Labour market after 2020 is tough as hell. I already experienced the same situation in Italy right after completing my law studies in 2017. Nobody would reply to my applications, a lot of job ad were fake, experience was required for entry level positions and it was basically impossible to find a job and also internships. I left my country for Czech Republic in 2019 but in 2020 pamdemic started and I lost my job. Then I moved to Poland and came back to Czech Republic in 2022 but nothing is the same since 2020. In 2022 the Czech Republic, whose population is of 10 million inhabitants, took in 500,000 ukrainian refugees and this had a huge impact on cost of living and especially renting as finding a flat became impossible, while finding tenants willing to pay a lot of money even for a room is a piece of cake now. And now, in 2024, my company is doing layoffs worldwide, career advancement is stuck, we only hire contractors, we closed positions and we went from throwing money in the air in 2022 over events and management positions that were not really needed to cut budget for events and positions that are not needed. We are also outsourcing services to India with a negative impact on service level. I thought things were better in countries like Oman but then I found this video. Not sure what to do next but if things won’t improve soon I will probably leave Europe as in here cost of living and especially rent cost is too high. The places you rent are small, not soundprooof and pricy. Buying a flat is impossible, career progression hard and being laid off relatively easy. So, let’s see but honestly I think right now the EU is doing really bad and its rulers sitting in Bruxelles are out of touch.
I feel for you. I'm lucky because I'm now retired but I don't envy you or others trying to find work now. Before the pandemic and Brexit things were very different for me as a Brit. Not so now. We couldn't even get a job in Europe now without a visa. The problem with finding work as an expat in Oman now, is the government's Omanisation drive. Good luck on your ventures. USA or Canada would be my recommendation.
@@ChasingTheSun1967 Among the two I prefer Canada but I feel like also they have the same issues as the other western nations. I feel more positive about middle east, Asia or Australia maybe. Europe is my home but I have a bad feeling about its future. And yes, life is tough nowadays so I envy you and people that joined the workforce back when UK and Europe where great and full of opportunities and I think you did well retiring in 2024 and moving to south east Asia.
That's a shame to hear about the decline of how things are in Oman, I spent a few years as a teenager growing up and found it to be a magical place with nice locals.
Hi Greg. The locals are still nice and friendly but the high SIN tax is killing the entertainment business. I also see a lot of businesses closing regularly. You're right, it's a shame.
The lockdowns had a terrible effect all over the world. We haven't returned to normal. A lot is on Zoom now with much less personal interaction. I think under the circumstances you were lucky you kept your job. Some people were trapped overseas and unable to return home for a long time - without any resources. Also given your age, there would have been no work in the UK so I'd say you did not fare poorly and your employer was not unreasonable. Good luck with your retired life.
I hate this trend. Now even psychologists are offering their services via videocall. And people seems to be ok with that, but then if you want to know if for ecample you have adhd they tell you they can only diagnose those things face to face. Hard to do that via zoom. Language courses via zoom, eveything via zoom. Doing something via zoom is less enjoyable, makes me less engaged and distracted. Even at work I get less distracted on F2F meetings than in zoom meetings. If you want me not to listen to you, just do a zoom meeting. Sometimes zoom and ither similar tools are needed but in other cases we should resume meeting F2F, it is just better.

Congratulations on your retirement! Well wishes to you and yours!
Thanks Scott
A new chapter for you and it seems like a great one.
It is sad. However many people retired live in Oman they prefer Oman instead their countries.

@@ChasingTheSun1967 wow, of all places I'd never have thought businesses would be going under so much in Oman.
Are you the bad guy from Dune? Is that Arrakis in the thumbnail?
😂
For the record: Oman is more than twice the size of England.
Thanks. Looks same size know map.
@@ChasingTheSun1967 Good luck in the Philippines😎

Yes but most of the oil companies returned any pay cuts back to previous levels. From what I heard anyway. Thanks for the wishes 👍
