- Anime, for many people is synonymous with Japanese pop culture. Those people wouldn't be wrong. However, the social stigma that comes with liking anime in the west is lost in Japan. In fact many embrace the work of their fellow creatives, such as the collaboration between Yohji Yamamoto's Ground Y and Mamoru Oshii's Ghost in The Shell. We take a look at what a collaboration between the two looks like and how anime is portrayed in Japan.

Yohji did a collab with Neon Genesis Evangelion ages ago. I think that was a lot better than the new ghost in the shell collab but both are sick

Omg yes! I'm a die hard fan of GITS and this collab is amazing. Anime and fashion is actually the one thing I pursue to do. As anime is becoming a more popular consensus all over the world, my wish as an artist and as someone who grew up on animation is to create an original brand that fully incorporates anime as the theme.

My first introduction to Japan was my pops collecting katanas and drawing Toshiro Mifune. Later were anime such as Dragon Ball, Saint Seiya, Space Adventure Cobra. Further were 80's samurai sci-fi movies and Sho Kosugi ninja flicks.

First intro to Japan - Kurosawa's Seven Samurai - Age 9 or so. The hand chop off was lit. 😍
Yohji Yamamoto has collaborated very frequently with Kitano, the iconic 'beat' director that gained notoriety with Tekashi's Castle, but became the spiritual successor to Akira Kurosawa's legacy with Violent Cop, Fireworks and Boiling Point. In most of these films, Yohji did the costume design. Makes sense that for his American comeback, Kitano would ask Yohji to collaborate on this project.

I love these colabs. I grabbed a ton of the UNIQLO SJ stuff. Especially some of those Yu Yu pieces. 🔥 Strict-G also does a great job of making well done anime pieces with all their Gundam stuff. Some of those bombers are legit.

This is the best I've seen from Yohji. I like Y3, and can see the skill in his work, but I'm not a fan of the main line. But I'm a huge fan of Ghost in the Shell (and pretty much all of Masamune Shiro's work). And I really like how creative the design are: the images selected, print method, location choices. Love it. Wish i had some. Can Buyee get me there?
And speaking of going deep: who wants to see a Y3 x Outlaw Star collab. Yeah? Or maybe a Japanese designer with a more western theme?
I think its dope plus keeps the line exclusive for a short run. But it also is a reflection of pulling away from the streetwear norm of what it should , or shouldn't be streetwear fashion can never be bottled because it relies on constant change to keep it fresh and innovative

But the first time I was introduced properly was when Pharrell and Gwen Stefani were on that whole Japanese fashion era. Around the time where they dropped holla back girl, can I have it like that, and so on.

I like the cross-discipline mindset you're encouraging here. Everybody should be able to express themselves and infuse their interests into their clothing and it starts at the individual. Once we all adopt the idea that we can all become old men who float around in Yohji lookin like wizards, the floodgates will open!
Literally went to the Uniqlo near me once I heard about the Shonen Jump collab, I saw the prices and it was PHP 590 and I was a bit disheartened because I couldnt afford it and the sizes didnt fit me as well. It was a good thing I went to Uniqlos boys section the collab was worth PHP 390 and the shirts fit me!! 😂😂

This is so dope dude, loving the synopsis. I hope you don't mind me asking though if there have any collabs of the sort with neon genesis evangelion? I looked and couldnt find anything despite it's such a classic, is quite artistic, and has a design team still around pumping out merchandise.

The other pieces were no slouch either, the long sleeved shirt with the print I think is my favorite

As someone that grew up in South America watching anime back in the 80s and 90s, I personally love this. My heart skipped a bit when I saw that the Uniqlo x Shonen Jump had some stuff from Captain Tsubasa and Saint Saiya. Its funny because I was just watching this movie on a read trip just 2 days ago 😅. Wish I had the buying power to get all the pieces.

a lot of vintage yohji and cdg can be bought on grailed, and rakuten, although rak stuff fits small, also if you don' want second hand yoox usually has sales year round on designers like yohji, bought two shirts off there for around 200.
