- In this week's cottage garden vlog, I am prepping the garden before I head away on a trip. I also cut back a hardy geranium hard to see if I will get a second flush. Also, I planted some vegetable plugs, I planted cabbage and sprouts!

Catherine loved your video some great tips. One thing I use in my garden beds, pots & hanging baskets is a 1 or 2 litre bottle buried into the soil or peat moss. Some holes made all over the bottle for feeding. Plant with the lid pointing upwards so you can fill with water anytime not just when ur away. Hope this is useful to you. Looking forward to your next video.
This is great tip Cathy! Thanks for sharing 🥰
I do this with 1 litre cartoons (from orange juice). It works well.
I've used old wine bottles in my raised beds. I've spray-painted the bottom of some of them with gold paint and then just pushed them into the soil with the bottom up - I think it adds a bit of a sculptural element to my little garden here in Denmark 🇩🇰 😊
This is a great topic Catherine. It is always heart breaking to come back after being away and seeing your plants suffering, especially after putting so much work into it. I have to say I've always struggled to fit a garden day before the holiday. Time before going away is always so hectic. Well done for being so organised.
I can only imagine having a cup of tea or a cheeky cocktail in your garden. It must be a total treat to sit back and enjoy the fruits of your labour. Can't wait to see what is next!🐞💮🌻
My mom's sister (my aunt) died several years ago and my mom cut a large, dried allium head out of my aunt's garden and has used it as her Christmas tree star topper ever since. She cherishes it.
Hi Catherine, I usually ask a neighbor to water and bring in the mail when we are out of town during the summer. I pick up a thank you gift in appreciation for the help. I too try to clean house before we leave so when we arrive back home I am not faced with chores when I have a pile of laundry now to do.
Oh my goodness! I know how you feel! I liked the comment of using water bottles. And the fresh sheets to come home to. Totally me! You said you are already back. Hope you had a wonderful time. See you in the next one. 😀
Wine bottles are a cute and good way to water your garden for a week or so! Just flip over an empty one to make the impression into the soil, remove the bottle, fill it up with water, then stick it back into your indentation. This way you can use different bottle sizes for different plants. Good luck!
Hi Catherine, lovely to watch you in the garden , everything grows so big I have snap dragons in my garden I enjoy being in the garden as well, you are very special lady , have a great time away . I will be wait to watch the next video. 😀🙋♀️
Empty , clean 2 ltrr. Pop bottles filled with water and turned upside down pushed into soil will help with keeping your soil moist. As the ground gets dry the bottle will slowly be drawn from the bottle.😊
I stumbled on your garden transformation video today, amazing, I am actually tired from watching! You are doing such a beautiful job! Hello from Boston, MA USA
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed it x
Your wildlife garden is looking lush. So pretty. Love the bug houses as well.
Thanks Michelle 🥰
You are such a pleasure to watch. Always cheerful! 🌻❤️
Love the Irish saying I'll burst ya🤣hope ye had a lovely holiday Catherine, I've my nephew n family coming from kerry weekend, can't wait as not seen him for 11 yrs n now he's a dad, it's mad I'm getting old xx
Top vidéo bravo 😉
Magnifique.
A bientôt 👍
Nice!! To wake up to this inspirational video! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 Thank you for sharing 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Why thank you x 🥰
Catherine, some bugs encohrage flowers to open, and some flowers have to have bugs on them so they can open up to bloom.
Depending on how many pots, get strips of cotton or cotton rope, and put one end in the plants, and one end in a bucket of water. It will wick moisture from the bucket to the plants.
Catherine, being outside is so peaceful. 🌱
So peaceful 🙏🏼
Never ask a non-gardener to do gardener things. Love that.
Hope you had a great trip with your friends and the wedding was a blast! Love that the hedgehog is back!
I’m so happy to see they are back 🦔🙏🏼
Hope you had a great time away and your garden was happy on your return. I like coming home to a clean house and my own bed too. Hugs for Blondie and Toffee. Hi from Australia xx
Have a wonderful trip with your friends!! Exciting!
Do you know how awesome you are...I so much appreciate your video content and tips. I wish I had a little sister like you. 🦋🌞🌺
Awwwe that is so kind x 🥰
when I go away I always get someone to water the garden. And to look after the house 🏠 😍.
It gives such a peace of mind doesn’t it x
Hydrangea flowers also dry beautifully. I stand them in an inch or so of water adding glycerin to the water. Helps keep the dried heads pliable, rather than going all flaky messy. 🎉😊😊
You are just so inspiring! Love watching your creative adventures.
Sooo peaceful always enjoy Ur garden videos 💗💗💗 Ms.Blondie such a cutie💓
I love the idea of planting more native plants ... I live in northern california in zone 9 so I planted some yarrow in a grow bag and this week was the first time I didn't have to water it every 2 days but I recently learned about ollas from RUclips: epic gardening for keeping the watering going and the plants just drink as necessary. can't wait to try it out 😁 love your bug hotels in the garden
I love watching yr videos, u always cheer me up such a lovely down 2 earth girl ,love the way u keep yr garden. Best wishes Cheryl x
Thank you so much 😊
Always enjoy
your vibes. Have a beautiful get away with your coworkers love!
Hello there Catherine,i love your ideas. I tried to plant sunflowers,,calendula, sweet peas they never ever showed up. I bought marigold, which i planted....the snails had their joy eating them within a few days 😢. I also planted seeds of nasturdium, the leaves are here, but they didn't show any flowers. I think it had alot to do wirh the draught we had,or have. Many of my strawberries have gone crispy.
We did go on a short holiday, but only for 4 days or 7 days. That was 6 and 7 years ago. I couldn't afford it these days. I would not stay away longer that's for sure, especially with the heat we have this year. I do like the tip with the bottle someone gave (upside down) anyhow.
In our country they are eaten. They should be fried in a frying pan without oil without anything, stirring often. Stir, try, already fried or not, opening the peel. When they are ready, they are easily opened by pressing your fingers. And open the black peel. There's a white seed inside. It's edible. Maybe I wrote with mistakes. I use Google translator.
Fantastic. Have an amazing trip. Thank you so very much for sharing this with us.🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
The Heage hog so cute what cute home
love your garden, your sunflowers looked lovely and your dalias.
I love your garden. You do such a good job with it and have really good taste.
Would love to see a specific video on your shade plants and how they do. I live in a lot of shade so I’ve been looking for plants that will thrive
hey, on my Instagram, I have a reel with the shade plants and in the description I listed the names of them. I hope it helps x
Just so relaxing watching your vids. I hope you enjoyed your holiday. Im doing a month in Queensland myself at the moment. Warm and sunny in winter.
Have a wonderful time...🥰
Some bottles of wine filled with water turned upside down and stuck in pots helps water them.
Dainty I can relate to this. I had to go and house sit for a week and left my fiancee incharge of my garden. Big mistake. Came back to an aphid infestation, dead flowers and dehydrated sunflowers 😆
I finally received your book and I am so excited. I pre-ordered the book back in June. I was starting to wonder if I will ever get it. Now here it is! It had to come to Canada.
We also have an automatic drip set up for our garden hose. It runs for 5 minutes every day. And can be set through an app on your phone.
Hope you had a wonderful time away!
Same girl! We vacation on the off season because we can not leave our property in the summer!
The garden is looking beautiful and you have gained in confidence since your first tentative steps
The flowers at the back of the garden are Astrantia major. Instead of buying more plants now they are maturing it is possible to split them to increase your stock of plants, it helps keep the plants healthy and you get free plants 👍👍
Your sprouts - when planting any brassica they need to be planted in really firmly (especially in your very 'fluffy' raised bed soil also they will probably need staking as they get taller to stop them falling over.
Enjoy your trip 😊😊
Garden is looking so good. Love the shade garden corner. So exciting to hear that your hedgehog is back❣️
Love your garden so much it’s beautiful xx
Hope your time away was fun. Great video. Would love to hear more about you bug houses and your Bee Air B&B. Thanks!
The plants in your garden are looking so beautiful and healthy. Have a nice vacation with your friends.
Catherine we hope you had a good time on your trip and I was going to ask you what do you do with Blondie when you go away but you answered the question in the video.💚❤
Have a safe trip Ms. Catherine and enjoy 🤗
Good Morning, I always love your videos, you can always spray paint the allium heads while they are still in the ground* I have seen people do that.
Oooh great tip!
I love watching your garden videos!! 🌻🌈❤🦔
Hope you had a great time away. I have my first ever sunflower about to open, I'm so excited. 🙄🤣
Yay! ☀️🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻
Lovely video, hope you had a great few days away 😀
Hope you had really good time away and your garden faired well.
You prepping everything so thoroughly, love the snapdragons and sunflowers.
Your shady corner though now shines brightly, it's now a true showcase and quite the setting for the hedgehog palace. 💕
Awwww thanks Martina 🥰
Lucky you, growing your Christmas dinner! I wish....I'm in frigid zone 5...😔
Fabulous Garden 🪴
So nice of you x
I didn’t know that was where the sunflower seeds where x
Have a safe trip👍❤x
Lovely flowers already, Catherine ! Enjoy your trip and enjoy them afterwards!
Really enjoy when you post a new video. This one is also a delight to see. Hope your trip went well for you and your friends. Love from Canada 🇨🇦❤️♥️🌼🌼🥀
So l💖vely!!
Look up ‘wicking garden’…. Safe travels & good luck!
I,have sprayed them too used them at my daughters wedding and Christmas some people even poke them in the borders for something to look at in winter I'm not sure the birds are keen on the seeds Sarah Raven sells them very expensive or she did do
Enjoy the wedding and thanks for the info on sunflowers.
Love the video, did you know the tip of planting and watering every day for a week and then every be second day for a week and then every third day. My exbother in law, Head gardener at a very exclusive New Zealand Lodge told me this is the ways to go for successful planting, thought this might be helpful.ttfn.
Hope the three amigos had a good time and that Blondie didn't miss you too much, cats are pretty independent, our Biscuit is fine so long as she gets fed often, she doesn't seem to bother too much but love to see us back 😊
Yea Blondie likes some company so I always make sure she had a minder, one that brushes her with the two tangle teasers 😆
Hi Catherine :)
The one you were struggling to remember was Astrantia Major :)
I learned a lot from you today about gardening. Thank you for that!
I love your comment about not having a non-garden person care for your garden while you are gone. It reminded me of the time that my friend had gone away for a few days and asked me to take care of her cat. At that time I was a dog person. I would come over once a day and give fresh food and water, but the kitty litter seemed to not have anything in it. Remember, I was used to dogs and everyone can see their business. I later learned from my daughter-in-law, who some may call, "a crazy cat lady" (she currently has 3 cats), that cats cover up their business. I called my friend years later and apologized! She never said anything to me aboutit!!!
😆😆😆😆😆 oh no, but how were you to know 🤷🏻♀️ and you apologied x
Oh those dead heads, the birds will love it. I leave the cones up and the finches go through those seeds like crazy. Have fun at the wedding! When my neighbors from Ireland had their daughters wedding it was a blast! Do you do that line dance kind of dance, starts on either end of the floor, meets in the middle, everyone twirled around and then back again. So much fun! Have a blast! 💝
Just ordered your book! So looking forward to it. 💕
Hope you like it! Thanks so much for ordering it x
Check out slowterm watering using up side down bottles with small holes in the bottle cap 🍀
And in the raised beds a couple of buckets with small holes in, to drip feed whilst you're away. I only leave them there when I'm away or in the heat waves (one's coming to England this week!). I hope you had a good time away x
Just received my book yesterday. I am really loving it. Good job Catherine you really nailed it. Thank you for all the inspirations. Will start making gifts for my people. I will start with the pencil case for my daughter who is a teacher. Will give it to her for her birthday (as part of he gifts). Will make a few for different things for her. Would like to make the soaps for x-mas etc.
I'm impressed with you can load and lupins; my have been dessimated by the slugs.
I live in a very hot climate, so I must water my pots daily in hottest time of the year. I would be very scared to leave them!! I love your sunflowers, so I might have to create a section of my garden for them next year! We love all our birds, and watch them bathing and playing in our bird bath outside our breakfast nook window!❤
Would love the diy bug hut video :)
"I am past me in the future" LOVE IT!! Hope your trip was amazing. Suzette
Enjoy your time away with your friends. You are so kind not only worrying about Blondie but your plants as well. It all looks lovely. Cheeky thumbs up.
Your garden looks so tidy after you do your magic!! Enjoy your time away!!’🌺🌸🌷🌻🌼🌹
Love your garden! Enjoy your trip!
Thanks Julie x
Your garden is so stunning! Have a lovely holiday! x
Catherine, your grass is looking so lush right now!💚
I enjoy your videos Catherine, so wonderful and relaxing. Enjoy your Wedding Holiday in Spain 🙌
I just recently started putting all of my garden beds on drip irrigation and it is a total game changer.. no timers yet but that will come when I get every bed set up .. btw We live in Northwestern, New Jersey in the U.S and we have had a very hot and dry summer this year.
I’d just buy a simple hose timer and a drip hose and then put it round your garden beds and set the timer for maybe half an hour a day. Good luck and have fun on your holiday!
We roast sunflower on cookies sheets
beautiful garden! We're so dry it's really hard to keep a productive garden in San Diego...but I keep trying!!
Your woodland area looks so nice. Hope you enjoyed your time in Spain.
Your garden is so beautiful! I hope you enjoyed your vacation with your friends.
Thanks Jessie x 🥰
Have fun away!! You can buy a timer that goes onto the tap nub ( water spout) which will turn your water on at your selected time. You could set out a sprinkler that could be turned on by this which would water almost everything.
Your dahlias are gorgeous! It's been a good year for them in Michigan, too. I also change my sheets before we leave on a trip. Nice to come home to. I also use bottles and glass bulbs of water in any pots that may need more water while we're gone. Have fun on your tip!
Catherine I can’t believe you didn’t already know to plant in groups of 3,5,7s! Our girl Laura never plants 1 of anything! 😆
Love ya from Northern Utah !
I am the same Catherine, only went away 4 days, 3 nights but had to get someone in to water all the pots and hanging baskets. Know what you mean about being self employed. Hope you had a great trip. By the way I have grass envy, our current drought continues, not a green blade of grass to be seen ☹️ 💖
Aw hopefully you get some rain soon, we now have a dry spell beginning so my grass woth be on the turn once again x
Looking like a little fairy with all this alliums on your shoulder. Thanks.
Hi Catherine! I'm a kindred travel spirit too - I only travel off season (Spring and Fall) - less people then. Excited to hear you are going to walk the Camino. Have you seen the 2010 movie "The Way" with Martin Sheen (filmed on the Camino)? Near the end are amazing scenes in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. Just breathtaking. Looking forward to hearing more about your upcoming trip!
Aw that movie made me cry 🥰
Love your personality!
❤️ those Sunflowers 🌻 Hope you had a great time at the wedding!
Hope you had a lovely holiday, the garden is looking good. I hope the cabbage white butterfly caterpillars haven’t eaten your cabbages while you were away, good idea to put a fine net over them. Looking forward to your next video.😘
In the summer, I put saucers under my pots, they catch the extra water that drains through. It cuts down on watering. If i am going away i collect the smaller pots together and leave them in a shallow tray of water, it doesnt hurt them to stand in water for a while, better than drying out.
Have a terrific vacation.
Dainty, it cracks me up that your apron always end up on your side. You need to make yourself a better apron, one of those that criss crosses and made of sturdier fabric and maybe some pockets for tools.
I like wearing it to the side because when I stoop when gardening it is not in the way 👍🏼
