John Denver's Last Public Performance

- What this is is video of John Denver's last public performance, Oct 5 1997, before being killed exactly a week later. This was in Corpus Christi, TX at the Selena Auditorium. I used to work for a station back then and was one of several allowed in to shoot just the first 2 songs. His people warned us NOT to shoot continuous, only to roll for about 20 seconds, then stop 10. I ignored them and rolled straight. When one of the guys noticed I had done so, they kicked me out halfway into the second song.
The first song is Boy From The Country. Amazon is the second.
Bear in mind that this was shot on just one audio channel (the "nat sound" mic) so it isn't in stereo. It was shot for quick editing purposes so there are a variety of shots to facilitate quick editing (wide, medium, tight).
So, enjoy while you can before some other greedy company pops up to ruin this unique, wonderful piece of history.
One last thing. I DID try to offer this video to John's family back in the early 2000's. I contacted someone through his official site who stopped corresponding with me when I offered them the video. Years later, when this video was originally up on here, a friend of the family contacted me and said John's mother had just died several months prior and she wished she had know about this sooner and shown her before she died. She thanked me for putting up for those who would appreciate it. And that is why I am doing this. Not for $ from ads or clicks or anything. To simply share it with those who love John Denver. Salud! I'm 71, this man's music has lived in my soul. He kept me alive through my USMC days, he brought me through some times that most folks wouldn't ever understand....this ole Montana country boy. Love you John, I pray you are singing for the LORD!
I,am still miss him❤
Thank You for your Service to our country 🇺🇸 God Bless 🙏
I'm 76. I listen to John more than ever. His voice and message restore my soul.
God bless you! John was a special man. I love him.

There never was and never will be another musician and poet like John Denver. Your legacy lives on John. I still grieve your passing, and your music is a part of me forever.
John was "far out " to say the least.
No never. I loved him
Yes, and I feel the same way. I loved his music & felt devastated when I heard he had died. So sad….
I do too
My thoughts and feelings exactly. 😢❤️😢
So strange how most of us go through life not knowing that one week from now we could be gone. Live everyday like it's your last! John Denver is the sound of my youth. Rest in peace John. ❤️
And ask GOD for forgiveness.

In these days of discontent in our world, I find solace in John’s music.
Amen, he was peace and love!!!
I’m a 61-year-old male and I still get chills when I hear John sing. Such a powerful beautiful voice. Boy from the country, I think has to be my all-time favorite song that John Denver performed. I got to see him back in about 1980 or 81 I believe at the universal amphitheater. George Burns opened the show. Good times, good times.
My dad was a DJ in the 1970s. He brought home the John Denver album where John was holding his hat and smiling. The first time I played it I was forever hooked. Never got to attend a concert. I could sit for hours with a coffee cup in my recliner and listen to him. Beautiful voice and creative artist.
So we'll said the best hope you are with Jesus john you bought a lot to this world with your songs

Saw him once. Loved this man and his music!
John did, does, and
will always get me through the bad days. He was a joy!
I was just thinking this myself today. I live such a complicated life, no one can know. But he gets me thru’ just as he always did decades & decades back.
John Denver was a great story teller.. and he told them best with a guitar and a song. One of the few one-man-bands I know that could hold an audience. Bless his heart.
Hello 👋 Rhona. How are you doing ? Hope are you fine. Im Scott Clifford and am from Denver Colorado, where are you from . You seem like a real country girl
This is beautiful. There will never be anyone who can touch his talent.
Oh my, there is but one other. But they’re two of a billion! The other is still alive.
@John Woods Can you make a comment without being nasty? I have my opinion, you have your opinion. If being an asshole to some random stranger on a YEAR old comment makes you feel good, seek help. Immediately.
Went to his first concert in Sydney Australia brilliant.
I’m 82 and love this man and his music.. loved him for nearly 50 years.
I saw him on a short tour just before his crash. I was so sad when I heard the news. John Denver was an amazing songwriter, singer, conservationists & humanitarian. He was truly a soul who was greater than the sum of the many talents he possessed.
I get all goosebumps and misty eyed when I hear John Denvers voice. I fell in love with this beautiful, gentle, nature loving man many moons ago. And will never tire listening to his songs over and over - John you will always be with those of us who love and feel your beautiful emotions. Always in my heart. 😍💝😍💝😍💝🙏
Thank you so much, rest in peace John Denver, l will Carry you with me as long as I can.
I agree.
I love and miss JD forever too❤
I am so emotional watching this. I have loved him since the first time I heard his voice almost 50 years ago. He was my first crush that I never quite got over. I know he's making beautiful music in Heaven.
Ahhhh, Gibson. Your name equates to John Denver’s first guitar given to him by his Grandma. It was a Gibson F hole jazz guitar. Go figure. But, that’s the one he learned on as a young boy.
John is still alive. That plane crash on october 12 1997 was a set up!
I've footage of him talking and singing a protest anti Bill Gates vaccin song. If you hear that voice, you immediateley recognize him!
No doubt about IT
John Denver en several other "dead" famous people are planning the world to show how bad things are in the world. Soon they will show up!!!!
And no, i'm not a crazy fool. Nothing seems what it looks like!
Think of my words when you'll Found out 💋
The best singer ever...
Rest in Peace
His music defined the longings of my youthful soul. I just loved his music so much. I cannot believe he is gone, so long ago. I depended on him to express who I was or wanted to be.
My first experience with John was in 1964-65, when he worked at Ledbetters in West L.A.. what a voice, personality and a friendship I enjoyed every time I went to the club. I miss his live voice, but I have every recording he ever released. Miss you very much, John. R.I.P. 🎶
It's so neat that you got to take in those earlier performances that he wrote about in his book.
Lucky you!
We did not lose John Denver, he will always be with us with his unending stories of life, love, nature, wildlife, human being through his music.
Yes so true... and he told us so in his song "Autograph"'.
Here I am closing my eyes again
Trying so hard not to see
All the things that I see
Almost willing to lie again
I swear that it just isn't so
It just isn't me
We are never alone
Even though we'd like to be...
Then I go and open my eyes again
Love in your eyes is the thing
That I'd most like to see
I'd be willing to die again
To know of a place and a time
That it always would be
To be always with you
And you always with me
This is my autograph
Here in the songs I sing
Here in my cry, in my laugh
Here in the love that I bring
To be always with you
And you always with me
Say a prayer and
Open your heart again
You are the love and the life
That we all need to see
Always willing to shine and then
Peace on this earth is the way
That it always can be...
To be always with you
And you always with me
This is my autograph
Here in the songs that I sing
Here in my cry, in my laugh
Here in the love that I bring
To be always with you
And you always with me

Agreed, because we're still on here watching him and he pleases us.
Agree, he will always be a wonderful person, entertainer and a kind soul
He lives
John, those were beautiful days when you placed your musical footprint upon Earth, and called to her soul. Thank you for sharing this gentle depth with us. You will always have a place in my heart. Rest in peace.
Amen
He was so pure in his music. He inspired me to learn to play the guitar.
I saw him in Austin in one of his very last shows and sitting close and center to stage. I was given a set of strings from one of his guitars he played that night. Thank you for this video, it's impossible to choose a favorite song but if forced, Amazon would be one of them❤️What a gift and presence he was to us, there are really no words.
I was there also.
I love John Denver. I loved him from the first song that I heard him sign. So calming and his music will live forever. Beautiful! We need more of him today.
Hello!!! How are you doing today! Please pardon me for intruding into your privacy but I just wanted to know if you're a fan... Stay Safe!
Every time I hear that voice, I get misty. He wrote and sang songs of substance. His lyrics had meaning for all of us; for the world. I miss him terribly. Such a loss.
Missed in Colorado
Exactly I agree 🏞️💛🎸
@@danellyas9913 I'm sure it's not the same there now.. 🏞️💛🎸 without John Denver.. I always have love him and his voice and music..he will always be remembered..
I think the same; a great poet who could catch the deep meaning inside every daily simple thing.
@@marcom.8114 Yes exactly!
How is it possible that one singer can so beautifully and passionately express and share the human experience like a bed time story to a frightened child on a stormy night in such a clear and simple a way that everyone can identify with it . . . . leaving us with this aching, empty feeling when the song reaches its end? John did it so well with this song, with Looking for Space, with Annie’s Song, with Take Me Home Country Roads, with How Can I leave You Again..... John had the divine gift to draw those loving and compassionate human feelings from deep within our spirit that are so often ignored, buried, and lost in the noise and troubles of modern society. We badly need him now but it seems we shall not see his like again.....
WhiteElfStar really love your comments
He was so a special man. He was a poet. He was often misunderstood. I think he was a bit sad.
So beautifully said. Thank you! I feel the same
Beautifully said. Thank You. 💟
WhiteElfStar Beautifully stated.
Johns talent's were so amazing. He never gets credited as a guitarist but his guitar playing and his voice was all that was needed to fill an auditorium. John lived a short life giving so much joy to people even when he was sad.
His talents and equally his presence filled auditoriums. I had the privilege of seeing him perform live once in Pittsburgh, near the end of his life, and I'll never forget it. I felt like he reached out and touched me, singing to me directly. What a gift.
I saw him at Heinz Hall in Pittsburgh February 14th, 1997 before his tragic accident. Saw him a few times in concert. Was the Best!
@@billpuhljr1073 Good memories I am sure.
But it probably blew your mind when you heard of his crash.
Yes, he was truly amazing, as a songwriter, singer, guitarist, performer, and actor. There was a time back in the 1970s when he was one of biggest stars around, with hit singles and albums, TV shows, movies, and covers of his songs by other artists. But this concert is how I enjoy John Denver the most: just him, his guitar, his voice and songs, and his rapport with the audience. Such pure and magical artistry.
never got to see this incredible talent live and i was 11 when he died, (i still remember watching the Today show segment that following Tuesday morning two days after he died and i was just stunned and just kept looking at the shots of the rescue boat and just thinking, "no way, it wasn't that bad. it was just a small glitch. i'm sure he's fine".) i just couldn't process it.") and again, at the time i was only 11 but i knew and could sing Annie's Song, Country Roads and Rocky Mountain High spot on. he was one of my biggest inspirations to pick up the guitar and now im working towards an EP because of inspirations like him! Thank you John for your voice, your talent and your never ending inspiration! You are loved and missed still and your music forever lives!
Just found this. I'd been listening to John singing Calypso over the last week, and played it several times. Can't believe its over 20 years since the world lost this fabulous singer. His voice was like silk, and all his songs had such meaning. As a rock fan myself, I do believe that John was so worth listening to he was up there with the very very best of 20th century musicians. He is sorely missed.
A huge thanks for this. He launched my musical career which is still thriving. He has also been the motivation for my twelve string obsession which began when I was handed his twelve after a show he did. He let me play it for a few minutes and was so gracious and supportive of my playing that I went out and bought the same model guitar the next day. RIP John. You are greatly missed every day.
Thanks for sharing you personal story.
That's so cool.
What a Gift he gave to all of us. His voice moves our spirits to soar. Nobody will ever top him.
sotvomike - from the depths of my heart, I thank you for sharing this, his last performance. Hope you find pleasure in knowing that you're sharing this with people who fell in love with JD's songs and what he did to make the world a better place. There will NEVER be anyone quite like him. One in a billion means there's seven others like him. One's Rick Astley the meme legend, then...?
I miss your music, John. You and your songs will live on in our hearts. May they never be forgotten.

To quote from the documentary about him, "John represented America at its best and healthiest." I can't imagine my childhood without his songs, his music, or his voice.
I agree , I couldn't believe when he passed. The world has been somewhat empty since he left for another world. thanks for the video.

WOW! His last concert! Thank you for your persistence in taping as much as you could - who knew it would be his last one! I still miss this man and his beautiful, wonderful, so caring and even funny songs! He was such a strong advocate for keeping our world as safe, clean and beautiful as possible. We lost so much when he died. God Bless, John!
I am 81 and it feels old when I realize how young John was when he died. We are blessed to the many recordings of his voice and music.
His performing was incredible. Effortless and pure. He's a top 10 performer in my book.
The man was true artist. Highest level of respect from me.

A beautiful spirit that touched my heart as a child with the true essence of love in his music. Thank you for sharing it with us.
John forever changed the texture and meaning of being alive. Through his music, there was beauty and magic in living. His presence was a life-changing event before he ever sang or played a note. John possessed intangible qualities and attributes that have forever changed the world we live in. All sentient beings, all manner of life, and the earth itself suddenly mattered and responded accordingly. All the stars, galaxies, and the whole of the universe have consciously shared in our happiness, joy, and loving memories of John's life.
Beautifully said. Thank you.
I saw his last concert in Baltimore in September 97''. His sound was impeccable. Aside from Tom Petty who also has a great live show, John never missed a beat. RIP John you will ALWAYS be missed.

The Boy From the Country sounds like his autobiography. ❤️😓 What an incredible voice and spirit.
I saw him live in concert five times, sadly he never sang this song which is one of my all time favourites of his.
Boy From the Country was written by Michael Martin Murphey
This is such a gem to treasure forever. Thank you so much for sharing it.
Thanks for putting it back up. It needs to be seen with no ads to demean his legacy. I miss him a lot. I can hardly imagine the songs still inside him yet to be put to paper.
Thank you so much for posting this special video! I was blessed to have been able to connect with JD personally.. and was backstage at his concert in Austin the previous night on October 4, 1997 with him. He was actually the happiest I had ever seen him and had been backstage a few times after initially meeting him backstage at the amazing Wildlife Concert! And got to go both nights to that incredible event! :-) But this is awesome.. to have your posting of his very last concert.. thank you so much! And if anyone out there ever knows if the Wildlife Concert outtakes have ever been released, especially as videos, I'd love to know it! He redid a few songs several times, including Darcy Farrow recorded 3 times, with some funny remarks being made throughout.. all people who loved John Denver would love to see those moments! Thanks again! :-)
John Denver .. nature ?.. given us all what is really worthwhile in life ? .. see For the good times cover Albert Croak on youtube .. Kathys song cover and other videos with more to come ? All the best Karen.
I started high school that very yr only to stumble on his music now in 2019 @ 35yo. John is the real deal, a legend forever.

I sure understand his heart... especially through this song. I miss you, John. love.
Thank you. I miss him so! He was such an incredible soul. I hope the Heavens are enjoying him...if I could request a serenade into Heaven, I'd request John Denver.
I saw him in concert in the early 1990's. His voice was so beautiful, full of color, it quivered, such a marvelous gift. He wore a flowered shirt and a gold chain, and played the piano at Canada's Wonderland. I will never forget it.
Love this. Thank you for posting again!
Thank you for sharing the video and the story. He will always be my number 1.
Thank you for reposting. I never got to see him live, so this type of video is a gold to me. As for sleeping with his guitar, I think it was because he often dreamt songs in his sleep and often awoke in the night to play his dream melodies.....its a musician thing. ;-)xx
thanks for putting it up. I had the best evening of my life in Germany at a John Denver Concert in Munich ...I will never forget him and his music.!Still play his LP 's and think about him a lot. So sad that he had to go so early. R.I.P. John
I got to see JD twice in Pittsburgh. People who've never seen him live may not know...this cat had a voice that from 30 feet away (fourth row, floor seats) could rattle the fabric of your shirt. I'm talking tenor power!! Incredible performances, and I miss him to this day. The world truly needs more concerned artists like this, rather than the Hollywood morons who think their unsolicited opinions on everything from politics to morals is so important. Truly, The world is a lesser place with the likes of John Denver. RIP John.
Sadly, Hollywood kicked God out long ago. From what I've heard, John loved our Father and our Savior. All who trust in Christ will enjoy this wonderful man's music again.💖
How sad that I was too young and living too far away to have the chance to see his live performance before he was gone..
May his soul rest in peace.

Saw him live in London UK October 1982...right up front lol.. amazing performer.
He ceretainly had a powerful diaphragm and the lung capacity to go with it. I gave up cigarettes six years ago after smoking for 30 years, and singing John's songs has helped heal my lungs.
Thank you for putting this back up - I really missed it! John's music was with me from when I was born - and it's still (and always will be) the "soundtrack of my heart". Of all the other amazing artists that have passed on during my lifetime thus far, it's John that I miss most deeply and has left a hole in my heart.
It's for people like you that I put it back up. Sucks that greedy companies try to claim work that isn't theirs and ruin it for everyone.

That' s the Spirit!
+maranathagape --- Indeed -- he was an exceptional artist, an incredible talent, a wonderful but somewhat unappreciated guitarist, and a very kind and humble man. He was under-rated by many, and I think too unappreciated in his last few years before hs tragic and untimely accident. He is always missed.
John Denver WAS my life. He took me to places in my mind that I still visit today. In real life or in dreams John is there. From the top of the Rockys to West Virginia to the depth of the ocean. His voice lingers on.
Thank you for posting this, what an incredible gift John Denver had.
Thank you for reposting...especially on this date...January 4, 1977 was the date my life changed forever and I lost my Mom. Fortunately for us, we got to see several of Johns live performances together...was an amazing poet, performer, writer, musician and friend.
John Denver did his best to warn us. A world with out wild animals is not a world to live in.
You said it ? .. listen to .. for the good times Albert Croak on youtube , especially the 3rd verse ? others to see ?
I my self heard every word John said when it came to the great outdoors and you are right if we don,t do something It will be to late,If it,s not already

And yet we have many animals and more stupid humans God is in control not us

JD and a guitar...nothing better. Thanks!
I finally got to see John Denver at this concert. I grew up in Corpus Christi, my cousin got me hooked on his music when I was a kid. It was such a great night and then such a heartbreak to lose him a week later. His beautiful music will endure

Thanks for posting this again. A moment in history.
what a voice and it is missed very very much rest in PEACE John Denver
John had a beautiful voice and a voice of reason and sanity when it came to preserving nature. The only people that listened to him was the people that cared, but not the greedy who will kill nature as we know it unless they are stopped.
very well put and you are right, the greedy will stop at nothing to get what they want at any cost, there idea with the land is that it is nothing unless you BUILD something on it.But the thing is once it gone it is gone forever everyone must do there part to help save the land I for one do Volunteer in parks that,s a start and i have fun doing it.Peace to you
Great are you god

Mike, you are a true John Denver fan to post this for the rest of us to enjoy. I loved John Denver's voice and music so much....I was fortunate enough to see him for the last time here in Austin, TX about 2 weeks before he left us. It was an amazing concert I will never forget.

Thank you for reposting! His legacy will live on forever.
Thank you so much for this!
Such a talent, who stood out alone, among so many others of that time.
Such a shocking loss we suffered that day.
I so hope John has found true peace in a place more beautiful than he could have ever imagined, or written of.
The absolute *Best Rocky Mountain High*.... *Forever*.
Thanks for posting as seeing this is so special! His voice was as strong as ever here too!!!!! JD is still missed!!!!
My husband and I saw John in concert back in '75 or 76". It was a magical night, one that meant everything to us as we loved John's music. My husband has joined John in paradise. I can imagine him sitting there among the masses before John as he performs for all of heaven.
thanks for sharing this. I enjoy it very much!
Thank you for sharing. So sorry you got booted from this. I"m always scouring RUclips for videos/concerts I havent seen yet. Love his music, voice and what he stood up for.
John Denver was my favorite artist when I was in my early teens. I found out he had died while I was on my honeymoon. I felt I had truly lost a big part of my childhood with his passing. His voice sounds as good here as it did in those early years. I saw him three times in concert and each was phenomenal. He is sorely missed and will be for many years to come.
Learning of his death that Canadian Thanksgiving weekend was pretty horrible for me. I can't imagine what it would have been like to have that grief on your honeymoon. I heart goes out to you.
thank you for putting this up,always loved his singing, what a loss for all of us.
I saw John at the N.E.C. Birmingham in March 1997 and he sang Dreamland Express and at the end he said remember the words meet me at the end of the rainbow and 6 months later he was gone I often wonder if he gave up on life.I've seen lots of singers live but no one as good as him.RIP John xx
was a fantastic night from one of the worlds greatest singer/songwriters
al sharp I've just found John after watching a TV film on part of his life. As I watched the end Of The film, and later his death, I thought the same as you. I've been researching him and I do think he committed suicide. He was in his favourite place, away from all his troubles, and that was it....
He never ever lost the talent he had. I do miss this voice the man who impacted my life through his music, his heart, and ability to help us all get in touch with what is most important. I started loving his music as a teen. I knew I had to get to Rocky Mountain High Colorado. I finally got to live there. There will not be another voice like this again...dare I say a man who could be vulnerable enough to share who he really was; not hiding behind fame.
Bless you for sharing such precious footage. I saw John at the London Palladium after queing for over 6 hours for the tickets. It was worth every moment. Loved the man and his music. He loved this planet so much and he had so much more to give.
I cannot thank you enough for putting this out there. Today is John's Birthday, and while thinking of him today is a given, I think of him all the time. From the time I was old enough to know what music was, this gentle, magnificent man was my idol. I am still grieving his death and celebrating his life. People like you who love him too, sharing things like this, will keep his memory alive for all of us. My children have learned to love him too. And now their children are learning about him too! My heart is heavy with him gone, but his music will live forever! Thank you sooooo much for sharing this with us... You are amazing. Tracy
