It's details of atmosphere of world. Presentation of gut's emotions through his face for everyone especially for Griffith tell more about his complicated feeling towards him and his complicated attachment and conflicted feeling towards his quest at same time than anything. Attention in detail is far more bigger storytelling device for miura than anything.

your logic is flawed. You act like there is one big company that collects all the money from Berserk content: manga, dvds of the old anime, dvds of the movies, merchandize etc...sorry to burst your bubble, but said company doesn't not exist. The only one collecting money is Miura...which apparently is not interested into founding a new anime with his money. Each new anime has different people investing money in it. Berserk is not that profitable or popular compared to other animes, even the Berserk movies didn't go so well in Japan. The only people willing to invest money in it this time were not rich enough to give the job to a good studio, that's why we got a shitty adaptation.
This anime is so shit Miura panicked and came back from hiatus to continue the manga.
He made a mistake. He's just giving more material for this studio to make more seasons.
Or maybe he's doing it to prevent them to make filler arcs which would make it even worse.
At least something good came of this. The Real berserk can now continue.

Im not even a big Berserk fan (still getting into it) and most of the arguments of people defending the 2016 series are stupid.
"Berserk is not about the visuals" and yet his author is one of the best visual artists not only in manga but in the world and the manga itself is praised for the quality of his drawings in both technique and design.
"The animation is not important" then why on earth are you watching an anime if you don't care about animation? just stick to the manga that "has no importance in terms of visual design"
Berserk is a visual story simpy for being a manga, the anime is a cinematic story for being animation, yes the script is goood but only because the manga script is also good so no original merit there, and while the script is good the terrible animation distracts from it, instead of paying attention to it I'm more concerned of why this show has less production value and quality than an avarage ps2 cut-scene.

I loved Berserk 2016 because it was my first experience with Berserk and, though the animation was sickening, I didn't have its originals to base it off of. I just thought Guts was a fantastic hero, Father Magus was a fantastic villain, and the story as a whole was spectacular. I still rewatch 2016 at least once a year because of how it made me feel the first time.

original '97-'98 anime is great, aside from them intentionally leaving it on a cliffhanger to serve as a promotion for the manga. which worked on me so I guess hats off to them.

I belive the reason is because berserk contains alot of gore , nudity and shit like that , so if there was to be a good adaptation ,it would be 18+ ,so that means less viewers.
i never understood why the argument "better than nothing" is said and backed by many people. "Better than nothing" implies that Beserk is niche, or underrepresented in the general media.
That argument only really works for something that is truly niche, like manga or anine about skateboarding. With that, you can make an argument that a skateboarding manga "being better than nothing". Because literally there is little to nothing about the subject.
Berserk on the other hand has recieved nothing but praise and recommendations from people who truly love the series. It's nothing niche at all, therefore the argument "better than nothing" falls by the wayside.

You could say "people don't care about sound design!" but if the lip syncing is off, the sound effects are louder than the characters, or the wrong sound effects are used, you'll notice. So yeah, you _do_ care. You just won't notice unless you're looking for it or it's _incredibly_ bad

If it were genuinely terrible, I'd agree, but it's not. It's merely "good" but not exemplary, a fact which seems to have escaped most of the manga purists here. I'll put it this way: I'm new to Berserk, and have absolutely no interest in manga, so a *good* adaptation in a medium I can stand, is still quite a bit better (for me) than the excellent original in a medium I can't.
I can understand that. Not everyone will have access to the manga so they can only depend on the next best thing. But it still doesn't excuse the decisions made in this adaptation. Now, for people who have gotten used to watching 3-D based anime might accept this a little better. But this is still supposed to be an adaptation of a well loved and beautifully illustrated story. And, like yourself, for people new to Berserk, deserve much better. I've watched Knights of Sidonia. I enjoyed it. But this kind of style just doesn't fit Berserk. That's just my honest opinion.
Also, this series has had some beautifully drawn moments. But that's the issue. There are "Moments." I'd rather the whole anime look like that. :)

"It's better than nothing" is one of the most meaningless argument you can make about anything. It's not "better than nothing" if you wasted money or valuable time on it, while you could have done something much more interesting or productive. It's not "better than nothing" if by virtue of its existence, you're not getting something actually good instead. I'd imagine there's a lot more incentive to adapt a manga in anime format when there isn't already a preexisting anime adaptation.
Also, pretty insulting for the artist to pretend that his work isn't about the visuals.

5:43 Considering that the '97 adaptation of Berserk exists, this is a terrible way to excuse Berserk 2017.
The '97 anime was made with economy as its first priority but I don't notice how limited it is unless I really pay attention because attention to detail and articulation was a close second (it also helps that the story is so engrossing).
A big one of 2016/17's problems is that its animators, being in a position that was the complete opposite of OLM crew, were woefully inexperienced and much too eager to play with the tools and gimmicks that came with their software.
One scene in 1997 looked pretty off. Some soldiers have red blue and purple armor. They're pants are those colors too. Next shot they're beige. Ok fair enough. Then they repeat a previous shot and the pants go back to being red blue and purple. It's something you notice the first time and say " alright, budget restraints" but making them the correct color in the next shot then going back to the incorrect colors is super weird.

What? Read? Why would I want to READ one of the best comic books ever made, instead of watching an anime adaptation that could never possibly be as good as the source material?
I was a huge Dark Souls fan and the inspirations from berserk got me really interested. So I watched the golden age movies and the 2016-17 anime and was hugely disappointed. Which then made me go and read the manga which is unbelievably better.
The movies were pretty aight and you saw the potential they had when guts left the band of the hawk and fought griffith

Unfortunately, the fight scenes are ugly and are hard to tell what the movements are.
Master chief 117 Now.. best drawn is not really true, sure the art style is expressive as hell. But there are lots of moments where the characters just are stiff due to the amount of detail put into it. In my opinion I think Hunter x Hunter has a way more intriguing art style due to the simple yet expressive drawings Togashi illustrates. Although you do have a point with that the drawings of Berserk are a major component of the series.

Cynical Chimp - I mostly dislike the detailed art styles as the mangaka's have less freedom to make the body very expressive. Ofcourse Berserk has a beautiful art style emotion wise, but most action scenes or dialogue scenes look stiff. Ofcourse this is my opinion, this doesn't mean you have to agree with me. Just a certain way of thinking about Berserk's art style and the way of drawing in general.

That i do agree, better director and better animation, this series took is time from the 90's arc to this arc to be animated, now pretending each panel to be exact as the MANGA is VERY VERY HARD and VERY VERY expensive, Wit Studio and Production I.G both almost went bankrupt animating shingeki no kyojin trying to make it as near as possible to the manga and the graphs, 3D and animation is HUGE, that is what mr Super Eyepatch Wolf and of course he likes Bleach, so he expects Tite Kubo art and animation style as Pierrot studio, but this is not bleach nor shingeki no kyojin, THIS IS BERSERK 29 years of MANGA, so Super Eyepatch Wolf if you want complain write directly to Liden Films, Inc.

FMA is better than FMA Brotherhood, much better. And that's due to similar reasons why this adaptation of Berserk is worse than any other (although FMA Brotherhood is still great as fuck, while this...).
I think what's even more depressing is that the stories from Berserk that are over 20 years old would already need a reboot 2 years into the game. I'd be the UTMOST HAPPY if Studio 4C just continued making films of each arc. Maybe a film series of ten movies might be weird but it'd be better than this humdrum of nonsense.

i think your reference to the jojo ova is honestly perfection to show how visuals do definitley matter to a show, but it isn't just something simple like being 3D or 2D or even the animation quality to an extent, as the JoJo OVA's are fricking unbelievably animated that is just shocking to watch for how good it is, the characters feel so alive and shot composition is often seriously creepy and eary that makes a realistic tension throughout... But, Jojo is litterally as far from realism you can get, the ova's visuals may be amazing but it doesnt do anything to assist the wildness and fun that the story and later Anime would provide through the more stylised approach.

Thats...actually a really good point, why does the author/illustrator go through such lengths to make a story instead of a book even now when his health is declining and keep updating monthly and then going on hiatus for months on end. even in books we use setting, describe the setting, use metaphors to set tone & mood to paint a picture in your head so you get a better understanding of how it feels to be in the place of the story. visual is everything, even in words.
Or the fact that you can tell a compelling/fun/interesting story with little to no dialogue. Mind you, a good book can "paint a picture" in your head. i'm not saying the art is MORE important, simply that its equally important. Especially with a visual medium like manga and anime, if the art and animation is bad then that means we're only getting half the experience we should be getting. Why would anyone be happy with half the expected product?
Especially interesting about the people who say that the visuals dont matter and that its all about the story...then just go read the manga. its further along than the anime, so you'll get more story with the added benefit of incredible visuals. So why consciously go for the anime? Because those people are either
1) metaphorical slaves of "berserk" and will consume it in any form, even while covered in dog shit
2) those people who allegedly only say story matters, dont want to READ the story (ironic considering they are probably reading subtitles) and want to SEE the story take place. they are here specifically for the visuals, to see a story they love in full motion. And they STILL not only accept this shitty visuals, but have the audacity to tell everyone else that the visuals don't matter, even though that's EXACTLY why they are here. They can't even say that they read the manga and are just re-experiencing it here...cuz they can still go re-read the manga again and NOT have shitty visuals. Uh.. yes they do. Even if they don't realize it. Your average movie goer who knows nothing about cinematography will still subconsciously notice when it is bad. When a movie has poor geography the viewer gets confused because they are trying to connect the dots themselves to where characters are in relation to one another. Bad cinematography leaves the audience lost. Good cinematography makes sure the audience always knows where everything is, where the characters are standing, where they are facing, where they are in relation to each other and the environment they are in. In a good movie every shot should clearly convey these things to the audience. And even if idiots like this guy do not consciously realize it, it provides a much better viewing experience for him.

Cloud Chan it is pretty common practice among fanservice/ecchi anime's like prison school etc but to be fair I think network TV would censor it outright for broadcasting reasons.

You may not actually care about the technical or theoretical aspects of it, but your brain notices it. It's like bad graphic design: you may not notice it when it is good, but you sure as hell will notice it when it is bad. A bad direction can render something with a great story and great acting unwatchable. It can make it impossible to understand or cause it to have such a terrible pacing it can make the most interesting things in chore to get through.
