Proud of you guys, you did well and probably pissed a lot of riders off with a tap on the horn as you blew by them. My KLX 300 has see a lot of terrain like that and never let me down.
I'm a shit rider on a CRF300l with a few mods. I absolutely love "my" bike it kicks ass. It's great to see someone with skill ride this bike and give it props for what it is.
I have an 06 KTM 450 exc, with a plate. Did Big Bear several times. Also, many other DS rides...all hard ways. My bike is very well maintained. Never rebuilt, never had the head off. 22k miles of often difficult terrain. I don't abuse it. Always looking to preserve my bike, but get the job done. Reliable as a stone axe. Like someone said..."90% rider, 10% bike." I am by no means, a great rider. 68 years old. But, I like to think I'm a wise rider. Take good care of your bike, and it will take care of you. Many don't take the care, and just replace. Silly!!!
I owned a CRF250L and went trail riding with guys on 450's a few times. In the open desert they were laughing at me, but when the riding got tighter and more technical, the linear power (or lack of) and lower seat height really paid off. Passing guys on a basic bike that costs $5000 is a lot of fun. Next year Honda Trail 125???
Just goes to show it's all about the rider. Time and time again you prove how capable and well rounded rider you are Trevor. And Kudos to you as well Tyler. And yes nothing wrong at all with those bikes. I'm proud of both of you young gentleman!!
I'm almost 60 and love to show up for rides on what is thought to be the wrong bike (old or to small or whatever) just to prove the point that most bikes are good enough. I brought a DRZ400 to a hard enduro ride and did great on it. I used to roll up to hard rides on a 86 husky WR400 and people thought I was crazy, they did not realize how good that bike was and is. FUN!!!
I was a one of the 2nd half HW sweep rider and saw you two come through check point 3. You were rockin'. Glad we didn't see you all afternoon. One year a group of Trail 70 riders did it.
I setup my DRz400 for hard use, because its the bike I currently have and I like the damn thing.. Good enduro tires, HD tubes, rim locks, protection parts, springs for my weight, lower gearing, IMS pegs and some weight reduction. The bike will do anything my buds do on their enduros and if I don't have to pick it up much, its somehow less taxing to ride. I will probably get another KTM 2stroke someday because of the lighter weight, but I'm in no hurry.
Thanks for showing how capable these bikes are. I know my KLX has never let me down I just wish I was a better rider but I will have to work on that. No regrets about buying it I don’t need an expensive bike to have fun.
Cracker vid! Rich Larsen did a review of essentially trial riding a KLX230, he absolutely crushed it on that little whip. I’m one of the idiots with a 450 😂😂 Mine is a ‘13 Husaberg I’ve had for about a year, it would have fit right in ten years ago!
Thanks for a great video fellas. 👍 Damn, you guys can ride! I'd have kept my KLX300 if I could get a larger capacity fuel tank. Acerbis, IMS, I'm not the only one saying this. Last year I got a deal on a 23' Husky FE 501 S and I've been kitting it out for a lightweight ADV bike, I'll never ride like you guys, I'm in my late 50's. So I've been thinking about going back to the 300cc level but I'd have to go with the CRF 300L or Rally to get that fuel range in the after market, even though I'd love to have another Kawasaki in my lineup. I might be talking myself into keeping the 501 here. 😉
I'm sure the aftermarket is very happy that people are modding bikes , plus, nice equipment is always satisfying to operate, even if you know you're not fully exploiting it.
I’ve taken my KLX250 places it shouldn’t be but it got me in and back out. They are very capable. Maybe not the best for hard stuff but if it’s what you got.
Bottom line is a good rider can make almost any bike look good and you boys can ride. What impressed me the most about the two bikes was the guys riding them
Good job guys, I’ve always had the thought process of 80% Rider 20% Bike. You guys definitely proved that in this video. Next time do it on the XT 250, that bike is so capable
I get that a lot on my drz400E. One guy with a WR450 on a ride we went on said I was going to slow everyone down, I just didn't say anything as I know what the bike is capable of. We ended up waiting at the end of the trails for him 😂 he was salty as after that. All that power is fun on the open trails, but in the technical stuff, it can get in the way if you don't know how to use it. Sure, the drz400E isn't hi-tech or a fast bike. The WR450 is the far superior bike in every aspect. But knowing what the bike is capable of and its limits and being able to overcome its weaknesses and utilise it strengths will make you the faster rider at the end of the day. The point is that it definitely comes down to the rider.
Delusion breaking productions. Were so into buying the latest and greatest, and the majority of us then make excuses not to ride. People would rather chase the idea, thaj the reality. Good stuff.
Both these bikes come with crap suspension, the Kawi just comes with adjustable crap suspension... for $500 more. Putting $700 into Ktech aftermarket suspension on the CRF makes it the superior machine in every way. Power, handling, gearbox, clutch, features, styling, aftermarket, resale...
Amen, let's get an "all else" class. Hell, guys are running Harleys with knobbies in a National H&H, so a wackier-the-better class for this? I'm all in.
How did you guys do on fuel...? I have the KLX300 and riding at my old guy, short shifting pace I get about 75 miles before the fuel light comes on...and you guys were ringing the necks out of these bikes. Nice job.
Not sure if ifs possible in California, but I took a klx300r model and made it street legal. I was able to get the weight down to a reasonable level and the bike is a blast.
You better off spending cash on riding more than adding do-dads. No harm in modding your bike, no harm in buying the best the the Euro's have to offer, but if you wanna be quick.....ride more.
It's kind of like racing on tracks with liter bikes and getting passed by 400cc's. It's skill based. Even in the firearm community which I'm more in tune with. Some kid with a $500 PSA build can and will be better than a guy with a $3000 DD build. It's all about training.
90% rider, 10% bike. People don't wanna hear that and they don't wanna build skills on the bike, they would rather good goodies for the bike and hope it makes up for the 25% skills 😂
I couldn't disagree more. I own the CRF 300L and it literally limited my skills DRASTICALLY out the gate. The second I swapped the suspension out, my confidence, the predictability and ABOVE ALL capability of the bike doubled. That's a lot more than 10% the bike. It literally couldn't do basic stuff in stock form.
@@phantomshtter I agree, I had a 250L and the suspension on that thing never gave me any confidence, once I spend some good money on suspension it was a different story, the second problem was the weight, 140kg on tight trails will get you tired especially when you make a mistake and you need to lift up that thing. It's not a bad bike but as a first dualsport it was a bit of a handful, unfortunately at that time the yamaha XT250 was never available were I live because I would preferred that one. Yes skills are very important, more than the bike but as most average Joe's you have to start from somewhere.
Sounds like that crap u hear from brake magazine.. take a multistrada 1250 up the hard route. Goooood luck bro. Sure pros and experts could do it, but the bike makes way more than a 10% difference.
So funny. Tell me you have 10% skills without telling me you have 10% skills.🤣 It's the bike, it the sun in my eyes, it's the tires, I didn't have my favorite grips. Spend money on gas and ride and ride and ride and build skills.
@@Randy_Cox i can tackle trails and sections on a klx300 i wouldnt dare do on a multistrada. Its true for most people btw. Some elite guys can ride anything anywhere, but those guys also dont give a crap about cliches or who said what, they know it doesnt apply to them.
I have a KLX, the lowly 250. Done the TAT and two BDRs, and the bike just eats up that terrain without a hiccup. Got to ride a section back-to-back on a Husky 350. Was the Husky "better?" Sure. Snappier, better suspension. Was it 2x better as reflected by the price tag? No way. These bikes are huge bang for the buck. Love the horn testing! ;-)
@DirtBikeTest me and my friend are doing the same with ours, 43mm showa USD forks and a 330mm rear shock. Put the seat height at around 34 inches and the ground clearance at a shocking 13". We also have a raptor 250 high compression and a hot cam (only cost us 170$) and a Let see what you guys come up with!
Always was, the Wr250r was the best, the Kawa a solid second and the Honda the worst, now that the Yamaha is out the KLX300 is basically almost the same at it was the 250 , still with better suspension, more narrow and feels more natural when standing on the pegs, and maybe still lighter than the Honda.
Proud of you guys, you did well and probably pissed a lot of riders off with a tap on the horn as you blew by them. My KLX 300 has see a lot of terrain like that and never let me down.
