- The 2024 KLX 300 stock tires have me sliding and falling all over the place. When you take the KLX 300 off road you have to watch out for mud or wet terrain. The Dunlop 605 tires are great on road, and doing some light off road. But once you get this dual sport onto some tougher terrain these tires will set you back.
Below are links to the parts and accessories I have used on my KLX 300

I just bought this bike yesterday. 24 in gray. Great content , thank you.
That’s awesome! You’re gonna have a blast, I love the way the gray ones look too.
Its a Love/Hate relationship with my 605's. I have never seen any tire go from having decent grip to ZERO grip instantly upon touching mud. Just came back from AZ, rode almost from NM to Tuscon on a gas pipeline with crazy steep climbs and loved them in the loose rock. Hated them when at sea level in soft sand. Then spent the next 2 days loving them riding pavement twisties around Saguaro Natl. Park and the city. If I lived in any soft terrain Id have different tires but after riding enduro only past 6 years Im so happy having a bike and tire thats comfortable on pavement letting me put on serious miles exploring instead of hands going numb after 30 miles. My biggest gripe with D606 and Dsport's are their heft. They are 2-3lbs heavier and taller, sapping power from the little motor. My 100-100-18 Trackmaster feels like a power mod cuz its 1lb lighter and smaller on my previous KLX's but have yet to put them on the new 300.
Man that sounds like an awesome trip. I’ve heard great things about the trackmasters too. Theres so many different options I’d like to try out eventually.
Thanks for the heads up. I live in Utah and avoid the desert if it rains-- We have some very special mud called bentonite that humbles any wheeled vehicle. This video letting me know my stock tires are crap in the mud will make me double alert about avoiding it.
Tires are such a tough issue, especially for dual sport. Dual sport itself means different things to different people. When I had a KLX300, I was using it to ride trails and only riding on pavement to connect trails. I opted for knobbies which weren't even DOT approved. That worked for me. I now have a CRF450L. I wanted to keep DOT approved tires and tried Shinko MX216s. They were better off road than on the pavement, but that's where I needed them to be better. I then used Kenda Trackmasters, which were great off road but were used up very quickly on tarmac, especially the rear tire. I tried Tusk DSport tires, as a lot of other people seem to like. I HATED the front off road but was willing to live with the rear. It's got a lot of range, but nowhere near the grip of the Kenda or Shinko tire. It breaks loose and spins a lot off road but I can tolerate that and accept it for the mileage that tire has on pavement. When it's worn out, I probably won't buy another. But I'm back to a Trackmaster up front. My riding is primarily off road biased, so I'm happy to trade pavement performance. I ride gingerly on pavement and let loose off road. If you're primarily a pavement rider who occasionally goes off road, you might be better off with a totally different tire. If I didn't ride off road like I do, I'd probably be happy with the DSport tires. They were great for a KLR650 and how I used that bike. But the front DSport was horrible in sandy single track, dangerously so.
This is Great info. I'm also in NC & I have my eye on a honda crf 300 LS - ( 2 inch lower seat height). I have been wondering how the stock tires will do on the dirt roads.
Running, the mt 21 d606 combo on my 22’ klx 300! Absolutely love them! My buddy ran the tusk on his crf 300, he said they were a pain, and just felt heavier than every other tire he tried. Also most of the Kawasaki off road forums i’ve read about tire combos, a lot of the guys are running the 606 rear. Even the hard core klr guys. Most of them recommend the 606 mt 21 combo. They weren’t that stiff to mount. Pick a hot sumner day, soak them in the morning heat, and by afternoon they should be soft enough. I will be buying another 606 mt 21 combo. They wear great too!
That’s what I like to hear. I believe that’s the combo I’m going with. Thank You!
Not knowing which way to go..... the accepted standard is D606 rear MT21 front. So I bought those and mounted them up. My thinking is, by the time I wear em down, I'll have a better idea what to go for next time.
What do you think of the combo so far? That’s what I was going to go with when I’m ready to buy new ones.
@@DerekDualSport Im pretty inexperienced and have nothing else to compare it to. Hopefully my experience and confidence will be better when they are done.
Well I hope they work awesome for you! It should definitely make off-roading easier.
@@DerekDualSport I bought 2 bikes. Both of them KLX 300. The DS I am tweaking for better offroad. I also bought a KLX 300 SM that I ride if I know I am not planning to leave pavement, so I mod each bike accordingly.
@josephthornton8560 oh wow that is awesome. Congrats!
Other than the tires , how does the KLX300 perform overall ? Trying to decide between this and the CRF300L
On my KLX 300 is switched the stock 605s for Tusk DS. Way better in the mud and sand. The no 1 upgrade everyone who rides off-road should do.
Thanks! It’s definitely going to be my next upgrade. Tusk DS is getting a lot of praise.
@@DerekDualSport Holaaa q otra cubierta recomiendas? La Pirelli mt21 rally Cross es mejor q Dunlop d605??
I have the same bike I actually like the 605s smooth right on the street no problem off road
Getting about 3000 miles off the rear
I love the 605’s on the street. This winter was a wet one, and I struggled in all the mud. My 605’s were constantly caked with mud and I’d lose all traction. I got new tires but haven’t put in enough miles to truly compare.
I find the tires do really well on hard pack trails even if they are rocky. Sure on sand and mud they arent great but that can be planned for and avoided if you know your trail.
I agree these tires are great for the right conditions, I am just hardly in those conditions, and it kind of limits when and where I can go.
If you are going to ride in the dirt, just run dirt tires. Any dual sport tire is a compromise and could contribute to crashing in the dirt. I recommend the Tusk T45 rear and the Tusk Tallon front in the 90 width. The Motoz tires are better but twice the price. The Tusk is 90% as good as the Motoz and you don’t have to feel bad about wearing them out on the street.
They are a good road/gravelroad/dry trail tire, but anything mucky they are useless. Im swapping mine out with some rocky mountain Dsports
Agreed, I’m gonna try those tires eventually too.
Do you recommend any skidplates for this bike?
I haven’t had a chance to try out any after market ones. This bike came with a stock skid plate that has been working well for me so far. 🤞
Go with motoz enduro it.. great tires and cheaper than d 606 and so much easier to mount and repair flts.. t d606 and the tusk dsport are so fn stiff you will hate them
Awesome advice thank you, I’ll add it to my list of tires to check out.
@@DerekDualSport I have them on my wr250r and switched to motoz after run tusk dsport.. the tusk dsport front tire is absolutely trash
I just bought a 24 KLX 300 a few days ago, also live in NC. Where are some good trail systems that are good for a dual sport?
The best trail systems in NC that I have found are Uwharrie, Brown Mountain and Brushy Mountain. Hopefully some more NC folks can leave some more in the comments.
Yeah I live in that same area. I’ve been to brushy before have you taken the KLX there? I need to try brown and Uwharrie out I guess
@dominicpidala4313 I’ve taken the KLX to all three, and it handles it all just fine.
I’m thinking about picking up the Tusk D sport tires. They are a lot cheaper than the pirelli Dunlop combo.
I want to try those sometime too!
Hospital bills aren’t cheap …. Spend the extra $$$ and go with the MT21/D606 combo . You will thank me later 😇
I have those mounted now and love them so far
No tires would save you from riding on the side of an embankment covered in dead leaves.
I know that bridge and those power lines, Carolina Adventure World?
I’ve never been to Carolina Adventure world, I think most of this vid I was messing around near pilot mountain. How is CAW? I’ve wanted to go there for a while.
@@DerekDualSport I like it when it rains and play in the mud with the rzr, night ride on the weekends are the best, but never been on the bike.
Tusk Dsport is all you need
I look forward to trying those out.
Oem tires on anything are inherently not great.. I wouldn’t even consider it a part of the bike to dislike/mention 😂
I get it, a lot of beginners buy these dual sport bikes too. It might be good info for them to have when making a purchase decision.
It’s a conversation about what to maybe replace them with.
It’s the first thing to talk about.
Read the comments and learn bud.
@@DerekDualSportfirst time I hit the sand I washed out. Definitely first thing worth talking about.
Oh yeah definitely! Those 605’s put me on my butt more than once 😂
Just do yourself a huge favor and put motocross tires on it !
