- In this week's cosy rainy cottage garden vlog, I head to visit two garden centres to pick up some Spring bulbs and reflect on what worked well last Spring in the garden.
The first garden centre was Johnstown Garden Centre, and the second one was The Orchard Garden Centre in Celbridge.

Here is last years bulb video if you want some planting motivation. ruclips.net/video/dGrWYhNb_zk/видео.html wow, it’s so fun looking back at old videos and seeing the difference in a year. Thanks for sticking with me on my garden journey ❤
I’d love to have a mini series of planting along with you as I’m a total beginner with an empty garden and have no clue where to start !
I watched the video where you showed the layout pages for your book. Can't wait to see the finished book! ♥️
@@sheilan972 Hey Sheila, its now out, it came out last may xxxx
@@DaintyDiaries ♥️♥️♥️
Paint the wooden handles red and they will be easier to spot in the garden, so you will be less likely to lose them.
Now this! This a great tip ❤
I agree. I paint mine fluro pink so they are easily seen.
Genius!
I was going to suggest neon ribbon through the loop which helps to find them.
I came here to say that too-except bright neon yellow.
Audrey Hepburn one of my favorite actresses said “to plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow.” Essentially I reckon she means she believes in hope for a brighter future!
That is such a wonderful thought! I plant bulbs in pots because I live in AZ but when I lived in Northern climates I had a forest area behind the garden bed in the back of my home. I always dug up the bulbs every 2 years then planted them out there. Whatever made it made it. Some of them still grow 20 years later. We have visited a neighbor and since no walls or fences allowed in that neighborhood we can see that area clearly.
I grew my bulbs in pots the first year in my garage which was cold no frost or snow. I found lilies were the hardiest. My favorite Rubriums.
I no longer can garden due to health but I love watching you so TFS
Love how you are always thinking about the bees and biodiversity ❤❤❤
Oh thank God I am not the only one who loses garden gloves and small tools. Love your garden;
Your positivity and simple joy just makes my day. Thank you for sharing yourself with the community and specifically with ME. You matter, Catherine.
Awwwwww thanks Marie ❤
I agree with Marie, you are darling Catherine!!❤❤
Girl!! I love to see you getting a little philosophical, About gardening, no less. And especially, when drinking tea with a hedge hog mug! Sweet I am planting alliums, thanks to you. The bees thank you too 😀😀😀
Nothing better than walking around a Garden Center ❤
Hyacinth in pots are wonderful and easy to force into bloom they smell so sweet come in white, pink, and two blue tones... and tiny little grape Hyacinth come up early in spring.. live your garden videos 💕🤠
I’m so excited to add tons of hyacinths this year to my garden. Last year I bought only a couple dozen bulbs because I thought they had to be spaced very far apart according to the package directions. But when they grow up big and tall they started falling over. I read that planting them closer together keep that from happening. So I’m going to purchase lots of those. Thank you for the inspiration for other types of bulbs to try.
Planted my bulbs this week! I’ve felt really detached from my garden this year due to the fear of having to move but I am determined to make improvements in 2023. Knowing the bulbs are planted and on their way to cheer me up in springtime really helps with my seasonal anxiety. Sending love to everyone xx
Awww, that must be hard having uncertainty, but yes, a few Spring bulbs to look forward to always lift my spirits x
Lovely
I adore Snowdrops..reminds me of my grandmother's garden
I'll be planting lots soon when I get my new forever home 🏡🌻🌼💜
Grab yourself a lovely basket for your hand tools, gloves, twine, labels etc and ALWAYS put them back in it. Makes it easy to move around the garden ❤️✨
I love your choice of bulbs, Catherine! Such a lovely colour palette.🌸🌷🌺💛🧡💚
Thanks so much 😊
Today is a very nice day here. I planted most of my bulbs a few minutes ago and by the time I came in I saw your video popping up. That´s timing. 😅 I love tulips. 🌷 I did plant some pink muscari as well. We have the same taste. 😁You are so right: We plant some hope. Love from Germany 🤎🍁🍂🤎
English and Irish garden centres are the best, especially at Christmas!!! Oakland nursery in Ohio are pretty good but they need a cafe!! Lol ❤️❤️❤️
Thoughts of the day......
- red tinged Pelargonium leaves happen when the temperatures start to drop, also happens to strawberries
- so that I can still oil the wooden handles on hand tools I use bright electrical tape on the shaft of hand tools
- I have a kitchen cleaning caddy for carrying about the garden, one side I have hand tools, string, secateurs, labels and pens etc. the other side is handy for packets of seeds and bulbs
- blue bells and Muscari can both become quite invasive over time
I'm loving your garden journey👍
Good job
I just found your channel yesterday and have so far already found MANY ideas I´m going to try. And you´re such a breath of fresh air Catherine it´s an absolute joy watching your videos🌺🌻😊
Yay! Thank you Jo!
I love Freesias! So pretty and fragrant too!
The joy not only comes from seeing them flowering in your garden but the planning of your garden oh the thrill when you see it in the spring
Magic 🪄 ❤
Narcissus bulbs are an unsung hero! Tiny, white, delicate, and very fragrant perennial bulbs 💛 PS: PAINT HANDLE of little trowel a bright color, then a coat of clear glow-in-the-dark. You'll find it faster next year! Happy gardening 😁💜🌾🌿🍁🍃
omg glow in the dark!Yes
Oops! I should've been more clear: Narcissus Paperwhites. 💜 They act as a perennial when planted outside where I live in the U.S. But I adore the jaunty Daffodil, as well! Happy planting 🌿🌼
Loved seeing you have so much fun with Karen !
Aw we do love a good garden centre ramble ❤
Your bulb/ flower videos always get me excited about planting! 🤗 With the dull gray winter months ahead, it's so nice to have the hope of the spring colors to brighten our days 🌷⚘🌷⚘ Thanks Catherine 😁
You have amazing garden shops fabulous!
Alliums are my new favourite obsession! I enjoyed them so much this year so I have 40 more bulbs to plant for next year. Your bulb collection is beautiful 💐
Hi Catherine, really enjoyed your video love a visit to a garden centre, hubby and l went today to pick up some daffodil bulbs and had a look round because all the Christmas stuff was out in our local garden centre, saw a lantern and a lovely painting of a hare, did not buy them but regret not getting them today, so definitely another visit soon, l picked up a couple of pots of cyclem and have put them in a hanging basket, we also have some in our garden they are so pretty, l will have to look out for geranium Janette as this is my full name, got me all excited lol, happy bulb planting xx
Belle jardinerie 👌 ton jardin sera magnifique quand ça fleurira😍😘
I did exactly the same a couple of weeks ago...digging out a huge root from an old rose tree I used every tool I owned but when putting stuff away no trowel..... hmmm buried somewhere. Bought a new one and low and behold who should reappear but the lost one under all the earth I'd dug out ..opps!!
I planted some snake's head fritillary last year and they were pretty and although mine are in the ground they would look good in pots.
Thanks again for a lovely video x
Love your hedgehog mug.
I wanna said it two videos ago and then forgot....love your hair color
Love ur videos. We are having a very wet spring here in my bit of Australia. I spent an hour scratching about in my little veggie patches yday, planting more coriander seedlings, pulling out the spent marigolds, weeding and staking up my tomato triffids. It was bliss !
You r a joy to watch coming from Albuquerque New Mexico 🇺🇸
Yes I lose tools I have a habit of dropping them into the bucket I’m using for the weeds then the whole lot goes into the compost bin, last year I found my favourite secateurs in my compost, sadly well rusted and useless. Loved the video very nice garden centre , loved those brilliant autumn furnishings , but not in my budget, so nice to have a friend to share it with. But now I’m thinking spring bulbs so thanks for the inspiration.
Catherine, put some high viz tape around the handles of your small tools, we used this idea in our allotment cos we were always losing them too. Love your gardening diaries, they’re so inspiring ❤️ nanny Jean x
Lovely time enjoyed all the information on gardening 🦋
Thank you for your inspiration ❤️
You need a hook outside, near the front and back doors, on which you can hang your hand spade as you are entering the house. Also maybe paint the handles a bright colour...flourescent pink?
spray the handles a very bright color on all your little hand tools. You'll never lose them again.
I bought my first tulip bulbs year ago at Aldi ... They are still going strong 😁
I enjoyed your spring bulb buy Catherine, I have bought some with great intentions to plant so hopefully I will get around to it🤞
Oh yay!! And 25 minutes!
Yay, glad you enjoy the longer videos x
You look so lovely……special shopping day!
Thank you 🤗
Putting my spring bulbs in pots today. Daffodils, tulips and muscari. Planting hope. Exactly.
I do the same about the little spade and fork tools but I love a reason to have a new one and they aren't that expensive. When you find the old ones give 'em a good cleaning and then hang 'em in the greenhouse as a decoration or spare for next time you can't find the newest ones.
It's a rainy Fall day in Kentucky as well. Much love!
Think about it. You are planting life....🙏🏼
Hello Ireland
check out a wee plant auger to attach to you drill. Makes planting bulbs a breeze!
Or anything else as well. Take care!
Wow... check you out girl...some beauty's going to be joyful hen they all Bloom...you can get some Hi - Viz sticky tape...you can wrap around the handle...on the hand held tools ...they will glow ..🌟... 💐😉. See next week thanks for sharing
This was so lovely; thanks for taking us along! 🥰
Thanks for watching, so glad you enjoyed it x
Today is a wonderful day. Thanks for sharing.
I love your videos and am so glad I found your channel! Lily of the Valley is on my list of unsung hero’s for spring bulbs. I just adore it in a woodland garden. And smells lovely as well.
Aw glad you found me too x
You 2 are so funny. Love Love the bulbs that you got. So sweet. I have a bucket I take around with me in the garden to keep my kneeling pad and my smaller digging tools in and I just remember to put my things back. It’s great. Thank you so very much for sharing this with us. Appreciated.🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
I need a bucket like that ❤
Paint the handles of your spade a bright color: orange or yellow, I find it makes them easier to find.
My favourite video ❤
I have 2 terracotta pots and wasn't sure what to do with them...thanks for the bulb idea 🌷🌷🌷😁👍
I love listening and watching you and Blondie!!! Your garden is lovely!!❤❤❤❤
Aw thanks Chris ❤
Have you thought about getting scented geraniums for your greenhouse? I have a windowsill of rose scented pelargonium and use the leaves dried for tea, and make syrups that go great with gins! They smell amazing when you brush the leaves.
Do you have any peony’s growing? They’re my favorite flower, but I can’t grow them here in in southern/gulf coast Texas. I live vicariously through you with your beautiful flowers! We’ve been in a drought here, so I’m very jealous of your rain! We’re supposed to be getting some cooler weather and rain in the next few days and I’m overjoyed at the prospect! Thanks for bringing us with you and sharing in your adventure! ❤
Good idea, peonies will have the best fragrance. The neighbors will love you❤️🌸
So, this summer, my friend gifted me one, so I planted it back in June, so fingers crossed it might flower next season x
Eeekkkk I found the muscari flower here at our Home Depot!!!
yay!
I have never seen PINK muscari!!!!💗
Me too! Aren't they so cute x
Aaah snowdrops at home are the 1st flower that heralds the first stirrings of spring. I used to love picking small bunch and giving it to my mum...thank you for sharing 🍂🧡
Happens to me too. I have to have some tools in the front yard and some in the back yard. But then I lose something and I have to go to the front yard and grab the one I have there and visa versa
I never put the small hand tools away. One place I always put them is in one of the containers/plant pots. I can always find them this does the trick.
Every year when I'm emptying my compost bins I'm finding my missing tools, I even stopped wondering where did I put them, I know they will show up in spring time 😇
😅😅 I can relate
Can't wait to see all these beautiful flowers in your garden
Looks gorgeous x
Thank you! 😊
You had a great choice in those garden centers 👍 I had a tendency to look for my gloves and tools as well all the time 😂🤣 meanwhile it got better. I left one saw somewhere on the roof over winter and it got rusty and one time my pink watch ⌚️ got lost in the garden and I found it one year later. It was still working and didn't look too bad. Looking forward to see your spring flowers bloom 🌸🌷🌷🌷Have a nice week Catherine. Greetings Heidi 👩🌾💕
Gardening has been one of the best things about this year! It's brought me so much joy and just gladness seeing how beautiful the earth that God created is!
I love your bulb jaunt! I’m planning the ones that I want to plant this fall also! I used to forget my hand trowel, pruners, etc., in the weirdest places.🤦🏻♀️ Now, I have an old market basket that holds my gardening hand tools, my twine, scissors, plant markers, gloves, just everything I might need without having to stop and walk to the garden shed and back. Then when I go to my parent’s house or my sister’s house to work, I just grab my basket and I know everything is there ready to go! Have you ever tried lily of the valley? I love when mine come up and they smell heavenly!!! Thank you for taking us along on your field trip! 🌷🌷😉
Lilly of the valley
Nothing better than spring bulb shopping when the weather is so dreary outside! Those pink Muscari are gorgeous 😍
Aliums, Anenomes, Rannunculas & Fritillarias would be personal favourites! Roll on Spring & all the beautiful colours. Your flower beds are going to be gorgeous 😊
Lol lost trowels are probably in alot of gardens. Try storing the new tools in a hand basket that way you can carry the basket with you to garden. Much harder to lose a basket. You will see the basket and if empty where you left tools will be fresh in your mind 🤣❤
Hi Catherine, a lovely selection of bulb’s. Your garden is lovely. Have a nice week 💖😊
I love your spring bulb plantings. It is sooo hard to say no to the pretty spring bulbs. I bought over 100 bulbs my first haul, then 2 days ago I found the clearance rack for spring bulbs!! Half off, yes please, lol. I love daffodils, whites are my favorites, but I love the unusual colors also. I picked up tulips and alliums. If that wasn't enough I bought 5 hydrangeas, and ordered 4 more. But, I have been on a mission this year, to organize my garden better instead of everything willy-nilly. Thanks to you I have been watching Monty Don and found Carol Klein. I love that you say " this is how I garden, not how to garden". Those are the best and most inspirational garden videos to me.
Hello! Thank you for the interesting video. Spring should be very beautiful in your garden. Good luck to you👍🌻💙
Thank you, so glad you enjoyed this weeks video x
Always Look forward to your videos. I broke my foot so have more down time at the moment and you're a very nice distraction to the chaos in the world. Thank you for being so kind always. Your parents did a great job raising you. Kudos to you!
Agree with you on every count. Hope you foot heals soon.
Bless you , wishing you a fast recovery 🤗
Get well soon! Lots of rest and I wish you a speedy recovery ❤
Enjoy the continued distraction and hope your foot heals quickly. 🤗
Love it ❤
Yes, I now must go to a garden center for Snowdrops, Crocus and Pink Muscari. Thank you for the inspiration.🤍💗💜
I used to cycle from Naas out to Johnstown on that backroad as a teenager in the late 90s! What a memory to suddenly come back to me then.
Awww no way, it’s one of my fave roads ❤
I love watching you I’m trying to learn how to plant this year I started with a small bed
@@judyconway6149 Yes, start small, you will get hooked and you can always add to it later on x
@@DaintyDiaries especially when the Christmas stuff came out. Oh yeah, I knew how live as a teenager! 😂😂😂
Lovely selection of bulbs, can’t wait to see them. I’ve lost three trowels, I tidy one section up then move on and forget where I’ve left them, all the good ones are lost, I’ve a cheap crappy one now that bends, can’t lose that one😂
Hey Tracey, if you do to the garden playlist, you an see. the bulbs as this was filmed last autumn x
@@DaintyDiaries Will do, thank you x
I always paint my trowel and my little garden fork. With red paint. Makes it easier to find in the garden
Great tip Joan!
I watched this at work on my night shift and I HAD to make a mug of tea yours looked so good!
Oh I hope the night shift wasn't;t too long, enjoy x
Ur my happy place. Love love your videos. Hugs from Winnipeg
Yay! Thank you!
Can't wait to see the bulbs in the spring!! Love your videos!!
I agree with Carole, paint handles a bright colour. My grandfather painted the handles of my grandmother's tools. I lose gloves and hammers, eventually I find them. Hammers survive, gloves not so much. 🍁🙋♀️🎃
I am inspired to plant more bulbs this year.
Plant hope...aw love that..going bulb shopping later this week! Teeming down in Scotland and slug central! Xx
Aw, the rain is here now too, and the wind!
Thank you for a wonderful rainy day girl time!!! Happy planting!😊
Oh my tulips and other spring builds have lasted a very long time. And I always look for naturilzing ones.
Oh how I wish we had that kind of selection of plants and bulbs here in the states…sigh
Love the plant nurseries, always inspirational. Love your cute country garden and great bulb choices.
I always admire your positivity 😊
😊 thank you Eileen x
4 seasons in one day… Check out that song😃 you haven’t been to New Zealand!🌷🌷🌷
Found your book !! Yippee !! Can order thru Indigo Books!
oh yay, I have never heard of indigo books, but glad you were able to get a copy x
I love watching your posts...your always Cheerful and smiling and a joy to watch...
Thank you so much!
@@DaintyDiaries your welcome
I brought from Amazon a smaller rake to get in tight spaces. I opened the package and the rake was exactly what I wanted. This was months ago. I have no idea what I did with the rake!
Oh no!
For your errant trowel, might I suggest a permanent springy cord that could attach to your gardening apron via a carabiner? I’ve seen UK mudlarkers use them for when they’re scratching at the foreshore looking for treasure, and the cord always means they are attached to the tool and won’t leave it behind.
I was sitting in my chair thinking of my upcoming visit to Ireland which is way to short and thinking of you and book signings. I thought … I would bring you crocuses from the Netherlands as I didn’t see many in your garden last year. Low and behold I watched this video and you mentioned them.
Aw, I hope you have a lovely trip in Ireland Zoe, the weather is starting to turn, so plenty of layers x
I don't have any planned book signings, but I will be around Dublin in November signing some copies x
Always Love Sunday Tea with you Catherine ~
😊 I enjoyed buying bulbs and watching the weather during the day.
It was a warm 85° here in California and nights are getting down into the 60°'s sweater time!
See you Thursday!
