RUclips is my time machine. I can live in any era I choose. Tonight, Barbra is 20 years old and I am in the audience!! She is beyond fabulous, beyond talented and beyond beautiful. And, thus, will she always be.
My father played in the orchestra on the Garry Moore show. The whole family went to the show often. I was in the audience for this show (about 10 or 11 years old) and remember rising star Barbara singing from the balcony at the taping. You can't see it from the taping, but she really was on a balcony about 10 feet off the stage level. This is great seeing this again after all these years.
Ekkie101-. Wow! You were so lucky to have been in the audience to see Barbra just starting out. That's cool to hear she was actually singing from a balcony ten feet above the stage. I saw her at her 1994 MGM Concert. Lol. But I was in the balcony way more then ten feet up. Saw a lot of other stars near the front of the stage.
I remember early Barbra. I was a little kid, but even then, knew she was something special. This is when I loved her the most - straight outta Brooklyn and raw as hell!
I was born in 62, years later I found a album that my mom had. At the young age of about 8,I felt I found someone that was singing for me. Every time I was abused and hurt I escaped to this lady who helped me forget all the sadness. I still turn the music up and tune out the hurt. Thanks babs
Barbra's voice was so fresh and powerful here. Don't get me wrong; she still sounds good today. However, there's something about her style during this period that is just so natural. Love this performance.
Barbra....as a Young Woman, was an Artistic Original. Incredibly, Beautifully Unique. By the 70s she was becoming more of typical, mainstream Singer. Thankfully..we have her incredibly Brilliant Early years to refer back to. 👂💖
To think Barbra was just 19 when she sang here. So talented and such a wonderful presence. Can't think of anyone of a similar age nowadays who can match her.
I MISS THOSE DAYS SOOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH! THIS IS THE GREAT ENTERTAINMENT THAT WAS! BARBRA IS BRILLIANT BEYOND WORDS! WHAT A THRILL TO HEAR HER AS A YOUNGSTER AGAIN! THANKS FOR POSTING!
The ancient myth comes to life! A fully formed goddess emerges from the head of Zeus and takes her place instantly in the Pantheon of Immortals. Streisand, the complete and polished artist from the very beginning of her career. Incredible.
Barbra is one of my fav artist of all time. thank u SOOO much for uploading this rare and miraculously brilliant footage of her. she IS an inspiration to me - a day without barbra is like a day without sunshine. so grateful!
NEVER WILL SHE BE MATCHED. WE ARE LUCKY THAT WE WERE AROUND DURING THE DAYS WHEN HER VOICE HAD THE POWER OF A HURRICANE. THOUGH HER VOICE HAS DIMINISHED MY MEMORIES OF THAT FEARLESS POWERHOUSE OF A VOICE THE LIKES OF WHICH WE HAD NOT SEEN/HEARD SINCE GARLAND ARE INDESTRUCTABLE. I SIMPLY ADORE HER!!!!
She is only 19 years old here. And she has such great presence. And her phrasing is so fantastic. She was top notch from the start. When she was young, she was more interested in being an actress than a singer.
You know Beyoncé has a voice like this, but her songs are so juvenile and unimaginative you’d never guess how gifted she really is! Barbra is the Eternal Goddess of American song!
Yes, she is that good, and yes, a lot of her stuff can be juvenile, but I think Lemonade was brilliant and groundbreaking in its own way. Also, loved her rendition of "The Way We Were" at the Kennedy Center tribute to Barbra!
I think Beyoncé has indeed an amazing and powerful voice, although quite different than Barbra's. And while perhaps some of Bey's songs may be considered juvenile, her body of work has certainly evolved and become more creative, as someone already stated in the comments. Surprisingly, when it comes to Barbra, we sometimes forget that she also has songs that could fit into the rather "juvenile" category (i.e. "Guava Jelly" or "Splish Splash"). These songs are far from her best, IMHO, though I still like to listen to them from time to time 😉
My favorite Streisand album has always been the second Barbra Streisand album, where she really belts out those songs, and I think she’s grown. My second favorite Streisand album is Streisand Superman where she adds rock into her repertoire in a very sexy way. Jumping up to 2018 when Walls was released and even Rolling Stone praised it! I can’t wait to hear the new recording that she’s working on!
This was the original arrangement from the show "Fantastics" a big hit then and ran for 42 years. It was the sound of the day and meant to do that. Especially as she had the voice that could not be drowned out.
She has the natural gift of immediately making an audience feel comfortable. A HUGE natural ability as a performer. Let's all think what we were doing at 19.... LOL
This was one of her first prime-time appearances on network television. And when Keefe Brasselle temporarily replaced Garry in the summer of 1963, his first telecast also featured Barbara as a guest star...
I miss this Barbra Streisand. The energy and heat she uses here to sing this great Harold Arlen song is worth ten of the "look at me" numbers in her movies.
@GinaMarie1982 when her first couple of albums came out in the early 60's barbra's voice & aura was something no one had ever encountered before. her music took us to a new place we had never experienced, & it was wonderful. i don't know if she ever realized just how special her voice & persona was & would become. to this day those albums strike an uncompromising memory & mood in me that'll never go away. like judy garland, barbra is a one of a kind woman blessed with more talent imaginable.
@zzyyxxo No, and there never will be...she is the greatest star I had the pleasure to be around at the Oscars several times... I have never seen such respect for any star in all my years in Hollywood...she is Magicical to be in her presence... ~MM~
Love seeing these "discovery" videos of Barbra. Witnessing the eruption of the world's newest volcano. Garry Moore didn't even pronounce "Streisand" correctly.
catholicpriest1--I heartily agree. If certain four-letter words were eliminated from the English language, many people would be rendered mute. Shameful.
WHOA! thank you soo much for sharing this clip! I have Barbra's Just For the Record CD, with this song on it but I've never seen the vid. Is this available to buy anywhere?
As always, I love a good full chest singin' legend... but I prefer the 1965 taped version of this, it better employs La Streisand's use of vocal dynamic...
Oh my God!Amazing! She is the greatest there ever was and ever will be.You can talk Fitzgerald,Garland, and Vaughn all you want but can they do this?No they can't.They cannot do what Barbra does. She is the best.
Actually, her mixed belts are inferior here. She's pretty much going into a falsetto head voice. Losing power at the end. Garland & Barbara McNair HIT those notes in full sustained belts WITH vibrato. Garland's version is unbeatable. I suspect Eydie Gorme would best Streisand on this number too. What Streisand did have was a unique exciting sense of timing and phrasing. She is known for her beautiful legato and breath support. That she has. But not the vocal power or range of the other singers I've mentioned. Streisand had to soar her high notes off softly with a buzzy viibrato or growl them out for power. Laurie Beecham and Linda Eder continually bested her on the Funny Girl Songs. Sarah Vaughan is a whole other kind of singer. Streisand had a beautiful tone to her voice, but not here at 19 years old. This is a bit amateurish, to be honest. Impressive in her confidence and raw ability.
@@laineybrooke668 Wow nice to talk to someone who loves Barbra too. I wonder if you my age too? I'm 27, and most of my friends are kpop fans and here I am listening to Barbra. I love her.
Rachel Green I’m 15 lol, but I’m glad someone else likes her as much as I do! I feel like not a lot of people listen to her music anymore. Which makes me really sad. She’s truly amazing! 🖤
@@laineybrooke668 She rocked the eras from 60s 70s 80s 90s even in 2000s she's timeless! I'm trying to influence my friends and introduce Barbra. She's just someone that young girls like us should look up to.
gabsylv, Some dioceses have gone "broke". Several have declared bankrupcy. I have given my whole life to the service of the Church. I was just making a statement about the way our culture is going. Thank God that the Catholic Church stands up for the sanctity of human life and the sacredness of sexuality. The gift of sexuality is treated by our culture as a commodity and human persons are treated as mere objects.
What a gem. Back when singers actually sang, without autotune or feedback, and voices that were musical instruments themselves.
Well said and well put !

Beautifully expressed...

S Robin Dittrich I'm sure that was great. She's such a great artist.
That’s amazing you were there - what a great memory
I love Barbara but also wish I could have seen her duet with Judy Garland live.

Reading her memoir now…stopping along the way and searching her performances here on utube. What a unique talent.
pure talent..to this day can not be matched.
her voice is astounding.
I agree.
I don't think this girl ever sang a bad note in her life!
True! She's 78 now and she still can sing really good! It's 2020
I don’t think she COULD sing a bad note
Just the way she opens those French doors.....the woman just had/has such great style and unique talent. BUTTAH!!!!
Exactly!!!

This woman's voice is a miracle.
I am so thankful for her gift. She is amazing.

At 19, she was already incredible. So thankful I've been able to enjoy her singing and acting for so many years.

I get it.
dear god...that was awesome.
entrancing voice
Early Barbra is the best.
She is so comfortable, so relaxed and having so much fun.
When I was a kid my dad listened to Barba often. She is the original Jenny from the block. A girl from Brooklyn that is. Super talent.
To think Barbra was just 19 when she sang here. So talented and such a wonderful presence. Can't think of anyone of a similar age nowadays who can match her.
Not today but years ago many young talents
Love her end note. And her dramatic speech.
The “dramatic speech” sounded like her about ten years later in her movie On a Clear Day…
She reached her peak at 19 or 20 and really hasn't lost much since.
Perfect voice and she knows how to use it. Plus, as an actress she gives the song a dramatic dimension. Marvellous.
I MISS THOSE DAYS SOOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH! THIS IS THE GREAT ENTERTAINMENT THAT WAS! BARBRA IS BRILLIANT BEYOND WORDS! WHAT A THRILL TO HEAR HER AS A YOUNGSTER AGAIN! THANKS FOR POSTING!
Wow and that was even before she perfected her style
She is adoreable, as always :D
Had to comment again. That ending. She was only 19? Un-flippin'-believable.
Brilliant performance.
Mph!! They broke the mold with this model. FANTASTIC!!
Ms. Barbra sings DIVINELY!

She was and still is magic. Love how he first put the emphasis on SAND - shows you how early this is in her career.
I just remember that what I initially loved about her--besides her obvious talent and moxie--was her original unpretentiousness.
She is only 19 years old here. And she has such great presence. And her phrasing is so fantastic. She was top notch from the start. When she was young, she was more interested in being an actress than a singer.
So gifted as ever !
1961 and still laughed my ass off after that ending joke. God love you barbara.
fucking fabulous. she was 20 years old people....the epitome of "natural born talent". i am fan for life --- love you barbra!!
All the 20 year old stars of today can learn a lot from Barbra, this is how you start out a career!
18 years old, and already had that talent. No one like her ever ❤
GOAT
Streisand was the shit! Stunning last note!
I just watched this for the first time and thought, "that last note!"
The Voice of an Angel !
You know Beyoncé has a voice like this, but her songs are so juvenile and unimaginative you’d never guess how gifted she really is! Barbra is the Eternal Goddess of American song!
The word Beyonce doesn't even belong in the same sentence as Barbra Streisand.
Yes, she is that good, and yes, a lot of her stuff can be juvenile, but I think Lemonade was brilliant and groundbreaking in its own way. Also, loved her rendition of "The Way We Were" at the Kennedy Center tribute to Barbra!

Beyonce has a great voice, but it's not in the same league as Streisand's. Not many are tough.

a somewhat rare high headvoice note from her at the end -- beautiful! :)

Amazingly beautiful
She has the natural gift of immediately making an audience feel comfortable. A HUGE natural ability as a performer. Let's all think what we were doing at 19.... LOL
This is when Streisand was truly unique and exciting. So different and compelling. Now she just sort of does herself.

Exquisite heat emanating from this little fire bomb in cat’s eye mascara. 😻

@TheJessiePineapple no, she was indeed 20. The show was filmed on May 29, 1962.
I agree with you on this but don't forget to ad Sarah Vaughn and Lena Horne
Look at the other video of her singing this - it EVEN BETTER - much better as she's more herself.
No Lie. It was fun!
This is Barbra at her best: in the 60's, before she got involved w/Jon Peters, before she felt she had to be "perfect".
