When I was coaching JC tennis these are the type of matchups I would generally see at the 6=7 spots. Very consistent and patient tennis. Personally, I love it. These guys are machines!
Back in the day I’ve played a couple who played similar to this. You warmup with them and say to yourself this is going to be a cake walk and than you play. No matter your shot it come back like a backboard . No pace slight spin. They frustrate you and you mark silly mistakes.

I was worried that the Universe might implode if two MEPs play each other. Seriously though, red shirt has a rock solid net game and is good on the overhead. It's not accurate to describe him as a pusher. He is actually quite aggressive in looking for opportunities at the net.
Great, great match! As a coach, this was a joy to watch because of the "chess-match" that was going on. The first set 4-4 game was key. MEP Atlanta hung in there and found a way. From there, he was just dialed in. Here's the thing - MEP Atlanta has offense. When he needs to, he'll dial up the pace of those chop forehands. The varying pace can become unpredictable. MEP Seattle did well (a could've easily won the first set) but MEP Atlanta knows how to raise his game when it counts. "Raising your game" is an x-factor intangible type of skill that not many players have. Awesome stuff 👍
Excellent summary in my book. One thing MEP-Atlanta has that I find difficult is the varying pace and the disguise with drop shots, lobs, passing shots and basically all his forehands as he sets up the same way to hit all of them. Can’t read his forehand.
The beauty of MEP is this. We have ALL played an MEP before and we will never be the same again. My first MEP was a guy named Curtis. He bunted EVERY BALL back into no mans land with no pace, no spin - oh and each ball was the same a half moonball. Zero variety. I lost so badly I wanted to die. LOL.. We must all go through this. I was a 3.5 at the time, and let me be clear to MEP (Ben). Curtis my MEP, was no where even close to the skill level of Ben. Ben would have eaten Curtis alive. The point was, I had never seen anyone present me with soft high balls, and just wait to watch me self destruct. Beautiful. :)
Sorry, I'm not sure what the tennis scene is like in Atlanta, but I don't see how this guy can have such a dominant record at USTA 4.5. Every 4.5 player I've seen can hit well enough from both wings that they would regularly punish these short dinks he plays, because he often has poor court positioning after he plays them (regularly in no-man's land).
Great battle of two titans. Really interesting to see how much offense these two "pushers" demonstrate once they realize they're not going to get free points just by extending the rally. I've watched a lot of Green MEP matches, and I had no idea that he had so much volley game. Red MEP's overhead was obviously awesome since Green MEP stopped lobbing. Red MEP also was really good at reaching drop shots, and poking them deep into the corner --- sadly for him, Green MEP's passing shots seemed especially sharp this day. It seemed to me that the most critical difference between these two was: 1) Green MEP got back more "emergency" balls where the opponent hits a good attacking shot, especially in the first set; and 2) Green MEP seemed to be more able to dictate the terms when defensive patterns would shift to offense -- once he determined that he could win the majority of battles at the net, a lot more points seemed to play out there. I'm sure Red MEP must frustrate and destroy many opponents at home, but on this day, he met his match. Kudos to both for a great match.
A Pusher Academy, you got to be kidding me. we hit the ball over 100 mph and have to always stay alert, and these guys are pushing the ball like an old shopping cart going down the isle at 2-10 mph while we are all falling asleep at the wheel as mind numbering rallies continue to go on and on.
@@PURETENNISsense Yes I use a big heavy flat pronation slice drive that allows me to drive slice the ball at 100 or more mph through the court which is a bit nasty. I learnt how to add the heavy flat pronation into the slice drive from looking at one of Jeff's Salzenstein's videos on improving the backhand slice. Then once I learnt how to do heavy pronation for the backhand side, I applied it also to the forehand side to get the best of both worlds. I do hit the topspin drives also as well, but I prefer slice driving with light or heavy pronation because it keeps the ball nice and low skidding all through when I want to place it around the court.
MEP on MEP matchup is a fascinating one to watch, as both of them are used to feast on harder hitting players who will make mistakes against them ... FASCINATING (and I played the Seattle MEP - he is truly tough to play, moves you north-south a lot ... and his DL backhand is truly good - he didn't showcase it here)
One reason I didn’t pull the trigger on DTL 2hb in this match is that I have a high strike zone. I prefer a moderate pace topspin ball chest high, so that I can flatten it out. To his credit, MEP gave me mostly low stuff around my knees, which took away one of my favorite shots.
The "rally" that starts at 15:50 (and ends at 16:25!!!) is the stuff of legends, including the world famous moonball attack by the SLEP and three smashes!!! 😂😂😂😂😂 Ps. It is also my recurring nightmare...!!
At some point, one of you has to want to use good mechanics somewhere deep inside your cyborg pusher brains😆 Then again..I’m sure RF is at home on RUclips saying, “I had it all wrong man!!” Just kidding guys, you both have very smart games and this is why so people are watching! Great stuff!
A bit rude comment by me when I read it again. Second set is cool to see that Ben/MEP crushes his opponent that has much better net play then him. Ben has really good tactic and would beat me and many lower 4.5 easy. Even tho his technic looks the way it does, his shots is harder to perform and he has very good accuracy with his forehand. It looks much worse then it is, but its many tennis hours behind.
MEP Seattle (in orange) has a pretty decent smash, so he attacked and finished many high balls quite successfully. They deserved to meet and play each other, kudos to both players and the channel)
Both players played well in the first set. It could have gone either way. I was impressed with Seattle's overhead on short lobs, particularly in this set! In the second set, Seattle seemed to either get a bit tired or maybe just lost focus somewhat. I still think that players against MEP do him a favor giving him slower topspin shots which allow him to hit down on shoulder-high driving backspin shots which stay low. That is kind of MEP's bread and butter offensive shot. I would think it would better to keep the ball low against him when possible to force him to hit up... I would think in a rematch that even if MEP lost the first set, he would be the favorite in a three set match....
We had agreed at the start of the match that if we split sets, we would play out a full third set. The way the first set ended (with MEP's amazing escapes on game points in the last 2 games, after it felt like I was finally finding some momentum), was a mental shock. And MEP was able to play more freely and offensively after that with a set under his belt. With my focus dropped a notch, and his confidence level boosted, the 2nd set went pretty fast.

Nowadays, very rarely. In high school, when my style of play was very different (S&V both first and second serve), I broke strings every 45 minutes until I switched to Problend.
Fun to watch. I like your channel. Thanks. IMHO, the strengths or weapons that these MEPs have in common are tenacity, patience, mobility, economy of motion, endurance, consistency and ball placement. MEP Seattle has a very good overhead. Not sure about MEP Atlanta's overhead. Even though this is all very good stuff, I think that the 4.5s in our (non USTA) league would be able to beat them. I'm in the lowest division, by the way, so none of this applies to me. Even when I was in my late 20s in the early and mid '70s, and maybe about a 4.0 or 4.5 USTA equivalent for those days (and I'm being predictably generous with my assessment of myself), I'm pretty sure that these MEPs would run me to exhaustion. Anyway, the reasons that I think that our 4.5s would beat these USTA 4.5 MEPs is because they share all of the good stuff of these MEPs plus almost all of them are in their 20s and 30s, their mobility and endurance is even better than these MEPs, and their serves and groundstrokes are more forcing weapons. But I could be wrong about that. I've played, and lost to, lots of deceptively efficient and effective players, and these MEPs are definitely efficient and effective. Sometimes quite deceptively so. It's always tough to play MEP type players. Their games are much more diverse and polished than the pushers and/or blockers of lower divisions. Also, it's quite an accomplishment to reach, and win in, USTA 4.5 no matter where it is.
@@sportscastercanada Yeah, the limp/dead right arm is what gives him the truly unorthodox look that most people can't seem to identify why it looks really 'different'. Val Wilder who played on the pro tour also hits with a limp off-racket arm, same look.
These two are extremely skilled. People who have weak technique and strategies blame pushersfor their losses all the time. They are better than you that is why.
No, they’re not. MEP is highly skilled within a very narrow bandwidth of skill. He’s definitely a difficult player to beat but mostly because he doesn’t play against highly skilled players. A really skilled short order cook is not the same as a skilled chef. That said, I admire his tennis IQ and find his matches enjoyable to watch.
MEP is a 4.5 rated player which means he is better than 90% of tennis players. I think that's highly skilled. It's not pro level, but it's pretty darn good.
@@michaelp9061 I would love and hate that at the same time. As I’m now in my 60’s I would have real trouble because of the running. I’d probably die. In my mid 40’s I could hold my own with D1 female players at a major Pac 10 school, so I don’t think relative skill would be much of a concern. Sorry you don’t like my opinion but, there it is. That’s an annoying serve. No one practices returning it. However I once had a tennis coach in juniors that would hit serves like that to me in practice as he said you never know if youMll run into someone who does that...I’m starting to think he must’ve annoyed a lot of opponents with that serve too.
Actually, I was only serving that way because the sun angle made it impossible for me to use my usual serve. In hindsight, I should have considered trying on the good visibility side too, as it works especially well in the deuce court against lefties. I also use it on occasion against strong players who are good at crushing high balls, as it stays below the net and draws people off the court.
There's a good chance that the Washington State Open will be held at the Seattle Tennis Club this year in August. Come and play! Every age division with Open, and the Blue Angels fly over your head during your match.
Did green shirt demo the entire prince racket line during this match? I saw a green, black, then blue frame. Orange also switched between a couple frames haha
Wishing I lived in America, to show that this isn’t that hard- call me a keyboard warrior but I’ve faced MEP on steroids- forehand and backhand slice of a pro hitting within 6 inches of the baseline EVERY shot, his knowledge of tennis court dimensions is incredible... may have to ask the bloke to record our match if he’s in my half of the draw on the 30th May
I think they would make a solid team. Played doubles off camera afterwards (Seattle and I vs Atlanta and friend). I can see Atlanta setting up Seattle at the net over and over.

@@TennisTrollChannel Good point. It's very difficult to read his forehand. Opponents always have to be on guard. This can be mentally tiring.
Seeing my opponent come through over and over again with clutch winners on the biggest points to snatch the first set was also very mentally tiring.

MEP's shatter any illusions we might have about our tennis ability. They make us realize we're not nearly as good as we thought we were.

I slice and drive the ball over 100+ mph and these two just plod slowly along that the ball hasn't even got a chance to wear out.

Re his backhand - We practiced the previous afternoon, I did see his drive BH to be very good - he didn't show it in the match for some reason.

Seattle's overhead game is no joke. He was really punishing MEP at the beginning before MEP adjusted
MEP Seattle (in orange) has a pretty decent smash, so he attacked and finished many high balls quite successfully. They deserved to meet and play each other, kudos to both players and the channel)
The guy in green is how a very good right hand player would play if he used his left hand.

Both players played well in the first set. It could have gone either way. I was impressed with Seattle's overhead on short lobs, particularly in this set!
In the second set, Seattle seemed to either get a bit tired or maybe just lost focus somewhat.
I still think that players against MEP do him a favor giving him slower topspin shots which allow him to hit down on shoulder-high driving backspin shots which stay low. That is kind of MEP's bread and butter offensive shot. I would think it would better to keep the ball low against him when possible to force him to hit up...
I would think in a rematch that even if MEP lost the first set, he would be the favorite in a three set match....
We had agreed at the start of the match that if we split sets, we would play out a full third set. The way the first set ended (with MEP's amazing escapes on game points in the last 2 games, after it felt like I was finally finding some momentum), was a mental shock. And MEP was able to play more freely and offensively after that with a set under his belt. With my focus dropped a notch, and his confidence level boosted, the 2nd set went pretty fast.

Nowadays, very rarely. In high school, when my style of play was very different (S&V both first and second serve), I broke strings every 45 minutes until I switched to Problend.
Fun to watch. I like your channel. Thanks. IMHO, the strengths or weapons that these MEPs have in common are tenacity, patience, mobility, economy of motion, endurance, consistency and ball placement. MEP Seattle has a very good overhead. Not sure about MEP Atlanta's overhead. Even though this is all very good stuff, I think that the 4.5s in our (non USTA) league would be able to beat them. I'm in the lowest division, by the way, so none of this applies to me. Even when I was in my late 20s in the early and mid '70s, and maybe about a 4.0 or 4.5 USTA equivalent for those days (and I'm being predictably generous with my assessment of myself), I'm pretty sure that these MEPs would run me to exhaustion. Anyway, the reasons that I think that our 4.5s would beat these USTA 4.5 MEPs is because they share all of the good stuff of these MEPs plus almost all of them are in their 20s and 30s, their mobility and endurance is even better than these MEPs, and their serves and groundstrokes are more forcing weapons. But I could be wrong about that. I've played, and lost to, lots of deceptively efficient and effective players, and these MEPs are definitely efficient and effective. Sometimes quite deceptively so. It's always tough to play MEP type players. Their games are much more diverse and polished than the pushers and/or blockers of lower divisions. Also, it's quite an accomplishment to reach, and win in, USTA 4.5 no matter where it is.
Really wanting a piece of MEP. You can’t really consider yourself a good tennis player until you can be the dreaded “pusher”

SMEP = MEP with an overhead. MEP/Ben - develop that overhead and you will truly be an immovable object of nature.
SMEP simply lost because of more unforced errors. I don’t know how MEP can play that style with his right non dominant arm being so limp/dead.
@@sportscastercanada Yeah, the limp/dead right arm is what gives him the truly unorthodox look that most people can't seem to identify why it looks really 'different'. Val Wilder who played on the pro tour also hits with a limp off-racket arm, same look.

These two are extremely skilled. People who have weak technique and strategies blame pushersfor their losses all the time. They are better than you that is why.
No, they’re not. MEP is highly skilled within a very narrow bandwidth of skill. He’s definitely a difficult player to beat but mostly because he doesn’t play against highly skilled players. A really skilled short order cook is not the same as a skilled chef. That said, I admire his tennis IQ and find his matches enjoyable to watch.

MEP is a 4.5 rated player which means he is better than 90% of tennis players. I think that's highly skilled. It's not pro level, but it's pretty darn good.

@@michaelp9061 I would love and hate that at the same time. As I’m now in my 60’s I would have real trouble because of the running. I’d probably die. In my mid 40’s I could hold my own with D1 female players at a major Pac 10 school, so I don’t think relative skill would be much of a concern. Sorry you don’t like my opinion but, there it is.

That’s an annoying serve. No one practices returning it. However I once had a tennis coach in juniors that would hit serves like that to me in practice as he said you never know if youMll run into someone who does that...I’m starting to think he must’ve annoyed a lot of opponents with that serve too.
Actually, I was only serving that way because the sun angle made it impossible for me to use my usual serve. In hindsight, I should have considered trying on the good visibility side too, as it works especially well in the deuce court against lefties. I also use it on occasion against strong players who are good at crushing high balls, as it stays below the net and draws people off the court.
If you put it at 1.5 speed it looks like a regular pro match.

There's a good chance that the Washington State Open will be held at the Seattle Tennis Club this year in August. Come and play! Every age division with Open, and the Blue Angels fly over your head during your match.
Actually I'll look into it. Do have an itch to play a couple tournaments - time is the issue. Think that tournament has been around for 100+ years.

In my opinion only, I think watching tennis videos at 1.25 speed is closer to how it looks in person upclose.

Wishing I lived in America, to show that this isn’t that hard- call me a keyboard warrior but I’ve faced MEP on steroids- forehand and backhand slice of a pro hitting within 6 inches of the baseline EVERY shot, his knowledge of tennis court dimensions is incredible... may have to ask the bloke to record our match if he’s in my half of the draw on the 30th May
