The best era for Chaka...I nearly tear up every time I hear that, "..me and the baby gonna miss ya" line...even 50 years ago when I first heard it. Rufus was a funk staple of mine!
One of the best singers of all time, with one of the best bands of all time, with a classic song from one of the best albums of all time ("Rufusized")! 🙂 Great live performance of this song!
So good, so smooth, so effortless. Everyone is having a ball. No autotune, no click track, no prerecorded music -- no need! This, folks, is real talent!
Chaka Khan was just a diamond back then (still is). I don't wanna say "underrated" but definitely "under-appreciated". Truly one of our Queens we must protect and respect I can see a direct root from cuts like this to stuff like Erykah Badu. Very similar vocal runs.
It was great to be a teen in the 70's. The bands were off the hook. There were just sooooo many folks making music back then. I saw Marvin Gaye and the Jackson's for $7.50 each at the Forum in 72. Unbelievable
Hollywood should have snatched her up. She has great screen presence. This performance was raw, gritty and purely organic. She was great. They should have hire backup singers. Not that the guys were bad. But her lead vocals were wayyyyy above the background vocals.
I first heard this tune in like 1976 or 77. The bass player and I (couple of white kids from Branson, MO) from our high school rock band must’ve dropped a needle on the record 60 times, but we finally figured the basic chord changes out. We were never able to get this feel though. 😊. Nothing but respect for Rufus and Chaka Khan - one of the truly great soul/funk ensembles of all time.
That is an album that I can *always* put on and play straight through and *never* want to skip any songs! One of the best albums of the '70s or *any* decade. Masterpiece!
