It seems so funny to hear Trent and Allie say cell phones were only used for texting when they were in school. When I was in school, cell phones didn't exist, computers and internet didn't exist. 😀
It’s weird, isn’t it? When I was graduating high school I got a scholarship from the Aetna insurance company. As part of the acceptance ceremony, they showed us their new fancy computer. It took up a whole big room. And I’m sure it could do far less than your basic iPad these days.
When I was in high school a cellphone was the size of a briefcase and had a corded handset. I got my first cellphone when I was 20. It had an LCD screen and a caterpillar game.
@@Anberel That game was a lot of fun, played it for hours.
I can beat that , calculators didn't even exist when I was at school
Computers were in its infancy when I was in school. My uncle had this cell that was like a wall phone 🤣
Better tell Joel to join a plumbing “club” so he can install all fixtures for his Dad’s adventures in building!!😂😂😂
Trent, "this cart is working"
HD employee, "I can see that".
Just comedy gold.
Geez . . You know you're going in for some wall-shaped & sized stuff. Get the right cart in the first place!
🎉
😳😂
Her comment was priceless!
For possible future problems, keep the access to the tub drain and piping by installing an access panel on the wall in the opposite room.
I think they said last video that there was a reason they couldn't. They will have to pull everything out.
@@ktshorty4808 i remember that, but the framing doesnt really look like it. perhaps it might look ugly depending on where it is, but i'm sure that'll beat ripping out a tiled-in shower 😬
@@dancardin2087 I wish they had explained more.
Having built a home in deep-snow country I feel your building pain. That tub is a super pain. Rather than a 'this too shall pass' mantra you can repeat 'it isn't as bad as a crane dropping a ridge beam'.
Hahaha 🤣 that was epic
Excellent suggestion!!!!
Yikes. I remember gasping as I watched that.
😂😂😂
That was something to see. I will never forget seeing it.
My husband and I had to install a tub 3 times when he tiled the tub surround. First we bought the wrong tub. Then, he dropped a 5lb hammer and cracked the second tub. When we installed the third one, we joked we could do it even if we were just trained monkeys. That was over 20 years ago. I miss those days. Enjoy them while you can!
I love watching Brandon and Grayson's expressions as they try to support Trent through the trials and errors of building. The panic on Trents face for the BHicks was precious. Jennifer and Leo are magic and you Ali are such a talent in recording editing etc. Always brings a smile to my face.
No drywall.. green board!!
Well, that is what I would use in the bathroom…
Trying the common sense route, it seems to me that regular drywall in the bathroom is fine as long as one primes it well first with (oh no!) oil-based primer. I use green (or purple) board, but if regular drywall is already in then priming and painting will seal it well from humidity, no? The house I grew up in had standard drywall installed in 1962. No issues in bathroom 62 years later. Think about it. And Red Guard or Hydro Ban work great behind tile as long as you put enough on.
Hear, hear!
Green board is the way to go.
@@johnbarnas879 I think they have to do it to code.
wonder board behind tile
As an FYI, you should never use any paper type wall board in the shower area due to the likely mold which will happen. Should be at least green board or even better concrete board for the shower area. Just a thought for a healthy family future.
Waterproof means waterproof
Brandon watching and shaking his head is TOP 😂🤣😂🤣
I love how Trent is taking it all in stride and how Allie is not having an emotional breakdown. If I were pregnant and things were going wrong like this I would have been on the floor weeping, but not Trent and Allie, noooo, they are such troopers.
9:08 Trent! That’s a REALLY GOOD senior voice!!
❤😂😂😂😂😂❤
“…we can flip it right now”. Followed by dead silence. 😂😂 ❤❤
LoL!!!
Seeing eamon and bec struggle to find the balance/time for projects and content and battle the guilt of feeling like they should be with the baby instead of building…. Really makes me appreciate what you two have done! 2 videos a week.. building a home.. balancing so many things.. ally doing the editing… it really is impressive what you two have accomplished. Your sister has been such a lifesaver!
Also.. is mountain made still a thing?
it's like watching a small highway crew work in South Florida. One person takes pictures and comments while 2 people watch as another screws up & complains.....
🤣🤣🤣 I keep saying, 'Trent you should just hire a plumber to do this!" But then where's the fun in that? 😂
It's not a vent for the tub. It's an overflow just like a sink that has an overflow. The vent is in the wall and part of the rough plumbing.
I was thinking the same thing.. (i know Google can be wrong)Google even says bathtubs don't have air vents.. they must have gotten the only one with an air vent...
@@chelseanicole994 Yes, always believe everything you read on the Internet!!!
I was fixing drywall and out of the wall fell out a rusty hammer head. Which broke the tub. Builders left it there. Argggggh. Luckily our insurance paid for it.
@@AV8T0R401Lincoln said that
That's what I thought
"Hold me!" That was sooo sweet!
That's not a vent for the tub, that is the overflow.
the over flow/vent will just make the bottom ceiling wet, it has to be connected to the drain
It's both a vent and an overflow
The best decision in the end to tile , will look much better in the end, great patience and humor 😂 that really helps yee get through the frustrating jobs , loved video , well done 👍
Good morning, after a weekend of remodeling my own bathroom, this video made me laugh out loud. I feel the exhaustion, pressure and “I just want it to be done”feeling. I appreciate Trent’s calls for assistance, big strength. Have a good week.
@@mrs.c5471 Plumber terms "waste and over flow " amen .
You were going to hate the tub surround....I made a good living removing them and installing tile....The tub surrounds were orginally designed for the mobile home industry because they are light weight....Good on you for changing...3-4 coats Red Guard will do the job....
keep your eyes on the goal. internet only helps sometimes. I would have put backer board right over the drywall but I am just a cowboy, the tiler has a better idea.
That decision is going to come back to haunt them and it looks cheap!
I was surprised when they were buying that plastic surround, thought why?…
As a mom, I disagree. The tub surround is easier to clean and all the shelves serve many purposes for a kid bath. Additional play space for tub toys, spots to hang on for kiddo to stand, and of course storage space for all the soaps and bath paints. Tile is beautiful, but in terms of ease of upkeep and functionality, I prefer a tub surround like the one they chose.
💯 @@samjensen3596
My great grandfather made his tub and shower. It was all tiled the same as the floor in large pieces of pastel and black chips. Like terrazzo. It was beautiful. 1940's. Timeless.
Tell Joel Congratulations on his graduation!
Maybe Joel can develop the first ever Tub Installation Club..
Good one! Just joking Trent.
Bahahahahaaaa! Epic comment!

My second birth was two weeks late. Had BH contractions a lot and when my second son was born it was so peaceful and fast I couldn't believe how easy it went! It was like my body said oh I remember doing this 😊 hopefully your second experience goes well. I was also more relaxed and easy going with the new born time too! You won't believe how much your heart expands to include all that new love. ❤
Sometimes home builders get tired near the end of a build, and start getting sloppy. Go do some small renos on your new home and hire somone to finish yours while your away.
You can't be serious.
@@lovechild6103that tub install was a comedy of errors. At some point you have to stop the bleeding and do it right. Trent is past that point and is just slapping it together now. He absolutely should hire it out. A real contractor would have advised putting the valves and drain pipe on the other end of the tub. All it would take was reordering the tub for the other presentation. If it was my tub I would rip it out and do it right.
Trent, Feeling your frustration. Ive remodeled three or four bathrooms and my least favorite job is always installing the tub plumbing. First time, left me in tears at about 30 yrs old!! That was after around 10 trips to the DIY store... Hang in there!
❤ Thank you for sharing. I think there’s a lot of pressure on men to be good at everything instantly.
I was watching your video. When Leo was hugging you. I realized I'm was smiling ear to ear
Thank you.
Overflow drain on the tub is important so the tub doesn't over flow. Stops water from flooding bathroom . Water is suppose to flow through it .
As i watched this video of the tub installation, i notice a switch bank within inches of the tub. As it is not against the NEC code in general, we don't place 120 volt switch banks in reach of the tub. The last thing you need is to be standing in a few inches of water in the tub and operating a 120 volt light switch. It does not make for a very good outcome!
The fact that you can have some humor through all of this, instead of flying off the hammer, shows that you guys are gonna be ok. 👌 Maybe a few more gray hairs, but those are our warrior badges.
Going to have to agree with everyone else. That's an overflow not vent and you're correct very old tubs didn't have them. It's to help prevent the tub from being over filled. Your venting should be on the plumbing itself. I hope you aren't hooking the overflow plate to a vent pipe. That would be bad.
Good morning Utahs! You can’t be old, at 64 I’m not old.😁
Good morning, Trent, Allie, Branden, Grayson, Leo, and Jennifer!
That was the best hug ever!
Allie, I think that boy inside you is going to be pretty strong, I loved how he helped you wrestle that box.
Trent ... “don’t film that”. LOL
I love that you video record the reality of DIY installation. The challenges are real and never as smooth as manufacturers installation videos and instructions depict. Thank you all for sharing a true experience! ❤
Your college advice was actually good. Joining clubs, sports, music groups is where many life long friendships are formed. My daughter is going to school full time online. She will be missing out on forming those same type of friendships.
Mines too.
just curious is that a "cost saving" decision? I think one aspect of "school" is learning to interact with others in a group environment. And virtually this is not the same as when people are face to face.
@buyerclub2 For my daughter, it was based on her ability to work while getting her degree without worries of travel time and schedules. Also, the ability to complete her classes from anywhere.
@@elaniehernandez1277 Well if she is already working, she will get that "education" that way. And good for her doing both at same time. Good luck to both of you. I hope this time in her life, turns into something she enjoys. And congrats on graduating!!
My daughter’s decision was scheduling around work. She works as a pre-school teacher 4 days a week and does her school work before and after work plus most of the one day off! She is pursuing a teaching degree! I’m proud of her, but also realize she is missing out on the social aspect. She was in high school during the pandemic, so she is very familiar with online learning. This was and is her choice.
Regarding the acrylic tub surround - Pros: Cheaper than tile, practical, easy to clean. Cons: Ugly, Cheap, plastic-looking (for a custom house) & reminds me of low-end apartment bath/showers.
Totally agree. Having just one bathroom in a house using the plastic tub surround could be the difference between someone buying the house or not. Could also influence the price the home sells for. All I have to see is one tub surround and I wonder where else did they cut corners. You always see tub surrounds in public housing and section 8 apartments. Always tile around bathtubs.
Joining clubs is how you make friends and expand your world. It should happen your entire life! It doesn’t make you old to suggest it.
Trent loves to mock Allie - it makes him feel like a big man.
Why do you watch if that’s how you feel
What are you talking about?
Glad you're going with a tile surround; that plastic surround looked awful. Those lightweight tubs tend to crack; no kids jumping in it! ☘️
I agree it looked awful. I was really surprised that they seemed to like it as the rest of the house is stylish.
Congratulations Joel🎉I have a sneaking suspicion that by the next video the new baby will be here.
You’re hanging like a trooper Allie !!! So proud of how you’ve managed to stay motivated, and working hard to keep things moving on the house project. 🥰
Now, it's always frustrating when things don't work out, but the tile will be the silver lining! YAY for Friends and yay for a tile! I believe it is more aesthetically pleasing than plastic. All the best, Tara
I haven't even watched the video yet, but I already know that my Monday morning is off to the right start the second a T&A video comes online! Love you guys :)
Never have drywall sitting on the tub. Leave a 1/2 inch gap to prevent water wicking up the board.
😂😂 at Trent with the granny voice encouraging Joel to join a club!
Me too! That was the greatest!! 😂
Good morning and happy Monday everyone!! I can't start my day unless it starts with Trent and Allie
Good morning ☀️ For sale, slightly used bathroom surround. Custom. Tub would be great for feeding hogs and other animals.
Hogs would destroy the tub in three minutes
Congratulations Joel!!
I appreciate that you show the challenges as well as the success, that’s real life, I think you will be happier with the tile surrounding, it will look fantastic! Congratulations Joel 🎓
I cried installing that same shower surround.
One of the few things that gets me thru every Monday is a new Trent & Allie video. :)
You did good Trent. Don't beat yourself up, you are trying most people don't get that far.
Yes what is the word on MOUNTAINMADE VANS?
Spout flew off when water pressure wasn’t properly regulated to new low flow shower head. It had the diverter so lately it’s just a copper pipe spout and no shower. Miss our one eyed plumber who died with Covid.
Besides that Trent shouldn’t the bathroom have purple water resistant sheet rock?!?! I really enjoy your videos and your cleverness in so many different projects. Even if you are unsure you continue on and do your best at whatever it is. I was always the same way. I knew a bit about everything and was not afraid to try new things. I am in remission yet the cancer has disabled me now. Keep up the grind!🇺🇸🙏

I may be wrong but when he made the call to Jason, his plumber friend, they decided on another solution of Jason doing several coats of waterproofing instead. They didn’t have time to go back to the hardware store to get the waterproof sheetrock as it was too late in the day.
@@lindafrance9192 different stuff. Purple is ordinary sheet rock only treated for high moisture areas. I’m sure that the waterproof membrane that he uses will be great, however. Behind that and above that to the ceiling will just be ordinary rock. Prone to mold in moisture areas.
Love and hugs Trent....you are doing great!!!!❤❤❤
That’s an overflow outlet not a vent
I took out a fiberglass tub surround and replaced it with tile. Looks better than those surrounds. Just wish i had installed a cast iron tub. The plastic ones do not hold the heat so soaking in them is much shorter.
Those plastic things also look cheap.

Love watching Jennifer and Leo together! Easy to see how much Leo loves and trusts her. Always brings a smile 😊
I have the same tub surround and it holds water and it’s junk! Go with a good tile and you’ll be fine. Trent , I hope you had a great Father’s Day.
I had to do a demo of our master bathroom a couple of years ago. When taking out the tub surround, I found... no drywall, just wood studs. I was a bit confused, but rolled with it.
Trent does not know what he's doing 98% of the time but he is still in the fake it til you make it mode after all these years...God love him. Props to Allie for hanging in there!
Good Monday morning to my favorite Utah family! Great work even though you had to do some problem solving, you made it work. That's a good days work. The surround, I've never liked them so I'm glad you're gonna go with tile
You made the right decision taking out the stupid tub surround. I renovated my house 23 years ago and was talked into a fiberglass tub and tub surround because it would be less expensive and I have hated it for 23 years. Now all these years later when I want to redo both upstairs and downstairs bathrooms the cost is at least 3 times as much as it would have been then. The upstairs tub I tiled around and wanted a wooden accessible front but the damn builder fought with me every step of the way and so far I have been lucky and haven't needed to get to the plumbing but.......The first glitch came when I told him that his carpenters were putting the first of twelve second floor windows in the wrong place. I was adding on a second floor plus attic. They didn't believe me until they checked the building plans and low and behold the 'bitch', as they called me, was correct. Starting out thinking I was just a stupid woman and didn't know anything. It only got worse from there and had I had more experience I would have fired the lot and found someone who saw my vision and was excited about it. I wanted modern and he kept saying I wanted NYC apartment schmansy Well I am a former NYCer but I just wanted clean lines that the architect and I had planned. BTW it took a full year to complete and although we changed some layouts of the first existing floor we only added on about 800 square feet. And although a complete nightmare I absolutely loved the process.
I keep being so impressed by you both, your family, the crew family and of course Leo. May all the rest go smoothly and may all be easy as can be wiith the little one almost here. Love from CT.
The tub faucet being off center is killing me.
It will all work out in the end Trent 😊. It always does. Allie your glowing and that hug from Leo was soooo much love. God’s blessings to you all. 🙏😊❤️
You'll be glad you installed the tub surround with kids (especially boys). You can install tile later (after they are grown). So so so much easier to keep clean.
Good morning! Trent and Allie, Leo, and the working crew. ❤😊

I have become such a huge fan of you guys! Especially since finding out how close you guys live to my brother-in-law out there in Utah. I thought you'd have to use green drywall specifically for bathrooms.
That is what should be done, but come on, this is Trent we're talking about.
Why don't you SIMPLY WATCH the video and hear the TILER advise Trent that dry wall will be fine. It's so unpleasant to have to endure your snarky comments. Why are you even here !!¡
@@heatherclayton-callaghan4270 He said dry wall is OK with a water resistant membrane but not as good as green/blue drywall made specifically for wet areas.
Greenboard (drywall) is resistant to moisture, mold, and is in most places required by code. It seems that Trent too often makes snap judgments based on a quickie internet inquiry resulting in time-consuming do-overs. I suspect these walls will be removed and replaced with appropriate materials if they ever expect to sell the property.
