- The Ventures are an American instrumental rock band, formed in 1958 in Tacoma, Washington, by Don Wilson and Bob Bogle.
The band, a quartet for most of its existence, helped to popularize the electric guitar in the United States and across the world during the 1960s. While their popularity in the United States waned in the 1970s, the group remains especially revered in Japan, where they tour regularly to this day. The classic lineup of the band consisted of Wilson (rhythm guitar), Bogle (initially lead guitar, switched to bass), Nokie Edwards (initially bass, switched to lead guitar), and Mel Taylor (drums).
Their first wide-release single, "Walk, Don't Run", brought international fame to the group, and is often cited as one of the top songs ever recorded for guitar.
In the 1960s and early 1970s, 38 of the band's albums charted in the US, ranking them as the 6th best album chart performer during the 1960s, and the band had 14 singles in the Billboard Hot 100.
With over 100 million records sold, the Ventures are the best-selling instrumental band of all time.
The Ventures have had an enduring impact on the development of music worldwide. The band was among the first to employ and popularize fuzz and flanging guitar effects, concept albums, and twelve-string guitars in rock music. Their instrumental virtuosity, innovation, and unique sound influenced many musicians and bands, earning the group the moniker "The Band that Launched a Thousand Bands".
Their recording of "Walk, Don't Run" was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame for its lasting impact, and in 2008 the group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Thank you Don, Bob, Nokie and Mel. I play guitar because of you. I had some work done on my house and I took the guys to lunch. I had a Ventures CD playing in my car. After a few minutes, all these young guys said - who is that - man, is that good. I proudly said - that's The Ventures.
I form a rock band back in 65 and my brother Joe and classmate Nick loved playing The songs from the Ventures. Being the Drummer I loved that fantastic sound of the Ventures Beautiful Instruméntals.
Don Wilson will forever be remembered.

The Ventures are my all time favorite group. So sad to hear Don Wilson the last remaining original member has passed. Don’s daughter Staci Wilson directed a wonderful movie The Ventures: Stars on Guitars and everyone should watch it if they love the Ventures.

Just how many really great instrumentals Don Wilson made, I do not know, but at one tome I had every thing they ever recorded.

Back in the mid 70’s, the band I was in followed the Venture’s venue on stage. I had the pleasure of meeting the Venture’s and specifically enjoyed talking with Don Wilson, regarding how their music molded my career in music, never imagining I would be sharing the same stage with a band I idolized in the ‘60s.
With the previous passing of Dick Dale Mel Taylor, Bob Bogle, Nookie Edwards and now Don Wilson, I look back and reminisce of those times and how fortunate I was to grow up in an era of extremely talented individuals.
Started to learn to play guitar when I was 9 the ventures songs were the first songs my brother tried to teach me.
Will always love the ventures music R.I.P Don

The best instrumental band in the world that was the originator of 1,000 bands. Now the last member of The Ventures, its founding guitarist Don Wilson has passed away on Saturday, January 22, 2022. He was the last member of this successful band. Rest in peace. My deepest condolences to your daughter Staci Layne Wilson and her entire family.

I just learned about the passing of Don. Me and my elder brother grew-up in Bombay listening to The Ventures for the past sixty years, from our teen years. I was fortunate to attend two of their concerts, back in 1992 and then again in 2012. I can never forget seeing them in action! I owe a lot to them for making my journey through life enjoyable! RIP Don, The Ventures will live for ever!
We were stationed in Japan when The Ventures came out with Walk Don't Run in the early 60's. We had two tours in Japan at Tachikawa Air Base and the other at Yokota Air Base. My brother and I bought every Ventures album that came out. I went back in 1981 and while in Japan, I went to see The Ventures play with the original lineup of players including Mel Taylor and Nokie Edwards. The Ventures were seen as gods in Japan as their concerts were always sold out. The Ventures are still so popular there that many Japanese bands play Ventures music. Don Wilson was probably the most popular Venture in Japan because he interacted with the Japanese audiences along with Mel Taylor. I will always have a special place in my heart for The Ventures as they were a big part of my childhood and continue to this day. I credit The Ventures for getting me interested and pursuing my studies in guitar. Thank you Ventures for the wonderful music and impacting so many lives. Go rest in peace now. You all did a job well done. God Bless.
It's so sad that we lost Don Wilson and he will greatly be missed by all of us who remember him for the days with the Ventures and I never forgotten about him at all

It is really sad to hear the news of Don's passing. I met the Ventures in Regina in 2009. It was a great joy chatting with them. I was hooked on the Ventures since 1960 and to this day.
