- In light of the recent news of Toys "R" Us going out of business after some 60 years, here's a just discovered rare vintage ad from their glory days - with the mascots in costume doing a little square dance to some hoedown music inside the store aisles led by Geoffrey the giraffe, with Gigi and Baby Gee joining in.
Featuring Thurl Ravenscroft as the voice of Geoffrey Giraffe and Russi Taylor as the voice of Baby Gee.
"Do-si-do and away we go / Toys 'R' Us is putting on a show!"
This aired on local Chicago TV on Thursday, October 27th 1977 at a little before 1:30pm.
This was from a tape donated to The Museum of Classic Chicago Television as part of The Mike and Britta Fayette Collection.

Very interesting hearing Thurl Ravenscroft voicing Geoffrey!
A great commercial! Love the music and the dancing! Those dancers were fantastic! It couldn't have been easy dancing in those big bulky giraffe costumes! Kudos to them!

I believe the Geoffrey mascot costume is actually older than this commercial- Geoffrey’s neck isn’t that tall in the animated Toys “R” Us time of year advert, released earlier on in 1976. This is clearly a late 60s-early 70s costume, due to both the long neck and realistic-ish head. This is most definitely a Dr. G. Raffe era Geoffrey, maybe the exact same one featured in the Tap Dance advert from 1972, because he’s wearing the same hat from that advert. Put them side by side and you’ll see what I mean. This is also (I believe) the last time we fully saw 60s Geoffrey. He would continue into the later adverts, appearing on the Toys “R” Us storefront in the background, before completely disappearing when the 80s rolled in. He would make one last televised appearance, in an ad from 1981. The ad involves a Sherlock Holmes-like character wandering around a Toys “R” Us store. At the end of the advert, he says “I detect perfection in this store’s selection!” and accidentally sets off a switch marked ‘DANGER’. This is where an old 60s Geoffrey neon sign, alongside a primitive Toys “R” Us logo, makes its final appearance, on the side of a very primitive brown-roof rainbow-stripe Toys “R” Us store. This also marks one of the few times Baby Gee spoke, as she and Gigi were mainly quiet through their run. Another time 60s Geoffrey appeared was in The Blues Brothers, released in 1980. He appears with a cropped neck alongside a primitive Toys “R” Us logo on the side of the Dixie Square Mall. He is blocked in most scenes by a canopy that stands in front, you can only see him from a distance in the wide shots of the parking lot chase.

Toys "R" Us is back after being bailed out from bankruptcy by Macy's. The only catch is you have to go to a Macy's Department store to find the Toy's "R" Us section.

It took me a bajillion viewings but I've now realized that the music being used isn't some random tune used for the sake of the commercial; it's a country styled version of "The World's Biggest Toy Store" jingle. xD

Thanks for uploading! It's going to be really hard to miss this toy store after 70 years of being open. At least we can relive all of the commercials on RUclips. There is a lot of Toys R Us commercials from the 70s, 80s and 90s on RUclips at least. I went there a few times myself from a different age.
