    We've been building our cabin in the woods for over a year, and after countless attempts and many failures, we're going to try the thing that almost broke us the first time: the dreaded dry wall! And something that many of you may not realize is that through all the setbacks and difficulties, one thing that has helped us keep going is YOUR belief in our ability to succeed! Believe it or not, after a long week of challenges and bumps in the road, reading your useful tips, tricks and encouragement helps us more than you know! So we dusted ourselves off and decided to tackle the drywall again, only this time we were armed with your advice and helpful knowledge--that we probably should have listened to the first time!     Our Journey! How did we get here?
    In the winter of 2019 we moved in to our self built van full time to begin living, working and travelling Canada. We quickly fell in love with chasing our dreams of adventuring off the beaten path, living off grid and being self sustaining. We drove our van thousands of miles through various countries-Canada, USA, Mexico & Guatemala. All of which we documented here on our channel, be sure to check that out! After many years on the open road we found ourselves 15 acres of remote woods on the East Coast of Canada where we are building a homestead and renovating our fully off the grid cabin. We are diving into this chapter of our lives in no experience, we're so happy we can bring you all along as we learn to do it all with our own two hands.       Rent a drywall lift. They will show u how to use it. Put textured paint on it, that will hide a lot.

      Its too late for my opion so i will watch to the end but i know how to do it and i plastered and drywallled for a living hi girls okay one thing about mudding and taping manfacture joints mesh and but joints paper and thin coats butt joint dont leave any excess under the tape usualy do butt joint in two steps plaster the joint scrape all excess off let dry then next day tape using very little mud a really let that dry a lite scraping with the scraper and another coat of thin mud and use a wide scraper dry sand and butt should be ready for prime those factory edges for me are fiber tape coat of mudd remember its not about covering with a thick coat i dry as you doo the second coat scrape with scraper then apply let dry do a light sanding and for the next coat of mud use a wider trowel and thin as possible apply another coatof mud dry sand primer look for the mistake fix sand primer should be ready for paint do all your painting in as bright area as possible good luck when i do this i sand but once i dont like sand so i do everything not to and thin coats is the answer sorry for the movie but 35 yrs of of working speaking

    That job would have taken me about an hour. 20 minutes to measure. 20 minutes to find a contractor. 20 minutes to watch another Vanwives video. Good job girls.

    I've was a drywall man for over 30 years. I'm not going to tell you how long it would have taken me and one of my guys. I will just encourage you to keep going, you got this. When taping keep your mud thinner and put enough on your joint so when you wipe it down you don't get air bubbles. When doing your finish coats since your beginners apply multiple thin layers on until you achieve a flat surface. Proud of you girls. I love watching you and the fact you will try anything.

      Ok, I'd just use Trusscore. It's lighter, flexible to a degree and quicker to do, which is essential since I'm typically a one woman crew. Lol

    A few tips. Wash your tools completely. Thin your mud, a little thinner with each coat. Dampen your paper tape when applying. Remember, thin you win when applying mud. Sanding is the enemy Try not to leave high clumps but if you do,knock them off with your knife before applying your next coat. After you prime look for rough areas and give them one more very fine coat, then reprime

      Yes, on getting the paper tape a bit damp before placing over the joint. It will help it stick/bed into the bottom layer of mud.

    Couple tricks I’ve discovered over the years. 1 When hanging drywall…. Remember it’s NOT finished carpentry, it doesn’t have to fit like a glove. Gaps are okay muddying will fill in. 2. If you wet the paper tape before putting it up it helps a ton, the dry paper sucks the moisture out of the mud and can leave bubbles/blisters. 3. When mudding less is more, adding 3-4 layers over a couple days is best, biggest mistake most make is trying to build it to fast. Trust me it’s way easier, faster and ends up with better results. You two are killing it, you’ve already accomplished way harder projects than drywall. Maybe not as frustrating haha That’s why so many people HATE hanging drywall, myself included.

      I am not sure after speaking with so many people, does anyone like drywalling. We are sure there must be a few. Lol yes this is not the most difficult project but up there in the frustration dept. 🌞🐾

    The fact your kept going was a testament to your determination to do as much as you can by yourselves. Plus when you have finished you can say we did all this ourselves.     Awe you two can do anything. You both show so much respect for one another it is just a beautiful thing. You make people like me feel that we can do anything. I'm curious have you two ever really thought about how you have influenced so many of us? And in my opinion how you have most probably shown quite a few people that your relationship is just the same as any other relationship. And in some ways it is more beautiful.     My husband ALWAYS comes up behind me when I turn you guys on and says "oh, you have the beautiful, intelligent girls on" and then he stands there and watches. You guys are SO willing to try anything.....and make mistakes....like we all do. But you guys learn from your mistakes....because that's what I think mistakes are for. That's how we are supposed to learn. The fact that you guys may feel defeated but still keep trying is such a testimony to your character! We both think you guys are SO AWESOME! Love all 4 of you.

      PS: Drywall is one thing I wouldn’t attempt by myself. There are some things worth the money & applying the drywall mud is one of those things I’ve tried and realized it’s worth the money to bring someone in that are real artist doing finish work.

    While I'm a nobody in the grand scheme of things this episode really made me think about a couple of quotes from US President John F. Kennedy, I think they fit absolutely perfectly. "Every accomplishment starts with the decision to try" after that ran through my mind "We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard.” You two definitely embody those words. You took the risk to start your lives together, to film it, to share it! You share the real stuff, the ups and downs. But you have accomplished so much! The Sunday notification of a new video posted is I'm sure the highlight of lots of people's weeks. Keep being awesome and kicking butt!!

    Wetting the tape before you embed it in the joint compound can help eliminate troublesome bubbles that show up after the joint dries. Keep a bucket of water nearby and quickly run each piece of tape through it before applying the tape to the wall.

    I am not too shy to say that I messed up 3 sheets of dry wall once, I dropped one and screwed through the wrong holes or the others. I am not meant to interact with dry wall what so ever! However, there is one great blessing that came from this, none of my friends or family calls me when a dry wall project pops up. They don't even think about it. I love you both so much for not giving up!! See you next Sunday!!!

    Sheetrocking simply technical 6:52 you have to have experience, with the experience you, will gain skills. The Valley in between the two sheetrocks, is the tricky part of hanging sheetrock, it's called plastering, all in the hand, But wait until you do the corner...

    When I saw you on the phone calling drywallers I gasped and said "No, you can do it!!" I drywalled my basement by myself years ago and it's still standing. I wasn't nearly as difficult as this ceiling. You ROCK! Did anyone tell you how labor intensive the sanding is? And...wear a mask while sanding. I learned the hard way and got bronchial pneumonia.

    I'm blown away! I am just soooo... impressed by your True-Grit determination and ability to step back from an impossible task, to nearly admit defeat by starting to call for outside help, then give up on that as a waste of time and return, all beaming smiles and positivity, to finish the job.     Just one thought. DRY wall is heavy and gravity is relentless. I think I would add more screws. I applaud your effort. Mudding and taping are difficult, especially overhead.

    So satisfying to see the ceiling coming together. It's frustrating to put everything you've got into a project - and have to redo it. You two did it!! Hell, I would have been crying and throwing a fit. Good job!

    Make certain you have the tapered joints together. Use paper tape. Apply a light coat of mud that has been thinned with a little water. Apply the tape and then apply another light coat. Let it dry. Use you blade and scrape the mudded joint. Apply more thin coats of mud moving away from the joint at 6 inch increments on each side of the joint until there is a coverage. Now sand or sponge the rough spot.

    You two are amazing .Remember when Eddison was inventing the light bulb.He failed thousands of times but picked himself up and kept going .He finally got a bulb to work and look where we are now .I really felt for you both but knowing you are both winners and always get there in the end I know you could do this .

    I am not a contractor but it is my understanding that the mesh tape is used mainly when the gap or hole you are trying to fill is larger than a regular joint between sheet rock sheets.

    You really need to look at this very serious safety concern:
    All trusses are designed for specific conditions, including top cord load, bottom cord load, lateral deflection and web deflection. You have altered the bottom cord stability. Usually, a solidly sheathed bottom cord is needed to keep it aligned and to keep them from deflecting to the point of collapse under load. You don’t have that any more.
    Please find a structural engineer (or at least a truss designer) and show them you truss design, along with you location (for snow load calculations), and they will design a solution for fixing your trusses for cord and web strength. This may be as simple as adding a few braces in specific location, but is very, very important. Don’t dismiss this for your own safety, as well as that of your friends, guests, dogs, and your investment in your home.

    Taping secret U most make the mud thinner. add a 1/4 to 1/2 a cup of water and mix with drill. The pre-made mud is always too think and you need big muscles to work it. So make it a little thinner!!!

    Girls, you can do anything you want to do because you think about and research before you even start. You used the paper tape, which is whatever you prefer. I prefer to use the mesh but that is whatever you are comfortable with using. Every time I use paper tape I always have edges that don’t want to stay stuck to the mud. With the mesh, the mud just squeezes right up through the tape and has never turned loose because it is embedded in the mud. You both have learned so much and you always have a new prospective when you step away and come back to it later. It’s like looking at it with fresh eyes. Your little cabin in the woods is looking so sweet. Not only have you done much of the work yourselves but you have thought of things that not everyone would even imagine. That is why your little homestead will be there for a long long time. You are going to be so pleased with yourselves when you get this finished and I am so proud of you two now and will be even more so later on.     In my 62 years I’ve probably hung as much ceiling drywall as you have in this single video. I still can’t seam very well. I would never even consider doing this ceiling. I fell off the ladder removing popcorn from my current houses 12’ ceiling. But yes those exposed beams are going to be totally worth the effort. Love your videos.

    I've been watching your channel for a while and I'm amazed how hard you two work and video recording the whole thing, then editing and getting it onto your channel. Good on you for not giving up on your dream. When you guys are finished this huge project you should be awarded the Order of Canada medal. You can sit back and say "We did that!"     You two are very talented, and you've done more than a lot of people could do, or try. I f it was me I'd have put a wood ceilind in. You can paint it, stain it, or leave it natural.     You two inspired me to fix my toilet today (had to saw off a stubborn bolt) & this project has been haunting me for months. I put this spare john repair on hold after being told I had to have a spinal fusion, which I am still recovering from, & after resolving that I'd have to call a plumber. But no!     I did my bathroom ceiling by myself it took 3 months. I used plastic tiles, gorilla glue and lots of white caulk. I had one flaw so I covered it with a decorative cloth over the sink. The reason I had to do it was I had a leak. I had to tear out the old tiles pull out all the very wet insulation and replaced it with foam. The only problem is the foam expanded too much and created a slight bulge in one of the tiles so that's were the decoration came in. You can't really see it until it is pointed out. I was a long hard job doing it by myself but I learn a lot from doing it. Great Job Guys! :)

    Back in the day I renovated some nine houses and did a lot of drywalling, which is basically measuring correctly and not forcing the fitting, but taping and mudding is an art that takes years to get right. I did use the paper tape on my first reno but gave up after it was a mess and I started using the fabric stick-on tape that was so much easier. Despite my years of experience drywalling I would never have had the courage to attempt what you guys are doing. Amazing as always. Love ya both.

Which was huge. I really don't get why everyone thinks drywall is so difficult? This little old lady taught me drywall and seriously it wasn't all that difficult???? Anyway you guys can do it!!! You've done other stuff much harder.❤

    Keep going. You have the first layer of mug up. Sand the bumps out, more mud, and use your blade to even out all your lines. Let it dry and mud a thin but broader layer over. The 3rd may be your last layer. Sand, sand, sand…. You’re doing a wonderful job. You two can do anything you want to do based on your spirits and personalities. Keep it up and your home will become even more amazing!

      I've noticed that too seems like the last couple videos has been over dramatic I don't know what's going on with you girls. It seems like you changed a little I don't know it fits your station having you do this or are being over hyper but this being overdramatic is I don't know it's hard to listen while you're screaming but I love your show I have watched you since day one and watch you every Sunday I love the things that you build and the stories behind that being so loud and overdramatic makes it hard to follow you I'm not trying to be a critic but I do love your show sometimes I fast forward through the things that's just screaming and I love what you build and I watch you and I learn I am a really big fan in Alabama it looks like you have many many sponsors maybe they could help you with the drywall just a thought.     I am getting myself a camper tomorrow. It will be at a campground till fall getting remodeled an lived in. I am done with renting an paying someone else’s bills. A house would be too much for me right now. I have been stuck at home for too long between Covid restrictions and then recovering from my multiple surgeries. Thankfully that is all in the past now. I will be busy with remodeling it an making it safer for when I hit the road. I am so excited to start this next chapter.

    We do this so different in the UK, once it is boarded, we cover seams in the mesh tape and then plaster. When we moved into our house and stripped the existing wallpaper off it was all old fashioned lat and lime so the whole house needed re-boarding and plastering. This was going to be very very expensive so I booked myself on a plastering course, I was the only woman there and laughed at by the men. Having learnt the basics off I went on my own house and saved us thousands of pounds. Hats off to you ladies as it is difficult work, at least you don’t have to plaster it all as that is a killer. Good luck with the other side. X

    I tried to do a sheet rock repair 3×2 ft on the lower wall. It took me 6 days.. I sucked at every part of it. I have a plant sitting in front of the repair.
    I love the determination the two of you have. I'm excited to see the finished job. When feeling defeated, go to the charging station. (charge to 100%)

I used to not be able to look at myself in a mirror because I hated myself and thought I just was crap at everything. But that's a long story. To make it short I still struggle at times but I have more patience and compassion for myself.. I'm glad you have each other!! To cheer each other on!!     I have another suggestion for you two lovely strong Spartans, (before starting, check with the laws up there), maybe building a garage near your cabin since tou have all that land/trees/all those tools. If you think about it, it's just 3 major walls, roof then the parts for the front garage. You can ecen add another bathroom in that garage too (backup shower). shrug. If you think about it you have all the wood already and you ladies can always replant trees later. :) Finally, it protects all your vecgicles from the cold weather.

    It's definitely that most people would either:
    a. put a flat ceiling below trusses, or
    b. Use another framing design to create a cathedral ceiling where you wouldn't have the bottoms of trusses in your way.
    Paper tape is better for shear resistance when your house settles and your sheets move/flex. Fibreglass tape will break your mud into little pieces when it shears. Vancouver Carpenter has an amazing body of knowledge for drywall for your next projects.
    The finished product looks good from my house. A couple coats of ceiling pant and it's good to go.
