Harley Benton /Thomann sent me their new Mosrite style guitar to check out AND IM GLAD THEY DID! because this sort of thing is just my style. Its not anywhere close to a direct clone of a Moserite style guitar, but it has the looks and a collection of modern features that make it a fun option for anyone looking for a surf/punk guitar on a budget.

I'd been looking for a mosrite-ish guitar for years, just falling short on a dozen Johnny Ramone models and standard Venture copies. The other guitarist in my band sent me a link to this on a Monday a few weeks ago and I was able to scoop up a b-stock in white of the modern and ordered it immediately. It was at my doorstep (Germany to Seattle) Thursday afternoon. By the next Saturday I was gigging with it. Stock, no set up (besides what the original owner and the shop may have done) no backup needed. All my other guitars are hot-rodded but this one is my number one now.

      What does b stock mean

    • @arno-luyendijk4798
      @arno-luyendijk4798 4 месяца назад +1

@@Deeznutseighthundredthirtyit means that the guitar in question has been returned to the sneller before, mostly duw to some esthetica failures (little piece of lacquer off, scratch, no more than those kinds of things) but apart from that, the guitar is still in perfect working order as a guitar right from the factory. For example, I have a Harley Benton budget bass that I bought B stock due to one piece of an edge having a bump in the lacquer finish... bought it 6 years ago and is still my perfect electric bass to go for recording..I think it would do good live too.

The bang-for-buck with this is just astonishing. Those pickups sound surprisingly good. Wilkinson bridges (and arms) kick ass. And the split makes this a perfect surf and punk rock guitar. A bit of a setup and you've go a pro quality guitar for stupid money.

You are right on the money my friend it's a pro guitar the pick ups sound fantastic, the neck is really nice, the locking tuners are sweet, the stainless frets polished like glass treated the ebony board it's mint the wilkinson bridge is great the illuminated side dots are nice it stays in tune big time trust me as far as the switch... well top pik switch up,bridge pick up switch down pretty simple, the body is fine if your over 4 ' 11"😅 I had a univox high flyer in 1973 when I was15 and i didnt think it was too big, this is similar body wise but way better than that! I got all kinds of guitars here and I'm playing this Mr. Modern a lot it's that good after a little set up I filed the nut slots to the correct depth and basic stuff and it's a bargain, get one my friend that's all 😊ps.this guy seems like a good guy but don't go by some of the sounds he's getting semi hacker the poor bastard

Okay here's some big points that were missed on this video. This is a slab body guitar with the dimensions of a semi-hollow body, 14in at its widest. So if you're not used to that, be aware. The toggle switch moves up and down instead of forward and backwards which is kind of awkward. I adjusted mine to wear now it works forwards and backwards. The pickguard looks very nice but the material it is made of is very soft, it scratches and dents very easily. The paint finish is immaculate. And overall it is a great guitar for the price

DAM! I am IMPRESSED with this guitar! WHAT the hell? Those pickups sound like the best combination of a single coil and humbucker! You sound better than ever on this Mosrite style. I think they somehow nailed this- I've been playing over 50 years and believe the SHAPE of a guitar (of course pups, wood, construct, et Al). BUT I have installed any number combo of body and pups and found this is why for instance, the tele (one of the first solid bodies) with not just the wood, but thickness and shape has a great influence on sound, the Mosrite is a THICK strat type shape and sound (to me) like a cross between strat and tele. I think I may have to get this guitar!

Your enthusiasm is infectious! I didn’t pay much attention to these when they were announced, but the look is growing on me - I’m not a fan of horns or Strat shapes, but this one’s kind of cartoony, like a guitar someone in a Hanna-Barbara toon might play. Plus IIRC Johnny Ramone played one? Now if only it came with P90s.

hell yeah, its like a cartoon of a strat, i think the extra round horn ends lends to that, but i didnt look twice even with the great specs, until i realized how many of my guitar heroes play Mosrites, and heard Ryan getting down on this one, it was a done deal. gonna get the BRian may also but the trrem is mostly unuseable from what i hear, thats why it woiuld be great if these HB trem models are routed to fender specs so the Floyd Rose Rail Tail would fit (dive only locking trem to fender specs, drop in for their 6 point)

@@fedayeentaqx9956 This guitar's a cheap semi-copy of a Mosrite Ventures model, which was literally based on a flipped over Stratocaster with some re-designing in the late 50s or early 60s. It wasn't released as a Ventures model until 1963, though.

Really a good idea from Thomann. And good idea to send to Ryan who made a nice demo.I dig that surf chops. My mother had a few Shadows singles. The fret and neck are not totally true to the original Mosrite, but they were a pain to play (i read that...) so it's probably a good move.
There is also Barytone versions, as said by Ryan. And also Lefty versions in both modern/classic and regular/Barytone variation. Thanks Harley-Benton to think of us poor lefties... That not always the thing among guitar Brands.
I consider to buy one for a while, i tend to go for the Classic but after this video i'm not that sure. The pickups of the modern are surprising, in a good way. They sounds quite P90ish, more than i would have suppose. I don't like the look of the Wilkinson vibrato, but as seen in the vid it's finally not that bad.

I got myself one a few weeks ago! Awesome, I'm playing it all day and enjoying every minute of it. Versatile punkish surfy guitar but since now I'm really into surf (discarding it for metal which is my usual forte) I decided to pick her up as a backup guitar for my Jazzmaster for surf gigs. Impressive finish, neck, tremolo, LOCKING TUNERS omg! It does the job excellently. If anything, I'd swap pickups for something with more punch when split into single? Also, the volume drop when split is considerable. When playing live and swapping the jazzy for this one will need a boost on volume, either on amp or pedal. The mex Jazzmaster player series coil split I have is way more bright and loud (but it's way harder to play and set up... and still its coils won't sound like the real surfy deal but hey they pass the test).
I love my HB mosrite-like overall. Easy to play, easy to work with, easy to mod. And perfectly pleasant to play right out of the box.If anything I dislike the pickup control position - if caried away going heavy on picking and using tremolo intensely you may (you will) switch the bridge pickup back to "non-surf" position every now and then. I'd place its motion neck-to-bridge rather than head-to-feet
Awesome guitar. AWESOME NECK! Needs a bit more presence in single coil split mode and a couple not-that-important details.
Thanks Ryan, keep on 60 cicloing it!

That guitar would go really well with my Danelectro “Hodad” bass - it’s black, but has a similar body shape. The “Hodad”, sadly, is no longer made… it’s a GREAT short-scale bass! This Harley Benton sounds terrific! GREAT HUMBUCKERS!! And the “splittable” pickup sounds killer in BOTH switch positions. If you’re into “dive bombing” with a whammy bar, this ax really does the job. And yes, there IS a very simple mod that can be done to lose the hum when you split the back pickup, and it’s really cheap to do. Overall, this is a great sounding guitar.

just got the blue one... a little bumpy on the fret ends, but not really noticeable when playing. very heavy this one is... be all of that as it may, it plays great! oh and with the headstock, it has a '24.5" vibe', but it measures out at 25.5"... ymmv

I have a MR Modern and even if it's great, I have mixed opinions : the pickups squeal with high-gain, they have put 2 tone knobs (no volume knob...), the tone push-pull works half of the time and the trem throws the guitar out of tune as soon as you use it. I have decided I will put Di Marzio soapbar humbuckers and replace the volume and tone. also I have changed the trem springs to Gotoh psp, but it honestly doesn't make any difference, I also have set the trem to non-floating (dive-only).

Mine came - and it's going back. It's a beautiful guitar (kind of heavy though, and the neck feels huge), and sounds great too. But the one I received (B-stock) won't allow for a proper setup. I suspect the neck needs to be shimmed (truss rod is already tightened as far as I'm willing to take it and the previous owner lowered the saddles pretty much as far as they'll go). Also, mine came with the wrong tools! Luckily Thomann has a no-questions-asked return policy.

Hey ... that packaging for the guitar looks a BILLION times better than what I got on any HB guitar I ever ordered. I approve! And I hope it's a trend, not just a fluke. I hate ordering from them only to have the guitar(s) bashed during shipping because of their chronically anemic packing methods.
