  • When all hope is lost, things really do take a turn for the worst. In this TLOU2 breakdown, we explore Ellie's character development from when she' leaves the fireflies with Joel, to when she's completely broken. We discuss how Joel's death deeply affects her, and how she uses her anger, aggression and hatred to deal with her emotions.

That scream she unleashes at the sky after she unhands Abby is Ellie's realisation that killing Abby wouldn't take her pain away. That's how I read it, anyway.
I'd honestly have liked it for the two of them to have parted without violence, but that's just me.

100% agree with her realizing that about Abby!

Cool vid! Really enjoyed the style and flow of it :D
I always get confused tho at the 'she killed hundreds of people' thing cause Joel killed hundreds of people to get Ellie to the Fireflies and people don't criticise that :/
I like the outlook that Ellie said "I can't let you go" rather than anything else, figures that it's not even personal anymore, she's just so broken and stuck over what happened with Joel...
By the end it's not even so much about Abby as it is Ellie fighting with herself. Whole thing is so heartbreaking, she starts the fight with the image of Joel dead, and ends it with the start of the forgiveness scene, and just falls into finally feeling her grief rather than just blind anger.
I wonder if the third game will finish the circle with her giving her life for a cure...or worse, deciding whether to sacrifice another immune kid for a cure...only to find out that the needless violence will continue either way, and it won't actually help rebuild the world because humanity is broken just like Ellie..
Keep up the good work! :D

Very well said! I will eventually be doing a character breakdown of joel and him killing hundreds of people will definitely be a part of it!

For me, there was just a disconnect between not killing Abby at the end but killing dozens of strangers on the way to her. What’s one more at that point?

tbh this happens in a lot of games though. Ludo-narrative dissonance possibly. There has to be enemies to fight in an action game, but is it really realistic to say that the character Ellie actually canonically killed all of those people in gameplay? The only people we can say she killed for sure were in cutscenes
