- In this video I react to schizophrenia TV and movie characters! I talk about my current favorite and least favorite. Actors try to portray real schizophrenia episodes and are often times exaggerated or completely false. I want to do reaction videos to Criminal Minds, Grey's Anatomy, House, A Beautiful Mind, Words on a Bathroom Wall and more! Are there any movies or tv shows about schizophrenia that YOU would like me to check out or react too?
This was recorded last week so I will be sure to mention it next week in my video but.... THANK YOU FOR 100,000 SUBSCRIBERS! I hope I can continue to offer you all more insight to my life with schizophrenia including my hallucinations, medications and coping mechanisms!
Be sure to like and subscribe!

🥰 Your mom's comment "if they take you they'll have to take me too". 😂
really appreciate you highlighting the harm created with media portrayals of schizophrenia and how it's commonly centered around the "violence" angle cuz that is exactly where people's minds go (speaking as someone who would talk about my deceased mom's paranoia schizophrenia) thanks to how misinformed the general population is on schizophrenia in general. very over it. very done with it. though i wasn't aware that deadpool canonically has schizophrenia though!! wish that would get talked about more, dang.
i personally haven't watched criminal minds because i'm not a fan of shows that promote copaganda but i might have to check out a couple of episodes just to check out Diana Reeds.
with that said: would love to see a reaction video to the Portal 2 comic that focuses on Doug Rattman (and explains the events between Portal 1 and Portal 2), who has paranoia schizophrenia. although i would argue that the portrayal of his schizophrenia isn't perfect by any means, there are facets to the comic i really do value.
Did you ever played Hellblade? Senua, the main character, has psychosis and the game tries to allows player to experience her symptoms. You should check it out and tell us your opinion.
I’m a big fan of Criminal Minds as well.. haven’t seen the movie yet but you Kody have really taught me a lot about mental illness I appreciate you 🙏💜
Just watched "Six Schizophrenic Brothers" and it really made me want to learn more. Especially when the youngest sibling said she didnt want people to be afraid of schizophrenia....because WHY did the show dramatize it and make me scared when we were introduced to the surviving brothers 🤦♀️🤦♀️
The movie Secret Window hit me hard. As I had big trouble with a very bossy and aggressive voice that felt a lot like the one he struggles with in the movie. It is not a good representation in general, but the first part of the movie really felt so real for me, for how I struggled.
I recently saw on Netflix (it's on here too) Strange Voices with Nancy Mckeon and Valerie Harper. I really liked it because I thought it was realistic. I saw myself in the main character Nikki. I like that they don't sensationalize it, and they show not only what it's like for the person living with schizophrenia, but also how it affects the family. They show a lot of little things too, like the cognitive issues, the frustration with getting confused, medication side effects, all that. I really appreciated the way this movie was done. It was made in the late 80s for television and received mixed reviews, but I personally thought they did a good job. I think a person who doesn't have or know anyone with schizophrenia won't catch the little things, so maybe that's hard to really get, but I liked the little details and implications the most because that looked more like what my day to day is like.
Like you, I also love Diana Reid on Criminal Minds. I started watching the show before I got diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder. It was my first encounter with schizophrenia in the media (I was very young when it first aired), and I think that made it at least a little less scary for me when I became diagnosed. They wrote the character with such empathy and knowledge, and Jane Lynch really played it that way too. Thanks for sharing a little bit about your mother, she sounds as awesome as you are. I don't have any kids myself, but if I did, or do eventually, I'd like to be a mom whose kid has such nice things to say about like you do with your mom. She obviously did a great job with you.
I LOVE Strange Voices. Rewatched it today. I wrote up a whole comment about it but I don't think it posted. 😑
@@kchardison9480 No, I don't think your comment posted. But I'm glad you saw it and liked it! I have seen it twice and have been thinking about watching it again.
Donnie Darko touched me honestly (which rarely happens)
Long time follower, first time commenter - just wanted to say thank you so much for all your content! I'm actually a writer working on a story with a main character who is living with schizophrenia. Though I'm not living with the illness, I am trying to portray it as accurately as possible, and your content has been an absolute bedrock for that research. Needless to say, I'm really looking forward to this series - thanks again, and for the Criminal Minds rec! (Btw, Lauren over at Living Well with Schizophrenia covered a similar topic a while back, and though she wasn't too keen on A Beautiful Mind's portrayal, she felt the series Maniac on Netflix got it right - possibly something you can also check out in the upcoming series.)
I REALLY enjoyed Maniac, I hope he watches it and does reaction videos.
Thank you for sharing ❤❤❤ Your mum seems lovely ❤
Hi just found your channel! I don't have any related mental diagnoses as you but I find your content fascinating and really wholesome and you just seem like a cool guy. I think it would be really interesting and fun to watch if you did do live streams and from the way you use technology maybe even helpful to you? Like your chat could confirm reality for you or something. Anyways cool channel and hope it continues to grow!
Some films that I've seen (aside from A Beautiful Mind xD) that touch on Schizophrenia are Donnie Darko (although... very trippy film), I'd say maybe the film Pi, and Love & Mercy (although that was a music biopic).
Famous examples of films, that I like, that talk about mental illness are "Girl, Interrupted", "Good Will Hunting" (both pretty much about BPD, but the first more explicitly), "Lars and the Real Girl" (potentially about Schizoid/Schizotypal PD... but explicitly they mention "Delusional Disorder") and "Silver Linings Playbook" (about Bipolar & potentially BPD. I love that film.)
A beautiful mind was my introduction to schizophrenia actually. I'd love to see your reaction to it. My grandmom had it and I never knew until high school.
How about horse girl? It’s on Netflix. Thank you so much for this❤
I haven't seen the Rian rendolds movie but my friend is schizophrenic and very violent because his voices do always tend to provoke him to become violent.
Hi, great channel! I don't have schizophrenia myself but I do have an aunt who has it and a passionate interest in the human mind. I want to recommend a movie and get your opinion whether it represents the experience well: Fear of Rain.
When I watched it I personally felt all of the main character's emotions, I was just as scared, confused and frustrated. As opposed to many other representations in the media, in this movie the person with schizophrenia is the "hero", she is trying to save someone that she believes is being mistreated, despite not being sure if it's real or not. Watching this movie might be the closest I ever got to understanding what it's like to have schizophrenia, so please give it a watch!
(P.S. I have inattentive ADHD, did you know that people with ADHD are characteristically low on dopamine, while schizophrenia is high dopamine? Our medication aims to increase dopamine production, while anti-psychotic medication inhibits it! I thought this is quite interesting, dopamine affects so many things: your motivation, your muscles, your memory, your focus, your mood, your sleep..)
I played a little of Hellblade Senua's Sacrifice, but I stopped playing due to her psychosis making mine worse. I have considered trying it again and maybe making my own video about it, but haven't been brave enough yet. XD (Paranoid Schizophrenic)
I have not dared trying to play it for that same reason. Scared that it would be too real for me with the voices, scared it would amplify my own voices.
@@shadowofkitsune For me that was indeed the case, I did enjoy the game but it was hard to deal with at times.
Jane Lynch is just amazing in Criminal Minds. I love Diana.
Never seen Criminal minds but may watch it. I myself have schizophrenia
My favorite atm is "Fear of rain". Her hallucinations are very accurate and I like how she tried to see the difference between real and unreal
I would love to know your opinion on Senua for sure!
Hey Kody, would be curious to get your perspective on the movie Spider, from 2002. Directed by David Cronenberg
there’s a schizophrenic kid in the cartoon “grimsburg” which is a new show, if you wanna check that out for future videos
The Netflix show YOU is a great one towards the later season
I have paranoid schizophrenia. So the movie is basically about my life
I wrote about a movie about paranoid schizophrenia and it’s a comedy about the illness. I would like to talk to you about it.
For some movies I like about schizophrenia basically are:
The soloist
I have paranoid schizophrenia too
I HAVE seen the Ryan Reynolds movie. I love the movie as a regular comedic movie not a documentary about mental health, but it feeds this idea that people with mental health issues = they unalive ppl, unfortunately
I wanna see the film Split.
Do you remember which episodes those were for Criminal Minds?
Diana first appears in The Fisher King, which is the first season finale. The one he shows where she says about keeping him there more than one night is season four- The Instincts and Memorian. Theres a handful of other episodes later in series.
How about: Lars and the real girl
My favorite schizophrenic character is you. The first schizophrenic that’s accepted their diagnosis and could have hallucinations in his house and not know they are hallucinations. Oh, hi, you must be bob from behind the 7/11. Why don’t you have a seat on my couch already? Like only people without schizophrenia could believe that people just pop in your house and you need cameras to tell if they are real. You get dementia all of a sudden or something? Like dude if a person just popped up in my house there wouldn’t even be a conversation. I’d think the person was robbing me. You talk to them like they been there and just got back from using the restroom. Bs. Plus you claim in past videos to be “paranoid” but random people you don’t know popping up in your house doesn’t alarm you and you talk to them forgetting that you already know you have schizophrenia and someone wasn’t there a second ago! Hilarious
Great video. Please bring your wife back for discussions. Please review movie Mozart and the whale. Free version on YT. Can you interview someone with schizophrenia and parkinsons? Thanks
Obviously you don't read the comments but anyway you should watch the movie "It's a Beautiful Mind." Great movie, real people that have done interviews.
I do read the comments, although it can be difficult to keep up with them when I’m posting on 5 different platforms. I try my best tho. And I am fairly certain I mentioned beautiful mind in this video and that I would eventually be reviewing it.
@@SchizophrenicHippie Thanks for responding. Yes you did mention it, great movie, I hope you watch it.
A beautiful mind 🫶🏼. For my intro to psychology I had to write a paper on it. I cried. Based on the true story of prominent mathematician John Forbes Nash Jr.
