Sean Danielson is such an underrated songwriter. Some argue this masterpiece is depressing and a show piece for the downtrodden. To me, it's an inspirational ballad about bettering yourself, and becoming the architect of your own destiny. Fuckin love it!

Someone told me this was a depressing song but I think it's just inspirational as hell!
It is inspirational, to me, it's basically saying don't let anything hold you down, dont be chained and pursue your dreams, be an example
I have this in my "depressed" playlist because like the other listed songs, pick me up.
Mad Pariah people only say that because depressed people tend to listen to songs like this to pick them up, so others just make a connection that ends up being the opposite of the truth.
Depends on what lens you listen to the words through without seeing the video I would never have seen this as an inspirational. The vibe says you're on a downward spiral to nothing because you can't escape what you're going to become. But then all music is manipulated by the listeners emotions, so it's whatever you want it to be.
The song is based on home life and growing up in an unstable house. His father was a controlling asshole who ruled all and his mother lived in fear of him every single day. His dad held them and put them down in life because he was falling apart. "When i have kids I wont put any chains on their wrists, I wont..Ill tell them this There is nothing in this world you cant be if you want it enough"

This song really spoke to me as a kid growing up with a rough relationship with my parents. I finally got to see them in 2024 and tickets were only $10 bucks and they played to a crowed of like 80 and it just made me sad that people literally don’t appreciate heart felt, and talented music anymore. many new discoverers say SES was underrated. For a 13 year old kid sifting through the remnants of a broken family, trying to understand life with a CD player and an element fiberlite, it was lifeblood. Still listening 22 years later.

Now I’m 33 and I am thankful to have my kids and I am nothing like my mom and I’m thankful for that every day! I broke the cycle!

I remember listening to this back in 4th grade when I first started to get into music. I was addicted to this song and it was the first ever feeling I had of being engulfed by that unspeakable feeling you get when you find a song that vibes perfectly with you. I listened to this first in 2003 on a music website (I forgot its name), and it blew my mind. I did everything to get the CD in my country and I got it a year later. It´s 2021 and still hits my head.

So happy I got to see them live. I went with a friend to a bar in my hometown, not knowing what bands were going to be preforming. Paid twenty bucks and once inside I finally found out they were the band and I proceeded to loose my shit. Smile Empty Soul and Bridge to Grace...it's sad Bridge to Grace didn't make it to more ears.
