My grandson who turned 36 in September loved John “Member” we bought him a little tape player when he was a toddler and a tape with Sunshine On My Shoulder on it, he often fell asleep listening to that tape. John Denver was such a wholesome man, doubt that a mean thought ever crossed his mind. He was truly one in a million.

Boy, this takes me back. In July of 1971 my husband was discharged from the navy after four years in and out of Vietnam on a supply ship. He was so lucky to have been at sea and not fighting in the jungle. We finally did bring our boys (and girls!) home, but it had been a brutal slog for everyone. We became John Denver fans soon after he started his solo recording, and stayed fans until his tragic death. He wrote and sang for all of us. RIP, friend John. 🙏🏼❤️
@OttoByOgraffey Thank you. It's truly amazing how much his music and life have inspired me. He was the biggest reason I went to Colorado on my birthday last month. And boy, what a great 2 days I had. I almost want to move to the mountains. I truly felt at peace there. I traveled all the way from West Central Indiana. I love my home, but one day, I think I just might go back and stay. 🏞
My favorite song in 1972 in 2nd grade was his song Rocky Mountain High. I really loved Someone Saved My Life Tonight by Elton John when it came out too even though at the time I didn`t grasp the full weight of the deep lyrics. I felt them somehow anyway and still love that song. There was so much great variety and sheer talent in music back then before it was dumbed down. Every night I sat alone in the front room with the light off with indirect light from another room coming in listening to a little clock radio in a rocking chair. Later I started sitting in my mom`s car each night listening to music. I got a decent little battery powered radio for Christmas one year and I remember hearing Stevie Nicks for the first time in the 70s outside under the bright stars on a late summer night and it felt magical like it was coming from the whole Universe. Music was so important to everyone back then and it remained that way for me through the 80s but in the 90s the record companies started ruining it and I remember getting angry about what was happening and Bill Clinton was 100% responsible because he destroyed real radio...local radio...independent radio. The last full album that truly impressed me was The Better Life by 3 Doors Down in 2000 but by that time radio had become too cringe to continue listening to. FBC! And FJB!

That wretched experimental plane John bought ( The Rutan Long-EZ) was created and built by a man who lives in the next town over from me here in Oregon. Every time I drive through that town I think of John. (R.I.P. Legend)
Not really a tragic accident, his flying license had been suspended by the FAA and he was not permitted to fly. He was flying a brand new plane which had very technical issues with the fuel system and he had only had a 30 minute training flight with it not nearly enough time to familiarize yourself with an aircraft.
@@jasongallops536 No he died a horrible death flying a plane he was not licensed nor properly trained to fly. It’s a wasted senseless death that could’ve been prevented and didn’t need to happen. That’s the sad part it was a preventable accident
I remember when Buddy’ Hackett was hosting the tonight show during this era. There was some sort of distraction on the set when John Denver was on. Hackett remarked “ hey cut that out! Don’t you know I’m talking to John Colorado?!” 😂
I had read somewhere that the Live Aide group that put on that feed the world song with all the rock stars wouldn't let JD participate because he was too folksy. 🙄

I still miss him and can only wonder what music he might have written by now.
What a voice! And no background vocals. He surely was good. I thought I knew all of his songs, but that was a new one to me. In 1975, when I was 10, we got his greatest hits album. I played until I wore the grooves off!

I saw John in KCMO around 1984. 2.5 hour concert on a rotating stage in the middle of the arena so everyone got a good view of the band. Quite the entertainer and talent.
@@melcrose I’m very well aware of how John died, I’ve been a commercial pilot for over 35 years and his plane crash was something I followed to know the cause. Also, the meaning of plucked is to quickly remove, which John was quickly removed from earth. It seams you are the one who doesn’t know the meaning of plucked.
Me too, huge John Denver fan. I fell in love with his music on old 8 track tapes, I was around 8 years old. 53 now. This was such a wonderful performance. I was lucky enough to see him once near the end there at Chastain Park. I was walking down by the stage and he saw me, he smiled and waved. One of the best moments of my life for sure :)
I saw him that night in Chastain!! Omg! Fell in love with him at age 10 in 1974 and my heart still aches that he's gone. I joke with everyone that when I get to heaven, I want to hug him before my mom who I lost in 1992 at age 47. God Bless John Denver! He's been one of the highlights of my entire life!
Far out! This was fantastic! I was only a couple months old when this aired. What a gentle soul and so damn cute! And the commercials were an added bonus! Thank you! 😊
This is absolutely incredible. I hope everyone realizes how special this recording is. I’ve never seen this live. Mike Taylor in the back with John upfront, unbelievable. The best of the very best right here. Thanks for the upload. This is a gem.
You might enjoy John singing this live on the Geraldo show. He extends the last part of the song....just incredible. If my memory serves me correctly, John Taylor and Dick Kniss are backing him.
My first concert was John Denver. My first vinyl albums were John Denver’s ‘Poems, Prayers and Promises’ and the Jackson 5,s ‘Skywriter’. I still love the music from the 70’s and 80’s.
John Denver sang it all perfectly and the songs really tell what life can be in his music a great artist and talent he was born gifted all in the music that he wrote he was a Great music performer that I listen to his music and enjoy ❤️🎶🎶🎵🎵🎶😊
Was lucky enough to be at that concert at Blossom Music Center. John is correct in saying that pretty much everyone was hoping he'd sing Saturday Night in Toledo Ohio. We were so excited when he did. It was a really fun night and great concert.
I miss John Denver so much. His music, his voice, his love of nature. He left us far too soon. I feel sad when I see videos of him. His death was a rough one for me. But I still listen to his music in my car on long rides. I always will.
Did this guy ever sing out of tune once in his career? Watched many of his performances and don’t think I’ve heard his voice anything other than pitch perfect. One of the best musicians, most creative artists, and purest souls of the last century.
Saw this comment on another video of John: "Most humans have a 3 octave voice - they have their normal voice - and can hit notes one octave higher and one octave lower!!! John Denver was born with - NOT ONLY - a "Pitch Perfect" voice (he was ALWAYS "on key" and once tuned an RCA studio piano - (Pianos have 7 octaves) using ONLY his voice!!) - but he also was born with a 5 octave voice!! Sometimes - God just gives some people all they need to have a truly wonderful career for the rest of us to enjoy!! Thank You - God and John Denver!"

I can still picture sitting in the family room, right by the floor model HiFi stereo system, with John Denver's 8Track tape playing. I can still see that. Looking up into the ceiling, picturing the windy Kansas wheat fields. Oh, how the world lost a great talent.

Cap Center, 11/76 I was 21. My dad stood in line there the day tickets went on sale, surprised mom, sis and me with 5th row seats on the floor, the stage was "in the round." What a show. It was like a revival or something. That 12 string, and his voice. As far as concerts go and I've been thousands, this was a well produced concert. Huge screen behind him when he sang "Matthew." I about died and went to heaven that night. Not forgotten it yet.

I made a point to see him every chance I got. I think I went to his concerts about a dozen times. One time I remember he broke a guitar string and he was just so funny when it happened. Another time a different friend of mine and I were walking away from the venue and we saw a limo flying by. We ran as fast as we could and waved and JD clearly waved out the window back at us. I generally am not a star struck person except when it came to John Denver.

That wretched experimental plane John bought ( The Rutan Long-EZ) was created and built by a man who lives in the next town over from me here in Oregon. Every time
I drive through that town I think of John. (R.I.P. Legend)
Not really a tragic accident, his flying license had been suspended by the FAA and he was not permitted to fly. He was flying a brand new plane which had very technical issues with the fuel system and he had only had a 30 minute training flight with it not nearly enough time to familiarize yourself with an aircraft.
John was not a victim of the plane crash; He died doing one of the things he loved.
@@jasongallops536 No he died a horrible death flying a plane he was not licensed nor properly trained to fly. It’s a wasted senseless death that could’ve been prevented and didn’t need to happen. That’s the sad part it was a preventable accident
My husband and I saw John in concert, he was a wonderful entertainer ..so talented and charismatic...miss him !
There are no singers like John, humble, kind, loving & determined to create a better world ❤ I miss him & his music.
Johnny and John. What a combo. Nobody on late night could touch Carson not even today.
One of the best voices in music. What pure talent.
I just turned 59 . I just feel in love with his music. This is an incredible song
From another Jeff that turned 59 in August. I feel the same way!
I saw him in person. 4 times. I really miss that voice
You're so lucky. I never got to see him live.
I have always enjoyed John Denver, so this was a treat!
And the commercials even 🧡
@@marvingreenough2344 I had a commercial get interrupted by a commercial. 😂😂😂
Boy I sure miss John Denver. Maybe, I'm getting old.
I remember when Buddy’ Hackett was hosting the tonight show during this era. There was some sort of distraction on the set when John Denver was on. Hackett remarked “ hey cut that out! Don’t you know I’m talking to John Colorado?!” 😂
😂
He was a terrific song writer and had such a beautiful voice -
Everyone showed respect after they heard him sing…legend doesn’t go unnoticed all jokes stopped only pats on the back and respect. 🙏🏾
I had read somewhere that the Live Aide group that put on that feed the world song with all the rock stars wouldn't let JD participate because he was too folksy. 🙄
Sad, because John Denver belonged there.
I was living in Mexico City when this aired and never even heard of John till the next year when I came back to Texas. The guy who told me about him was kind enough to put on a John Denver album and play the whole thing. I was an instant fan. What a songwriter and what a voice. I still miss him and can only wonder what music he might have written by now.
What a voice! And no background vocals. He surely was good. I thought I knew all of his songs, but that was a new one to me. In 1975, when I was 10, we got his greatest hits album. I played until I wore the grooves off!
Hello 👋 Christine. How are you doing? Hope you are fine, I'm Mark Clifford and am from Denver Colorado. Where are you from? You seem like a real country girl
It is by chance my son mentioned he was heading to the Rocky Mountains - and a flood of memories of John Denver came back. Still remember all the words - can't remember what I had for breakfast. God bless you all
(New Zealand)
The 70's and 80's were such a great time to grow up.
I really feel sorry for the generations after genX.
Agree!!
We probably didn't fully appreciate it at the time
Wow. I love ❤️ John Denver! No apologies, the end.
Àm in Pacific Grove where the folk here have Memory and paid Homage to the Great Artist's life and contribution to Humanity.
He was just beginning to rise to stardom when he did this appearance. Rocky Mountain High , Sunshine On My Shoulders and Annie's Song were yet to come
Hello 👋 Linda. How are you doing? Hope you are fine, I'm Mark Clifford and am from Denver Colorado. Where are you from? You seem like a real country girl
Johnny Carson was just promoting the Rocky Mountain High album.
72, my second baby was born, just got out of the baby. Went home to Oregon. So much reminds me of that time, good time. John Denver's music was such a wonderful part. So funny, our doctor was John Denver's double, it would really catch people off guard.
What great sole. Rest In Peace John Denver. Gone, but never forgotten.
John was a treasure, and so was Johnny. Thanks for sharing this.
I always did like John Denver to me. He was a wonderful guitar player. They said he was also a fairly nice person. What a shame to lose such a talented person. I sure miss him, and I always say this he was well loved by many and missed by all. May he rest in peace.🥲🥲🎸😎💖
That’s the John Denver I remember. R.I.P. Mr. Denver.
I saw JD twice back in the day. His concerts were truly amazing. He gave so much of himself when preforming.
I saw John in KCMO around 1984. 2.5 hour concert on a rotating stage in the middle of the arena so everyone got a good view of the band. Quite the entertainer and talent.
I sure miss John Denver, he was plucked from this earth to soon, what a beautiful voice.
He flew an experimental airplane over the ocean. I'm not sure you know what "Plucked" means.
Some people aren't meant to live to old age...How I miss JD and his music. ❤❤❤
😥
Thank you! 😊
My thought exactly…the commercials really took me back. Wish they would do that on all the Carson vids
The commercials were great to see again!
I miss my old neighbor John Denver! He was our neighbor during the time of this show.
Neat! Did you get to know him personally? That would be so cool if you did.
I was 13 and remember this. I would stay up to watch Johnny at night and really enjoyed his show. Too bad there is not a night show on today like his.
John Denver is the one singer that will strike that emotional signal in my inner soul, what a voice, and what a song writer he was.
Such a wonderful talent. Love his music. Gone too early.
I had such a huge crush on John. Great video. He is still so very missed...
No other artist has the number of songs that move the heart. He was a God srnd RIP JOHN, YOUR LOVED AND MISSED.
I am 61 and live in Canada. I remember listening to John Denver, in my High School years. I can still picture sitting in the family room, right by the floor model HiFi stereo system, with John Denver's 8Track tape playing. I can still see that. Looking up into the ceiling, picturing the windy Kansas wheat fields. Oh, how the world lost a great talent.
I’am 62 and also from Canada, and a great John Denver fan ... I also remember playing and singing John’ s songs in high school . Very similar to you .... I remember seeing John Denver live in concert in Vancouver,B.C. ..... he sounded just like his albums live ...very impressive and incredible voice... He past way too young
Loved Dom - was everywhere back in the 70’s. Was so much fun.
Genius. JD was so unique. An amazing songwriter with a beautiful voice. I've not heard this song before. Geniuses often have really difficult times with being married and walking the world between people and the spiritual realm. We people on earth are spiritual beings having a human experience. RIP John. You are far from being forgotten.
My mother Loved John Denver. She was old enough to be his mother . She thought he was adorable and left too young . When she passed away we were on the way to the Cemetery and decided to listen to the Radio and out came County Roads take me home ❤ not a dry eye in the car . No doubt. He loved his fans and they him 😁 . We all took it as we don't know what's next but if John and Mom are there it's probably far out and pleasant.
John Denver simply the best
His voice is an antidepressant. Rip 😇
Very true. Experienced it that way as well.
Truly. Some will say he was corny but when you get into each song it seems designed to lift you up.
I actually find a lot of his songs to be melancholy.
This!
My favorite singer of all time. So grateful I got to see him perform. I still listen to his music and think about what other great songs he would have written. Thanks for sharing this video❤
Love John. And Mike Taylor was one hell of a lead guitarist.
I miss this man so very much, his music, his love for all of God's absolute amazing creations! I saw him many times, and each time were the memories of a lifetime!! I miss you, J.D., and one day, I'll see again, so keep singing and flying in the home we all long for. So much love.
😇🙏❤️💕💕💕
Cap Center, 11/76 I was 21. My dad stood in line there the day tickets went on sale, surprised mom, sis and me with 5th row seats on the floor, the stage was "in the round." What a show. It was like a revival or something. That 12 string, and his voice. As far as concerts go and I've been thousands, this was a well produced concert. Huge screen behind him when he sang "Matthew." I about died and went to heaven that night. Not forgotten it yet.
So you are 67 i am 58 time flies by.Even though more the 80's songs for me I really liked most of his songs.Jim Croce another great singer who perished.
This was just before John really became a superstar and developed a bit of a celebrity persona. It’s so nice to see his innocence, musicianship, and roots in protest music on display here. Thanks for posting this!
Love him! Miss this time and music. Great memories
No one could pull off a live performance as close to the recorded version as John Denver
I made a point to see him every chance I got. I think I went to his concerts about a dozen times.
One time I remember he broke a guitar string and he was just so funny when it happened. My favorite memory was one time between songs it for quiet for a second and a friend of mine and I shouted "we love you John!" And he replied "I love you too!" We were thrilled. Another time a different friend of mine and I were walking away from the venue and we saw a limo flying by. We ran as fast as we could and waved and JD clearly waved out the window back at us. I generally am not a star struck person except when it came to John Denver.
@@cathyizzo7886 Neato! Saw him three times: Ravinia and Arie Crown in Chicago area and West Lafayette at Purdue. Was in Aspen one spring in late 70s during celebrity pro-am race and he skied up right behind me!
@@bellatrixg ❤️😍🥰
Love John Denver!! Saw him twice before he passed. Rest in peace.
Hello 👋 Kathy. How are you doing? Hope you are fine
Never would have believed I would actually love the commercials as much as the show...thanks for including them!! Was only 6 when this came out, obviously too young to watch the Tonight Show.
Never heard this version, God Bless you Son!
I.oved his music. So easy to harmonize with and feel good!
His song with Olivia Newton John fly away was his best song. Two beautiful voices.
Brilliant song..even today in 2023.
I was a young teen and played that album over and over.
Wow what a talent he truly was
Two legends.... I was blessed to grow up with both of them.... RIP Johnyb& John....... .......Be well, do well & God bless y'all🙏🏼🇺🇸
