- John Denver performs "Thank God I'm A Country Boy" with The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band at Farm Aid in Champaign, Illinois on September 22, 1985.
A performance from the first Farm Aid benefit concert. Willie Nelson, Neil Young and John Mellencamp founded Farm Aid and serve on the board of directors. The three agreed that family farmers were in dire need of assistance and decided to plan a concert for America. The show was put together in six weeks and was held on September 22, 1985 in Champaign, Illinois before a crowd of 80,000 people. It raised over $9 million for America's family farmers. Performers included Bob Dylan, Billy Joel, B.B. King, Loretta Lynn, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty and many more.
Dave Matthews joined Farm Aid's Board of Directors in 2001 to help further Farm Aid's mission of keeping family farmers on their land.

Doesn’t get any better than that. God I miss John Denver.
Hope that sound man got fired
I sure miss John Denver. Such an incredible talent, such joy when he’s performing, and what gifts he left for us all to enjoy forever.
This deserves 100 million views...!
so well said. We will never experience another talent like John.
U SHOOO,,,, GOT THAT RIGHT.!!!;)
Preferisco jhonny casch ma anche jhonn Denver è un grande del contry
I was there, for all 14 hours. Sat in the rain and cold, it was the greatest time of my life. I got to see alot of great performances from country to rock to jazz. Fantastic.
I went to his concert at the LA Forum and when this song started, with all the clapping and cheering, the bleechers shook as if we were having an earthquake!!! But it was awesome and there were so many people there to cheer him on, especially me and my brother and our mother. I will never get over his loss in a million years.
Me neither. What a horrific loss. He is missed.
lucky
Damn you're lucky, wasn't the LA Forum concert the one that was recorded and titled ''An Evening with John Denver?'' that was without question the best live performance of this song he or anyone else has ever done and you got to see it in person!
@@nathanmcdonald610 The whole experience was just awesome. We had nose bleed seats and had to look through binoculars, but it was grand.
@@nathanmcdonald610 "An Evening With John Denver" was recorded at the Universal Amphitheater in Los Angeles. Still have my album, which is a great album by the way. Saw him myself in 1975 in Hawaii. Per Wikipedia, the amphitheater was closed and demolished in 2013.
its amazing how close this is to irish folk/pub music. the rhyming, the fiddle. you can see the lineage.
That's because this style of music originated from the Southern U.S. and they where populated by a lot of Scotch-Irtish imagrents in the 18th and 19th centuries from the british isles. They brought over there irish/celtic folk music traditions which formed the basis of such style as old timey string music and bluegrass and other early Country styles.there are a number of american traditional folk tunes that borrow their tune from traditional Irish or Scotch folk songs.
100%
@@Charlesb88 Spot on.
@@Charlesb88 wow, I never knew about the true origins of country music. As a Scottish guy, I really love proper country music; both old and modern. There’s something about a healthy fiddle in a country song though!
Gota have a fiddle in the band.
John Denver was in a class above as he was a Hall of Fame songwriter, who rarely if ever covered another artist's song; he was a HOF musician on the acoustic 12-string guitar, not an easy instrument to master and often it was just JD and his guitar on the performance stage. John was an other-worldly HOF singer/vocalist, who admitted that the greatest snub of his life was that the concert promoters DID NOT WANT HIM TO PERFORM AT WOODSTOCK in the late summer of 1969, claiming he was too country. He wrote: “Thank God I’m a Country Boy” as he response to the hurtful Woodstock omission.
Loved his wahoo scream at the end of song just before "Thank God, I'm a Country Boy" !
Long live the memory of John Denver.
xoxo The Clarences
Thanks for introducing me to this dad... loved your VHS copy of this ! rip
John Denver was a one of a kind performer/singer/songwriter!The likes we don't have anymore at all!!R.I.P.John..
I absolutely love John Denver! I may not have been around for a while after his time but his music is fueled with such passion! Damn near brings a tear to my eye every time i hear Country Gods! RIP John Denver!
One of the best musicians of all time. Kentucky country boys will always take their hats off for John Denver.
This is actually one of my favorite John Denver songs.
It's a lot of people's favorite myself included. 😂
Is it just me or is John Denver super hot here? Gotta love the 80's.
rocknroller1986 - No, I think he hit his zenith of utter hotness right there at Memorial Stadium.
Definitely not just you, lol. I'm weirdly attracted to him in this video.
Yup, I think so too!
My fave John Denver song - I’ve lived in cities since I was 18 but I grew up in the country and am still a country girl at heart ❤️
I was there. Just a 22 year old college student. Had the time of my life. John Denver brought the house down with this song. Had to be 100,000 there. Very electric atmosphere. It was truly an all day concert. Can't believe it's been that long ago. Time flies.
hARRELL kERKHOFF I was there also the whole weekend over `1.5 million people passed thru the gates
Wow! how lucky can you be......awesome cocert 1/19.20
I listened from the comfort of my dorm room in Allen Hall. My room faced west. Big crowds were never my scene. That concert was LOUD.
John Denver sings the best, his enthusiasm is unsurpassed, and people don't forget he was real and a very down to earth country boy.. Very well loved by this fan, miss you John. John is even better in real life as you can see, he loved people.
What a great talent, I always enjoy seeing his performances but they are bittersweet and i can't never think he was taken way before his time. Rest in peace John Denver and God bless you!
In retrospect, I realize I never appreciated him as much as I should have. People would criticize his hair, glasses, enthusiasm...as if rock stars were the paragons we should try to emulate! Even though I might not have admitted to liking him them, I did....and I miss him and respect him now.
I'll never forget the t-shirts emblazoned with his glowing countenance and the words "Fresh Fruit" underneath. They couldn't have been further from the truth!
That last wife he married - the Australian - she buried him. If he had stuck with Annie -- he is still alive and enjoying his golden years!
Ohhhhh that fiddle 🎻 player was perfection 🥰
Impressive live performance; He kicked ass!
I didn't know John Denver had played on the stage of FarmAid
This is hands down the best live version of TGIACB, it's more of a country rock version instead of the original folky version, this version rocks and rocks hard ❤️❤️❤️
thank you, I have since learned my error. I still sing this song almost daily, but now I laugh, as I sang it "fife" for so many years.
Me, too!
@pattyfromtoledo Glad to hear it and that you're enjoying the video! Spread the message far and wide...
Reminds me of my days as a Iowa farm boy!!!! Oh to go back to those days.
Amen
Whenever I want to feel good I play this video.😋
Despite the audio problems this Performance kicked ass!
I love his country music
An old mans memories, where did those days go?
I miss John Denver. It is sad how it ended for him, but he left a legacy behind.
I'm 17 from Indonesia, and ILOVETHISSONGSOMUCH
Thank You for sharing this Please everyone keep sharing this great man and his music
John and The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band what a combination GREAT JUST GREAT !
I love John Denver he is my all time favorite singer.
I just love his music and miss him daily.
If you were born in 63, as I. Do you think of your youth as being a 70's, or 80's off spring. Just wondering!
I was there at this event, loved it. Just moved back to Champaign, illinois
that is so cool! who else played??
carrie honey - I listened mostly from the comfort of my dorm room which faced due west, but did walk around the Memorial Stadium. Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp, Bob Dylan, and Neil Young are the performers I remember hearing, along with John Denver. That concert was LOUD.
THANK GOD I AM A COUNTRY GIRL !!!!!!!
I grew up on the outskirts of a rural town and have spent most of my adulthood in cities. I remember being a kid and dreaming of getting out. I loved John Denver then, but this song means more to me now than it did when I was a country kid.
Seen him in Ohio with my mom, sis and stepdad in 1977 or 8. Don't remember the time and place but will never forget the concert. It started late but when he did this song near the end... WOW!
John Sparks -.. I seen him at Inglewood forum same year.. and when John played this as encore it was the 1st time I seen "everyone" standing and clapping from floor to the top loges.. it was unreal!
Sounded fine live! Long day hell of a concert.
Timeless...so many facets to JD: Great vocalist, songwriter, conservationist, proponent of civil rights, flight enthusiast (whether that ended up good or bad). I vididly recall one of the few instances where he was grouped with Frank Zappa and Dee Snyder was when he had the balls to speak up at the PMRC hearings in the "Tipper Gore/Satanic Panic" era! Thanks for posting!
Pure charisma!
I love his ROAR!!!
Yeah! He’s a screaming goat!!!!
gotta say THANK YOU for posting this one! I haven't heard this song for like forever! "got me a fife, got me a fiddle, sun's comin' up, got cakes on the griddle" - for some reason that's a phrase I use almost daily (can't wait to show my kids this video)
Thank god for John Sommers
Thomas you are not alone. Only now have I started to appreciate his style.
Damn, dude on the fiddle is killin' it
That's John McEwen.
Thanks!! Great Song Great Cause!! American Farming The True America!!
perfect performance and a violin solo, but i´m still missing a banjo sound here :)
Love the great picture quality! Thanks for Keeping John Alive ! : ) PEACE
Thank god I'm a country girl....I recognise mysel in this song so much
clearly this is the death metal of country.
haaha. The only thing missing from this performance is him singing in the deep growly voice like death metal singers usually do and jumping into the crowd. That would be mad. 😂
And death metal artists are probably influenced by stuff like this.
And smash that acoustic guitar into pieces. Hardcore!
Rob Miljus
I'm sure some people have done that lol.
Merchandising and joey is at work
Made my day! I always preach to good Eggs to go out and Make a Difference - this will now be the "Official Song"!
Awesome simply awesome!
That was epic!
Growing up (I’m dead serious) as a young boy I’d ask my mom why she hasn’t married this guy.
Well, I got me a fine wife, I got me old fiddle
When the sun's comin' up I got cakes on the griddle
Life ain't nothing but a funny, funny riddle
Thank God I'm a country boy
*pattyfromtoledoOhio* and all this time I thought he was singing, "got me a fine life" Oh well. "life ain't nothin' but a funny funny riddle" Best video!
Wow! This Song Will Get You Off The Rocker & Dance!
We need a hole lot more of them
Love this song! So proud to be a Country girl ;-). Love that they play this song at the University of Montana Grizzly games! Most football teams play that rap crap...get's tiring. Good music never dies.
sooo true! I think they ALL sound good . . . such a fun and happy song . . . I get a good laugh every time I hear this now ~ and I still like to sing it my way . . . lol! : )
I went to the last Orioles game of the 2013 season yesterday. Got on the big screen doing the "Country Boy" dance during the 7th inning stretch. Good times.
