In the books Rue’s district comes together to get enough money to send Katniss bread after she cared for Rue. It was an unprecedented thing since the districts aren’t allowed to interact with each other. Alliances happen in the games but no one usually actually cares for each other. Katniss saw Rue as her little sister since they were the same age. It’s one of the first acts of rebellion that the districts take.
Adding onto this: the only reason katniss recognises that the bread is from 11 is because peeta is a baker and taught Katniss all about the breads from different districts! I loved this small detail
In the book Katniss nearly dies of dehydration before finding water, and she also distills the water before drinking. Her and Peetas injuries are also more severe. For example, after the explosion Katniss loses her hearing in her left ear, and she almost bleeds out from the wound Clove gives her. When the game makers announce the rule change, Cato and Clove are also from the same district and can win together. Hope to see your reaction to Catching Fire as well! Sincerely me (a huge nerd)
REALLY? They should have added this into the movie! I think it would have made it so much better to get the full details. And I would love to do Catching Fireee!
@@wwhnI know! I really wished they kept it in too! It makes the cruelty of the Games even more clear, and is done deliberately to show that the districts wouldn’t stand a chance against the Capitol in another war. Another thing they didn’t include, Peeta gets blood poisoning and he has to amputate his leg once they win to survive! Which is so important to understanding why Katniss thinks it’s necessary to get the medicine for Peeta in the arena. (I still really like the movie though and I’m glad you did too 😊🫶🏼)
@@wwhn yes! Someone else might’ve said but Peeta fully loses his leg because he’s that injured at the end of these games, which is upsetting that it’s left out because it’s supposed to impact him big in the next one. Yes, katniss loses her hearing in one ear but the captiol does manage to fix this after she wins
@@wwhn Also in the book the end of the games was way more dramatic. Katniss and Peeta actually had the berries in their mouth before they finally called for them to stop. They had to rush to the lake to try to wash the berries completely out of their mouth. At this point Peeta had lost lots of blood from the gash in his leg. He collapsed unconscious as they pulled him into the hovercraft with Katniss frantically screaming out for him while they worked on reviving him. I love the movie but I really wish they would have kept all of this ending in. It's one of the biggest things the movie got wrong IMO.
@@wwhnYES and imagine they somehow made the audio 3D audio, and after she loses her hearing in the left, the left sound (like through your headphones) because more quiet. That would have been really cool🥹
also glad you caught onto Cato's monologue i know it might seem easy to grasp but most people kinda chop it up to Cato just being crazy but you hit the nail on its head. you're supposed to feel bad for him in the end he too was just a kid who was used as a piece in their games even Katniss felt bad for him
Thresh and Cato actually DO go after each other in the books. It's an event you don't see anything of but it lasts DAYS, literally, and eventually Cato comes out on top. Guessing they cut it for drama and runtime reasons. Also the dogs are worse in the books and they had to tone it down for the movie, so I'm guessing Thresh dying to them was to establish how dangerous they are. Still sad Thresh vs. Cato didn't happen tho.
22:00 Yes, she would. She talks about it in the books. She said she’d make sure Rue won and got back to her family. Katniss’ only two options were: someone else kills rue, or she dies for rue to win. She said in the book a lot that Rue reminded her of Prim. She’d never be able to hurt rue. She loved her 💔
During the war, the capitol created a bird called the Jabberjay. They recorded conversations to keep tabs on the district. The districts found out and started sending false information. The capitol found out and sent them into the wild hoping they would die out except they didn't. They breeded with the mockingbird creating the "Mockingjay". The just mimic song instead of words. It's symbolic because it was something the capitol never meant to create. A slap in the face...a rebellion.
Katniss’s father died in a mining accident and her mother pretty much went catatonic. She just fell into a deep depression and with no one around to supply food for the family, Katniss learned how to hunt so she could keep her family alive. District 12 is seen as the poorest district and many have problems finding food which is why Gale for example has his name in 42 times. They can put their name in for extra food, so one name in for every time you need extra food. It’s to keep them suppressed. Katniss had to tell her mother that she couldn’t zone out again and needed to be there for Prim god forbid she didn’t survive the games. Hope this helps.
which I believe is also why Prim (who’s adorable, of course) says she wishes she looked like Katniss (and their father) instead of like their neglectful mother
@@kmjkmjkmj two things can be true at once. her neglect was a result of her depression. lets not act like allowing a 12 year old girl to become responsible for feeding and raising a family when she shouldn’t have to isn’t neglectful. katniss and prim were starving to death when peeta threw her the bread.
You actually were able to guess correctly quite a bit, im impressed! Some things I think are worth mentioning from the book: The bread that we briefly see in a flashback that is given to Katniss from Peeta is when they are both 11. Katniss’ dad died in a coal mining explosion and her mother had basically gone into a deep depression where she wasn’t saying or doing anything, and most importantly not providing for her two daughters. This led to Katniss being the main provider so that she and her family didn’t starve. Well, living in the poorest district and only being 11 (you can’t work in the mines until 18) Katniss struggled to get food. She got very desperate and even went through the bakers trash (Peeta’s family) trying to look for any scraps before Peeta’s mother came out and shooed her away. Katniss ended up collapsing from hunger and believed that she would die right there. She heard a lot of ruckus from the house and saw Peeta come out of the house with a hand imprint in his face and burnt bread in his hand. His mother told him to throw the burnt bread to the hogs before storming inside. When Peeta saw his mother was gone he threw the bread to Katniss, thus giving her the first food she had probably eaten in weeks! We later learn that Peeta purposefully burned the (actually very expensive bread that his family could barely afford) bread, knowing he would get a beating from his mother for it, just so Katniss wouldn’t starve. Furthermore, saving Katniss’ mother and Prim from starving. I think it lasted them a good couple weeks and Katniss remembers it fondly because it was the first time they had ever had such a luxury of good (even though burnt) bread. After that Katniss believed she owed Peeta for saving not only her life but her family’s. She was horrified hearing Peeta’s name at the reaping because she thought she would never be able to return the favor. Fast forward to when Clove nearly unalives Katniss: When Thresh slams Clove into the cornucopia, Katniss says that she can even see a dent in Cloves head. And when Clove was calling for Cato he actually answered. In Cloves last moments Cato cradled her in his arms begging her to stay with him. After Clove dies it’s clear that Cato has a decision to make. He can go after Katniss who is his greatest opponent with the highest score of 11. Or he can go after Thresh who was the one responsible for Cloves end. It’s this moment that really seals Cato’s loss because if he had chosen to go after Katniss he would’ve found (a very injured) Peeta and Katniss. But he chose to go after Thresh. Katniss describes the days in the cave as weirdly comforting because even though they are in an arena it’s the one thing she and Peeta have for shelter, it’s almost theirs. The movies seriously downplayed Peeta’s injury. While they were in the cave Peeta got close to dying many times and Katniss would shout at him to stay awake. Even after Peeta had the medicine he still wasn’t able to walk properly. Katniss is seriously worried about Peeta (not even for tv sake, she doesn’t want to lose him) She decides to go to the feast in hopes of getting Peeta his medicine despite Peeta’s refusal. But Peeta was also set on not letting Katniss risk her life for him, saying that he would crawl after her screaming her name (which would’ve gotten them both caught). Katniss knows he would so she agrees. Later, Haymitch sends Katniss a parachute with sleep syrup (specifically made in district 12). They actually didn’t send notes like they did in the movies but Katniss and Haymitch are so similar it was like she could read his mind even from the arena. So, Katniss collects some berries and adds the sleep syrup. She impatiently feeds it to Peeta (I believe it take three spoon fulls for the syrup to take affect) but Peeta actually catches on to the taste and realizes Katniss’ strategy. But by that point it was too late, even though he tried to throw up the food, Katniss had already gotten the last spoon full down his throat and he was knocked out. When Katniss gets back she only had enough time to apply the medicine to Peeta’s wound before she passed out from blood loss. Peeta says that when he woke up, he saw her passed out in her own blood. The last few days in the cave it was constantly dark outside (the game makers even made the days warmer and the nights colder to the point where Katniss and Peeta had to share a thermal sleeping bag). Katniss told Peeta that Thresh had spared her life and even said that if they had met back in district 12, Thresh would’ve been their friend. It’s in the cave through the pouring rain that Peeta sees Threshs face in the sky. They hadn’t been able to hear the canon over the rain. Thresh and Cato actually did have a face off. When Katniss and Peeta knew they had to go to the cornucopia (or the game makers would force them) they weren’t very far before they turned around and saw Cato running towards them shouting. Katniss and Peeta readied themselves thinking he was going to fight them but he actually ran right past them. That’s when they saw the mutant wolves (that were made to look like the dead tributes!) They ran to the cornucopia but Peeta fell behind because of his injury. Peeta was able to lift Katniss up where she saw Cato on his back panting heavily. When Katniss was trying to lift Peeta up she heard Cato pant out something but she couldn’t understand. Peeta translated for her, Cato was asking if they (the mutts) could climb it. I think this would’ve been really good to show in the movies because it really points out how terrified they all really were and that they were just kids. Catos death was horrifying, it lasted hours, all through the night while Katniss and Peeta were forced to listen. Katniss even stated she didn’t even care what he had done anymore she just wanted his suffering to end. Peeta nearly died several times through out the night. When it came time for Peeta and Katniss to take the berries they actually already had them past their lips by the time the game maker announced they were the winners. (They spit them out quickly and rushed over to the lake to wash their mouths) When they got on to the airplane thing medics rushed towards Peeta to attend to his injury. But, Katniss (who was deeply traumatized ofc) could only see them as Mutts and attacked them to try and keep them away from Peeta. She was eventually forced behind some glass where she banged and shouted at them. When they got back to the Capital it was actually a couple of days before Katniss could see Peeta. And when they were talking with Caeser was when she learned that PEETA LOST HIS LEG AND NOW HAD A PROSTHETIC! Sorry, that was a lot.
Wow I usually don't read really long comments but this was so informative. I only read the first hunger games books and it was a long time ago so I don't remember all these details. Thanks for taking the time to post this.
27:30 in the books Thresh and Cato did have a fight, supposedly for 3 days in the rain, Cato attempting to get revenge on thresh for killing his district partner clove, who he actually cares about in the books, and Thresh still tying to get revenge for Rue. Cato wins, steals his stuff but is injured in the process.
The books gives so many details that help explain things. This is especially true of the relationship between Katniss and Peeta. On Peeta's end it was all real and everything he did was to keep her alive. For Katniss it was more complicated. While she was certainly acting in parts as time went on she became more conflicted and began to feel something real for him. The movie does not do a good job at showing this. To give you a better glimpse of her thoughts towards him here is a few quotes from the book... "The idea of actually losing Peeta hits me again and I realize how much I don’t want him to die. And it’s not about the sponsors. ...It’s him. I do not want to lose the boy with the bread." "This is the first kiss where I actually feel a stirring inside my chest. Warm and curious. This is the first kiss that makes me want another." "Since my father died no one else’s arms have made me feel this safe.” "I pull the sleeping bag up to his chin and kiss his forehead, not for the audience, but for me.” "I take his hand, holding on tightly, preparing for the cameras, and dreading the moment when I will finally have to let go.”
24:17 you answered your question a minute prior. it is not unusual or unexpected for young and innocent people to die - the districts have become numb to it. katniss' selfless care and love is what made the difference, and reminded people that the tributes are real humans with full lives
"I wouldn't be Primrose. Honestly? Who's Primrose?"💅 Ooooh Gaaawd! This line took me completely off guard and I cackled for the longest time. I'm using that the next time I'm asked to do something I don't wanna do 😂
the 'I was dead anyway' line from Cato was more a reflection on the fact that he was essentially groomed from a young age to train to volunteer in the game;, his district making it seem like a prideful thing to do. when he's about to die he says that because he finally realises that the capitol never wanted him to win, they just wanted a show.
In the books, the mutts were much more intimidating. They made them more dog like in the movie, but in the book, they used the DNA of the fallen tributes and were more of a mixture of wolf and human, to the point they could recognize the eyes of the tributes in the mutts. In terms of the mother and how Katniss talks to her, her father died in a mining accident and her mother ended up losing her mind and mentally checking out for awhile. Katniss had to take care of both her mother and Prim. So Katniss telling her to keep it together was warranted, as she is telling her that no matter what happens to her, her mother needs to be strong for Prim this time, and be a mother instead of having her child having to take care of her
Katniss feels something for Peeta she just doesn't know what yet. Just think Katniss was raised to basically survive and provide for her family to keep them from starving. She feels in debt to Peeta because he threw her the bread when they were almost starving to death after her dad died. He gave her hope. Peeta really did like her he just exaggerated it for the sake of the show
1:02 the man with the beard is "gamemaker" hes the one who set up some of the hunger games (for three years i think..), the scream of terror from Primrose is his "personal signature" because he enjoys the fright and terror of children. Hence why he takes such pride and enjoyments setting up the games.
This is one book to movie adaptation that was done really well just because of the weaknesses of the medium. The book explains so much that just couldn't get put into a movie. It's a read that would enhance the enjoyment of the movie, as opposed to pit the two against one another. Definitely recommended!
That "lets just wait her out, she'll have to come down or starve" from Peta was him trying to give her a chance. He knew if he got them to wait that even if she eventually had to come down she would probably do it when they fell asleep
Also they played up that whole love triangle thing in the movies in a way that it really isn't in the books. If you're really paying attention in the books, you can tell where she's going with it from the start, but in the movies they tried to make it more like that is even an important story, considering everything else these stories talk about.
The reason Katniss misses the first shot in her session with the gamemakers is because she didn’t practice with the bows in the training center until that point. it’s not mentioned in the movies, but the bow she has at home was handcrafted by her dad before he died and it would definitely be very different from the bows in the Capitol.
Cato is a career. So in the wealthier districts they love the games. They have academy’s that teach them how to kill and they truly believe being in the games and winning is a honor. So when he said he was dead all along I think he met he spent so much time wanting this and romanticizing murder. Anyway love the vid. I make similar content and I like your take on the reaction video trope.
I don´t know if it has been explained, but in the books, Katniss explains the "three finger salute" the others do when she volunteers as "It is an old and rarely used gesture of our district, occasionally seen at funerals. It means thanks, it means admiration, it means good-bye to someone you love." I love the books and the movies and I love your reaction to this one! hope to see the other three films here too :D
The books explain so much, but this is still one of my fave book adaptations & your commentary made it that much better !! I need Catching Fire next 🙏🔥 Katniss’ father actually taught her how to hunt, swim and practically survive. Also, Katniss does start to feel something for Peeta in this movie, especially when they kiss for the first time in the cave, she just doesn’t know how to feel because she’s been on survival mode for too long. Sis is confused but their love story is everything 🤣
Thank you all for your comments and kind words as it means so much🥺😭 Catching fire reaction is finally hereeeeeeeeeeee ruclips.net/video/W4BJPUX8f58/видео.html
I love your reaction!!!! i wanted to answer your questions, as someone who read the books in high school! - The Reason the Capitol Citizens dress the way they do is because they are a very wealthy, self absorbed people and the way they dress is a symbol of that. - Also, the citizens of the capitol are totally oblivious to what is actually going on in the arena, they are aware that kids are dying, but for them it's a specticle, something as big as Sporting events are today and something they've become totally desensitized to over the years. It's an Annual thing like the Olympic's are. - The reason Haymitch is so uninterested in helping Katinss and Peeta out initually because he's been mentoring tributes for YEARS now, hewas the last victor of District 12 and year after year he mentors kids only to watch them die in the end. He is very cold to them to protect himself from further heartbreak - The Career tributes ( Clove, Cato, Marvel and Glimmer) are all so into it because they have all been brainwashed to believe that it's an honor to be in the games, their districts are the ones with the most volunteers because of it. 1,2 and I believe 4 if I remember right, all have special academies to train there tributes since they are the most loyal to the Capitol. Usually the ones to win the Hunger games are one of the Career's - Katniss does care for Peeta once they team back up, but she does play into the whole Star crossed lovers thing to survive, it's 100% real for Peeta though, he really does love her. -The Arena's are 100% created by the Capitol and controlled by the GameMaker and his team, so they can make tree's fall, swarms of bugs appears, entire area's carch on fire, they can do whatever they want to make the games more "entertaining".
In the books, the upper districts actually fight to get into the game. The reaping could take hours because everyone kept volunteering for each other. They train from birth to be in the games.
In the books, Cato and Thresh do go hand to hand and that's how Cato ends up injured even though we don't really see it happen. The dogs come after Thresh dies.
EVERY. TIME. You were like, "Wait, does she like him? Is this real? Or wait, oh, it IS real?!?!" I literally was like, "Uh, yeah. Exactly. Called it." Lol lol 😂😂😂😂 please continue this with the remaining movies, it's a RIDE!
It really sucks that the screenplay wasn't able to translate that clearly from the book. I cringe everytime I watch someone react to the movie because in the book, it's clear how Katniss feels about Peeta from when she talks about the bread scene. After that, I knew Peeta signed up with the careers to protect her because her instincts wouldn't be so wrong on him.
27:15 ik this video is a year old, but in the book, thresh and cato do fight it out. they run off together after the feast, and it's implied that they spend literal _days_ chasing each other and fighting, in pouring rain btw, before cato eventually comes out on top. also, when katniss finds out thresh is dead, she has a moment where the emotional exhaustion of the whole thing really catches up with her and she almost starts crying. but she has to pick her words carefully when explaining this to peeta, because the cameras are on, so she can't just say that she _liked_ thresh and she didn't want him to die, which is the truth. it's a nice moment and gives his death some gravity, because his sparing her leaves her feeling a sort of kinship with him, and at the end of the day, he didn't deserve this any more than rue did. if it wasn't her and peeta, she wanted it to be thresh. i think it's a much better death for his character, but i guess they cut it for runtime.
In the book, it specifies that the reason for the bread flashbacks was because it made Katniss feel guilty, she never got a chance to say thank you and she always felt like she owed him, when she got sent to be in the hunger games with peeta, she still thought she was in some sort of debt to him which is not great when she's going in to kill him :) hope this helps
(In the books Peeta’s wounds are way worse, and they spend a couple of weeks in that cave together… bonding, keeping eachother warm and safe… While Katniss is maybe not fully in love by the time they move on, she does have real feelings for him by the end. Which for her is very confusing and conflicting… she swims in denial about her true feelings for a little while because she has no idea what it all means given the circumstances..)
4:44 To be honest most parents try not to get attached to their kids+Katniss and Prim's mom isn't the best mentally after husband died which is also why she didn't have much of a reaction when Prim's name was called
Katniss isn't in love with peeta at this point. I think she cares about him, but is not like in love with him here. She knows in order to get sponsers and have the audience root for her, it's more likely she'll survive. So, she gives them an entertaining love story. I havent read the book in a long time so i dont remember, but when she hears there can be two survivors of the same district that seems to just set the plan further in motion, and she is helping Peeta survive too. Thats why it seems kind of forced and sudden.
Yes definitely! Peeta was playing this angle the entire time and katniss doesn’t realise until she watched the recap of the games in an interview later and realised how much he did to get attention on her and help with the audience rooting for her, Peeta’s actions helped with the decision to announce 2 victors can win at once so that’s when katniss starts playing that part. Peeta is genuine but he was putting it on a bit because he wanted katniss to win and the only reason he was so injured was because he saved Katniss life by attacking Cato 1 on 1 but they were both affected by the tracker jacked venom as well. I think the peeta and katniss scenes feel even more forced because the way the movies did them was really strange, they took out most bonding moments between them and the cave scene was a lot longer and they had a lot of genuine moments and I think the movie taking out most of Peeta’s personality doesn’t help, because most of the time even while dying he’s throwing so many witty one liners and comments that have katniss laughing. Katniss genuinely doesn’t want Peeta to die and goes completely feral after they win and Peeta faints from blood loss and starts banging on the glass in the airship to get to him when his heart keeps stopping. So katniss is very confused with how she feels in the end because when she tells Peeta that it was an act, she says not all of it was and genuinely is terrified of letting go of his hand for the last time at the end. I do love these movies and they do a great job overall but I think the movies really messed up their chemistry at points
21:57 hey!!! Katniss actually thinks about this in the books and while she didn’t want to imagine rue and her as the last alive, she kinda hinted that because she sees rue so similarly to her beloved little sister, she couldn’t possibly have the heart to kill her in cold blood.
I've said this in the past, but it's always true: Donald Sutherland plays a really good villain in President Snow. It's kind of the same Paradox with Imelda Staunton/Dolores Umbridge from Harry Potter: a delightful actor playing such a vile, despicable character.
These movies do a good job to trying to translate everything from the books over, but some stuff does generally get missed. In the Trial, when Katniss missed the target dummy, It is pretty confusing because, oh, she is supposed to be so good at it why did she miss like that. Well, nerves counts for one thing, BUT I think she has also always had to account for wind when hunting in the wild, and shooting in a closed space would throw someone off.
Out of all the book adaptions that exist, The Hunger Games is one of the best executed. So many authors just agree to let others take over the movies and they get ruined because everyone in the process would rather make money off the name than write a good movie. Suzanne Collins was not gonna have ANY of that nonsense with The Hunger Games. She was heavily involved with the adaption to make sure it didn't get fucked up. Also, Catching Fire is one of the few sequels that is BETTER than the original movie, and the Mockingjay films wrap up the story beautifully! You will not regret watching them!
actually in the book cato and thresh do go head on and cato ends up killing thresh but in the movies they make it seem like it was the mutts that killed him
Yeah, I don’t get why they did that because it feels more like an anticlimactic death for thresh to me, either way we never see him die but having Cato go after him and them proper fighting and then thresh gets killed rather than by mutts just seems better
@@clover2739 i kinda just have it head cannon that thresh died by cato in the movie i just like to imagine they were fighting when the mutt got released and that's when we hear the screams
Found you through your vampire diaries reactions and you are currently my fav reactor, now I’m tryna see how to fit your patreon into my budget I need those full lengths! Ty
If you are a reader I highly reccomend reading the books even if you watch all the movies. The books are well written and absolutely transport you into the world. There are also extra details in the books. I read through them so fast.
It feel like he liking her came out the blue because in the books from her perspective it did actually come out of nowhere. She had a hard time believing he really does like her.
28:28 actually he is saying he has suffered and felt what the games did to him so much that he feels like he is dead inside. He realized he wasn't living and that wasn't real life
Those big scary dogs are called muttations, and in the books, the capitol made them have the dead tributes faces. That includes Rue😭 Truly shows how sick the capitol is.
Immediate like and subscribe! You're one of the few reactors I've watched that puts such articulate and meaningful thought into the things you watch, and it's such a nice change from the usual reactors that I see. Thank you for putting out such thoughtful reactions! (I would love to see more of your reactions to the Hunger Games movies. I definitely recommend reading the books after, but the movies are masterpieces and I loved listening to your thoughts on this first one.)
you don’t really see it with the movies due to them having to cut things out but peeta liked katniss from a young age and katniss remembered peeta’s kindess with the bread (it was a super hard time in the district and peeta gotta beat by his mum for doing it, so katniss really appreciated his kindness in her time of need), and in reality they were in the game arena for weeks, they were mostly doing the love thing as “strategy” even though peeta already liked katniss, but after spending days together they began to build a real connection - also haymitch’s story is so sad the reason he’s so blunt at the start is because it had been 24 years since he won his game, and he’d watched about that many of his mentee’s die since then, which is why he also had no hope for katniss and peeta because seeing kids die year after year and knowing he couldn’t do anything about it - also his entire family was killed too, gonna take a toll😭
the books are also so much more brutal it’s crazy, cato’s death in the book was actually super sad he was getting eaten by those dogs all night until katniss finally got a clear shot and was able to end his misery, i think it’s easy to forget that they’re all only kids and how scary and horrible it must’ve been for them😭
You also have to think Katniss is only sixteen when the first book starts, so she is a young teenage girl. Her emotions are all over the place to begin with, and then add the games and everything else on top of that I couldn't even imagine.😢
Just stumbled upon your channel through this reaction and I already love it 😂. You picked up on a lot of the emotional nuances I think are easy to miss on a casual watch
The thing with Peeta and Katniss, and how Katniss feels is... murky, even in the book, but they go into her thinking on it more in the books. Basically, the Games mean that she can't trust that Peeta is telling the truth about how he feels, because it could just be a play for the cameras, but at the same time, she can't really *allow* herself to have feelings for him, because again, the Games have them as enemies, at least up until the Two Victors rule is put out there. She's also essentially had this relationship forced on her by the Games, and to an extent, Peeta himself. Granted, he did it to give her the best chance of survival, but still. Then there's the Games itself, so she isn't exactly getting any sort of time to consider her feelings. Pretty much any time she DOES get time for that, something happens, either by accident, or by design the of the Game Masters.
I'm late with this, but Peeta never genuinely joined with the careers, he was pretending and protecting Katniss the whole time. It's clearer in the books 👍😁
The movies are stressful but the books are less teen romance and more psychological horror. But just to clarify in case no one else has; no they’re not allowed weapons, Katniss’ father made their bows to hunt for food. Katniss is not very social with her district but she is well known for bringing in meat even by the peacekeepers who are essentially military police. This is why Peeta said his mom believed Katniss would win - made extra hard on Peeta when you remember his mother actually really didn’t like Katniss. You’ll see attendants in the background of some of the scenes in the district 12 suite. One of those attendants in an Avox that had been running from the Capitol and Katniss happened to be in the woods and witnessed her attempted escape with another person. It’s part of the reason she shuts Gale down when he suggests running away, because she’d witnessed the girl get captured and her partner was speared. The dogs were significantly more fucked up, having the eyes of the dead tributes and hair color for fur - this included Rue and Glimmer, rue being an obvious reason as to why it’s messy but Katniss saw Glimmer as her first kill. They were stranded on top of the cornucopia for hours, the gash one of the wolves left on Peeta and their eventual stranding is why Peeta eventually loses his leg (they cut it from the film which sucks cause for the rest of the movies they nerf his established physical capabilities which would only make sense if he had been adjusting to a prosthetic. Katniss also loses her hearing in one ear but by the time the games are finished the capitol repairs the damage in some way so aside from her occasionally clicking her fingers beside her ear to check it doesn’t come up again.
20:07 rue is most likely still alive because the careers are going after people with higher scores cuz they pose more of a threat. I think rue got a 7? I don’t remember, but there are more tributes with higher score so they go after them, like Katniss. She got an 11 (the highest score if all the tributes that year) so they go after her to make sure she doesn’t kill them, then they go after the lower scored tributes, like rue
when they pierce you with a spear in the chest, it doesn't matter if you pull it out, leave it in the wound, or push it further in. you're already dead.
the first movie is more just about katniss trying to survive than a love story. she clearly cares for Peeta and he loves her, but she never truly sees a reality until later on (not giving any spoilers)
The love story is stronger and more explained in the books. How she loves and thinks of gale as family and not in that way and how she trys to push her feelings for peeta down. Its more ambiguous in the films to sell the triangle story.
In the books katness is adimate that she doesn't like him, but even before the games if he was around she was watching him and aware of where he was. She's just extremely guarded
These movies are decent but the books are amazing. They are all about PTSD and trauma and what people have to deal with if they've been forced into war when they are too young, and how war is used for propaganda, and victims of class warfare, and how systems can be created so that people are poor who don't need to be poor because someone else wants to be rich, and where we might be going with reality television, and all of this stuff. Like for instance, at the end when Cato says it doesn't matter if he dies, it's because he has spent his whole life training for this, he's like the guy who always intended to go into the military and is all gung-ho and about glory and country, but once he's there he realizes that it's all to make someone else rich, and that he isn't going to get any glory out of this, he's just a murderer. So he's having a huge crisis of identity, and he realizes for the first time in his life that he's just being used just like everybody else. Meanwhile the kids from the poor districts are basically just like the kids who end up selling themselves to the military because they don't have any other way out. It's all a pretty big metaphor, and it's such a well done one that by the end of the third book, and the way they handle trauma in those books, therapists actually encourage people who are families of soldiers to read the books because it'll help them to understand what soldiers go through when they come home and try to go back to their normal lives. What soldiers go through when they're being forced to go back out for another tour after all the trauma that they've dealt with and have already tried to go back to their normal lives. The series of books is really brilliant and the movies are doing their best of course as well to portray that trauma and PTSD, but there's only so much you can do in a movie.
Idk if you'll see this, but the reason the deer is harder to hunt than the bird, is that the deer needs to be shot in certain areas of it's body to bring down otherwise it runs away injured, then you have to track it or it just gets away. A bird you can hit almost anywhere and take it down.
Boy you have to read the books, there is a part where they go to all the districts on their way back and Katniss speaks briefly with Rue's family, is so heartbreaking...
Man I read the books and hardly remember any of these details lol
Adding onto this: the only reason katniss recognises that the bread is from 11 is because peeta is a baker and taught Katniss all about the breads from different districts! I loved this small detail
They filmed this part! You can see it in the deleted scenes videos on RUclips. She gets the bread with the 11 on it
Exactly, in fact there is an deleite scene of that moment, when Katniss received the bread.
There’s deleted scene where she did get the bread which they should’ve kept in
In the book Katniss nearly dies of dehydration before finding water, and she also distills the water before drinking.
That would have been really cool🥹
also glad you caught onto Cato's monologue i know it might seem easy to grasp but most people kinda chop it up to Cato just being crazy but you hit the nail on its head. you're supposed to feel bad for him in the end he too was just a kid who was used as a piece in their games even Katniss felt bad for him
You referring to Peeta as “Peter” throughout the whole movie had me cracking the F up! So, thank you for that! lol.
"her outfit is giving poverty“ this shouldn‘t make me laugh this hard😭😭😭
Yessss we need the Catching Fire reaction!!!
Listennnn, the people want it so I think ima have to do it lol
Yes please.
👏
We needed it like yesterdayyyyyy
A slap in the face...a rebellion.
copied for google lol
@@RED-my9hl the book actually lol
@@sav9373 thank you. It’s been years since I’ve read the books. That’s like one of the few moments that stood out to me.
Some things I think are worth mentioning from the book:
The bread that we briefly see in a flashback that is given to Katniss from Peeta is when they are both 11.
Fast forward to when Clove nearly unalives Katniss:
When Thresh slams Clove into the cornucopia, Katniss says that she can even see a dent in Cloves head.
That’s when they saw the mutant wolves (that were made to look like the dead tributes!)
They ran to the cornucopia but Peeta fell behind because of his injury.
(They spit them out quickly and rushed over to the lake to wash their mouths)
When they got on to the airplane thing medics rushed towards Peeta to attend to his injury.
This comment is so underrated oh my gosh. Instantly rushing to read the books asap, that's so much more detailed than the movies
I do not want to lose the boy with the bread."
"This is the first kiss where I actually feel a stirring inside my chest. Warm and curious.
This is the first kiss that makes me want another."
"Since my father died no one else’s arms have made me feel this safe.”
"I pull the sleeping bag up to his chin and kiss his forehead, not for the audience, but for me.”
"I take his hand, holding on tightly, preparing for the cameras, and dreading the moment when I will finally have to let go.”
24:17 you answered your question a minute prior. it is not unusual or unexpected for young and innocent people to die - the districts have become numb to it. katniss' selfless care and love is what made the difference, and reminded people that the tributes are real humans with full lives
"I wouldn't be Primrose. Honestly? Who's Primrose?"💅
Ooooh Gaaawd! This line took me completely off guard and I cackled for the longest time. I'm using that the next time I'm asked to do something I don't wanna do 😂
Saaame that was so funny hhahaahha
the 'I was dead anyway' line from Cato was more a reflection on the fact that he was essentially groomed from a young age to train to volunteer in the game;, his district making it seem like a prideful thing to do. when he's about to die he says that because he finally realises that the capitol never wanted him to win, they just wanted a show.
But I also think cuz his girl got killed too
" are they poor?" idk why but this made me laugh. the books emphasize it a lot so your shock is funny bc its ur first time seeing this
" its like the holocaust" yeah and no music..exactly. its sooo well done. i love this film
YES youd be mesmerized cus theyve NEVER seen anything like this except on TV
this is so entertaining i hope this comment chain brings engagement to this page i am so happy rn
wait you hard-r'd peeta mellark haha
THE BERRIES IN THE BOWL WERENT IN THE BOOK AND THE THEATRES YELLED DURING THAT REVEAL
I understand haymitch because like he may have tried at first but he they didn't survive he doesn't want to feel that hurt again
Can't believe you hadn't watched this, it's so good. But the books are still better and everything is more detailed.
Yes, I never really was interested. Twilight was always my thing lol and yes I hear the books areee.
I don´t know if it has been explained, but in the books, Katniss explains the "three finger salute" the others do when she volunteers as "It is an old and rarely used gesture of our district, occasionally seen at funerals. It means thanks, it means admiration, it means good-bye to someone you love."
I love the books and the movies and I love your reaction to this one! hope to see the other three films here too :D
The books explain so much, but this is still one of my fave book adaptations & your commentary made it that much better !! I need Catching Fire next 🙏🔥
Katniss’ father actually taught her how to hunt, swim and practically survive. Also, Katniss does start to feel something for Peeta in this movie, especially when they kiss for the first time in the cave, she just doesn’t know how to feel because she’s been on survival mode for too long. Sis is confused but their love story is everything 🤣
Oh PERIODDDDDD you're gonna love this series !
Listennnnn I think so toooo lol Just up my ally lol
He is very cold to them to protect himself from further heartbreak
- The Career tributes ( Clove, Cato, Marvel and Glimmer) are all so into it because they have all been brainwashed to believe that it's an honor to be in the games, their districts are the ones with the most volunteers because of it. 1,2 and I believe 4 if I remember right, all have special academies to train there tributes since they are the most loyal to the Capitol. Usually the ones to win the Hunger games are one of the Career's
- Katniss does care for Peeta once they team back up, but she does play into the whole Star crossed lovers thing to survive, it's 100% real for Peeta though, he really does love her.
“petER” is sending me bro
EVERY.
That scene with Rue dying gets me every single time, I even cried now watching your video.
Fun fact: in the books, after the games peeta’s leg is so damaged that he has to amputate it and had a fake leg the rest of the book series
Actually the author didnt want a love triangle , but the editor pushed for it and she didnt have a choice.
Loved what you said about Rue and her parents seeing someone making the effort and bury their child in that way. Never thought of that before.
“Her outfit is giving like… poverty.” 😂 I’m already tickled and we’re just getting started lol
Well, nerves counts for one thing, BUT I think she has also always had to account for wind when hunting in the wild, and shooting in a closed space would throw someone off.
catching fire plsss this was so good
I would looove to do it. This one was a lot of fun lol
You will not regret watching them!
thanks so much for recognising that scene transition from seneca crane to prim screaming. i absolutely adore the way they set that up!!
actually in the book cato and thresh do go head on and cato ends up killing thresh but in the movies they make it seem like it was the mutts that killed him
Yeah, I don’t get why they did that because it feels more like an anticlimactic death for thresh to me, either way we never see him die but having Cato go after him and them proper fighting and then thresh gets killed rather than by mutts just seems better
@@clover2739 i kinda just have it head cannon that thresh died by cato in the movie i just like to imagine they were fighting when the mutt got released and that's when we hear the screams
24:07 “oop i didn’t expect for that to get me” imagine being 11 watching/reading this when it first came out, i was a messsss
Found you through your vampire diaries reactions and you are currently my fav reactor, now I’m tryna see how to fit your patreon into my budget I need those full lengths! Ty
29:15 Just because they won doesn’t mean the Capital can’t do anything to hurt Katniss and Peeta. You’ll learn more about that in the next few movies.
I just found your channel and absolutely love it! Keep them coming ❤
Thank you so muuuuch and welcome 😭❤️
U gotta do the rest of the series
If you are a reader I highly reccomend reading the books even if you watch all the movies. The books are well written and absolutely transport you into the world. There are also extra details in the books. I read through them so fast.
16:55 - from memory, the bag contains a futuristic water-purifying substance that, when dissolved in water, makes it drinkable... i think
That includes Rue😭 Truly shows how sick the capitol is.
they can still hurt them even when they arent in the hunger games 'you can be out of the arena but you can never be out of the games'
I definitely recommend reading the books after, but the movies are masterpieces and I loved listening to your thoughts on this first one.)
throughout the whole movie you didn’t realize they are all saying peeta and not peter?
you don’t really see it with the movies due to them having to cut things out but peeta liked katniss from a young age and katniss remembered peeta’s kindess with the bread (it was a super hard time in the district and peeta gotta beat by his mum for doing it, so katniss really appreciated his kindness in her time of need), and in reality they were in the game arena for weeks, they were mostly doing the love thing as “strategy” even though peeta already liked katniss, but after spending days together they began to build a real connection - also haymitch’s story is so sad the reason he’s so blunt at the start is because it had been 24 years since he won his game, and he’d watched about that many of his mentee’s die since then, which is why he also had no hope for katniss and peeta because seeing kids die year after year and knowing he couldn’t do anything about it - also his entire family was killed too, gonna take a toll😭
the books are also so much more brutal it’s crazy, cato’s death in the book was actually super sad he was getting eaten by those dogs all night until katniss finally got a clear shot and was able to end his misery, i think it’s easy to forget that they’re all only kids and how scary and horrible it must’ve been for them😭
You also have to think Katniss is only sixteen when the first book starts, so she is a young teenage girl. Her emotions are all over the place to begin with, and then add the games and everything else on top of that I couldn't even imagine.😢
So many of your questions get answered in Catching Fire (my personal favorite of the trilogy). Keep on going!!
Love your reactions and so glad you're getting into my favorite book to movie adaptations ❤
Thank you so much 🥺😭
I only just realised that Buttercup is a completely different cat in this movie.
Hunger games series are my favorite of all time I’m so happy they making more
I need your Catching Fire reaction NOW
“Not y’all jumping him and still losing” 😂😂😂
omg stop calling Peeta “Peter” pleeeease 😭
(loved the video, this just drove me absolutely nuts the whole time)
Just stumbled upon your channel through this reaction and I already love it 😂.
Yess pleasee make a catching fire reaction!! Thats the best of the 4 😭
I’m over here making a sandwich then suddenly i hear “SNAP HER NECK KATNISS! SNAP HER NECK” 😭
the first movie is more just about katniss trying to survive than a love story. she clearly cares for Peeta and he loves her, but she never truly sees a reality until later on (not giving any spoilers)
Next one is such a step up from this first one. Excited for your reaction
Baby idk how I got here, but I’m glad I am! Finna binge you for sure. Love your energy ❤
YT brought me here but I’m definitely staying! Excited for Catching Fire (introducing the best character of the series imo)
I’m so ready for ur future reactions of hunger games
The love story is stronger and more explained in the books. How she loves and thinks of gale as family and not in that way and how she trys to push her feelings for peeta down. Its more ambiguous in the films to sell the triangle story.
This was was amazing, can't wait for your Catching Fire reaction! When I say you'll be GAGGED. Plus, you'll meet my forever boo-bear Finnick. ❤
in the book the guy from district 11 does fight Kado and gets defeated! The books are always better than the movies.
“Her outfit is giving….poverty” 😹😹😹
Lol I die laughing at myself because I really just said ANYTHING😂😂
Please watch all three. The books you can tell more that Katniss is confused on her feelings than in the movies
you’re gonna love cf
“Woooooow Peter” 😂😂😂
“They have no control over what their ancestors did”
CAN WE REMEMBER THESE WORDS THE NEXT TIME ANYONE DEMANDS REPARATIONS
Idk if you'll see this, but the reason the deer is harder to hunt than the bird, is that the deer needs to be shot in certain areas of it's body to bring down otherwise it runs away injured, then you have to track it or it just gets away. A bird you can hit almost anywhere and take it down.
Boy you have to read the books, there is a part where they go to all the districts on their way back and Katniss speaks briefly with Rue's family, is so heartbreaking...
