You should look up retrobriting for removing yellowing from plastics. Its often done with old game consoles (NES & SNES) and old 8-bit computers from the 80s (Commodore 64, Apple II). I imagine the same process would work on the transparent headlight covers. No sanding required. You just need to use a mixture of hydrogen peroxide & water and have a source of UV light (either the sun, or actual UV lights)

I wonder if it would help to put that solution in an ultrasonic bath as well?

@@chir0pter No. The UV light breaks up the H2O2 into H2O and O. I.E. you get a single oxygen atom which wants to bind to anything it can find. This is a form of oxygen bleaching.

When removing old stickers, particularly if you want to reuse them, heat the surface up on the opposite side (if possible) for a longer period (though not enough to start to burn the sticker) then use a scalpel so your fingers don’t contaminate the adhesive.
Also heat up the surface you’re applying the sticker onto as this softens the adhesive again, and as it cools it will form an even stronger bond.

If you go the peroxide and UV resto method (totally recommended for pretty much any sun damaged plastics) please please DO THEM ALL. You may think for example that those orange ones are fine with just a bath but this could be the difference between having half your lenses “like new” and half of them “fine for an old girl”. Great job so far bud.

Good Day from the USVI. The yellowing on your plastic lenses is from UV damage. The plastic originaly had a UV protectant and that has perished. If you wet sand the plastic with 1500 grit sand paper and it looks clear while wet you can apply a clear coat over it that has UV protectant (most good quality CC) and it will both end up clear and stay that way. If you use a restorer polish system it will quickly go back to yellow if exposed to sunlight. Adhesion promoter hhen clear. 1500 grit scratches are no problem. It will look cloudy until cleared. 2 part acrylic urethane is what I use. Cheers for the videos and good luck.

(or if metal parts have it machined based on the scanned mesh/dimensions)

Sodium Bicarbonate toothpaste in warm water is great for bringing lenses back to life! (Small circular motion with a wet rag).
I often use this a cleaning-compound when restoring medieval armour, because it is so SO fine.
This is also great for removing scratches from watch and clock-faces, lenses and jewellery.

I've done a fair bit of work with acrylic, which is what I used to make my speakers from. The polish we used is called Farecla and it will bring it up to a nice finish, but it does leave white residue which you will have to remove. An ultrasound cleaner would probably do a nice job, and you don't need to go very expensive on those. Another tool that helps with this is a Water Pic, which is basically a pressure washer for teeth. That's the brand name for the original product but there are lots of copies nowadays and the one I have now is called Blynx, which you can get from Amazon for under £20. If Farecla (which isn't cheap, and you'll get a 10 years supply in their smallest tin) isn't easy to find then Amari Plastics should have it or be able to tell you where to get it. They are based in the West Country but I think they've got a centre in Park Royal, or used to have. Having said that, it's just a polishing paste, so others of similar grit should do as well. The problem is these plastics are amazingly soft - certainly by comparison to modern paintwork. 2000 or even 3000 grit will still show lines so you'll need a pack that goes to 5000 or 7000. Then, what we do with acrylic is flame polish it, which is a bit of an art not to burn the edges so it's worth practising a few times before doing it on the original part. It's not the end of the world if you do get some burning or bubbling but it'll be back to the sanding and you'll lose a bit of material.
The other thing you could do is make a mould from the cleaned up original and make new ones with clear acrylic. Make the mould up using tooling epoxy and following the instructions in the EasyComposites YT video on mould making. You can get the liquids from Amari, or any other acrylic wholesalers, or you can make it up by dissolving bits of acrylic (which you can buy online from Rohm (superb company too) in either dichloromethane or chloroform. They'll probably be happier to give you dichloromethane but people like to know who's buying both products. If you are impatient you can always go and buy some cheap toothbrushes with clear handles, break them up into small bits and dissolve those. If you want to see how the moulding goes, get some plasticene and press the part into that. It's all great fun and the smell is fantastic! 😄😄😄

    • @ChristianRThomas
      @ChristianRThomas Год назад

PS. I've just seen someone suggesting making silicon moulds. That would be a LOT easier than my suggestion of using aluminium loaded epoxy. I expect you'd be very hard pressed to tell the difference after a little bit of finishing.

When it comes to the taillights I have a special trick for you my Dad taught me almost 30 years ago. Cleaning the outside is easy with polishers and plastic buffing compound but getting the insides clean take a little more lateral thought. To this end pour in a half a cup of uncooked rice together with a solution of water, dish soap, and some liquid bleach. With this solution in cover the opening and vigorously shake the lights. The rice will get into all the nooks and crannies and act as a scrub brush which will clean away all the embedded dirt. Once done dump out the rice and rinse it all out with plenty of water and let it air dry. Voila perfectly clean tail lights. Best of luck from Canada :)

Scott, i just saw a Testarossa Koenig Evo special spider in blue sera and OH MY GOD! Probably the most beautiful Ferrari models Ever made IMO. I am not sure how impossible it would be to find a Koenig body kit or a Hamann body kit but I would search high and low to make the Ratarossa the worlds most sought after wide body GP look Ferrari in existence. Maybe even update to 512 fascia. Dude. It's just money and you can make it happen. Side note: The small indicator light lenses can be restored with a watchmaker polish called Crystal Clear. Its made for older plastic watch crystals and easy to find but I have polished everything from scratched Compact Discs to actual vintage Rolex watch crystals. Works like a champ. I even managed to restore vintage dirt bike plastics on a older 1980's Kawasaki kx500 restoration I did. Good luck amigo. Build a Koenig dude. Please. Forget the F40 lm rep.

LIDL were doing lots of cordless tools recently. 20V 4 amp hour batteries, twin chargers and bare tools. I got an angle grinder, and not being able to think of anything else I needed or would use regularly, stumbled across a cordless heat gun that used the same batteries.
Very handing for heating heat shrink, or removing stickers, drying paint, removing adhesives, etc.

I improved lenses from my Fiero by putting them in a rock polisher rolling drum with a fine abrasive and some soapy water and let them roll for a couple days. Silver Polish has a very fine abrasive in it that works well on flat lenses for removing surface fog. rub it on with a cloth and wash off with soapy water. Just check to make sure the brand of silver polish you've got doesn't have any solvent in it that will cloud or melt plastic.

For my old beetle I used Brasso to clean up the lights but as they were cheap I could take the risk.
    They came out perfect.
I have heard the Deet (mozzy repellent) works on yellowed plastic headlights but of course you'll need to apply a UV sealant afterwards.
