I talk about safety in Korea often, but I'm continually amazed at how both Koreans and foreigners are able to naturally fall into Korean societal order. How and why is this?! Let me know what you all think!!

I grew up in Gangnam in 80s. It wasn’t always safe. Always got mugged by tugs in the subway stairs and it was so scary to visit Han river park. The city has came a long way. I now live in North America and the major cities in North America is heading the wrong direction.

@@ndychung007 I also grew up in the 8th district in Gangnam from 80s to 90s, but never experienced any of the things you mentioned above.
Most of the high school students would go home around midnight after so called "yaja" then(liberal night classes), and I don't think I ever heard any news that any students in our school was a victim of crimes of any sort.
There, however, was an urban legend that Gosubuji (we used to call Banpo Han River Park, as Gosubuji that time)was criminal. I used to ride a bicycle in Gosubuji on weekends, but nothing scary ever happened to me, or anybody I knew.
Long story short, I think Korea was as safe in the past.

I visited South Korea for the first time in September of 2024 for 10 days. When I returned home to the Seattle area I was immediately embarrassed to be an American for the first time in my life. Hi, Francois!! Great content and thank you for filming at Nam Dae Moon Market. I used to go there many times a long time ago especially when I first arrived in Korea. It sure brings back many fond memories. So, how does Korea keep their country so safe and orderly? One of my answers is Korea's deeply rooted Confucious culture. As you may know, Confucius was a Chinese philosopher who lived more than two thousand years ago and his teachings had a profound impact on many East Asian cultures. Basically, according to him, Confucianism, emphasizes personal and governmental morality, harmonious social relationships, righteousness, kindness, sincerity, and a ruler's responsibility to lead by virtue!! So, based on his teachings, Korean people were taught not to cause any harm to others and always be respectful to one another from very early on. Second, Korean people are very homogeneous people who share the same cultures and same language which makes it easier to govern. Third, Korean people value their image, integrity, honor, and self-worth at the highest level. Hence, they feel ashamed whenever they are caught doing dishonest acts and worry about losing their face and credibility in the eyes of the public. Credibility is very important in Korea, otherwise you will be alienated and mistrusted from the society! Koreans worry about what others think of them so the last thing they want to do is suffer the loss of respect and be humiliated. I am sure there are many other reasons like CCTV, really strict immigration laws, and law enforcement but I really believe the ones that I mentioned played a crucial role in shaping what Korea is today. Of course, Koreans are humans just like any other people in the world so they lie, cheat, and do many fraudulent acts whenever they get the opportunity, especially behind closed doors. There are quite a few rude jerks everywhere especially when driving. However, what I really like about living in Korea is the public safety and the NO availability and ownership of firearms. If Korea was allowed to have guns like the U.S., I do not think it would be a safe country like it is today. This is the biggest reason why I have been living in Korea for almost twenty years. I have recently visited my home country in the U.S., Atlanta, Ga which I still love but you do not know how dangerous I felt knowing people had guns even carrying them.Gun violence and mass shootings are so rampant in the States now, and it's very nerve-racking to just have little disagreements/arguments with other people knowing any minute they could pull out a gun in a fit of anger and shoot you. It happens literally every day in the States. It's so so scary. Americans can not even have civil conversations with their own fellow neighbors and strangers anymore about some delicate issues without having to worry about getting yelled at or even getting killed!! America was not this dangerous when I was growing up in the 70's and 80's. Anyway, I really don't think I can live in America now after living in a safe gun-free Korea for almost twenty years to be really honest with you. Thanks for reading my long message again and always peace brother!!!

    • @jiminswriter4209
      @jiminswriter4209 2 месяца назад +8

Most Koreans respect the civil order. Most countries speak one language than not. Yes, not everyone in Korea acts right, but most do and that is why Korea is very safe.

Wow...I just saw the most accurate description of Korea. You have such great insight. We Koreans often behave the same way, even if our personalities and thoughts are different. Since we value personal morality and responsibility, we tend to have good habits and self-discipline. However, we also get stressed over small things and often judge and criticize others. But it’s definitely not because of CCTV that we don’t steal. No one really pays attention to CCTV. What we care about is the judgment of society. Thank you so much for providing such a clear analysis.

I am so glad that you are enjoying Seoul. I am a Korean and lived there until 1974. I can tell you quite categorically that there were many pickpockets and one had to be constantly vigilant with one’s possessions then. I’m amazed at the drastic transformation of the Korean society when I visit Korea. Perhaps ordinary citizens becoming much more affluent might have something to do with it, but the mystery is that the economy grew so rapidly in Korea while social changes usually tend to be much slower. I have no idea when this happened and why. Maybe a pretty interesting topic for PhD research for a social science student?

I don't think foreigners necessarily know everything about Korean culture, but Korean immigration is very strict, so most are law abiding, at least.

I think it is because the kids in the schools are heavily disciplined by their teachers, not only in academics, but also they are required to clean up their classrooms, hallways, bathrooms, etc. I think that sort of thing carries with them as they grow into adults, and it might also transfer inside and outside of the home too to their kids, friends, society, and so on...

The best way to explain it is (there are cameras everywhere) but besides that if you ever worked in construction and go to a job site (a house or a building under construction) if that job site is always kept clean by the Project Manager or company in charge, then the trades going through there will see that and not make a mess or leave trash, as soon as that site gets messy and material trash is left everywhere, trades will not respect it and just add to the mess, it’s a pretty basic social experiment

Another reason it’s kept clean is that early in the morning there are elders that work part time to pick up the litter..and less garbage cans reduces the trash, make it harder for people to throw their waste and they will make less..the hack is that every subway station has garbage bins so if you are carrying some light trash you can always dip into a subway station to discard it

There WAS a lot of shanty towns around Seoul. And urban developers (mainly of very suspicious background) drived the poor dwellers out of their home and once 'Moon Villages' (달동네)-Korean slang for shanty towns -changed into the well developed high-rise apartment complexes that foreign tourists see in outer area of Seoul. Conspicuous mass protest of the lower class unpriviledged is almost impossible, because all the subpar people got scattered and seeped into the cheap dwellings like goshiwons, underground rents, or rooftops. There's poor people in every nook and cranny in the city. It means They rarely have no option for collective action for their right as citizens compared to the past when they gathered in the same area. And mentioned petty crimes can be learned, trained and reinforeced when the kindred people gathered in the same area in my opinion.

Korea is a very homogeneous society, and Koreans are very conscious of social class. Most Koreans think they are middle class or middle-upper class, and they ALL strive to move up . To move up on the social class ladder, you should work hard, study hard, look good, and behave right. When you want to be in upper-class or upper-middle class, would you act something stupid and low that will make you lose face? Seoul is crowded so if you do anything embarrassing, somebody may find it and EVERYBODY in the country will know it, and you will be too embarrassed to live in the society… it may sound like an overstatement, but I think by instinct Koreans are afraid of getting caught doing stupid things. Korea has no secrets. Any unethical behavior can get caught very easily, and Koreans know it very well. You cannot get away with crimes in Korea. There are consequences almost all the time. Don’t do anything bad, big or small, or the consequences can hunt you for the rest of your life.
Also it means that MOST Koreans have secure social status, and they consider themselves as responsible and respectful citizens. No matter how poor you are, you still have the dignity. People who don’t have anything to lose will not respect law and order. Even poor people feel they belong to the community, and the law and order is to protect and respect themselves. Even the poor people feel they have too much to lose by committing crime. Not many people feel like they don’t belong to the society. Few people feel left out, and few would do any anti-social(violating law and order) behavior.

In fact, there is a big secret that no one can tell. The reason it is not told is because it is an uncomfortable truth. The secret is that East Asians are a superior race. Not only in Korea, but also in East Asian cultures such as Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, and China, it is similar to Korea. The streets are clean and social order is maintained, even in North Korea. It is not that only Korea has exceptionally clean streets and social order. East Asian countries generally have clean streets and excellent social order. This means that East Asians are superior. Morality, character, philosophy, and culture are all superior compared to other cultures. This is the hidden truth. I have not said anything because it could be misunderstood as racism, but after watching this video repeatedly, I wanted to say it someday.

If people learn to respect each other with the dignity which is unique to only humans that are different from animals, they will naturally take dignity and sincerity as basic principles for each other. In this way, order is naturally formed and maintained, and it becomes basic courtesy in society. Westerners need to realize this.

If a foreigner commits a crime in Korea without surveillance or police, they may be surprised to see the police suddenly come and demand their arrest. In Korea, the police monitor almost all roads in real time with surveillance camera systems and track the location and movements of criminals, and arrest them immediately when they receive a report. Koreans are well aware of the very high arrest rate and tend not to even think about committing a crime because they know they will be caught anyway. Pickpocketing is impossible. In crowded places and at stations, plainclothes police carry real-time CCTV footage and arrest pickpockets immediately if they are caught. Korea can be a hell for pickpockets. Garbage is separated and a volume-based fee system is in place. Garbage is separated into paper, metal, vinyl, and plastic. In addition, garbage and food waste must be placed in bags issued and sold by the government. Violators face huge fines, and since you have to pay to throw away garbage in Korea, there are not many trash cans on the streets. So I usually throw away the garbage I have eaten and take the rest home and throw it away separately. In Korea, moral ethics are taught from a young age in school. From elementary school, they teach not to hurt others and not to cause inconvenience to society. Japan is similar. However, China has a completely different culture and way of thinking, so they teach that the world revolves around China and do not know what it means to harm others. This is the difference in thinking between Koreans, Japanese, and Chinese.
