Berserk 2016: What The HELL happened

- UPDATE/ CORRECTION
I’ve come to regret how I depicted Berserks director Shin Itagaki in this video. I don’t know what happened during the production of this series, and blaming it on the contributions of a single person is an irresponsible and damaging statement to make. I apologize to Itagaki, and for the potential misinformation spread. I will do my best to do better in the future.

@In Regeneratione almost like that was the point of the comment
Let me also add, why the hell do they have filler episodes when the manga has 300+ chapters already. There is no excuse for fillers
That was it for me... their biggest mistake, I watched the first episode, almost near the end I thougt the series look terrible but I could stand it, just because i want to see the rest of the story animated not just the golden era, But at the end when they show that they will destroy the story aswell, I lost it.
they skipped the Lost Children and instead included that stupid pub scene that had already been adapted, did it 100 times worse, skipped the pay off only to include chapter 2, which is completely inconsequential while also tacking on that fucking treemonster. Everyone on the writing staff thinking this was a good idea should just be fired immediately.
Black Swordsman was skipped because while it serves as setup for the world in the manga, it was largely inconsequential and really only spoiled stuff that would happen in the Golden Age which hadn't been entirely planned out yet
It's basically a filler arc
But Lost Children, while being a great story, was clearly skipped because the world just isn't ready for fully animated naked lolis in a non-pornographic show
People think Farnese missing nipples was bad, almost every shot in that arc would have been butchered out of necessity
@@Lazypackmule or you know, you could just take the nipples out as they aren't an important part of her design?

My issue with cg is mostly due to the fps of the animation. It always looks choppy.
A 24fps hand drawn animation looks vastly smoother than a 24fps cgi scene
Matthew Harrington nah, often CG has restricted frame rates, to match the average 12fps character animation is done in
A true 24fps CG would look way smoother, think of something like Disney or Pixar CG films
To me it just feels lazy and kinda disrespectful
@@wordonthestreet5208CG is lazy and disrepectful?

I'm still shocked that people defend the 2016 anime.
bad4ever2010 the only thing that they KINDA improved with the animation is the facial expressions and more 2D scenes than the 2016 one... that was it... Also BERSERKER ARMOR!!! And still the music is breathtaking at best and the action scenes were pretty good and the voice acting was great and the characters though animated poorly, they were still pretty good. And the Story (something that made BERSERK an iconic series) was still pretty good although they skipped a lot of content. So in the end I really found a few things that they did right with BERSERK 2017. And still I can't recommend this to anyone because of various reasons.

Why is it that Attack on Titan, a manga that is very rough stylistically (at least in the beginning) and hasn't been around nearly as long, could get such a great anime, but Berserk couldn't?
Though at the end of the day I can just read the manga and animate it in my own mind. Hooray for imagination.
cause AoT anime was made from Wit Studio which is a good studio, while Millepensee that made Berserk 2016 the only anime they do is moe anime like Teekyuu, Usakame etc. Genba that does the 3D is completely new studio
Phil Lewis because AOT appeals to a larger demographic while Berserk is adults only
Your Mom ehhhh, I guess....., but AOT still has people being eaten alive by naked Giants. Berserk is more mature in that it has nudity, rape, and all that good stuff, but it's still a stretch to say that AOT appeals in that regard.
AOT is mainstream... Many people don´t know berserk. I would say that they put more money in the production for AOT than for Berserk, cause it´ll gain more money
anime fan in the West, AoT became mainstream after the anime adaptation. Berserk is kinda popular, including Japan, otherwise it wouldn't get another anime season. the most crucial part for an anime to get a next season is if the DvD/Blu Ray makes enough sales. in the West, Berserk 2016 in the beginning was 2nd most viewed anime for a while on kissanime(that's not bad at all), but after a few episodes people started dropping it with that shitty animation-art-censor, so the number of viewers/rank dropped. if Wit Studio adapted Berserk and made it as good as AoT, it would become mainstream. it has story, blood, violence, etc. add good animation-art-visuals and the success is guaranteed
for AoT it doesn't matter if it was mainstream so they put more money into the anime. since Wit Studio did the adaptation, the result was gonna be the one we saw either way cause that studio is not Toei
It also doesn't make sense that they are using 2 completely different types of shading....at the same time.
Seriously, the color scheme may have improved if they fucking picked ONE shading technique!
valid criticism, everyone just gets butthurt without even considering what the show does right and I personally enjoyed the story

2D anime at a lower framerate doesn't look out of place because there isn't much movement at all and can often end up complimenting the art style. It becomes really jarring when the whole scene is stuttering along in 3D CG.
There's a reason why we have a standard frame rate for film.... 2D doesn't really have this issue at you can cut corners without really many issues with love action films or 3D you can't do this.

Why would they get some ultra-moe anime directer to work on something that's meant to be incredibly gritty/action horror centred? It makes absolutely no fucking sense to get someone who literally specialises in making the exact opposite of what they're meant to be making. Why would anyone even think it would be a good idea? Is it just me...or has some SJW material polluted this Anime. They have been credited for ruining some "other" entertainment.
My experience was that the show made me physically nauseous, and I don’t mean because I was upset at how bad it was. I mean it made me actually motion sick watching it, I had to watch it in a window 1/4th the size of my computer screen just to stay grounded and not vomit... I feel so bad for anyone who tried to watch this on a full tv.
Also just my 2 cents, it really felt like it was edited by a 2nd year film major trying to show off everything he had learned to do at the exact same time.
I couldn't believe they skipped the Lost Children arc. Hell, I can *still* barely believe it. Yeah, I guess maybe the studio was squeamish about the series' mass appeal if one of the earliest arcs is just filled to the brim with dead children, and I can see why a director so used to lighthearted comedies starring school-aged kids wouldn't want to work on such an arc, but...
...look, I'll get my gushing out of the way first: the Lost Children arc was one of my favorite story arcs in anything ever. It had great characters, great artwork, great action, and it basically did everything right.
But on a more general sense, I think that it was ludicrously important to Berserk as a whole. One of the most memorable features of Berserk was its ability to make the protagonist *frightening*. I still get chills when I look back at the last fight between Guts and Rosine, and seeing things through the eyes of the Knights of the Iron Chain as they followed the Black Swordsman's footsteps made it perfectly clear just how Guts can have such a reputation as a monster when he spends almost all his time fighting *literal* monsters. And on a larger scale, Rosine gave so much depth to the Apostles. The Count was the first example: rather than the unambiguously monstrous snake guy, the Count was every bit as horrific...but when asked to choose between being dragged to hell or sacrificing his beloved daughter to heal his wounds, he chose the former. It gave us a perfect example of not only how the sacrifice system worked, but also how deeply a person has to care for a prospective sacrifice for them to be 'valid.' And because the Count's love for his daughter wasn't affected by his fight with Guts, he wasn't in the mental state that the Beheilt's normally prey upon when they activate.
Rosine, on the other hand, was...innocent, I suppose. It was to a fault, mind you, because throughout the arc, her 'evil' seemed to be more a product of her Beheilt (and Apostle form) turning the imagination she had used to keep herself afloat in an awful home life and then corrupting it into a full-blown delusion. It took a child's developing understanding of morals and twisted it into something more frightening than a hell of a lot of what other Apostles do out of malice, but that was important to see, as was her love for her friend Jill and her reaction to meeting an *actual* elf in Puck. Mozgus went on to do something similar: both he and Rosine showed that understanding the evil of one's actions is not requirement for actually doing them. It also made Griffith more monstrous by comparison.
And Guts? Hoo-boy. This was easily one of the biggest landmarks for Guts' character arc. Puck had been with him for some time now, but this arc was the first time when he actually started to become human again. I mentioned getting chills when I re-read his fight with Rosine, and I think it would be an insult to Miura if I didn't credit his brilliant artwork for it. The contrast between Rosine, even in her full Apostle form, and Guts is just...amazing. When pushed to their absolute physical and mental extremes, both Rosine and Guts seem to lose themselves in what they truly are at heart. Rosine becomes a sad, broken child who realized the extent of what she had done and is reduced to tears of sorry and joy in equal measure when she learns that Puck is an elf, and that the Misty Valley once *did* have an elf village. And Guts...he becomes the Black Swordsman. All his hate and fury and bloodlust warps him into something that Miura does a brilliant job of making both purely human but also more monstrous and terrifying than Rosine herself.
But by the arc's end...Guts is starting to change for the better. If Guts is on a road to becoming either the Skull Knight or Nosferatu Zodd, the end of the Lost Children arc is when he starts moving more towards the former than the latter. Both paths still result in a loss of humanity, but the former is more about physical humanity while the latter is about metaphorical/figurative humanity. The Skull Knight might be inhuman, but of the two Zodd is clearly the monster. The things Guts says to Jill are what makes her resolve to fight to make her little village a place that she doesn't want to run from, and of all the bittersweet arc finales in Berserk, it's one of the only ones to feel genuinely hopeful. And in turn, it led perfectly into the next arc with the Knights of the Holy Iron Chain, what with Guts having been so exhausted physically and mentally by this entire ordeal that they could actually apprehend him.
...fuck me, that was longer than expected. But whatever, in for a penny and all that.
Point is, Berserk 2016 lost a lot of points right out of the starting gate for its janky animation, but I think there were other, deeper problems than that. We get basically no time at all between the end of the Golden Age films and this new series to see Guts as he was during the Black Swordsman arc or the Lost Children Arc, and for the life of me I don't know why. In the manga, we were introduced to Guts as a ruthless monster-hunter who kills Apostles, but does so in ways that make us question just how genuinely heroic he could be. Then we got the Golden Age arc, learned what could make a man like Guts, and went back to the present just in time for the Lost Children arc, to learn what it could take to *change* a man like that.
Instead, we got this. And even the pretenses of Guts' arrest suffer through all this. The Knights of the Holy Iron Chain are tracking him because...why? In the manga, it was because Guts left a long and gruesome trail of bodies behind him in his Apostle hunts. But here, Farnesse thinks he's the not-antichrist, and they found a couple dead bodies, and...I guess the Band of the Hawk matters a lot more in-universe now, because I have no idea why the Vatican would care about a dead mercenary company, however famous they had become.
I've certainly watched worse anime. I've certainly disliked others more than this. But I guess it just felt...disappointing, and when I love Berserk so much, that made it all the worse.
electricbayonet2 I can relate to everything in this comment. Not only is this anime visually a chore to get through, but they skip important parts of the story. Why they skip ANYTHING is beyond me. What’s the rush to blow through the content? I don’t get it. All they have to do is make it look good and follow the manga arc to a T. It would practically print money. It’s both frustrating and disappointing.
That was spot on. I always felt this arc was a turning point for Guts as a character.
There will never be an adaptation of the Lost Children arc. No way any studio will have the balls to animate guts murdering a child apostle.
Lost Children is NOT AN ARC FFS!!! It's a chapter from the Conviction arc

The worst part for me is the hand drawn scenes (as few as there are) are actually pretty damned good. Its just so jarring going from a good, manga accurate Guts close up to some low fps weird pointy chinned cosplayer being filmed by some first year film students.
And oh god the random camera angles, you're so right about them. The latest episode had some pretty horrific camera angle examples, random pan and zoom into part of castle wall then pan zoom out of cage. It looked like someone was learning to use Sony Vegas.
Yeah, its look like theres some actual skill behind those hand drawn sequences, and makes the rest of the show all the more painful
The 2D "animation" if you want to call it that is usually one highly detailed still frame that captures the manga panel. Look at the intro carefully and you'll see that the 2D animation also suffers. I noticed more of it during episode 5 as well. It's funny cuz that one 2D shot of "White Caska" in profile (in the intro...were you see the top of her head and eye opposite of guy's profile) wouldn't even look like Caska if you had given it the proper skin tone. It looks super weird and out of proportion.
One thing that also bothers me about this adaptation is that they totally forget mood lighting on the CGI models. They are lit up like the sun in July, especially in sequences where it's supposed to be dark or has stricter lighting.
Indeed. The 2D animation is very choppy and limited. It's like they put in the keyframes and called it a day. And the fifth episode was really bad when it came to panning the camera haphazardly around what was ultimately a colorized panel of the manga.
The opening is 2d and it is the only good thing this adaptation has.
this is exactly how I felt and it hurts my soul so much that I already love this series so much and I was so excited to see a new adaptation already only to get the full-on disappointment, it's such a magnificent series, it doesn't deserve the shittiness of whatever this was.
keep in mind there is a purpose to the animation quality! its clearly supposed to make us feel the same pain Guts did during the eclipse

Except he was only supervising. The creation of the anime was on the director and their team of animators. They did a shit job, so I'm calling them out on it. This has nothing to do with Miura.
My biggest problem with Berserk 2016 is that its more focused on trying to be shocking and "cool": throwing bad rock music at you while being as overly violent as possible, without having a good, well thought out adult story behind it. That's not to say that Berserk isn't overly violent, but it was also intelligent. It delved into the philosophy of the characters and gave them proper arcs. The 2016 anime feels more like an R rated Michael Bay film minus any good visuals. I don't know if the manga is any better. I hope it is.
Yeah, but apparently if you can't get past [enter any number of criticisms here] then you were never a real fan anyway.
"Guts chops some demons in half and women have a rough time; it's Berserk. Lower your standards and enjoy it." - Desperate fan
The manga is platinum man, you gotta read it.
I have the same problem here - the 2016 version does barely make any sense to me, because it doesnt focus on building characters or the story itself, just hack'n'slash, but no atmosphere. Manga and older series did. That is all. And even though I totally hated entire visual of all three 3D films, I still enjoyed the story, it still felt like Berserk, despite that annoying dancing camera.
It's less a problem with the story and more a problem with how it's presented. I remember reading through the chapters the new anime covers, and when I read them, they were dark, intense, emotional, epic, and all around fantastic. Something about the new anime's portrayal of the story feels off, and it's not just because of the awful animation and directing. Certain moments have lost their punch, threats that were originally creepy are now laughably silly looking, and it all around has the feel of a low quality shonen with blood and Barbie doll nudity. That's not what the series should be and it's certainly not what the manga ever was.
This and this and this and this. The shitty music made it even more unbearable. This is a hollowed out shell of what good storytelling and theme is. Anybody who reads the manga and gets lost in how violent it is clearly didn't read a single speech bubble or...anything. This anime was just reduced into wannabe shonen garble.

The problem is not that it's 3D CGI.The problem is that is shitty 3D CGI.
The problem is not shitty CGI, but shitty story telling and character building.
The problem is the director... Disregards the manga: basically ignored it and skipped an arc or two, used shit CGI. There are shows which have CGI, and yet look beautiful af. The CG in Berserk has the funding of about $50 a month lol

Michael McCallister I agree. But somewhat i trust them that theyll do a fine job , way better than this mess. I just watched Drifters first episode ... They are so good at what they do , GCI or not !
try thinking of giving madhouse Berserk project and how long it would take to get a sequel lol
Trung Phung do you know why anime don't get sequel/new season? cause they don't make enough sales from DvD, merchandise, etc(the manga sales are excluded cause they have nothing to do with anime). if they release another season they will lose even more money than they already have, so they don't release another season. do you know why OPM got season 2(and so fast) even though it's from Madhouse? cause the anime made sales and it's popular. Madhouse would be stupid to not release season 2. especially since the budget for the anime is average. they will still make tons of profit
After finally watching Berserk 1997 (I first refrained thinking the Manga must have aged a lot better than the anime and it would ruin it for me), I'm even more dissapointed in this version.
1997 was terrific; with some gorgeous art work, stellar voice acting and characterization, and it told the story is such a beautiful way. This version... I don't think the people behind it really got what Berserk was about
I usually get bored easily especially by old anime, but it was the slow quiet moments that were the most immersive, being perfectly juxtaposed with everything else. Everyone complains about the lack of motion, but it's compensated with every frame being art and that mskes its poignant moments hit harder.
This Berserk... besides looking terrible, misses what makes Berserk beautiful and heart wrenching. Sure it's a guy with a big sword who kicks tons of ass, but it's the journey he takes with his comrades that is the main draw, and this show misses that.
Where can you currently find the 97’ version? Hey google???
@@nickb1762 i watched it on youtube lol
@@carlton6784 Too stupid or illiterate to read a few paragraphs?
Wait, the same guy that managed to capture the energy and fun of playing a Devil May Cry game completely dropped everything he knew when he started directing Berserk? Passion or not, this is almost like he is just phoning in his directions and leaving the inexperienced crew to deal with it themselves.
Yeah i liked the DMC too!
There's more to Berserk than just energy though, it's something full of subtlety and finesse, as much as you wouldn't think so on first impressions.
Yeah the Manga is truly great, and even the first Anime was good, but Berserk(2016) is an insult.
im just going to say it, devil may cry fucking sucks. nostalgia aside. the art was nicely done and the gameplay was enjoyable. But the story was abysmal in the typical cheesy anime fashion. dmc3 was a joke; dante eating pizza in his comic book store, with his little sword harness bra..💩
anna pham That is because Dante is not meant to be a serious protagonist. Cheesy one-liners, a devil-may-care attitude and some self-awareness of the genre he's in.
DMC3 made him play off against his much more serious and ambitious brother while DMC4 added Nero as a younger, less experienced foil who doesn't yet know when to take a deep breath and keep a cool head.
Also, DMC4 has Dante and a boss enact their pre-fight banter like a theatre drama. The writers were very self-aware of the type of game they were making.

@@Joesire the manga is fkn AWESOME
@@Joesire The manga is awesome. The cgi stuff is kind of a dumpster fire. But it is Berserk nonetheless, so I too had to watch it.
But if the first thing you notice about a piece of anime like Berserk, and especially Berserk of all anime, is that Casca isn't white? That's some unhealthy racial fixation. There's nothing racial about the show in the least bit. Why does it matter anyway? It's a cartoon, a story. She's not like everyone else in the show in that respect for sure and there's reasons, sure. But I mean, the FIRST THING? About BERSERK???
When people who think that like constantly call other people racists as well, when it's literally a guiding force in their decisions and thoughts too, that's nooooot goooooood. I hope you're not one of those buddy.
Fr though. Who gives a flying fuck if Casca ISN'T white??? As opposed to what? Make her chalk white or green for what it's worth. Literally why give a fuck?
@@drewvanni289 haven't watched the new Berserk
But if people changed the skin color of your favorite character, wouldn't you be even a little miffed?
@@drewvanni289I think you may be letting the charged race politics of the present color your supposition on why people would complain about that specific change. It isn't her entire characterization, for sure, but one of the very first and central aspects of Casca's character, particularly in the beginning of the story is just how much of an outsider she is and feels she is.
From her sex to her ethnicity, these are blunt visual signifiers of that aspect of her character. So a change in that aspect is not only an unnecessary and unmotivated change that happens to erase one of the relatively few representatives of women of color in the medium, but it also directly weakens one of the narrative through lines for the character.
Surely there are those who might be mad simply at the race change without that aspect and I can't begrudge people there preferences from an aesthetic or political level, but this is definitely not a case where that is a probable motivator. Just as not all instances of perceived racism might be motivated by intentional racism, neither are all arguments for representation or the lack thereof motivated by political preoccupations.
beastars proved 3D can be done right, Berserk 2016 sucks because it was never meant to be 3D, and because the 3D was done so poorly
i believe the main problem with berserk adaptations, is that miura doesn't give a shit about them; He is the same as araki which stated that he doesn't really pay attention to the adaptation of his work because what mattters to him is the manga, but there are 2 main diffrerences between them:
1) who is doing the adaptation: jojo is being made by an ex-gonzo studio, veterans of the industry and are being directed by a jojo fan itself and a staff that pours it soul in it ( even the off shore korean animators seem to be on it too ) while berserk is being made by the tekyu studio and as you said a moe blob director, hell if they wanted to do it in 3D so bad they could have got Polygon, they are the kings of turning CG into something tolerable and they have pleny of experience in somber works, but they didn't.
2) Miura doesn't give a fuck: Araki doesn't care about the anime, OVA's or games. BUT if he hear that the quality of them could put a negative spotlight on his work he will do everything on his power to stop that ( the phantom blood movie ), while miura just don't give a fuck about anything entirely.
I don't believe he straight up "doesn't give a fuck"... ofcourse nobody can really say what these mangaka are really thinking. Personally I think he had a lack of good offers. I don't think a decent studio would take the risk of adapting such a brutal seinen, with moe blob and shonen taking over the market. And about araki, even he has actually canceled a jojo movie for being really bad. But from what I hear, muira is a very humble and nice guy, and he doesn't seem like the type of guy to cancel a project like this. Ofcourse, this is pure speculation on what I know about the mangaka. I just don't think it is that black and white, my theory is also way more black and white than what probabely caused the decision for this anime adaption to be aired. Or, you know, maybe muira just has shit taste in anime. All in all, I am just worried this anime may give the wrong first impressions to people new to berserk... but I am not to angry. Muira is still a great mangaka, and while a good anime would have been awesome, the manga is good enough for me... until the anime was annaunced I didn't even expect to ever get another anime.
***** yeah, true... forgot what exactely happened with that movie, been a while since I read up on that. Point still stands, araki cared enough to not release it further. But muira has been involved with the anime, he even wrote the entire script for episode 3. That is one thing we do know. The studio was probabely just unable to properly adapt it.
+HushedTerror says Miura doesn't care about his work, doesn't know he supervised the 2016 adaptation all the way down to voice acting and even writing the third episode.
..... I Miura is now with that thing called "Idol master" of something like that xd, because that berserk was in that ship for so many years T_T
FulanoConPsicosis no offense, you are just misinformed. Becouse berserk has gone through so many hiatuses, the internet is filled with rumors about why that is. The idolm@ster thing is just a thing miura has once said he enjoyed, he also once designed a character for it... people blew this way out of proportions, and are now saying he is lazy, and he is only playing idolm@ster. People also just joke about this, but alot of people are taking this seriously. There are multiple legit reasons why guts has been on that boat for so long.

Just finished 1997 series last week and couldn't be more disappointed by this. I wanted so much to keep going with Berserk story and when I stumbled upon 2016 series I was like... yeah, no thanks. 1997 series was great and it's the first time an anime made me feel like actually purchasing the manga, but after seeing the number of volumes and their prices and considering the fact I don't like to read from the screen I was hoping the 2016 anime I kept hearing about was a good continuation. The hell it is. I don't know how someone could come up with this mess and think it's well made or that it does justice to Berserk in the slightest lol
Sigh... I really hope it turns itself around. As a big Berserk fan that's the best I can say. I'll get back into the series another time, maybe after the season is over. But great job on the analysis so far. From what I saw from the comments people are giving you a rough one, so hopefully this luke warm reply to video makes a smirk on your face. Cheers.

120 dollars for a 50 pages book? I guess you never checked how much they actually cost. I mean, I don't know about U.S.A, but in my country it's 5 euros ( about 5 dollars) for a 220 pages book. Yes, it's still a lot ( having the whole series would cost me 190 euros) but it's not THAT expensive.
No money to fund the project. They were left with pretty shitty options.

On the topic of bad CGI:
The Rebuild of Evangelion trilogy (WHEN’S FINAL ANNO!) as magnificent CGI and does look out of place, but they use it to good effect. This, however, is just saddening. I just today caught up with Manga Berserk and I’m breathless. Beautiful drawings! And this just pisses me off. I’ve also seen the golden age movies, and those just kick this joke of an anime’s ass.

This anime sucks, but there is something else we can all agree on. The opening is dope AF
I think that's where all the budget was spent.
let me say it for you correctly, : the story is great, that makes us watch the anime even if our eyes and hearts bleed
100% correct i am here for the not art ,i can watch bleach for that.
+askin askinn Not even that. People always tell me that it's the same story and what not so the look shouldn't matter. But so many people aren't understanding that you can't just adapt straight fromna manga and it turns out the same way. They are 2 different mediums. And this anime is terrible visually and how it CONVEYS the story. The older anime had bad animation but the DIRECTING was GREAT. The directing in the new anime is TERRIBLE choosing terrible art styles, poorly chosen shots. and making scenes feel much different then they were conveyed in the manga that really make me think the people working on this anime don't understand berserk at all.
the anime has like 15 fps ( i say that randomly but it looks like a game lagging af), that's an other reason why it's awful too. And yeah you are right, it's just like adapting a book into a movie,it cannot be the same, and some people fail understanding the book / manga and they can't transcribe it into an anime here or a movie ...
People have no right to complain about Black Clover’s animation when this hideous garbage exists 🗿
It is pretty bad the manga looks good though
The Black Clover animé is good but the sudden drop in quality when a huge fight happens is a turn off, take Asta vs. Ladros and Yuno vs. Rill
Honestly I hate to say it but I'm not too optimistic about anything new coming from Berserk that isn't the manga. After such a catastrophic anime adaptation I don't think anyone is willing to invest anything into another one.
"Why is Caska white ?" As a Caska lover myself, I feel you...
It's not that 3D is inherently bad, it's just that it's bad for Berserk. Berserk atmosphere is medieval, rough and violent. 3D just doesn't click with it. At least not if it looks like 3D. Some talented people can make 3D look like 2D like in Fire Emblem cutscenes or in Guilty Gear's anime. This could work.
3D that looks 3D is more suited for a show like Bubuki Buranki or Etotama.

to be fair *Spoiler* when the anime reaches the Tower, Casca is her usual skin colour.
because she has been outside again. I don't get why people are crying when they are paying attention to how your skin color changes form exposure to the sun..
She spent a shit ton of time in a cave so last her tan and got pale, then she runs away and ends up there with a tan again...tada its fucking magic.
I have no idea where people get the idea that caska spent the entire two years in a cave, or how they think that shes the only character in the show who gets a tan, it literally blows my mind
you dont get that brown from a few weeks to a over a month outside. the Afrikaners are still quite white, whiter than Casca after generations in southern africa.
+Super Eyepatch Wolf What do you mean? It's outright stated that she did spend two years there. The cave is magical and it prevents demons from entering, so they had to lock her in there so that she doesn't wander off during the night and get attacked.
What he's saying is: CASKA IS A BLACK WOMAN.
Also wanted to add as someone who animates both in 2D and 3D: All the artistic rules are much easier to apply to a 2D image, when adjusting composition is a matter of redrawing a line or two directly in the camera view, while in 3D you have to move, rotate and scale things around in a three dimensional space, while often looking at the end camera result in another view than the one you are adjusting the object on. This also goes for the shapes: In 2D you just draw the character in a cool pose without a concern of anything that's outside the camera, while often in CG things clip through each other and rigs break. Even though there is much from 2D I can apply to 3D, it's really a lot harder in my opinion to pull off since 2D is so directly linked to the end result.
To be honest, i started Berserk with 2016 anime and watched the first 3 chapters. "This show is amazing!" i tought, actually, i really liked it since i had never read the manga. It wad not tye BEST i had seen but i did tought it was quite good, the story hooked me and the characters and world dessig had left me a strong impression. After watching the 3rd chapter of the cg anime i was not patient enought to wait next week, and like that, i went to read the manga, before next week chapter had aired, i had read around 300 chapters (i had to reread many chapters and stop to observe some pages detail by detail)
When i started watching 4th chapter of the cg animation i closed it in less than one minute, wtf, after reading the manga i could not look anymore to the anime
Rahziel {Ouma The Cinnamon Roll} i think that is the real main problem here , one does not simply read the berserk manga and like the animated adaptations better , that thing is a miracle . i watched berserk 2016 after reading the manga and i think the only reason i tolerated it and sort of liked it , is that i was completly convinced in my heart that it will be too far from the manga , BERSEK IS ANADAPTABLE (if you want it like the manga).
What about the previous Berkserk animation with the Golden Age Arc. I thought it was very well done and was expecting upgrades to the 2016 version, which didn't happen. Nonetheless, the first one was really good, it just needed some tweaks and some badass animated action scenes.
"Explain why Berserk 2016 is bad"

Japan does shitty cg that's what happened
UPDATE: I watched Land of the Lustrous, I take this comment back
Not really. If done correctly, the CG in anime can be really amazing... as long as it is in support of the regular animation.
Full CG? Yeah, well. That just looks as horrible as an average American cartoon.
MaJuV yea when its good the cg looks great the thing is most of the time we get shitty cg so yea. Also american cartoons usually use cg pretty well since they usually are able to put more money and time to making the animation look good
UfusDsnake And here you address the key factors why the CG in this TV-series suck so hard. Time and money. I think it was Satoshi Kon who once said: "For every 10 minutes of movie you make, you have the same budget as for 3-4 episodes of an anime TV-series." In other words, you can only make with what you got.
MaJuV yeah but the only reason thats the case is because the anime industry values cuantity over quality way to much and because of that well have shitty cg for a while
True that.
"I’ve come to regret how I depicted Berserks director Shin Itagaki" - here's the thing... if he was in charge, as you suggest, then the responsibility falls on him. If someone was in charge of him, twisting his arm to make decisions he didn't want to make, then the responsibility shifts to them, though he's still responsible since he can choose to stay in an environment like that, or he can leave. Maybe he did his best, despite challenges. Who knows.
Either way, Berserk 2016 was shit, and we shouldn't pretend it wasn't. Maybe if the company behind it took responsibility, like people who care about users should, you wouldn't need to speculate about what happened. But they didn't, to my knowledge, so you did.
At the end of the day, these people are making a product, and if people are releasing shitty, poorly made products, we're all worse off, and you could even consider it unethical. Imagine if we had a world where, instead of peddling constant shit for profit, people were dedicated to doing things well and infusing them with care, love, and passion. What a world that would be. It's fine to experiment and practice and get better, but I see too many people and companies using commercial products as a way to do that. I find that unethical, troublesome, and detrimental. If lesser quality works are released, they should be priced accordingly. Surprise, Berserk 2016 will likely be priced similarly to much better made things, which again, is unethical.
You could perhaps, in future, not state things as if you know what happened if you don't--that's an important thing to do. Notice how I use terms like "likely" and "may" to make it clear that certain statements aren't statements of fact. But it's fine to speculate, and it's also fine to point out inconsistencies and call something poorly done if it is.
It's good that you care, and we should treat each other well. But don't let that hold you back from making strong statements that may or may not be popular. For more on that, read the great "Writing well" series by David Sirlin. Also see his great article, "The Sheathed Sword in Software Development," where he talks about it matters to design things well from the get go, so you don't end up with something shit and cause unnecessary suffering later on.
I think your video had value, even if minor parts of it could have been executed better. Judging by the over 1 million views you got, it seems other people also feel it had value. (Views don't always = quality, but for an obscure topic like this, I feel it's a good indicator.)
I would just like to add that no,he might not have been able to just quit-- he could have been blacklisted from the animations industry for doing so,and could've been jobless for a long long while.
@@justbny9278 fair point, though that's a fault of the industry. Imagine if you were working for a company that was supporting the bastardisation of a popular or notable work, and you quit in protest or to not stain your reputation by being involved in it, and you get backlash. that's pretty messed up. The right response is, "thanks for not supporting that bad project."
It's also possible he did the best he could given the situation he was in. Either way, it's a shit situation for Berserk fans.
@@justbny9278 who on earth would deliberately wanted to make a shitty, horrid product just because? u lot talking like the studio was being pointed with a gun to make this look like shit, that's just denial, they didn't think it was shit, they believed them product was good and well made lmao
@@nick.king4 I used to think in that same fashion, then I got my dream job, and realized it’s the exact opposite of what you said. We’re all self-aware, but we’ve no choice but to make shit until we can move up in the industry
I think 3D animation can be used quite effectively when it's both subtle and mixed in with stellar 2D animation.
I know you'll agree with me when I refer to the fight between Rock Lee and Gaara in Naruto. I'll always use this example because while the characters were 2D, their setting was 3D and I feel this is the most effective use of 3D when it comes to animation. It should be used to give the world more depth and make the environments fleshed out to give us a real sense of the space. I have never really enjoyed it on characters and I'm about 50/50 when it comes to vehicles and mechs.
This isn't a hard and fast rule. I've really enjoyed RWBY for the most part, which is entirely 3D, but it did take a few season before they really had a good feel for the animation style and for the story to finally come into its own. But, for the most part, animation like seen in 2016 Berserk doesn't use 3D in those subtle and effective ways, making the whole thing feel very bold and looking a little ugly. I hate judging something purely for visuals since, when I discuss games, I tend to focus on gameplay and story and treat visuals as second nature... when its a film or show, all it really has beyond the story is the visuals. And they really don't mesh well in this series from what I've managed to slog through. Idk if it got better in 2017.
Look at Ufotables Fate adaptations. Those are breathtaking in animation, especially with fights containing huge detail, not just at the faces but their bodies and weapons. Look at One Punch Man, the extreme amount of detail Madhouse put into the face of Saitama and the enemies he fights. Look at the early 2000's Bones shows like Eureka Seven which have hundreds of explosions going off while the Nirvash dodges missiles and lasers at such speed. It's beautifully detailed. Madhouse, Bones, Ufotable all could do a different but still great adaptation of Berserk though Ufotables style would fit Berserk as much as Madhouse's.
I'm not disagreeing with you, but I do want to add onto what you're saying. Ufotable and Madhouse adaptions often have massive budgets. Fate Zero, which uses cgi at times (it looks great) had a fucking mammoth per-episode budget and I can only begin to fathom how enormous the budget for One Punch Man was. And even with One Punch Man that had some animation problems at around episode 7-8 (I cant remember the exact episode off the top of my head). It's pretty obvious that the studio working on Berserk don't have much money to work with, so it would probably have a couple of animation problems regardless of the studio working on it. I mean why else would they choose to have a blend of CGI and 2d than for budgetary/time reasons? I doubt even Madhouse could do a One Punch Man with a 1/10th of the budget. I have been surprised though, they managed to have great animations for HxH which was something like 140 episodes, so stranger things have happened.
With this said if Ufotable worked on it with one of the directors associated with that studio the direction and pacing would be WAY better. The 1997 adaption had the budget of a ham sandwich and it still turned out great because the people knew what the fuck they were doing (From making Pokemon to making Berserk, who would've thought).
+camzore Yea, budget is a huge problem when it comes to Berserk. Berserk really just needs a large budget that's enough to allow them to animate the show in 2D but with CGI fight scenes
+camzore Actually, apparently the OPM budget was fairly mediocre and its great animation was due to the passion the animation team had for the project.
TehPlatipusGuy Colour me pleasantly surprised, it's nice to see that the industry can still make great things without throwing large hunks of money around
I agree with you but what do you mean when you say ufotable's style would fit berserk as much as madhouse's? That none of them would? I think madhouse could achieve a fairly good result albeit not as detailed as the manga.
*It's like they just decided to use 3D cause it's the "in" thing without calling Pixar to learn how to make the most out of 3D animating. This looks worse than student demo reels.*
I've recently watched first two series of Hellsing again and I feel like quite the same happened to the Ultimate version of it: staging, direction, speechwriting, logic, visuals - EVERYTHING failed. I think it could be really interesting make a comparison of the first episodes scene by scene, tells a lot about things you try to explain about visual storytelling. Btw, really cool channel I was really glad to discover it yesterday. Thank you for your work!
"Even though this is shitty berserk, its still berserk."
No... Its just shitty berserk.
That makes no Sense..
@@ObitoUchihaisgay tbh it makes a lot of sense xD
lol it looks terrible, you just cant watch it, that's the issue. oh and they changed the story.
How did they change the story?
ProtottypeGreek introducing people at the wrong time, skipping an entire arc of explanation and good story.
Skipping an entire arc isn't changing anything? They barely changed it and if you are going to knit pick the old anime changed shit to then.
ProtottypeGreek lmao. and you're a little boy who doesn't understand story telling.
Wtf, you don't understand time and how it works. 8 Harry Potter movies and there was so much shit cut it wasn't even funny. You dumb ass geek.
Can we hit the do-over button on this anime and get better animation. The 1997 series looks better!
I feel terrible for Kintaro, man’s dead and pretty much all of the adaptations of Berserk have massive flaws. Original series has little animations, movies have bad 3D, and 2016 series is *insert this video. Man never lived to see a great adaptation of Berserk
who is "Kintaro"?
I love reading comments about Berserk, its like watching people fight over the window seat on a crashing plane
Kick starter for MadHouse to redo Berserk!
@Sparky KMAS yeas
read the manga guys
When you listed the two possible problems, it’s a combination of both. They made 24 episodes with the budget of 12, and then the director wasn’t for for the directing of something so still like Berserk
2016 has just been a clusterfuck in general.
At least we have JJBA diamond is unbreakable, AND THE F U C K I N G STRONG has finally made his appearance.
Its kinda good for mecha thou. I actually like Schwarzesmarken and Kuromukuro
+Red Hood Yeah dude I am happy JoJo is getting a worthy adaption. I enjoy every episode.
we got food wars season 2 and danganronpa 3 this season which are both good.
Eh hh I actually like food wars manga.
My problem with it is how stuttery the whole thing looks. Like a game running at 10fps.
One of my problems is, that every time Guts swings his sword, it makes the same sound effect, which was pretty bad to begin with, I know this sounds very pedantic but it really bothers me, aside from that Guts does not look physically imposing at all in the new series. Not to mention I feel like it is trying hard to impress me, with all the action, it feels like Michael Bay adapting the Illiad, yes there is epic action, but that is not the point of the story. I am really hyped for the next video, maybe it can get somene into reading the manga, before trying the new series and getting the wrong impression.
I the sound is a 100% valid criticism and not pedantic at all.
Haha holy shit, that Michael Bay comparison is so apt
Why you should watch Berserk vid will probably take a little while (I need to rewatch and re read a bunch of it) but it's definitily happening
The camera work in Berserk 2016 and Berserk 2017 is proof that sometimes less is more. Both shows were moving the camera way too much in an attempt to make scenes look better when in reality they made them look worse. 3D animation does provide an opportunity to make some really cool shots that you can’t easily do with 2D animation, but you need to remember to ask yourself if you’re moving the camera because you think it will improve a scene or because you think it will look cool.
Quality over quantity.
