When my Father and Mother passed, I planted two gardens...on opposite sides of my home because they truly were "opposites" lol! Dad was a burly, louder-than-life personality who expected everyone to follow his commands. He reminded me of John Wayne, he loved Texas and wore western boots and hats and had a collection of hunting guns. His garden was rocky, with cactus, prickly plants, colorful wildflowers and I used his old cowboy boots as succulent planters. Mother was a gentle, soft-spoken and obedient wife. But of the two, mother had greater patience, a loving, tender heart and her own hidden strength. For her garden, I planted violets, buttercups, roses, irises, cosmos, bells of Ireland, foxglove, carnations and lilies. Each garden expressed their personalities and I talked to each of them, while maintaining "their" memory gardens.
Your desk looks wonderful. The pullouts on each side are great for putting something on that you are using, like resource books, extra notebooks, etc that you need the space for and to have out when working. Loved the gardens and your knowledge re bees. So interesting.
Catherine last Sunday, "Plant some seeds with me! They take 7-14 days to germinate". Catherine this Sunday, "I’ve been flipping these lids everyday (it’s day 6) and only have ONE sprout”! 🤣🤣 Girl, you crack me up! But I totally understand the frustration of waiting. Have a wonderful & blessed week 🤗💜🙏🏻!
With your garden nippers, wrap the handles with fluorescent tape so they will easily be seen in the gardens or the rubbish piles. I used to invariably throw at least one away each season. Fun to see your spring excitement.
Just want to tell you how inspiring your channel and your gentle enthusiasm is - every time I watch, I pause the video part way through to get up of my arse and accomplish something outside, haha. Today, when I saw you bought a new brush, I paused the video, went outside and washed a part of my house siding that has needed it for months. Thank you for the inspiration - my garden and house also thank you. :)
You are such a bundle of joy over the little things that you make me smile. You make me think of a child at Christmas time, just love watching you. Ive got to get back to my gardens the one for flowers and joy and the one to feed us both are fun to do love putting my hands in the dirt. 🌻🤗
Try turning your sweet peas containers so that the opening is facing your window. This will hold the heat better, longer. It really helped my seedlings!
My favorite are Delphiniums! Will have to try some of the ones you bought. Happy planting!🌸🪴 We have snow here so I am eagerly awaiting the Spring planting season. 😁 Yesterday, I picked up some Phlox, Nepeta, Astilbe and an interesting new bulb for me called, Hymenocallis Zwanenburg! 💕
Ohhhh Catherine, your videos make me so happy 😊. I really needed this today. Thank you so much for making me smile and being a bright spot in my day friend! 🙂
My favourite plant has been Statice - they flower in a range of colours, bees love them and they dry on the stem so you can cut them and you have a dried flower bouquet (lovely gift popped in a jar) or leave the last of them on the plant to have flowers right up til the weather turns.
It's your resident bird nerd again 😂 In Ireland, do you have birds with a song similar to the one playing with the music during the first part of this video? It sounds so much like our Wood Thrush in the eastern half of the US (one of my favorites, such a sound of summer). I had to look up what a "sleeper" was -- I often can figure out language differences by context, but this one stumped me! (We call them "railroad ties" where I live.) We have a few weeks before we can start thinking about gardening here (near Boston) so this week I'll be covering the water stain in the ceiling of one room-- thank you for the tips a couple weeks ago! Gave me the courage to tackle it. Thanks so much for sharing the seedling updates and robins singing!
A great tip for growing delphinium is to cut them all the way back to the base after they’re done with their first flush of blooms. Scary, I know… I tried this for the first time last year and they gave me a wonderful second flush of blooms! ❤
Guilty as charged! Replacing tools left in my garden for weeks used to be a huge, unnecessary expense for me! Now I paint the handles a bright red and they pop out at me when left behind. In your case I might suggest you paint them a bright pink color? Anything to spend less on tools and more on plants. Love your videos Catherine. ❤️
Here in Seacoast New Hampshire USA we have had dropping temps and a return of winter conditions after a period of unseasonable warmth . I’m envious you are able to be out in your garden!
I am so excited for you about your little seedlings, I could never even get that far. They are going to be gorgeous in your yard and smell so delightful! 🌸
Good day. Turn you milk cartons around to face the light and open the lids for a few hours each day. It will make them pop up. Fresh mulch in the raised beds look so pretty. Have a great weekend.
Is video set me off in the garden: it's been a mild day, so moved dried leaves to border, to hopefully mulch down, moved some pots around (bulbs sprouting) and had a general snip & tidy. 😊🌿✅
I love Erigeron I sowed from seed last year. The seeds are very tiny so I mixed them wit white sand and put them in a salt shaker and sprinkled them where I wanted them between flat slabs of granite stone sidewalk and steps. They came up but didn’t flower yet, hoping they will flower this year. I love your videos! ❤
I have faith in you to be able to sharpen your pruning shears. Wouldn’t you rather buy more plants than new shears😉😂 I half way thru the video, can hardly wait for you to take us to the garden center…too cold here in Kansas City. So I’ll tag along with you girls🥰 oh my heart is hurt…you bought the shears😂but you bought plants too👍🏻
Your garden videos might be my favorite thing ever! I totally have to thank you for introducing me to Gardener’s World! You and Monty have given me all I need to get started out in the garden. I’ve got my seeds going…including sweet peas and my head is spinning with ideas! My favorite cottage garden plants are snapdragons, foxglove, delphiniums and dahlias. Any recommendations for shorter front of the border plants are welcome! You’re the best, thank you again for what you do.❤
Love the excitement of going to the nursery! I'm just dreaming of all the potential. Your milk jug approach is so different from what I've seen here in the US. I see them taped around the middle and all lined up outside. For some people, even in the snow! I'm going to ask my local coffee shop for some milk jugs to try it out. Good luck with the new hand pruners!
It's so exciting when the little seedlings pop up! My favourite cottage garden flowers are dahlias and lavender, but I love the look of those teasels. Gardener's World was on fri just gone, but it was just showing highlights from last year...i was waiting for my jobs list 😂😂
Fabulous video Catherine. I'm about to show my sweet peas.... You've inspired me. If I struggle with illness, I always ensure that I get my sweet peas in. I'm going to grow veg this year too.... I only have limited space but will grow what I can. Thank you for telling us about Karen's channel... I hopped across and subscribed so it will be lovely to follow both of your garden journeys this year. 🤗xx
I’m trying my hand at winter sowing this year - I’m in zone 6. I’ve also plan on putting in Erigeron in my garden beds, both the pink and lilac varieties. The teazel plants you chose look like Sea Holly to me. They’ll be lovely in your garden.
When you showed your cherry blossoms, it made me think about an article I read once . Did you know trees blossom because of the birds singing? Its been scientifically proven that something to do with the vibration of the birds singing. Mother nature is fascinating.
Love your garden updates, it's pure happiness listening to a familiar Irish voice and your slang terms that I miss (ex Blanchie living in UK), love your enthusiasm, you never fail to make me smile!
the Dephinium( here in the Netherlands we call them stokrose) they give seeds on the end of bloomingseason, tiny real tiny tiny black seeds, take them uit and put them in a box till next year and you never have to buy them again. they are beautifull. plants for bees are; salvia, lavender, echinea, wildflowers mix, most of the flowers carry their seeds! You just have to take them and keep them till next Spring. Good luck Katherine.
Oh Catherine, I'm in the US so not sure what "Faffing about" the garden really means, but I loved that you said it (maybe muddling along without clear direction/ purpose?) I love cottage gardens (except roses...the thorns just aren't for me), shasta daisies, bee balm (super bee friendly) and hummingbird mint (agastache) are my favs. Oh and daylillies! I just love how easy they are to grow and then they multiply! Then you have more to give to gardener friends. Happy Gardeners World watching.
Love that you’ve got something growing on on your window side! Enjoy looking around garden centres. I’ve just acquired an allotment and put my shed up today so I will be watching closely to see what tips you can continue to offer!! Many thanks ☺️
I love to see Erigeron in my favorite EU/UK gardens. It's also called fleabane here in the states, what a shame huh.?! I'm looking forward to watching Monty too, thank goodness for YT.
Mulching makes a garden look so much nicer, that garden centre looks amazing Catherine, I love how they have everything colour coordinated makes it so much easier when planning your garden, love the new plants, and Mother Nature is a wonderful thing, tfs x Julie
Oh how you get my fingers to itching for playing in the soil. Ugh! Still 3 ft of snow on the ground in northern lower Michigan u.s.a. brrr. I just can't hardly wait. Love the pretty ants. I'll be looking for the cottage one, my favorite.
Handy idea for the greenhouse, use little tea light candles for some heat, you'd be surprised how much heat can gather quickly just from small candles! 😊
Was so glad to get a notification of your video today. Was having a bad day till you came on and also my grandson who is 7 came up and serenaded me on my guitar. Can't wait till the weather warms up here enough so I can get out and work on my. Much love from Canada have a great day.
The mulch looks grand, so satisfying to see the transformation 🤗, the garden plants all set out in colours….I could spend loads 😂🤣If I had somewhere to plant them and enjoy them . My Mom in law has once again said no 😢to me planting and looking after her garden, so I might plant some more out at our flat and keep my fingers crossed that our delightful neighbour does not pull them up this year , on his way home from the pub …… The 2 laurels I planted nearly 2 years ago are the only ones that have not been touched, maybe they have good strong roots so he can’t pull them out . I have been getting my garden fix from you for a few years now so I will keeping enjoying you garden if that’s ok. Take care x
I just sowed some teasel seeds, along with 7 other types of wildflowers . I'm doing them as winter sowing in milk jugs left outside as they are perennial and won't flower this year. (The teasels do take a long time to germinate. )
My seedlings for coleous have sprouted. I may have to keep them in the house I love the colors of the ones I chose. Thank you for sharing Catherine you always make my day. God bless!
I just love watching your garden come to life. I can't wait until I get a garden of my own. Hoping to start this year now that I have my yard all fenced in....still chilly in where I live yet but Spring is coming. 🙂
I enjoy your enthusiasm on gardening. I feel the same way. I started some cool weather veggies today and started a few flowers. Gardening brings so much joy...😊 Have a wonderful week.
@DaintyDiaries flowers/gladiolus and poppies. Veggies/sugar daddy peas, garden peas, 2 types of lettuce, 2 types of mustard greens, bok choy, and collard greens. I plan on starting more seeds tomorrow. Happy gardening..
Just popped out to the garden centre bc you and Karen have been inspiring me to start my seeds. I won't be able to plant till maybe April (in Quebec) but I can start some flowers and peppers inside😊I've never had much luck with them but you both made me want to try sweet peas again. I found one called Canada Day. I'm hoping it's a sign🥰
I am getting so excited for spring 🌱. Go seeds! I'll have to love through you for a few more months. Oh how I wish I could plant perennials now. My ground is so frozen 😭
I love watching your videos this one reminds me of the movie "The Secret Garden". I can't wait to get out there and start the outdoor spring clean up way too chilly to get outside just yet. Here we are still having odd weather. Cold but no snow and warm and wind and warmer weather. You can tell it is just around the corner though it is staying lighter longer.
So the eryngium is a variety of Sea Holly, typically used in cottage gardens and wonderful as a cut flower so sure you'll love it. Isn't it fab when we get a sunny day to potter outdoors again, my window boxes have crocus and flag iris. I bought some snowdrops and tete a tete to make a live spring wreath you wrap the bulbs in moss and pin to the wreath. Exciting to see your gemination success in milk cartons, look forward to next time🌱😉
I’m so excited to potter in this new garden. When we moved in last June I plopped all my flowers and plants in willy nilly just to get them in. Now I’ve a little better idea where the sun sits mostly but can’t wait for it to be luscious and green and colorful!! ❤. Love your video as always 😊
I have quite a few Erigeron, otherwise known as Seaside Daisy here in Australia. They are hardy, tough doers and are prolific self seeders, quite often sprouting out of cracks in concrete etc. Very pretty and look lovely hanging over my rock wall.
I have 3 varieties of eryngium in one bed, adjacent to my septic bed. The blue/purple colour is delightful and the bees and butterflies enjoy them. Clean up in the fall/spring can be a bit hazardous because of the spiny tops and stems but so worth it. They are hardy and self propagate.
Hiya Catherine. Another lovely video. Can you tell me what potting compost you use. Do you get different stuff for different plants? Thanks for your hard work and prompt posting. Never disappoint us. Xx
Think Gardeners World returns Fri 17th March 🙌 such a great show and Monty isint too bad either 😉 Those Erigeron daisies are lovely they spread out so great for ground cover. Echinechea are beautiful perennials, love Stachys (Lambs ears) check them out great little plant and they are drought tolerant too!!
I always look forward to all of your videos. For me planting has to wait till mid May for the wait of no more frosting. I only have a patio from my apartment but I have my list of what I will be planting and puting in my flower pots, looking forward to it.
Hey everyone, Karen's channel is www.youtube.com/@Lovelygirliebits
One of the best videos she ever did was when she put this face mask on and popped out making this hilarious silly face ❤. 😂
Thanks so much for the shout out bridie! Finally catching up on my RUclips viewing!!

What a nice memorial to your parents.
I love this. ❤️

It is indeed Joan!! Spring is near and the longer evenings are looming 😍
Oh that sounds fab that they poke out of walls x
I have 3 varieties of eryngium in one bed, adjacent to my septic bed. The blue/purple colour is delightful and the bees and butterflies enjoy them. Clean up in the fall/spring can be a bit hazardous because of the spiny tops and stems but so worth it. They are hardy and self propagate.
It’s so great to see you gardening! Very inspiring though we can’t start here yet. But I will be ready when it’s time! Love from Indiana!
Rose branches r called canes - just letting u know since u said u weren’t sure what to call them. I have tons of roses. Happy gardening! 💐🌻🌸
Hiya Catherine. Another lovely video. Can you tell me what potting compost you use. Do you get different stuff for different plants? Thanks for your hard work and prompt posting. Never disappoint us. Xx
Very fun and gratifying video. It is fun when the seeds start growing. Take care.
I know right Tammy 😍😍

Hi Catherine. My favorite cottage garden flowers are foxglove and delphinium! And all of the others really😊♥️
I always look forward to all of your videos. For me planting has to wait till mid May for the wait of no more frosting. I only have a patio from my apartment but I have my list of what I will be planting and puting in my flower pots, looking forward to it.
There are 4 special recap gardeners world on over the next few week's 😀
Spray vinegar and a dish scrubber for algae on wood worked for me.
