Spot on. As fun as it was to have a rat-rod Ferrari, a full stripped-to-the-frame restoration and a well-finished convertible conversion is what this car has deserved from the beginning. Your experiences with the Boxer and the Scud have all been leading you to this place.
Thanks buddy
Hacker is totally right. You know what you are doing now.
*I would love to see that journey from start to finish!*
Couldn’t agree more, plus we’ve all had the enjoyment of experiencing this awesome car. It will be amazing to see what comes of the car going forward with the restoration it deserves after loyal service.
Massive respect for gettin all jobs done in your driveway and garage!
Thank you
@@Ratarossa Indeed! Any chance of putting in a big lintel and changing to a single (large) door garage?
@@hifiandmtb I was just about to make the same comment. Either that or he really needs to rent a shop.
Yep ! @Ratarossa you would have made an excellent gynaecologist ☝🏼
I think a restoration series on this would be great and how about capping it off with selling it at auction!? That would really show that you did it and fund a number of projects (like an F40, huh?).
Can't do it. That car is what the channel is named for. He almost HAS to hang on to it. Plus...once it's done, he won't WANT to get rid of it
@@stephenstevens6573 I don't think there are rules for this. Scott can do as he pleases, right?
GREAT idea !
But seriously, 16 grand to potentially 1 million! Well done sir 👏
Side by side comparison definitely 🐎
Despite the Testarossa being the kickstart to the channel I believe that it can now become the catalyst to the channel growing even more once again. The restoration project (alongside the BBI) will bring in an increase in views/subscribers, revenue and the end sale will allow reinvestment in other projects and finally a workshop rather than your driveway. For what it's worth I would love to see a 388 GTO replica build, use the £ from the sale, find a ratty 308 GTB and take us all on another journey Scott! Whatever you decide I'll be watching and best of luck.
Scott, have you thought about putting in an RSJ, removing the dividing pillar in the garage and fitting one large door to give you better working space in your garage? It would make working inside an awful lot easier for you.
Why you need this creepy guy ?
@@lucasRem-ku6eburanasshole!
That's a fantastic idea! One steel beam across the top, weekend project. Or just get 4 wheel sliders and save a ton of moolah
For the roof top you could consider retrofitting a manual soft top from other models, even outside Ferrari. Or building a custom Carbon Fiber hard top, able to be storage in the frunk.
He's in the UK , it's not a frunk , it's a boot.
@@Leonardo555ZZZ Or is it a foot?
@@pSynrg303 lol
@@pSynrg303 a froot more like
Have you ever thought about getting a small workshop?
You can run a series on finding one, fitting it out (tools, decor etc) & I think it will help take the channel to the next level & yes, prioritize the Testarossa build as you can either hang on to it as a retirement investment, or sell it to raise capital for the channel.
Yes but so expensive in my area ... great idea though I am always looking
I’m sure you’ve thoughts of this, but why not convert your existing garage to a double wide door. Tools can go on the side and you’ll recover some depth in the process. You’ll probably need a steel beam across top of the opening, but it’s doable.
@@Ratarossa Good luck, hopefully something will come up. You certainly have to be proud & give yourself a pat on the back for what you have achieved to date.
@@Ratarossa Speak to Mat Armstrong. His property connections and network might have someone who could assist with securing a premises.
Paul and his sons and the team at total tyres have always been the best I miss living nearby
I really enjoyed watching you tightening the wheel nuts then needing a team to get it undone ,I knew straight away hilarious 🤣
For the center-lock wheels, look into getting a torque multiplier head for your socket. Really looking forward to the rest of the build series on this!
Wow never head of those
@@Ratarossa I only heard of torque multipliers when Salvage Rebuilds Rob needed an angine cover (Ford Ecoboost) swapping over. He left it to someone else - Phoenix?
@@Ratarossa I guess you have never worked on HGV trucks then, the only way for lorry wheel nuts
Or you lift u instead of just push down.
A normal guy can dead lift 400kgs a few cms up, but you can only push down your body weight x1.5
For loosening tightly stuck nuts, first attempt to tighten them. Then work them in the desired direction.
Adding some penetrating anti-seize spray oil might be in order.
This is going to be an epic series!! Excited to see the progress.
That car deserves a restoration, it’s had a hard life and now is it’s time to shine. It will always be the ratarossa, but will look a little less ratty.
I understand why youd want to restore it but i hope it doesnt ruin your ability to enjoy it when its all fancy and nice. Either way ill still be here watching and enjoying the videos as usual.
He will have to get a new work bench !
Trouble is all classic cars are going that way. Getting too valuable to use because prices are going crazy. Parts are getting harder to come by and when normal fuel disappears, we will see these cars on the road less and less.
@@Rob_Huskett I wonder if the evolution of 3d printing will one day allow us to hand craft parts for classic cars
@@natebarry5553 To an extent it does already! 3D printed metal parts are a bit spendy still, especially if one needs to meet higher strength requirements. Hopefully continued development of the technology and scale will bring prices down to where it's more economically feasible for cheaper applications.
@@Rob_Huskett Thats the great thing about having it all ratty looking yoou dont mind getting a scratch or two and youre not worried where you park it because most people wont know the true value of it. The worst thing that could happen to this car is him restoring it to concours condition only to realise he cant drive it anywhere for fear of scratching it or someone running into it with a trolley.
I’m looking forward to the build. It’s going to look amazing.
So cool that you know the new owner Scott! I'm sure the differences are vast, but you can drive your car without worry too. I really hope and pray that you restore the Ratarossa AFTER you finish the BBi of course.
Super pumped for the Rat Resto series! Great decision, Scott 🙌🏻
A drag race with your friend with the Rat in it’s current condition would be brilliant. Can you imagine if the Rat gave it a good run for its money 😂
To see the comparison will be fascinating and hilarious at the same time.
The success of your channel is exemplary! I joined at maybe 15,000 subs .
A normal guy working on dream cars.
Brilliant
Thank you very much!
Massive cheers to the restoration! It just makes sense financially, and it'll be super cool to have a minty version of this car! Even if it would cost 200k, you're way ahead even if it's only really worth 500k or something. Like many have said, a no brainer.
We all know this is a future project and what a series that would be, probably the first of its kind on youtube, lifes too short, you've got the chance, the audience and a potential huge profit not to mention the enjoyment you'd have in transforming this into what it should be, one suggestion if well when it happens is to make the engine lid open up the correct way...best of luck, exciting times ahead for you and this channel, top bloke, down to earth, roll on the spider series! 👍
I can’t wait to see her all painted and sparkly. It’s exciting. I still REALLY want you to make a f40 Lm rep though. Don’t forget. You are gonna get huge amigo!
Can't wait to see the transformation is going to be epic 🐐
I meant to comment on the last vid, didn't get around to it, but so so pleased the consensus was to restore it, it will be the best series on RUclips!
Fantastic new series! Big challenge ahead! I have no doubt your up to it. I’m going to be following you progress vividly. Can’t wait ;-D
why you need him, the hammer tools ?
I remember when I was stationed in Germany in the mid 70's there was a Bosch repair shop. They did total repair to things like starters, alternators, and generators and also fabricated electrical regulators to factory specs.
Had a walk around their shop and they had all the specialized testing and repair stands for almost anything built for automotive electrical components.
You need to slide the extension pipe all the way over the bar. Then it won’t bent. A jack under the center also helps a lot against flexing!
100% this.
It won't bend but has less leverage eg. the entire point of using the bar in the first place.
Does is the video mirrored? Because they are turning it clockwise.
Been following your every video for about a year now Scott - fellow Brit here mate. You channel deserves all the success, love this latest (re)build!
It's going to be interesting how you approach the challenge of making a convertible roof for the car. I am looking forward to seeing this build, will no doubt look amazing when it's done 😁 👍
I love a challenge
@@Ratarossa I have no doubt you will get it done and it will work as good or better than factory 😉
@@Ratarossa Do the car first. The roof is a secondary project, like the cherry on top. Now that a friend of yours owns this red one you can at least have a proper look into the build of that tupé.
@@Ratarossa ... Stradale or otherwise... 🤣
I'll get me coat... 😄🖖
+1 vote for the Rastoration
I really enjoy the videos on the older cars, working at home. It seems much more a doable project for those of us on a budget. I'd love to see the rat restored!!!!
If anyone (other than Enzo Ferrari himself) can restore the Ratarossa, its Scott.
This will be historic!
Thanks buddy
I hope your channel blows up. Seems like you actually care for your subscribers, and your content is great. Wish you the best mate. Cheers from Norway
Just did my 360 timing belts thanks to you Scott 🎉
( BTW at age 70 as well 🎂)
Woo..... impressive.
I love an honest person with beer. Well done.
YES...If at all possible ...A video comparing the 2 Cars would be SUPER..!!
It would be worth changing your garage doors for one large door that way you can work and film in the centre of the garage. Easy to do a simple lintel swop and door frame. Nice vid
Good point!
@@Ratarossa Test the water first by just asking your subscribers their thoughts on it. :) 👍

Your Ratarossa is so awesome, like a rough diamond. Your DIY completes the image 👌😀 good luck with the metamorfosis.
Thank you! 😁
Great Video! this will be a fun one to watch the progress. that bad boy will need A LOT of work....
Yes it will
I was ROFL my ass off when you were tightening that wheel nut 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Righty Tightey lefty loosey
Honestly lol'd hard AF with the failled attempt at the wheel 😂
Hahahaha same, i couldn't figure out why he was tightening the lock nut trying to take it off LOL
Me too.
that would be a great video Ratarossa vs Testarossa Spider. Can't wait.
New windscreen wiper blades would be a welcome addition. 😄
the screen was very dirty ...blades i (think) are fine but will check
The comparison video will be a blast. You and your pal will be all smiles!!
Definitely do a full restoration on it. Make it perfect.
That sale's fantastic news, Scott! Even if you only got 1/3rd of that, you could be in profit by £400k! That's not to be sniffed at! Plus the views/revenue/channel growth a restoration would probably generate, it's a win/win scenario!
Can't wait to see the Pininfarina and Ratarossa side-by-side! 😁😁😁
As much as I love the variety of colours offered by Ferrari this car has to be Rosso Corsa over your choice of interior. There are some lovely blue Testarossas that left the factory as well as some darker reds, but your car is the "Outrun" TR, it has to be Rosso, but I'd be inclined to keep the tan interior.
Couldn't agree more!
Great was wondering when next vid will be out….. looking forward to this 👍👍👍 will be a great journey….
This was a hell of a job to take those wheels off. Yes to the comparison :)
It would have helped if i turned it the correct way
@@Ratarossa I did wonder why you were not doing lefty loosey, instead righty tighty!!!! 🤣
@@Ratarossa hi, i guess you heard about anti sieze compound, not sure if it is because of different metals that they stick
YES!, YES!, YES! I would love to see a side-by-side comparison!!!
Thanks for showing your mistakes as well as your victories. If you wrench long enough you will absolutely do something that when looking back is dumb, but at the time made sense. Can’t wait to see this project progress.
As soon as you started trying to take the wheel off I thought to myself ‘shouldn’t it be lefty loosey?’ 🤣
Yep im an idiot
Yes I was yelling at the youtube
He is lucky he didn’t strip the threads
i was looking for this comment
You should get yourself a silent air compressor and some air tools (rattle gun, tyre inflator, air gun, air cleaner, media blaster). If got one and found it very handy for rattling off hard-to-budge nuts (especially on rotating things which are hard to hold), air gun for blowing out liquids from nooks and crannies, air cleaning gun for degreasing, media blaster for soda blasting.... Silent compressors are very quiet so you can pretty much use them at any time without raising a ruckus.
The Rat does look proper solid underneath. No idea what the rust spots are but it's defo a good base for restoration and adding a soft top
Here's a Ferrari Testarossa restoration tip for ya: Lefty; Loosey, Righty; Tighty. It also works on tightening or loosening a lid on a jar of jam, attaching a garden hose, putting a nut on a bolt, all kinds of stuff.
I think it says something, when you showed your total 'fail' on the wheel removal. Most would've burned that footage....and moved on.
Thanks for showing us that you're just like us 'buffoons', when it comes to DIY... haha
Ha ha ha thanks buddy
The advantage of having access to the Pininfarina is that you have the “factory” spec car to emulate and study the roof if you do the full restore. Love the car and the channel!
Good luck with the restauration of the Rat and you better be quick before all the other Testarossa owners chop their cars😀!
That's the plan!
When adjusting ride height, the upper and lower inner wishbone bolts need to be loosened and then re-torqued. Otherwise the bushes will bind and fail prematurely.
Also the play in the steering was possibly the inner and outer track rod ends, not the rack. 👍
You need that garage centre column removed with a single roller door 👍
That would be cool!
Mate this is such a good intro video. I am excited to get stuck into this over the winter! Cheers man!
You have to make this happen!! If you can't polish it, at the very least you should sprinkle glitter on it 😆
LOL
One of my favourite videos so far from this channel!
Have you ever thought about getting a garage like Matt Armstrong? Give you plenty more space to work on the cars
Matt lives in a much cheaper area than me. I would love to but around here the prices are CRAZY to rent one
If you put it where you lift the breaker bar to loosen put your floor jack underneath. ONLY for EXTREME cases and it is not really the safest thing to do but it has saved me one or two times
YES PLEASE BLACK ON TAN
That kind of comparison would be awesome. Following you from Vancouver Canada. Thanks for all the great content.
you were bashing it the wrong way!!!
Yep I’m a self confessed DORK !!!
@@Ratarossa also I notice you sourced a Bosch starter, good work. My Maseratti has a whole host of secretly sourced parts that cost a fortune from Maserati but with the right info you can save a fortune. Why do they do this? it's almost fraud!!
I have to tell you that I found the Ratarossa on that kit car website about 10 - 12 years ago and I REALLY wanted to get it. But I knew I didn't have the ability to bring it back to life. So I waffled back and forth and eventually let it go. I'm glad that someone who has the ability to bring it back got it. Good luck with the project. I'll get myself a Testa someday...
Thanks buddy. I really do love this car and have had some great fun with it. So thanks for not buying it
pole:))
Well done that was super fast
Would be great to see the comparison, good luck with the build
Pich it to your local bank manager because you are going to burn through some bucks gettting The Rat up to scratch.
Sounds like a great restoration series is yours for the taking here on YT if you can get the funds for the restoration.
That's all the body work re-aligned, panel gaps etc, back to bare metal respray and quite a lot of interior work.
I'll bet it wil be a hit series on this channel.
Best of luck, Scottie
The way I always remembered on the race cars was, you put the wheel "back on", meaning to tighten either side, you'd turn the wrench toward the back.
Interesting stuff as per previous efforts.
First thing I thought of when you started to undo the Hub Wheel Fasteners was checking if "old school" left or right-handed threads. Simply because been there done that many moons ago. Did you get those helpful Guys to loosen the rear wheel ones whilst there. Almost certainly they will be silly tight from those working on the car in previous ownership.
Ten years ago, bought a very tidy used car which came with hefty Invoice in previous ownership to renew all four Brakes and Discs. Bonus. Always the pessimist, no matter what the "history" or previous owner tells me, first opportunity I get I check the brakes on any used car I buy. Brakes are important and history and word of mouth is no guarantee of a job well done. The previous owner entrusted this job to the outfit he always uses and no doubt they used very powerful power tools on the wheel Bolts when fitting the wheels after the brake renewal job. I had to use a five foot scaffold pole off cut and my big boy 3/4" Breaker Bar and best quality Impact hex-sockets ( never use bi-hex twelve point sockets ) all my fifteen stone to undo jumping on the pole to release all twenty 17mm Alloy Wheel Bolts. I actually took an image of the set up before releasing the bolts. Most made an audible crack when they let go. There really is no need to over tighten fasteners silly tight. Lazy to just power tool them silly tight to be "on the safe side". One of my pet hates this over tightening stuff by power tool ab/use in the pro-workshop environment. It is widespread in my experience. Yes, torquing them to the correct value will take more time but, doing that means I will be coming back for more for jobs I do not fancy doing myself. Sometimes I have been quoted very reasonable charges for a job I could do myself, so reasonable not worth me getting the tools and axle stands out and getting my hands dirty.
Another pet hate, using rim clip balance weights hammered onto nice alloy wheels. I bought four new tyres and watched from the waiting room as they fitted the new tyres onto my newly refurbished alloy wheels. He was just about to hammer rim-clip balance weight to my nice newly refurbished wheels when I jumped up and shouted STOP. Just in time. He understood my reaction. In the box alongside the rim clip balance weights, the correct self-adhesive ones. d'OH!
Had I had a puncture, the tool kit the car came with could no way enable me to change a wheel. It was a real struggle using the heavyweight kit and extension pole. The tool kit will work now though.
Keep this good spanner work stuff coming. Really appreciate them.
You see, this man is SMART, here's why... When you love a certain kind of car, odds are others will love it too, so you buy the cheapest one on the planet, and ONLY MAKE IT MECHANICALLY SOUND! Don't worry about the cars cosmetic condition, ENJOY DRIVING IT for a decade or two, THEN restore it after years of enjoyment. Doing this gives a great car time to appreciate in value, and all the while you got to enjoy it, worry free, and end up making a mint on it. You see, here in the states there's a little Nissan called the "NX 2000." Right now there virtually worthless, but they've got factory alloy rims, T-tops, 4 wheel independent suspension, 4 wheel disk brakes, 165 hp SR20de engine, and 5 speed manual transmissions. That's the recipe for future collectors car, and loads of fun to drive. So, cars like that, buy em' cheap, get them running strong, drive the crap out of them, wait for the rest of the world to notice how fun they are to drive, THEN restore them, turn a huge profit, basically get paid to enjoy driving your car. Like I said, smart guy. Y'all should learn something from him...
I’d love to see a comparison of the two cars, and looking forward to your work on the rat:-) Thank you Scott
Keep these home mechanicing videos going Scott. They are class.
Excellent intro. Thanks for the honesty.
Great work Scott
Glad you enjoyed it
YESSSSSS 👍🏻, a side by side video would be AWESOME!!! Great job Scott, as always U DA MAN 👊🏻
Coming soon!
@@Ratarossa NIIIIICE, can’t wait 👍🏻
Noted the little nod to outrun at the end there
You can also put the long breaker bar handle end on the ground and drive car forward or back to break wheel nut free. Uses ground and cars weight as leverage but a little sketchy 😂
It would be so cool to see the 2 cars together! I love the Ratarossa as is but it probably does make sense to restore it. Ultimately it is your car so do what you want!
Always use an impact gun with track rod end ball joints (after wire brushing & WDing the threads to reduce drag), a lot of the time you don't even need a splitter fork (but you can use it if it does release early) 😉
Great video.. My recommendation for Ratarosa would be a Ferrari Red mirror Chrome Wrap.
Just missing the ""Out Run" music at the end.
Top tip! You are tightening all the wheel locks instead of loosening them! That is for both sides. Think of how you open a soda bottle cap and it should be easier next time ;)
Some cars wheels aren't lefty loosy righty tighty.
Great start Scott! The image of you guys swinging on those tommy bars! So sketchy but something I have also found myself doing.( piece of wood wedged between the brake pedal and the seat base works on the gt3 if you’re short handed, also requires a massive bar to remove the lock nuts) Looking forward to the roller coaster ride this will inevitably be....🍻
Good to see that your finally restoring it
@Ratarossa it would be SOOO cool to see the Pininfarina spyder! It could also prove helpful in determining what to do with your car.
Only the 2nd video I've watched, but already subscibed and looking forward to watching you turn the car in to a million pound plus motor. Think it's the absolute right way to go, and result having access to your pals £1.5 mil example. Anything you're not sure about, you've the best thing in the world to check out and therefore get yours bang on. Well looking forward to seeing the car's transformation. Good luck and all the best mate.
Nut and bold restoration by the best ferrari shop copy the OG roof could get a mill...
JayEmm sent me to Dadcars... Dadcars sent me here. I've seen this Testarossa on videos before however I'm glad I've discovered the channel behind it. I love the Rat look scene. Testarossa is my favorite Ferrari so naturally I love this car.
Today has been a good day for RUclips discoveries!
Love the scene at the petrol station! Made me laugh because it’s happened to me so many times! 😂
LOL
When the posts start turning on your rod ends or ball joint ends. Look at the end of the post/thread itself. Most have either a squared off tip, or an open end for an Allen key.... That way you can hold the post stationary and use a spanner to loosen the bolt mate.
Hope this helps ya
Looking at it today, the amount of front overhang is beyond comical. I did have a poster of this car in the 80's. At that time, it was so cool.
80s pin up car
You would have loosened the left wheel; if you hadn't made a mistake from the get go .But very great job overall and EXCELLENT VIDEO YOU ROCK !!
I was like, you’re going the wrong way with the wrench on the wheel!!! Lol. Glad you clarified later in the video.
Mate this vid was very entertaining love it .. keep it up
Amusement aside, Porsche centre lock owners tip : Norbar 5:1 torque multiplier. 75cm breaker bar becomes equivalent to about 14 feet. Buy used on eBay to avoid heart attack pricing and you will never have wheel trauma ever again.
Can't wait to see this completed.
@Ratarossa How much you fetch for it is going to depends on the quality of your build/resto. I really think if you do it right it will see 1M. You have all the parts mostly. It's a lot of labor, and paint etc.. but you should be able to do this way under 100k I think. These are great margins, a no brainer.
Had a similar issue getting a hub nut off. Some great advice pointed me to a lorry tyre fitters who had a monster tool for this exact job.
