    I always thought it was interesting how NEW Vita games were always priced lower to compete with DS/3DS prices, even though they were cutting edge handheld games at the time. Then when Nintendo releases the Switch they go straight for the $60 price point.

    • @YSN
      @YSN  3 года назад +73

      My guess is that Sony matched the lower pricing in order to be competitive. By the time the Switch came around there wasn't really any handheld competition for Nintendo, so I figure they probably went expensive with their games just because they thought it was an easy way to make money.

      Nintendo Switch is considered a home console and not a handheld. Plus, the Nintendo Switch, when in handheld mode, is the most powerful handheld at this time, so even if it was solely a handheld device, the games would probably be priced higher. Maybe not $60 high, but probably $49.99 high as the standard.

    20 years ago a new video game was like a new car, it depreciated immensely the second you own it. But now if you keep the game and contents in pristine condition it can hold 70% of its value right away, and begin to gain in value in 2-3 years. The hobby can about pay for itself now with a little time and effort to resell the stuff you've played, further down the line.

    On PC I am perfectly fine with "digital only" games. The main reason is due to crack groups and pirates which honestly helps out with anti-DRM preservation (If a digital service would go down). Sure there is something deeply satisfying with the physical releases of the golden days, big boxes, extensive manuals, extras like maps, stickers etc.... Nowadays it's often just a cheap plastic box, housing a disc or a cartridge and if you are lucky you get a flyer-style manual or ad... This is why my excitement over physical has died out over the years. It doesn't feel very exciting to open the box of games anymore.

    For me, It doesn't matter if physical games costs more than digital. Having a physical library of games is better than having a digital list. Buying physical games sometimes gives you free goodies like posters, mini soundtracks, trading cards, etc... Physical copies also gives you advantage because you can resell it no matter how old that game is. Lastly, nothing can beat the feeling whenever you're entering a local game store.

They are the ones that better understand their own market. if they reduce 50% all their games' price, that doesn't necessarily mean that they will sell 50% more to end up in the same profit. It could be less or it could be more. If their average price is 60 dollars on new big games that means that that is the optimal price attending to their maths. They don't put prices randomly, they experiment with different prices to seek the best profit, not more sales, which makes perfect sense. If they could sell one single game that cost all other games together, they will do it, and it would be even more profitable for them since they don't have to comercialize and distribute millions of cartdriges. Srry for my english.

    • @bern9642
      @bern9642 3 года назад +2

      @@publiovirgilio2238 that's not necessarily true. Not at all. Sony reduce the prices of the games all the time and for the past decade, they have been making the most profit from game sales.
      Even currently, Nintendo systems are selling faster and they are topping sales charts but Sony is still recording more profit. I believe that's because although Nintendo's hot recent games are selling very well & topping the charts, their older titles where they refuse to reduce prices aren't selling at all. Sony reducing the prices of almost all their older games means all those are always selling moderately well. Add all that up and Sony ends up making more money.
      Sometimes, it's just a culture the company adopts. Nintendo are old fashioned and they won't change because it kinda works for them. Sometimes, they make massive losses (ex Wii U era) but overall they can still compete with Sony and Microsoft.

    The situation with 2nd party Switch games is odd to me because during the Wii U era, lots of scalpers bought up Devil's Third copies, hoping to sell them at a high profit down the line through ebay. But then Nintendo, seeing a demand, increased their stock of it (Which was pretty funny because it hurt scalper bank accounts). And that was for a game that was frankly mediocre. Are they expensive? I have picked up 56 games on cartridge since getting my switch in December of last year, including a good number of first-party titles and no shovelware. You're right that some 3rd party titles can be pricey used, but between dekudeals, hunting on ebay, and a bit of patience I have been able to get almost everything for below MSRP, sometimes well below. The first-party titles have been among the more expensive for me, and Wonder Boy in Monster World. I got a copy for my girlfriend in 2019 for $35 and ended up paying $50 for my own copy a few months ago.
    I completely agree with the worry about digital (I have been gaming long enough to have lost access to a couple libraries now... Direct2Drive and ImpulseDriven), it's part of what convinced me to go for a Switch after skipping consoles last generation. Also, yes... maybe things will settle down post-pandemic, but last year absolutely expolded the values of all collectables and brought MANY new collectors into the fold. This is true in everything from video games to comic books, dolls, action figures, you name it. It seems like a lot of people are catching the collecting/speculating bug. As a longtime collector it worries me a bit, a similar hype bubble happened around comics in the early 1990s, and after the bubble popped the industry never really recovered. I don't think video games will share a similar fate... but the collectors market might.

      The cherry on top of this pile of shit is that the Switch is still an inferior machine. Even with its reduced graphical settings compared to other consoles and PC's, it still struggles HARD to render smoothly, at least with Breath of the Wild, which I finally found at a local secondhand store. Like, just trying to render Korok Forest in pristine, calm weather makes the system cry in agony. once the storms come in, I've accepted just doing as little as possible, and in some cases, just find somewhere safe to hunker down in, switch HDMI inputs to my PC, and just dick around for like 5 or 10 minutes, waiting for the weather to clear up so the game can run again.
      The reason Nintendo always used out-of-date, obsolete hardware was because it was cheaper, and by using cheaper hardware, they could keep costs down, and sell their systems for cheaper than their competitors who were all vying for the latest and greatest hardware. It's how when the competition was breaking the $500 USD price point, Nintendo could still offer a full gaming experience for $250 USD. Now though, they're still using obsolete hardware, but are trying to nickel and dime every last cent from the customer. Fuck that, I got everything secondhand, and I'll be getting those Amiibo cards or tokens for $20, rather than pay $120 a pop for some stupid paperweight that's pricewalling the in-game content on the game I already paid for.
      Nintendo may have existed for over a century, but I have to wonder if I might live to see them go out of business, or at least become a third party developer like what happened to Sega.
      Sony, Microsoft, and even Valve all do what Nintendon't.

    People complaining about paying $60 for Skyward sword when I dropped over $200 to get Shantae and the Pirate's curse, and over $150 on Monster Boy
    Xenoblade Chronicles is still crazy

    i like having the physical copies of the games. especially roaming every store you can find for that one game. like with the old DS or an old ps

    Same question should be asked about the PlayStation 5 games. I know some people are going to defend this by saying they're not as expensive but that's because the games are either pre-owned or on sale.

    One of the catridges was "Peach Ball" and it was Rated M. I was confused and searched it up. Hmmmm.

    Handheld(&home console) + Nintendo + Cartridges + 'hot' system + fewer physically produced (now that they partly rely on digital sales) = expensive

    What I want to know is why they are allowed to waste so much plastic for the switch cases, surely there should be rules against such unnecessary plastic

    I only have 3 physical Switch games, and one was was a gift. They are just way too expensive! For instance, Mario Kart 8 is still around 50 bucks, when it is SEVEN YEARS OLD!

    Do think the high prices somehow are bushing people to buy digital games?

    I went to Walmart last week (July 22), and the store has ZERO Switch games.
    No new ones, no old ones, no discount ones.
    Even the crapiest games that nobody ever buys, out of stock.
    Doesn't make any sense.
