- In this video I go over every change I have made to the 2024 KLX 300 this winter. The KLX 300 is a fun bike stock, but one of my favorite thing about this bike is how easy they are to work on. I have upgraded the KLX 300 Suspension, Gearing, Handlebars and Foot Controls. I'd like to eventually change out the tires and exhaust, but I'm waiting for a quiet exhaust for this bike. Parts List is below.

finally someone that doesn't have the need to install a cop caller exhaust! thank you.
Haha a cop caller. I’ve never heard that one, but it’s so true.
Amen on the exhaust! Stealth is the better way. A quiet aftermarket exhaust that’s lighter would be great. Leaving my stock exhaust installed.
I picked up a 2024 KLX300 last week. Thank you for the informative video, and especially for the links to the products you mention! This video is saved in my favorites!
Looks awesome !!
I really appreciate the videos you've done. Been pretty fascinated with this bike. The suspension spring upgrades were much easier than I thought. Thanks again👍
I’m glad they have been helpful, it’s been fun working on them. Thank you for watching!
Picked mine up last week.2024 in Kawasaki green.Ill be doing the same mods as you.Suspension is on my list too.I have no intention of changing the exhaust for exactly the same reasons. If I have the need for speed I'll take out a bigger bore bike! Thanks for starting this video thread I'll be watching for more.
Congrats on the new bike! You’ll have a blast.
Thanks pal
Just wanted to say thanks again for the content. Picked up mine yesterday at the dealer. I'm 6'1 260lbs and it has plenty of power for my needs. I'm 39, been out of riding for a few years and super rusty. I plan on doing pretty much every mod you've talked about. I ordered the foot pegs through your link 👍
Congrats on the new bike! These things are so much fun 🤘
Good video. Informative and interesting. I hope to have a new KLX300 in a month or so. These are some of the same mods I’m looking at.
Thank you! You will have a blast on the KLX lots of fun adventuring.
I put the Tusk tires on my 300 CRF I really like them! The only thing is on a regular gravel road the front tire is a little squirrelly but in the mud and slick stuff they are great! We went to Moab Utah a couple of weeks ago and they performed great! My buddy has them on his KLX 300 and he was with me in Moab.
That is awesome to hear! I just ordered new tires but not the Tusk ones. Next time I need a set I’m gonna buy Tusk though to compare.
Thanks
Very good video. I'm like you, I like the stealthiness of a quiet exhaust. Not necessarily a stock exhaust, but a quite lighter exhaust.
good stuff brother
Thank you!
Love the videos! Great recommendations.
I’m just curious to see if you or anyone else has had a new klx 300r from brand new and noticed changes in performance around the 12-15 hour mark (more noticeable power in 3rd and 4th)
Or was it what changes I made…
1. I deleted the pair valve.
2. I trimmed the stock snorkel so it’s both shorter on the top of the air box and the bottom so it’s not blocking the air filter as much.
Nothing else was done and on my last ride the bikes power changed considerably… I’ve heard they do break in at some point when they are new and do get more power so maybe it’s that…. But my last ride was pulling different when I hit 3rd than all previous rides….. it was fun
I have the 300 R and have done a few of the same upgrades,I’m running the Tusk emex 35 soft terrain. My point the Tusk brand is a good solid choice
I welded a larger loop around the existing foot brake lever and works great
I did 65% bigger same shape boots find it easy
Just might or tig 3/4 inch 3/16 flat stock bend to shape and use grinder to cut traction grip
That’s a cool idea! Thank you
I am picking up my 2024 KLX300 on Friday. Been watching a lot of videos on modifications. I will go with Tusk hand guards because they give your hands more room. No need to cut down levers. Let me know where that trail is so I can meet you there and make fun of you in person.😂😂 Looks like a great place to ride. Seriously, great video. I plan on leaving the standard exhaust on. Everyone agrees on the footpegs.
Congrats! You will have lots of fun. All the trails I’m riding are around western NC. If you’re in NC you can definitely tag along to make fun of me 😂
Please post if you do find a quiet light weight exhaust.
I have a leovince x3 on my dr. Don't know if they make one for th3 klx but it has multiple inserts. It is not much louder than stock from the factory.
Are you happy with the stock seat?
Or do you think you’ll do something like Seat Concepts?
Good job with the material and video. I feel the need to send out some information that might save viewers from possible decapitation,,, head goes one way, torso keeps riding. Never go fast when it's your first time riding new area. Use caution and roll at speeds that are better for observing off the beaten path... Don't stop exploring. Its good for your health.
Thank you. Solid advice all around there.
I have a '22 KLX 300R, dirt only. It's my first bike and it's been great so far. IMS pegs are a must. I bent the handlebars as well on the first laydown. I am just starting to look at changing the gearing and was considering a 13 tooth front sprocket to give me a little more torque to pop the frontend up on the trails I ride. Did you replace the chain?
Great video! You should try deleting the secondary throttle plate for no other reason that it makes 6th gear way more usable with out having to shift to 5th on every single incline.,also better throttle response everywhere . I have pulled the spark plug a couple of times after doing it and if anything it is running a tiny bit rich after delete so no worries on fuelling.
I am looking the same suspension upgrades you did. You mentioned you are 6'6" if you don't mind me asking how much do you weigh and what is your feed back on the upgrade both on and off road? I am 6ft and 200 pound without gear and the 7kg spring is what the Race Tech is recommending as well. Thanks!
Very interesting, 6th gear can definitely be a struggle going up hill haha.
Yeah I’m 6’6” 280. Upgrading the springs made a huge difference for me. Off road I definitely feel like I have more control of the bike and I’m not so worried about bottoming out. It’s a lot more comfortable. On road feels fine, I think the main culprit for discomfort on road is the seat.
Thanks for the info and I agree on the seat probably going to do the Seat Concepts at some point. @@DerekDualSport
Hello, great video.
Really specific, love that.
After changing the front sprocket, what is your cruising speed on the highway?
I'm from Argentina, and sometimes I have to travel 150 miles on the highway until I reach a good spot.
I haven't decided yet between the KLX 300 or the DRZ 400
Thank you! After switching the front sprocket its cruises comfortably at 70 mph with a top speed around 75-76mph.
@@DerekDualSport thanks!
Do you have an opinion as to adding a protective plate to the engine next to shift lever? When I had a DR650 years ago that was considered close to mandatory, on both sides: shift lever and rear brake
I have taken this bike through some really rough terrain and rocks without an aftermarket skid plate and haven’t had any issues. But you can never go wrong with the ricochet skid plates. It’s like a “better safe than sorry” type thing. I will probably pick one up in the future.
Suspension & tires for better handling is probably the smartest upgrades you can do since control is key to staying alive on a
bike..... lol, I have no idea how soft the front end of this bike is but I think you did right. Do you know if ANY other forks or a
triple tree from a motor-cross version can be swapped out on this? I know like for the Honda 150L a man swapped the 150
enduro right onto his dual sport but I digress. I'm glad I'm here so I can research this deeper. peace
That’s a really cool thought. I never considered swapping forks with a MX bike. I’m going to look into it too 👍
@@DerekDualSport IF it's possible, please drop the info, I'm collecting it all just in case I want it !!
Any plans to update the front/rear turn signals and license plate holder to something more streamlined?
Have you seen TST industries fender eliminator and turn signals? I don’t think anything else out there competes. They have very detailed videos on how to install as well. It’s probably going to be one of the last things I do though.
That’s a nice set up!!!
I think I prefer the round fork tube mounted LED signals.
You can barely see them until they’re illuminated.
Will those handlebars work with the stock risers? I don’t necessarily want to raise the bars very much but I do want to swap bars so that I can install handguards soon.
Yes definitely will work on stock mounts without installing risers.
@@DerekDualSport thank you!!!
Iv been wondering if the OEM KLX300R exhaust will fit the dual sports. Its still quiet but a lot less restrictive.
It’s not an exact fit. I read once that you’d have to do some welding, thats a skill I never picked up haha.
@@DerekDualSport i think its just the rear bracket is 1" off, easy to mod that. I was wondering bout the 02 sensor
Ahhh this might be something good to look into.
I put the pro circuit t6 exhaust system for the 300r on my 300 works awesome
How much do you weight
Fulll agreement on the exhaust. I cant find any quiet enough, legal enough and spark arrestor. I want to be able to ride anywhere allowed.... and maybe a few places not allowed.
Haha that is exactly right!
You thinking about moving to a Seat Concept seat or a seat pad?
Oh man I don’t think so. That stock seat hurts on long rides for sure though haha. I’ve been thinking about ordering some bike shorts, those have extra padding to wear under my normal clothes.
what size MT21 do you plan to put on the front?
90/90-21 I have one ordered.
How much do you weigh?
Hey man, fellow KLX 300 owner here. What are your thoughts on adding a skid plate?
I gotta say my KLX has really taken a beating on some super rocky trails. The 24 KLX has a stock skid plate that’s been hanging on well. I think eventually I’m going to get the ricochet skid plate to play it safe.
@@DerekDualSport thanks, appreciate the info!
What part of NC are you at? We ride at brown mtn a lot and go to brushy in the offseason
The closest city to me is Winston Salem. I’m hoping to go up to brown mountain this season. I have not been yet.
@@DerekDualSportwe are in Lenoir, 20 min from brushy and about 40 min from brown. We’re going to brown next Saturday if you wanna join along
I’m not 100% sure if I can make it next Saturday. But if I can, I’d love that. I need someone to show me the good trails. What bikes does your crew ride?
@@DerekDualSportme and my buddy mostly ride on our wr250r’s but we will prob be on something a little lighter. But I’ve ridden all the trails there on my dual sport so a klx300 will have no problems
I like my klx the way it is thanks
Bozo
I wonder if u lost any top speed with the 14 tooth
A little bit for sure. It fights a little harder to stay in that 72-75mph range. It suits me pretty well though as I am always avoiding highways anyway.
Uh-chair-bees
I believe that is how Acerbis is supposed to be pronouned. Nice bike.
There it is. Thank you haha I will try to remember that.
Lol. For years I called it Ay-sir-bis. I already have a dr650, but after riding a lowered klx230 I realized there was something more pure about riding experience on the smaller bike. I greatly lacked the torque, but I was giggling like a little kid the whole time. I really like the 300. But I sat on a drz400 and really felt comfortable on it. I have a second 650 (honda) that I was given and do not like as much as the suzuki 650 for multiple reasons, so I think I will trade it in on the DRZ. Enjoyed your content, so I subbed. @@DerekDualSport
A search for "How to pronounce Acerbis" revealed it's uh-CHUR-buhs.
