    I really like the sound of those P90s. I noticed the guitar was almost inaudible when the tone was near or at zero. Other than that…I can’t believe I want one of these. Its styling is completely out of my character. But I’m just enamored. Great video.

  • @DMSProduktions

    Sounded great! Bridge to neck was WAY different in volumes! Definitely NEEDS the bridge p/up raised a few mm! Raising the pole screws will only make it brighter really. Lifting the whole COIL closer to the strings will also heft its low end response along with volume!
    BUT both sound really good! Nice to hear the neck p/up is not TOO dark!
    Seems a winner from HB! \m/

      Yeah, I really love this one too - it's 100% pure fun. But also, the pickup volume discrepancy would be an issue for anyone doing quick changes. I guess you're right and it'd have to be a shim. If HB do let me keep this guitar that'll need doing ASAP. Otherwise though, lovely, and so much more than I expected! And blue! Awesome 😉 I would say you should buy one but I bet with shipping it wouldn't be such a sweet deal as it is in Europe.

    I have a MR Modern and even if it's great, I have mixed opinions : the pickups squeal with high-gain, they have put 2 tone knobs (no volume knob...), the tone push-pull works half of the time and the trem throws the guitar out of tune as soon as you use it. I have decided I will put Di Marzio soapbar humbuckers and replace the volume and tone. also I have changed the trem springs to Gotoh psp, but it honestly doesn't make any difference, I also have set the trem to non-floating (dive-only).

    • @RichWordsMusic
      @RichWordsMusic  2 года назад +1

      Oh, interesting feedback! Shame they messed up the knobs on yours... I feel sure there should be one volume and one tone. Actually, HB sent me the modern baritone for a test and this one has the volume/tone knobs. The pickups seem OK on it, although I'm yet to fully throw loads of gain at it (I've never played a baritone before). I think your mods will make for a killer guitar. The non-floating trem is also something I'd probably do, as it's not something I'd really use. Aside from all that though, I do think these MR guitars are pretty sweet, and very different! I hope with the mods yours becomes one you truly love! Share some before/after shots or videos if you have them please :)

    Another sexy blue guitar on this channel, who woulda thought! In the Harley Benton MR-Classic MBL the P-90s do a standup job as you'd expect/hope (height notwithstanding). But is it just another P-90 guitar? It's good we have guitars that mix things up a bit look wise with so many of the usual clones around. The humbucker model has mini humbucker sized (Thomann call them soap bar size) pickups with coil tap, but I think full size humbuckers would be a good option for this look.

    • @RichWordsMusic
      @RichWordsMusic  2 года назад +1

      Big surprise, eh? ;) I can't help myself! And yes, the pickups in this guitar do sound great (the height this is fixable)... they've also sent me the Modern version as a baritone to try! So I am very interested to get going with that as I've never played a baritone for more than 30 seconds before. I do also feel a humbucker version of this guitar would appeal to many people... it's a different, quirky design and some people would want full-size humbuckers in it (P90s are unfortunately a step too far for some people!).

    There's something about P90 pickups that makes every guitar a blast to play. If you'll have the time, check out Eastwood's Sidejack guitars. Another Mosrite style guitar with insane value for the money. I had the baritone and it was a gem

      Oh yes, absolutely 😊 They are a special and underrated pickup for sure! So raw and full of energy. That's so funny actually... I've been looking for a baritone for ages now, and a Sidejack Baritone came up used near me recently. I missed it, but was hooked on the looks! And now Harley Benton has also sent me the MR-Modern baritone to try out as well, so I will do a video on that soon. I would love to try an Eastwood for real too, though - they look fantastic, and I would hope for even higher build quality than the HBs! Rock on!

    • @101Volts
      @101Volts Год назад

      Thing is, you can't buy a Harley Benton or an Eastwood and expect it to sound like a Mosrite. These have the looks down fine for the price point, but Mosrite pups are something else entirely. They're between Fender and Gibson, and they aren't P90s - they never were.

    • @brainrottedindividual
      @brainrottedindividual Год назад

      @@101Volts true, guess the closest thing you can get to the original nowadays is a hallmark. or try and find old mosrite pups. there's this dude who is infamous for buying all mosrite guitars and parts he could get his hands on, and he drip feeds this stuff back to the playing community for crazy prices. if i ever make dentist money, i would save up for the real deal.

    Excellent review! I have the "Modern" version. 70+ hours recording so far, can't be happier.
    of my 50 some guitars, collected, gigged and recorded over 55 years now, expensive too ultra low price,this rates in the top three. Split HB's, terrific specs and is wonderfully playable with many sound options, all are spot on.
    The best copy for a real Mosrite is Hallmark by Bob Shade a former builder for Semie Mosely.
    They run about $1000. USD.
    I'm always deflated to hear people only think of surf with this build style. Rubbish!!
    The Ventures recorded
    over 100 albums in a 62 year careers. 30 different genres including "Hawaii 50"!! Wonderful musicians. They played Mosrites for a couple of years, early. Four different genres of albums.
    These guitars have a great flowing design, ergonomics and balance. Any guitar with P90's at 25.5" scale are capable of near anything. This one is just made with better specs than any for the cost.
    Mosrite outsold Fender two years back in the day. Danos model is off in specs and is relatively expensive, all otheres are 5 times the price.
    You have it right. It's a beautiful guitar with terrific sounds and specs and the cost is better than anyone.
    Buy them, both models, play them with a Mustang amp. You'll be a happy camper....

    • @RichWordsMusic

      Thanks John! I'm very glad to hear you're enjoying yours too - I would also love to give the Modern version a try. With your experience, it's great to hear how impressed you are with this guitar though. Sort of helps me validate my opinion a bit! And yes, what a disservice to such a guitar to say it can only do surf music.
      I just checked out the Hallmark guitars and they look fantastic... like the 'real' thing for sure! I wonder if there's many of them here in Europe.
      I really need to check the Ventures out too now, as I wasn't hugely aware of them before. Over 100 albums? That's quite the career!
      Now I'm going back to the MR-Classic. It's a lot of fun, sounds and plays great, and just inspires me to pick it up every day. You can't ask for more than that with a guitar at any price!

    • @johnwelch557
      @johnwelch557 2 года назад +1

      @@RichWordsMusic I would "assume" there are many Hallmarks in Europe. I tried one here in Phoenix at a retailer, used on consignment. It played and sounded perfectly. I'm 72 now and have no reason to spend the $950.
      Bob's company keeps a low profile.
      The scale was 25.5" at about 9.5" radius.
      BTW, Mosrites are not P90's. The have deeper bobbins and super overwound. They were designed by Semi Moseley. Bob did the same with the Hallmark.
      No one else, except Fillmore in Japan does this. They have a drive sound like nothing else.
      I can't guarantee what you might have with Hallmark, but my demo example shook me of the table. 😳

    Damn, it's been a long time since I instantly got excited by a guitar. Used to love Johnny Ramone and his Mosrite, came close to buying an Eastwood Sidejack a few years ago but they were too expensive for me at the time. I was looking at semi-hollows but this one is too cool to miss. All the variations have something I like: I love baritones, never had a guitar with P90s or anything with a whammy bar. Looks like I need all three...
    Edit: the volume difference between the pickups should be easily fixable on the modern models with humbuckers, which seem to have height adjustment screws.

    • @RichWordsMusic
      @RichWordsMusic  2 года назад +1

      Yes, this could be your chance to finally try ordering a Harley Benton! I love the idea behind all three of these, too. I have the Modern baritone here as well, need to do a video of that soon (but it'll take a while to learn, as I've never had a baritone before!). The Modern models do have the improved specs, and I think the locking tuners should be really useful for the baritone.
      But yes, if you love Mosrites and/or Ramones, this one's worth a try! I was also looking out for an Eastwood for a long time, but never managed to find one at a decent price... and now HB comes out with this! Will still look out for Eastwoods whenever I get the chance, but the MR-Classic is loads of fun for now. Gof or it!
      Oh yes, and you're right about the humbuckers being adjustable for height. Sadly it's not so easy with the soapbar P90s :(

      Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! Hmm, I will see what I can do. The pickups on the MR-Classic are made by Artec, and in the SC Junior you has a Roswell pickup... so they will sound different! I guess overall the SC Junior has a fatter sound, but I am going to test that out and see :)

    Does anyone know how much shipping is to the U.S? I wanna save up for this but I want to include shipping into the budget, and the website doesn't say what shipping is.

    • @RichWordsMusic
      @RichWordsMusic  2 года назад +1

      Yeah, I'm actually not sure - does anyone else know? I saw on the site that if you're in the USA the way to find out shipping is to put the guitar in your basket then go to the checkout, and they calculate it there (I think you find out before you actually buy it). I remember in the past hearing it was about $80 in shipping to the USA for a guitar, but not sure if that is still valid.

      Hmm, Harley Benton actually doesn't say anywhere on their website, but they feel like medium to me. They're certainly not massive jumbo frets or anything like that!

    Hey, great reviews of these......did you hear a difference in low end between the modern and classic.. Thanks

    • @RichWordsMusic
      @RichWordsMusic  11 месяцев назад

      Thanks a lot! Well, the Modern I had was the baritone, and of course that sounded much fuller in the low-end, but overall I reckon the standard Modern guitar would sound a lot beefier too. In comparison, the Classic just has that amazing clarity and snarl from the P90s!

    Input jack on the front with a master volume and tone? What about drilling out a side jack and using the hole where the input used to be add another volume control? Could that help fix the volume issues (Is there even enough space?)?

      @@RichWordsMusic Captain Beefheart made real interesting music for sure, I also like the crazy 13th floor Elevators of that era, even the funny jug sound.
      I am tempted by this guitar as never see a Mosrite for sale in Ireland, let alone a lefty.
      I think this sounds more Ramones like than the more pricey Mr Modern, thanks for the video!

    That 160 dollars guitar sounds really good, but you are using a 2.000 dollar amp,so i can't get a hint of how that would sound in my hnds with a cheaper amp.

    • @RichWordsMusic
      @RichWordsMusic  10 месяцев назад

      I know what you mean, but the amp's not quite that expensive... currently about $990 in USA dollars. But yeah, I want to get a cheaper amp to demo cheaper guitars in future... maybe a Boss Katana or similar. This is a great guitar though, and I heartily recommend checking it out if you get the chance!
