good! It feels good to be masculine and know you can handle yourself in a fight, but don't have to fight because you know its not good to. That's the basic idea of Jujitsu. I would advice anyone who thinks fighting is a fundamentally abhorrent violent act with no purpose to try it. I think Jujitsu is a perfect example of what Jung talks about here and it would be a good idea for any hippy/leftie type to try. I realise though most will be scared to embrace this part of themselves, as I was for most of my life. I'm 42 now and feel a new stage of enlightenment about myself.
I understand Peterson, I understand how to develop my dark side but what about my edgy side?

That was my issue. Get bit in the butt for being to compassionate and never developed my dark side or shadow. Has caused many problems in my life.
