Hands down the best change was making the 41st division Zuko division after he saved their lives
When they did that my jaw dropped, I thought that added a HUGE amount of depth.
Dude you saw right I really like that change to be honest
That was so breathtaking. I really didn’t like how dark they made this overall but that was one of those moments where I was grateful for crying
I agreed on this one. And the actor who played lieutenant jee stands out. I noticed it when he first appeared I was curious why he was given that airtime. later we understand that it's because of that plot about the 41st division troops. and yet people are still calling this series bad,,, hayz
Same, I think this was a genius move!
I love that Gyatso told Aang that if he was there he would have just died. He was only 12 and only knew one of the four elements.
This was probably my 2nd favorite change to the story. I loved it too.
it's good closure, but I do also like how the original doesn't give us the closure, much like how we don't always get that in real life.
Water Benders - blood bending and spirit bending
Earth Benders - metal bending and lava bending
Fire Benders - lightning bending and combustion bending
Air Benders - flight and astral projection
Lava bending makes more sense for fire imo
@@e3vL1 nah magma is heated eqrth
Seismic sense and I still think that ice and crystal bending should technically be subbending, even if all water and earth benders can do it.
@@e3vL1lava is liquid rock, which is why it's an earth bending variant, as the primary element is earth.
@@e3vL1firebenders would only be able to cool the molten earth, not manipulate it
A missed opportunity to have Zuko say the word “honor” at least once per episode 😂
my hooooonor
@@CVargas202it was replaced with “My Fahdeerrrr”
I know this would never happen, but I would just love it if Zuko just walked out of a certain area for a scene and then the shot still lingers there for about 5 seconds, then Zuko pops his head back in, looks at us, and goes "Honor"
I don't think the show was perfect, it definitely had plenty of flaws. Yet, it still managed to capture the essence of the original series and it made me emotional throughout.
If anything, I think people should just direct some constructive criticism so we get an even better season 2 and 3, instead of just trashing it like some reviewers have been doing.
Totally agree with everything you said. So many flaws, but the essence was there and hopefully they learn from the mistakes and make book 2 and 3 a lot better. I still enjoyed it.
Does anyone notice Azula's fire bending? when her rage is getting to its peak her fire started to turn blue.
Lighting. It is an advanced level of fire bending
@@arezoiNo its not the lightning one... look at episode 5 . 20:18-20:20... her flames turned blue a seconds before mai stopped her from burning her trainer.
@arezoi do you know azula?
Why make that character change when her flame was always blue smh. If it ain’t broke don’t break it
@@weareart8519 Her flames were not always blue. She has regular-colored flames growing up.
I liked the intervention of Avatar Kyoshi THE MOST!!! She rocks!
Loved the change they made. If I wanted a direct 100% adaptation I’d just rewatch the animated series for the 30th time. The opening episode showing the events (and strength) of the air nomads was everything.
Moves to fast. One of the big elements that makes the original so good. It’s the feeling of being able to follow them on their journey. It’s needs to feel like they are going long way because they did. The episode with Jet, Boomie, and the Mechnist was too much all at once. They needed more time for that arc. It undercut the severity of what Jet was doing. I feel whiplashed by this show. Maybe that’s way it’s not a binge show. A couple more episodes just think could have helped with the pacing issues. It also feel like anng had no interest in learning the four elements. I feel like we completely skipped over that. By end of season one he supposed to be bending water. He has not even started training.
I agree a 10 or more episode season would have been better, but there's so much cgi in this show I think that would have pushed them way over budget.
Agreed 100%
Yall need to understand that this adaptation comes with restrictions the whole crew behind this show are fans of the original show, of course they would want to show every detail and give it time but they got a budget and time limits so stop with all that of course it would move fast its 8 episodes like c'mon season 2 if liked by many will be much longer and much more detailed
@tomimdawodu6808 then they should have split it. Have season 1 cover up to the winter solstice at rokus temple. Netflix likes shorter seasons so I doubt season 2 will be any longer. And now it has to cover waterbending, toph and earthbending along with the siege of ba sing se. Tall order
I LOVED the Aang training flashback. Where you could see on his face he was unsure of his power, and when it was unleashed, he almost blew his teachers/classmates off the mountain. The way Aang yelled “I’m sorry!!!” Gave me chills!!
The Zuko and Iroh relationship in Episodes 4 and 6 were by far my favorite parts of the show.
Definitely!
I love the binge format... Because a lot happens during the week and I'll forget what happened last week so I like the fact that I can just watch everything all at once.
I finished the season and me and my brother were very satisfied. He found it funny that Zuko never said a single time the word honor.
Thank goodness 😂
It seemed that they made Zuko’s core about not being weak rather than trying to gain his honor. I felt this was a significant character core that was changed from the original. Did this not bother you you? Did it go smoothly for you?
Zuko was pretty much an honorable man throughout the whole show. Just like in the animated show he really is just trying to gain the approval of his father and is gaslighted into thinking he lost his honor because he dared to confront him and will only be a worthy heir by fulfilling the fire lord's twisted wishes. @@glubysnot6152
Yess please do an episode breakdown! I think the addition to their ruthlessness makes sense since they committed a genocide but also the fact that they have resistance also humanizes the firenation too
Unless the story has been vastly change , it doesn’t make since to release the show weekly. most of the target audience already know how the story going to play out; and the people that have not watched the show can easily watch the original on Netflix .
That's a good point and I also think episode 1 is the weakest which may have turned some people off after just 1 episode.
I want more. I just want to pacing to slow down. So some so some of suspense or drama isn’t lost.
I just watched it and I’m glad it was a binge it would’ve been hated on by the haters for weeks otherwise
I totally agree. The first 2 episodes were pretty bad. If it was weekly it would have been torn apart. It gets better but this was a waste of 150 million dollars 💵
@@jeremyd5850the first two episodes were peak cinema. Incredible storytelling. 😲
@@toukdee yeah madam Webb and venom 2 cinema 🎦
she said she created her own moves....
@@jeremyd5850 First episode was SO GOOD what are you saying? Starting off with the siege on the air temple was such a good choice.
I can't go into my full thoughts because they are simply too long for this forum. But as a filmmaker and someone who worked at Netflix when this went into preproduction I can't believe how well realized this show is. I cried during the last episode. I've seen the animated OG series about 4 times and this really kept the spirit alive and you can tell the people making it really wanted to honor the source. A small part of me wanted them to use James Newton Howards music from the final battle of 'The Last Airbender' because its so good and did not deserve to be in that film that doesn't exist. If they do Tales From Ba Sing Se in the next season I will probably start a flood from crying. However, the ending was very rushed. This should have been a 10 episode season, and Aang didn't learn any waterbending? Odd creative choice but I see why they did it. 8/10
I demand that they get started working on season 2 right away!! They did a GREAT job!
The Roku segments were disappointing made him look like a goof with no serious bending. His meant to be close to aang but in this adaptation they are so distant.I feel asleep a couple of times.
Definitely agree. I don't know why Roku didn't come to Aang first
@@JayBayy1 Was mad they showed Kioyshi first, haha.
Yes he was directly involved with sozin, who started all of this so it makes sense he was important.
I agree! That was one of the flaws. I’m for making changes if it’s good, but I was missing Roku the whole time.
They spend the entire series trying to get to the northern water tribe in order to learn water bidding. Not even once did they train with the water bending master. Not even once. But yet katara still becomes a water bending master?? Why 😂😂 I don't think Aang water bended a single time in the entire series
Yeah that was terrible. Katara is supposed to be a prodigy but she didn't even train, it's insane
@emanthescripter1076 she's training with a scroll the whole time which I much preferred to the original where she's worse than aang and basically then masters water in between seasons. Personally I thought this series had a much better progression.
@mukkywater you're absolutely insane. It doesn't make sense ever for anyone to quickly become associated with an art form without any formal practice. Bending is basically martial arts, and to be good at martial arts you need a teacher. Katara became an amazing waterbender after being taught by pakku, but she was already a prodigy. Why did she constantly say she wanted to go to the north and learn waterbending and by the end of the series is only self taught? There is no pace, she literally was told how to feel about things and became better, that doesn't make sense
@@emanthescripter1076 in this series, they already establish that someone can be a prodigy, and even a master level prodigy, when Aang explains why he doesn't practice. So for Katara to be a prodigy and be self taught is feasible. Also, Aang not actually learning water bending because he thought he would just have an Avatar past life take over his body, was a great way of moving the story along without having to stop and train. As well as tie back to him not even wanting to be the Avatar.
@@emanthescripter1076I think it's always been established that benders can be naturally good at certain things
Katara pretty much masters water bending a toddler in the Korra flashbacks in season 1
And has mastered every thing else except air when the series begins
Aang was already a airbending master and had his master tattoos
It's also established Air bending comes easily to Aang
Aang by his own admission isn't even a great student
This show was so good I have to watch it again . The week by week would have been cool but it probably wouldn’t have been rewatchable to most people who would’ve gone online to break down each episode . Now we are forced to go back and rewatch it ourselves. I have a feeling it will be trending for while regardless as there’s still so much to unpack
I found myself really enjoying the show by just pretending that it was a very well done RUclips fan film. 😂
Maybe I should've done that 😅
I am SO sad I binged the whole thing 😭 I just loved it so much and I couldn't stop watching, BUT when you do that you really lose all sense of time and how much time the characters are on their journey.
I also LOVED Zuko & Iroh, maybe a little more than the animated show. That funeral scene with Iroh and Zuko nearly broke me. I never cry with shows and movies and suddenly I was like "what's this??? Tears???😂" i had to pause the scene to get myself back together.
lol it was just bad idk what people are watching. bad acting, bad changes, removing character development
@@Zoogor95 subjective.
@@justafidemyself it was just cashing in on the nostalgia
i binged this so fast as i could, not because it was captivating, but because of work and i fear i may not be able to continue week after week
Watch the first four episodes and I love it. They changed some things but as I look at the show as an adult. It’s really all about trauma and how to heal from it or let it consume you🤷🏾♂️
Why aren’t more people talking about that sozin admitted that without the comet the air nomads would have wiped the floor with them
I think because they were more, literally all the airbenders were there while not all firebenders were, so yeah, on another night with the same numbers they would've prevailed
I imagine they are saving the finer details of the different comets for the later seasons.
I just finished watching, it is now 3:11 a.m. in the Netherlands!! I could not STOP!!!!! I LOVED IT!!!!!!
I think the binge model is essential with this kind of show. Shows with similar fandoms that are adapting something have been eviscerated on social media on a week by week basis and gained negative traction because they’re being judged on what we haven’t seen yet and the audience doesn’t trust the studio. When viewed as a whole those criticisms often evaporate.
Another big thing. We already know how the story ends or goes, so stringing us along week to week isn't as suspenseful.
Seeing Kyoshi fight was insane. I had goosebumps all over. But my favorite scene was Iroh and Zuko at the funeral. Hearing Leaves from the vine played during the scene really broke me into tears. I relived my childhood watching this series. I really loved and every episode
I’m glad the show adds NEW story. We have the animated series to cherish, I’m glad the LA show dives deeper
TF wants a new story from a adaptation. If you wanted a new story then they should've made new avatar show.
Dives deeper where?
Showing the genocide, backstory of Zuko tying in with his crew, showing more results of the war@@emanthescripter1076
Then what's the point? If that's the plan then they should've just given us a sequel.
@@space1734 we’re gonna get a sequel film anyway?? I never thought a LA series based on the OG was necessary, but this one builds on it. We get to watch the air temple invasion (which was awesome), and deeper lore sprinkled in.
Just finished it and gotta say it was very enjoyable! It’s one of the better adaptations from recent years like one piece.
I Appreciated the changes, the cast embody the characters well and I would love to see more, come on we need to see Toph!💖
(Def better as a binge)
as a Avatar fan of 19 years, i loved this show!! u just have to be open to the changes and realize it’s a separate show, after the season 2 & 3 announcement today, i can’t wait to see the actors grow into their roles, the same way the stranger things actors did
Don’t worry. Book 2 is more earth focus.
I enjoyed it
Pretty 6/10
Some visuals and acting were very wooden
The acting was unbelievably bad with exception on a few characters. I am baffled that Grace likes this.
I was hopping for her to mention how bat the actin is from some of the extras but kore specially from the actress that plays Katara. She is terrible omg lol, sokka too but he is less worse than her😂😂
Yeah sadly i have to agree witch you about korea acting because it is not the best her lines were soo stif. The rest was beter. @@josem.3175

@@josem.3175 I thought the guy that played Sokka brought the cartoon character to life. To me he IS Sokka. I could have used a little bit more from his sister. But to me overall everyone did well.
9:56 This was BY FAR my favorite change to the story! It was brilliant, yes brand new to the series and really well done. I love it!
only two things I didn't like were Bumi revealing his identity to Aang straight away, and Azulas casting, the actress cant seem to pull off menacing.
I agree with the Azula casting the actress was not convincing
I disagree, I think Azusa just wasn’t given enough to do. In the animation she’s just as cold and stoic at first, then slowly reveals how unhinged she can be to he point where even her friends question her
Love it so much! Kyoshi scenes gave me chills. Cast was perfect! The reviews for it was so baffling 🤷🏻
I loved it! We die hard fans know the story. It's like, how many times do you have to see Batman's parents die to know that it's sad! The baseline is true to the series, and they were able to branch out to storylines that we have wanted to know! I loved it!!!
I loved the show but I really think they dropped the ball with Aang not learning any water bending in the first season D:
I think it’s fun enough and I did enjoy some of the changes they made but there’s a lot here I don’t like - like they didn’t really practice water bending or any other kinds of bending at all tbh, I don’t understand why we tried to do a season 2 episode like ‘secret tunnel’ here when it seemed that they didn’t have enough time for season 1 episodes (that is unless they don’t plan on going to Omashu in season 2 at all), I also didn’t really get why they’d have gone with aang when they didn’t have a friendship at all - that’s not to say there wasn’t stuff I liked I loved the Kyoshi (as I love her books) but felt like Roku got a bit shafted lol. Like a lot of stuff they added felt like it made the pacing feel even more rushed with a lot of the plot lines.
overall I’d give like 6 or 7/10
1080p video. Yaaaay finally !! Congrats on new laptop/pc.
I think with content creators putting forward their opinions , reactions and reviews, the talk can continue for a few weeks.
It night have been good for the show to have been divided into 2. In the animated series, there was a tone shift from the winter solstice episode where the significance of Sozen's comet and how short the time before Aang would have to face Ozai made for a compelling mid season finale. So even if it is not for 8 weeks, we could have extended the timeline to a month
Been hooked since episode 1. Def gonna do a rewatch over the weekend.
I loved that it was a binge, watched the entire thing. And I’m going to watch the entire season again 😃
I was only planning to watch the first episode for the day, and I ended up binging the whole thing.
I feel my pain from watching the avatar movie finally beginning to heal after all these years.
I'm all for more seasons!
I dont kow what the budget was but it looked increadibly.
$150m apparently
Bumi, Azula, Koh, Wan Shi Tong are amongst the characters with changes made to them that I absolutely hated.
I gotta agree with you. Ozi also seemed like her wanted his son back? Such foolishness. He cares nothing for that boy.
14:29 Why don’t we just throw the scroll away SINCE YOU’RE SO NATURALLY GIFTED?!!!
This SHOW made me cry e every episode and watched it in 3 days. The Last Airbender has come back. I just NEED MORE

Hey Grace I’m in the middle of episode 5 watching The show and it’s not as good as the animated show but I respect your opinion and love ur non spoiler review ❤
loved it i’m glad to hear you rave
The show satisfied me 100%. I loved binging it, but I do agree that a weekly release lets us savor it in smaller bites.
My personal favourite release model is bi weekly, it makes the wait between episodes not as long while still giving time for discussion, a lot of Korean dramas do this and I think it really works.
This show is a great appetizer to the REAL Avatar content we’re gonna be getting soon, like the third show about the earth bending Avatar!
It’ll be modern day or sci-fi if they did another show in the future… I think it’s better to keep the story in the medieval/feudal era.
@@willjackson5885I disagree just because there’s so much potential to tell stories all along their timeline. It doesn’t need to only be one thing, and I love Korra AND Aang’s eras
Hi Grace, in episode the storm from the animated series, the crew is shocked to learn of Zuko his banishment and how he stepped up to save the lives of the soldiers during the war meeting. No one indicated that they were part of that squadron of soldiers who were going to be sacrificed.
it was bad show with bad creative choices what can we really expect
I’m still watching right now on episode 5 and so far it’s pretty good thanks to your recommendation Grace ☺️

Binging a series is the magic of streaming. I never watch week to week shows until they fully drop. Just binged the Night County.
love your coverage grace, thank you!! i'm about halfway through the show and while i do have a number of issues with it, i still find myself rooting for it and liking it, and i'm really glad you're so enthusiastic about the show!! i want this show to have fans and i want good things for it
That prince Zuko episode was amazing. Him the dad and the uncle were too dope in the episode
Loved your info on the elements in the beginning. But you forgot to mention a few dope subbending types: combustion bending (fire), healing (water), spirit cleansing (water), and lavabending (earth)!
I definitely want more. The task of living up to the animation is so nearly impossible that people don't realize just how great they did to come this far.
I was so sad when I found out it was all released at once. This needed more breathing time. It runs a great risk of being forgotten in a binge format even if it's really good.
If I’m paying for a streaming service I want the entire season out! Weak by weak was supposed to be cable, “binged watching” because popular because it was streaming service main reason for existing. the hole point of subscription streaming was to watch entire shows with out adds, n consecutive. We don’t want streaming becoming cable, but more expensive. Grace just because as u have say u don’t like how streaming changed the industry n that theater n film companies couldn’t compete then they have to evolve n not return to the old.
A lot of streaming shows do week by week though. So that’s also a streaming thing
@@ikexbankai They just started doing it recently after GoT in HBO, but that was a cable channel app. It released online at the same time as there aired on cable, n had a subscription for on the go, just like every other channel like the CW, START, Showtime, SYFY, Disney Channel n Disney XD (before they merged them into Disney +), FX, TNT, ABC, E!, Bravo…. Many others individual channels that eventually they started merging n streaming services started to show up. Those streaming services are the one that often everything all at ones for a subscription other wise u could use ur cable tv provider information just to unlock what u play for already. The issue now, is money specifically with all the strikes since it destroyed residuals checks system for everyone single air time to monthly payments for infinite watches. That’s why we getting different levels of subscriptions now.

I'm so glad I was able to help you appreciate this show! :)
For me I didn’t mind the changes at all, i even loved the addition of the funeral scene but what i didn’t like is that it felt like boxchecking the animation storylines so they seemed rushed and incomplete

When I saw the water creature, I couldn't help but say GODZILLA GODZILLA!😂
A binge for this is better because we already know how the story goes
There’s a lot of people who haven’t seen the original. Plus there’s a lot of changes that mixes things up for OG fans
@@CJDM310 there’s more people that seen it then who haven’t. An it follows the same flow with slight changes. So doing a week by week when your main audience knows what’s going to generally happen would kill it
Really great review! I think I would have liked this to be a weekly release. I thought it was well made and yes there were some changes from the animated series, still a good show. I can’t wait for book 2. Who is princess you? Lol. It’s princess Yue. The correct pronunciation is needed.😊
Believe me, if this went weekly, fans are gonna tear this thing apart. It’s not that we want a carbon copy, but there were a lot that was changed but didn’t do anything to better the story. The show also seems to have a lack of a deeper understanding of the characters and some of their motivations. Why change them? It’s part of the characters’ growth. And as the limitations of the Volume became more and more apparent for the SW shows, it’s so obvious here. It made the show cheap. And no, Appa’s appearance is not enough. He’s basically part of the team but the budget restraints were so obvious. Even with bending. That’s why a lot of the fights had more hand to hand combat than bending. It’s really disappointing.
Sokka is very flat imo. If he had been more misogynistic at first, it would make his time at the other tribe more impactful since he would have agreed with their customs if it weren’t for Suki
Btw if they had done ANY practical effects for Appa it would have worked a lot better for me. Think Pete’s Dragon in the new remake
I think the weekly and binge discussion is interesting. Most people I've spoken to simply wait until a show has run its course to binge it, regardless. And sometimes in the waiting...they move on without having seen the show at all. Weekly model has become archaic especially with Netflix since they have so much (new) distracting content otherwise. While the other streamers do not. I haven't touched Prime since Reacher, Max since The Last of Us. And Disney+ now has The Bad Batch after that gap since Percy Jackson. Weekly is like waiting for your waiter to come to your table to take your order....at a buffet.
Really enjoyed this version of Avatar. Huge fan of the animated show. They did a great job. I liked how they combined some of the story elements from various animated series episodes and it make sense from a geo-location point of way to combine a few. Looking forward to the next 2 series and then Korra after that.
I think it came down to Neflix being a little skittish about what they had, or rather not knowing how well the show would be received by both the fan base and those who didn't know anything about the anime series. It's obvious now that it would have benefited more from a week to week release. It's also obvious that a second season is on the way. I just hope that now with the reception the series has gotten, that Neflix would go to a week to week release for subsequent seasons.
They really didnt plan this for weekly. I was missing the description of the 4 benders intro.
I hope Shyu the fire sage is still alive and makes another appearance in the coming seasons. He’s the only fire sage that still believes in Avatar Roku’s teachings
I'm sure Earth Kingdom will move up in rank once Toph is introduced
