Hey guys! I mistakenly credited the Ghost Host to Ravenscroft instead of Paul Frees. You’d think someone who has a Haunted Mansion Podcast would know this.... 🤦🏼♂️
I am glad to see this as well! The store I ran my liquidator made sure the costumes were locked up for no one to sneak away. The Toys R Us company made us put them on a truck to send back to a warehouse. I have a sad video of putting the costumes on the truck and saying goodbye.
I went there when I was a baby because they have a part where it is called (babys r us) witch my mom and famliy went too when I wa s born too get my stuff but I don’t remember going there
I never met Geoffrey at any store, BUT the hospital I work in had a long-time partnership with Toys R Us and we have a GIANT two-story Geoffrey statue in our Lobby that kids and adults alike still get excited about.
I remember being MAD when they redesigned Geoffery in 2007. You can joke all you want about the realistic version, but I saw him in ads and on signs around the store my whole childhood. Then they flattened him? Made him boring? Turned his spots into stars??? That was NOT the friend who sent me birthday gift-cards every year!
Toys R Us was my first job back in 2012 where I worked for one (1) whole month. We were told that if we were ever suspicious of someone in the store to call in a “code Geoffrey”
Toys R Us has come a long way, remember when it went bankrupt but later became a smaller business? Those times were crazy but I'm glad the company is still around. I miss the good old days when they played their theme song in commercials.
I wouldn't consider that "comeback" as something to applaud quite yet. Both times they attempted to re-open stand-alone brick-and-mortar stores-- only *two*, one in New Jersey and one in Texas, and *both* ended up closing after barely two years. Their "grand idea" to open 200 smaller stores across the United States never happened. They only have *one* physical store open, and it's located inside a Macy's-- _another_ retail company that has had to shut down many of *their* stores because they're not making enough money! That's like a kiss of death! What moron buys a bankrupt company and decides to partner with another company that has _also_ declared bankruptcy in very recent history?
Man I miss going to Toys R Us. I passed what used my local store every day on the way to school these past few years and it just makes me feel sad. The sign’s still up and everything, and it makes me wish I could’ve worked there.
Got to meet Geoffrey several times. In fact, my husband and I did a "farewell event" dressed up as our Stormtrooper and biker scout as we are both in the 501st.
Casting Thurl Ravenscroft as Geoffrey the Giraffe is kinda fitting knowing the deep sounds giraffe make (it's somewhat disturbing). Although, I doubt the ad makers & casting directors knew it at the time, it's a relatively new discovery.
I worked at Toys R Us during its final year. You honeslty wouldn't have thought they were going out of business. Every day was pretty full, and that's considering that this Toys R Us sat right next to a Walmart and a Best Buy. Pretty much its biggest competitors: Best Buy for video games, and Walmart for everything else. Also, throughout all my years, whether as a kid or as an employee, I had never seen Geoffrey at any TRU. They never brought him out, even during events. In fact, the closest that I got to Geoffrey is the fact that one time we had a "code Geoffrey" at the store. I can't really remember what it meant. It either meant "child is about to be abducted," or "potential thief." Either way, something was about to be taken against its will.
Although I do not remember seeing the Geoffrey mascot running around my local Toys R Us in the early 2000s, I do remember him calling my old house phone on my birthday every year lol.
I remember in like 2011, Toys R Us was attempting to be part of the video game craze heavily and that’s where you could go to digitally catch Pokémon legends
I never got to meet Geoffrey, and now I’m disappointed knowing other people did because I always thought the costume character was just for commercials. 😭😂
I want to Toys “R” Us a couple of weeks ago ago it’s so so fun I just got this box bunny toy and more then I went to Claire’s it’s so fun I went to the mall
Three years ago when Toys R Us was closing down, I decided to dress up as Geoffrey for Halloween, a giraffe onesie with an official Toys R Us employee shirt, and I walked around town with a Bluetooth speaker that played my 'Gone But Never Forgotten' playlist for hours. I'm forever a Toys R Us kid.
😂 My mom and dad worked at TOYSRUS when they were young adults. My mom worked in the BOOKSRUS section of the store. Dad worked as a stocker. As kids we grew up with the TOYSRUS song not only in English but Spanish. As a family we were a bit sad when the stores started closing. But what a time! What memories! 🎉
All I remember from what my parents have told me, they lost me at toy r us when I was around 3 years old, “trying” out the beds in the furniture section of the store lol.
I went to the Times Square Toy's R Us a couple of years ago or so, and I'm pretty sure there was the 2007 version of the Costume Geoffery but I don't think we interacted with him at all. I was so heartbroken when it closed.
I remember toys r us as a kid. (23 y/o here) I used to get so excited whenever i did well in school and i got to get toys as a reward😂😂 and I remember every birthday I would get a phone call from Geoffrey saying ‘Happy Birthday’ to me.
I sincerely HATE to be this guy; but the Ghost Host was voiced by Paul Frees....not Thurl. Thurl was the Singing Bust leader in the graveyard and a few other ghosts . Love the video still!!!
2000’s Geoffrey may not be everyone’s favorite, but I grew up with him so he’s mine 🥰 looked forward to getting that Christmas toy r us catalogue every year
I don't remember this particular story when it happened, but apparently when I was really really young I was riding in the shopping cart through toys r us and "Everybody Wants to Be a Cat" from Aristocats was playing over the speakers and I started singing except I sang "eh body, eh body, be cat". Our family still references that story to this day. I really liked toys r us, it was sad to go inside the one I grew up with during its last week :(
It should be said, Toys R us isn't dead! They are trying to make a comeback! They already have 3 new stores in America Malls! Geoffrey is still alive!!! Also Toys R us is still in business at Canada!
I was a Geoffrey! I only got to be in the costume for a week before closing, and somewhere on the internet there is a very blurry vertical video of me break dancing in the parking lot of the closed building! The head even falls off hallway through! My manager had been at the store so long, and was so bitter about the whole situation, that he was going to let me leave with the costume and claim it stolen. Sadly, I was living out of my car at the time and couldn't really store it. I miss that store, and that job. It was the best week I'd had, and definitely one of the best jobs, even though it came to a sad end.
I meet early 2001 Geoffrey during Christmas time, the local Toys R Us did this Wish List thing where kids got this bar scanner looking device that would scan the barcodes of toys and send it to a computer. The computer would printed a list later on what we wanted and Geoffrey was there to help kids get the toys up higher with other employees. It was fun, my little brother and I got into a competition to have the longest list. Parents were glad when they found out about that.
Being a kid who grew up in the 2000s I still remember coming home on my birthday every year to a message on the answering machine from Jeffrey the Giraffe 🥺💕
When I was a kid in NPR, Fl there was a grand opening. I remember my dad took me. The only costume characters I remember are Jeffery and his family along with the ninja turtles! I was pretty excited about TMNTs. I also remember getting my.fist pair of rollerblades from that store later for the following xmas.
I remember back in 2002, going to a very small, outta the way, shoved in the scary lookin corner of a shopping mall that always seemed to be under construction but never manifested whatever it is they were building...Toys R Us store. I bought a finger puppet of Tigger and a VHS tape of Thomas and the Magic Railway. “Meet Geoffrey!” Read a flimsy plastic sign that stood outside the door. He was never there, ever. I think they couldn’t be bothered to get the costume out of storage for whatever teen employee they planned to stick inside it to parade around a usually empty toy store, in a location nobody really went to. So the sign stayed as a thing to get people in the store 😂 I don’t doubt they brought him out for the Christmas season, but he was just never there for the rest of it.
Ah yes, TATMR, I remember having a DVD copy of that movie with tons of other Thomas DVDs, then getting a second DVD copy of the same movie, with those same iconic models, remade in brass, with a few 2009 re-releases on DVD for the classic series, some with the OG opening with so much remastered footage and others with the remastered opening and new extended shots and remastered versions of the narrations from the VHS tapes at the time, now being remastered for DVDs.
I miss this place i remember making my mom and dad take my there on forth of July and on Mother’s Day I was such a brat but I’m thankful that I remember it
I met my husband at TRU in 1986. He worked there for 37 years. We had real toys r us kids. Geoffrey came to our kids birthday parties. It was a sad day for us when they closed.
I never got to go to a Toys R Us cuz they were always so much more expensive then everywhere else so my parents wouldn't take me, which is kinda ironic actually
The Toys R Us closing was really heartbreaking for me because Geoffrey was such a big part of my childhood. I used to have a large stuffed Geoffrey that said so many cute and funny things like “have you hugged a giraffe today?” I also remember being so excited to get my annual birthday card from Geoffrey every year😂 Toys R Us and Geoffrey himself will always have a special place in my heart❤️
Gonna be totally honest, the realistic Giraffe looked the cutest and most friendly in mascot form for me. It's so cute and huggable. It's eyes are just adorable, but the modern mascot is creepy AF. Its eyes are so derpy...no thank-you.
Hey Dan, I'm making my own version of the evolution of Geoffrey the Giraffe which will be released around Black Friday. But I will be focusing more on the actual costumes and even plan on buying a Geoffrey suit on eBay. Will it be ok? Since I don't want people to think I'm ripping you off. I also love that you're doing non-Disney characters, and may I suggest Chuck E. Cheese as a future edition to Distory?
If I think of Geoffrey the Giraffe, I always think of the realistic 2000s one. That's the true Geoffrey to me. I know he was a logo, not a costume, but it's still worth mentioning. Although I never went to a ToysRUs, so I don't know why I even have a favourite. It's probably because it briefly appears in The Wild, I loved that film. And I didn't know he was an animatronic! I thought he was just CGI!
Weird, I never once saw Geoffrey when I went to Toys R Us. But we also didn’t go there too too much when I was a kid once Walmart started offering things for much cheaper. 😔 I miss Toys R Us, though. Walmart and Target just don’t have the selection that Toys R Us did, and you can’t physically go to Amazon and touch the toys and examine them before you buy them, you just get what you get, and if you’re scammed, then sucks for you. Me and one of my best friends used to go to Toys R Us just to walk around and so I could look at the dolls since I’m a bit of a doll collector, and I really miss that. You just don’t get the same experience at other stores. Our only real “toy store” is a toy store in the mall that’s run by this super creepy dude who just stares at you angrily while you walk around. Sometimes I go in there just to touch everything and not buy anything bc I know it makes him mad 😂 but it’s not nearly as fun as Toys R Us was.
After seeing that Geoffrey plush in that Evolution of Miss Piggy video, I was wondering if you would do that giraffe. It's comforting to see after I learned that tgey shut down the relaunched stores in NJ and TX (and learning that the building where my local TRU was torn down for a unnecessary medical center).
I remember going to toys r us for the first time, back in 2004 I was in the first grade, and it was my first time visiting Dubai, and I’ve got a baby born doll, good times. I’ve seen Geoffrey for the first and last time when I was 9, I was so scared of him so I didn’t get to take a picture with him
Dark Fan Theory for what happened to Jeffrey's family. His son dissapeared first right? That's because he died. This tore the family apart and Mrs. Giraffe only stayed with Jeffrey until their Daughter was grown. So with their Daughter all grown up and moved away the two split. Leaving Jeffrey all alone.
I loved working at toysrus as my winter job. minus the irate holiday customers lol but we still only had the 2001 costume we never got the update being a 'trainer' store so they were last to get any upgrades. Ours was an owned building that's still sitting empty in town :(
I don't think I ever met a Geoffrey costumed character growing up, but I really did love going to Toys R Us (I'm a late 90s baby). Even remember going to Babies R Us a lot to get our pictures taken every year and just wander around and look at all the cute baby stuff. I think I bought a lot of my first video games at Toys R Us, which ended up being a big part of my life. I remember that section of our store very well. I remember mostly switching to Target and Gamestop as I got older, but I do miss our local store. It's a furniture warehouse now, but those repainted bars on the front of the store bring back nostalgia every time I'm by there. I would definitely say I was a Toys R Us kid. Maybe not as much as generations before me, but I can conjure up a lot of memories there. Everything from scooters to board games to Legos to helping mom and dad pick out stuff to donate to Toys for Tots at Christmas. Man, I didn't even realize how much nostalgia I had for that place until I started typing this. Thanks for helping bring back some good childhood memories, Dan.

I’ve worked at a Toys “R” Us, even once wore the Geoffrey costume for the kids, there is no suck thing as a distinct smell to the store.
A candle of nostagia
I met my husband at TRU in 1986. He worked there for 37 years. We had real toys r us kids. Geoffrey came to our kids birthday parties. It was a sad day for us when they closed.
I never got to go to a Toys R Us cuz they were always so much more expensive then everywhere else so my parents wouldn't take me, which is kinda ironic actually
That sucks, my parents used to take me there and not buy anything, we just went there to look at the toys
If you ever miss toys r us it’s now open I’m west field mall so you can go in the toys r us now
A wonderful for video for those with and without nostalgia.

Omggg he is here
:0 As a kid, it offended me that we weren't actually allowed to play with the toys at Toys R Us. We got yelled at by employees and parents...
😂😂
If I think of Geoffrey the Giraffe, I always think of the realistic 2000s one. That's the true Geoffrey to me. I know he was a logo, not a costume, but it's still worth mentioning. Although I never went to a ToysRUs, so I don't know why I even have a favourite. It's probably because it briefly appears in The Wild, I loved that film.
And I didn't know he was an animatronic! I thought he was just CGI!
“I don’t wanna grow up , I wanna be a toys R us kid” now it’s like- “I guess they all grew up , No one wants to be a toys R us kid”
Hey Disney Dan, Could you do Top 10 Disney Character Bunnies including Stella Lou added?
THANKS for looking at the set!
@@DistoryDan making Lego Mixels video
I remember on like my 8th or 9th birthday getting a "phone call" with him and it's still a really fond memory
Now TOYS R US is r.i.p );
Not entirely, still exists in Canada and Australia
Yeah
Or maybe, Geoffrey was still a kid and he imagines his family.
Disney Dan sure is having a lot fun making these videos.
The start of the video I liked
I loved working at toysrus as my winter job. minus the irate holiday customers lol but we still only had the 2001 costume we never got the update being a 'trainer' store so they were last to get any upgrades. Ours was an owned building that's still sitting empty in town :(
TO FIND A WAY OUT, HAHAHA
*Geoffrey -1980S*
