In the middle of the Canadian Prairies at Saskatoon John G. Diefenbaker Airport are a dozen or so Fokker F-28s, in the livery of Canadian Regional Airlines.
But why exactly are these old planes sitting in Saskatoon, in the livery of an airline that hasn't existed for almost 20 years?

Thank you for this! When I was a kid, Canadian Airlines was one of my core memories. Every glance of that red chevron at the airport meant that something wonderful was just around the corner...either picking up a loved one from far away, or going on an adventure in the sky.
Looking forward to (hopefully) more Canadian Airlines history on your channel!

Yes it was, we are looking to have TAV in Lethbridge this year for it's first airshow in years as well and be on display for everyone to come and board and take a view of this amazing aircraft. As well C-GTIZ will hopefully still be in Saskatoon for the Aviation days again this year before we move it also back to Alberta. Thank you for the support!

What a great video, thanks. I was so sorry to see Canadian being merged with AC - we all knew where this was going to end! On a separate note, I absolutely loved the good old F-28. I managed to log in quite a few flights on it during the '80s and '90s, even though it was never a particularly common jet, neither over here in Europe. It was a delightful aircraft, which offered a nice spacious cabin (far better than the CRJ) that compared favourably even to bigger planes like the DC-9 or the MD-80.

I remember flying the F28 with Ansett Australia in and out of Canberra. Ansett finally came to an end in 2001, unable to survive the onslaught of the recently privatised Qantas - rather similar to Canadian and Air Canada.

Hey Alex, fascinating video. When your script is as factually dense as this, you may want to consider making some sort of chart/visualization. It gets quite confusing when there is so much information packed into such a short time!

Not all of the CP fleet went to Air Canada. The CP North fleet was sold to first nations and never went to AC. And Inter Canadien had a storied past with some times being independantly owned and competing, intendenatly onwed at acting as feeder/code share, and some times being onwed by Canadian Regional/Canadian Airlines. Not long before its death, CP sold Inter Canadian to 3rd party but maintained it as feeder carrier. (this gave CP some cash to survive).
So at the time AC bought CP, as CP didn't own Inter Canadien, its fleet and employees were not transfered, and Air Canada did not hired Inter Canadien as feeder carrier. The airline declared bankruptcy and faililng to find a way out, then declared liquidation.
At that time, it had 2 F28s undergoing heavy maintenance in Trois Rivières (IIRC) with aircraft in pieces in shop floor. The maintenance company could not touch parts until liquidation would be decided, but not only was maintenance company not getting paid for those, but the presence of "frozen" aircraft in its hangar meant it could not perform other schedule work for other customers, so it had to go to the Inter Canadien bankruptcy judge for help. The IC creditors agreed to pay to finish the work to rebuild the F28s. These F28, fresh out of a rebuild quickly found buyers (private) and the creditors ended up ahead of the expenses of paying to finish the maintance compared to selling the parts,. (I beleive their 3rd F28 was sold too).
The F28 was a VERY loud aircraft. And not only were hushkits not available, but Fokker had gone out of business of making aircraft.
I was one on a 1 hour flight YYZ-YUL after 20 hours of flying from Australia (SYD-HNL-YYZ) and trust me, you don't ever want to take an F28, especially not in row 13 right next to the engine. If you're up front, they aren't so bar, but in the back, they were probably causing permanenet damage to ears.
The ATR42s were fine. (some of them went to replace the HS748 in for First Air).

Thanks Alex. I wondered what happened to them. I worked for Canadian/Air Canada cleaning these aircraft on night shift at YYC Hanger 101. TIZ was a plane with a couple of accidents (ran off a runway and fell off a truck when being moved) and some coworkers wouldn't fly on it, even to the point of ticking off a spouse having to wait for a later flight on another plane LOL. I hope one will be preserved. Thanks!

As a former CRA/Jazz employee I was fortunate to fly on these jets. As mentioned elsewhere, they were spacious in comparison to other short-haul jets. Our pilots always said the F-28 was a joy to fly, like a sportscar in the air. They were awfully loud inside and out however. Thanks for this excellent retrospective.

Noticed that too, but what's interesting is that that aircraft (C-FTAV) never flew for Linjeflyg, nor did any of the other F-28's in the fleet. And none of Alpha Victor's previous operators had any ex Linjeflyg F-28's either. So I can't help but wonder where that yoke came from.

Very interesting--thank you! I recall flying in an F28, I believe from Winnipeg to Edmonton or else may have transferred to it in Saskatoon. There was a full cabin and somewhere in the Saskatoon area, we hit Clear Air Turbulence CAT. It was VERY strong and at one point the aircraft began porpoising, the nose and tail sections going rapidly up and down. I was in the rear portion and passengers were actually screaming from fear. It lasted long enough that most of us were thinking the worst when it finally ended! My only trip in an F-28.

Had the opportunity to fly on a couple of these back in the 90s to Sandspit. Very old at the back and they were on the power quite a bit on landing there. Sandpit having water on both ends of the runway made for an incentive to make sure you landing properly there. No reverse thrust on these. But the tail sped brake was cool to see and simlar to Bae -146 in that respect.

What I don't understand is how that much money can be wasted by a company? What would the value of those planes been when they were parked? Then the Canadian tax payer gives the company tax breaks to just let them sit and rot away to zero. How is it legal for a company to waste money like that and then be given tax deductions like depreciation, cost of storage etc to write off against their profits made when it seems to be clear there was no real effort put in to selling at a reasonable price. You see this so much . The rich corps just wasting assets so they can get a deduction against earnings for the year. No real interest in using their assets to do business. How many empty lots sitting around with no interest in being developed etc.

not completely correct. air atlantic did not get absorbed. ken rowe purchased it (imp group) and when he couldn't get routes to toronto, shut down the airline. then canadian regional took over routes with air atlantic doing routine maintenance. air atlantic continued doing third party maintenance until 911 and closed completely

A sad day when CAIL was sacrificed by the Federal Gov't in Canada as they were major shareholders in Air Canada.........Canadians have suffered with what is essentially a one international airline country ( Canadian owned ) Sad commentary :-(

Gotta love Canadian air history . Multiple western airlines emerge and fold while AC continues . Various planes are purchased but Bombardier arrives with taxpayer financed deals . Like cockroaches , these two never go away . Thanks Ottawa .
