New Honda CR-V review: Better than VW & Skoda?

- This is the new Honda CR-V!
The CR-V has been around for some time now, but here in the UK it doesn’t seem to get the same plaudits as some of its key competitors, such as the Skoda Karoq or VW Tiguan. So the question is, does the new CR-V offer enough to compete with these class leaders?
Well let’s take a closer look, starting with the exterior design. The CR-V certainly looks the part, with sleek headlights and taillights designs, and the usual SUV profile along the side. You’ll also find soft creases across the bodywork, roof bars along the top, and a large grille at the front. If you have a top of the range model like we do here, you’ll also find a sporty front bumper.
The interior is well laid out, and we’re glad to find a couple of physical buttons and dials for the climate controls. However, reach a bit lower down and you’ll find scratchy plastics along the central console and on the door bins. There’s also a large infotainment screen on top of the dash, and while the system isn’t the best, it’s certainly much better than the old Honda infotainment system!
There are two engines to choose from. Both are 2-litre 4 cylinder petrol engines, and both are hybrids. The plug-in hybrid comes with the a single electric motor to drive the front wheels, like the self-charging hybrid has two motors and offers four wheel drive. Despite this, both cars have the same 148hp power output.
So does the new CR-V have what it takes to compete with the best? And is it worth the £46,000 starting price? You’ll need to stick with Mat and see for yourself!

Races are good but there is a lot of random modified cars that you can't really buy like m4s with 1200bhp etc. Possibly too many? I'd like more cheaper cars raced like 1.0 superminis and diesel SUVs as well as the fab supercars and more head to heads too

2 things I would like to point out: 1. The blind spot monitoring camera can be turned off from a button on the indicator stalk, personal experience suggests it is easy and never confused me while driving through a round-about. 2. The reverse gear selector (in my opinion) is actually quite intuitive, I immediately got used to the button for forward and pull back for reverse.

Holy cow. The new CRV’s here in Australia starts from $45,000 to the top of the range at $60,000. Converting the currency it is £23,000 to £31,000.

Here it the states it's starts at 30 grand but even the more expensive CRV is 35 grand before options.

Not really. I had all CRV models since 2011 to 2021. Currently I drive new 2023 Glc300d that cost 66k and honestly it is not 9k better than crv. Only better thing is engine that's it. Interior quality is close.

I’ve always liked Hondas, owned a few and worked for them for a few years. But the pricing is mental, £54k for this, £50k for the Type R (I remember when it was £17k), even the Jazz is so expensive now. I understand inflation and everything has become so much more expensive, but I feel like they are pricing themselves out of the market, as for those prices people can afford a car with a higher status brand (my last two Audi’s have been cheaper than those prices).
Not the USA market which all they appear to be caring about these days - lots of Crv about when built in Swindon…. Doubt you will see much of the new ones in uk ....cost here is

@@neavius I was in Boston earlier in the year and I couldn’t believe how many CRVs where on the road actually. I was expecting a lot of American cars, but it was mostly Hondas and Toyotas.
@@Cloggie1967 first Audi I had no issues with at all, loved it, my current Audi has been a bane of my life with issues. I had three civics including a type R, and never had any issues at all. All my family still drive Hondas. Honda’s will always be my first love when it comes to cars, but in regards to the current generation of car buyers, it’s highly unlikely they will buy a Honda over something which has a higher status name, even if a Honda would cost loss and give them less problems. Hondas don’t look as good on instagram 🤣

Thought you'd find this interesting: the North American CRV, HRV (the ZRV is called the HRV in North America; it's the same car), and Civic all have traditional shifters, even in their hybrid configurations. The bizarre button based shifter layout seems to be a UK specific design.
These "ordinary" car reviews probably don't do that well in terms of views, but glad to see they're still being done on this channel

I know the price of these seem pretty crazy but according to Car Sales the top of the line CRV Sport in 2004 cost about $38,490, here in Australia. Adjusting for inflation that's around $60,000 nowadays so the price has stayed relatively consistent. Nevertheless, fk inflation.
£54k is $103k though, so I'm not surprised people are blown away by the price in the UK. They're not far off half the price in Australia.
That rant about the gear selector is very true. While I don't have the button style selector, I do have a p button right next to the start stop button. And from time to time, I would still press the start stop button before I had put the car into park and engaged the parking brake.

I'd understand the pricing a bit more if Honda wanted to try to become more of an "upmarket" brand, but they skimp out on loads of things which are fairly standard in Economy cars, (I.e using Halogens STILL regardless of trim, limited drivetrain options, poor-average sound insulation, average sound system integration, average material choice, etc.) There are many things that they can do to better justify the price a bit more. For £45K-54K it is a massive ask.
I have a top spec 2008 CRV, had it for 12 years. Still going strong.
I love the the fact that matt has reviewed a bugatti chiron super sport and also a cr v for us common people😂

Ooh so great question! The little things in the back on the wheel well go on the pocket (The side pockets on both sides of the boot on the inside of the car) so that when you raise the like tray thing were you put like grocerys you know you can lower it and raise it well when you raise it the side pockets have space for items to slip into like were the charger/spare wheel would go so those go there to stop that you get them and you clip them on using the clips. And thats weird in the US The starting price is like 20k and ending price is like 38k
The lane watch camera from Honda is very effective and we don’t need it for the lane on the driver’s side as the side mirror on that side has a lesser blind spot, if any.
The lane watch gives a real time, ‘all or none’ information and not like blind spot monitoring on other cars which can malfunction and give false negative information
Honda should not price themselves out of the market with only "adequate" product.

Reminds me of the Accord of which I owned two. Around 2009 they decided to go after the BMW market rather than the Passat but in effect all they did was increase the price. If anything the quality decreased. Put me off and many others. Accord used to sell in decent numbers but the result was driving all their loyal customers away and not attracting new custom. Their Accord experiment failed in the European market. Looks like history is about to repeat itself with the CR-V.
The whole lineup has already moved up on price, essentially besides the vehicles that haven't received a refresh yet.
Looks great, a massive improvement on the awkward previous design. However, as other uave said... £45k starting price! Absolutely insane. I predict £8-10k discount available within 12 months.

Bought a CRV hybrid Sport Touring in the US last week. It was $3k over msrp and has 19” wheels and a shifter; no button shifting which I prefer. Love the car. A little pricey though

I bought a 2023 Kia Sportage Hybrid SX Prestige with all the bells and whistles and I paid $39895 cash with taxes and registration including options $450 gravity gray paint, $175 carpeted floor mats, $125 cargo tray, $150 cargo cover, $350 homelink auto dimming mirror and $125 Mudguards. And I got $400 off. Granted I ordered the car in November 2022 and it arrived April this year.

Unlike other cars the crv will operate still good after 15 years and you cannot say the same about different car brands without changing the engine and other weird parts.
@moto_v Agreed. Had an 06 CRV MK 2 for 14 yrs (bought used at 3 yrs old) scrapped in sept 2023 (so 17 yrs old) - 243,000 miles. In that time needed alternator, 2 front brake callipers & clutch. Brilliant car never let me down.

No mate, not with the CVT transmission and timing belt. Honda are cheaping out on that aspect and I would buy Toyota with real auto tran and timing chain.
@@ivofixzone6410the hybrid cars do not have a cvt gearbox anymore. Its just the electric Motor driving and between 80-120 km/h its 1 mechanical Gear or 2 for the crv that are moving the car.
I had a 2019 Civic with the blind spot camera, I got used to it and actually miss having that feature. It was handy and you could also turn it on/off manually if you wanted too. The reason it doesn't turn on for the right is because you don't need it for your right, you can just turn your head ever so slightly and use your peripheral vision to detect anything in your drivers side blind spot. Honda drivers tend to be older too, so it's harder for them to turn their neck to check the passenger side blind spot. I think Honda understands their customer base, and it is much easier to glance down at the screen than to turn ones head over their left shoulder.
The 2019 Civic and 2023 Civic also have own blind spots.

If you hit the button on the indicator stick, it will stop displaying the blind spot, keep indicating, and bring up your map that you had on before indicating.

I dont like ugly cars but i cant help but think ugly cars had personality, kinda like how old extravagant architecture wasn't for everyone but they all had characer compared to the new modern minimalist design everything has today, u get what I'm saying?

Honda knows their cars don't break, which means they don't sell as many. You're paying for reliability. With other brands the maintenance and trade in and replacement costs quickly catches up with you. But you buy a Honda once, and if you don't mind driving the same car for 20+ years, it will be the last car you own until your kids inherit it when they go to uni
Well said @fireman, these cars are very reliable, comfortable, and a joy to drive. I'm on my 3rd Honda and none of my previous cars gave me any trouble, I just change them after a while.
Just don’t buy a 1 litre 3 cylinder because they are terrible. That shape civic was a bad car but with that engine it’s one of the worst cars they made.
I’m still driving my 2010 Honda Odyssey…kids have grown up and moved out but this car won’t die 😂

The plastic bits in the boot are for blocking off the gap by the boot floor to stop anything going underneath. They hook onto loops on each side at the rear. I don't know why they aren't in position permanently though.

That price increase is quite substantial on the outgoing model, here in Australia these things really hold their resale value. Last info i saw on suv resale 4 of the top 10 vehicles that hold their resale value here were crv models. Convincingly beating its main competitors in the rav4 and cx5.
However sales have crashed since honda Australia changed to agency model, down over 60%

Whole new CRV reminds us with a lot of competitors design.... swedish rear tail lights have been highly influence on previous Honda Jazz/Fit too. Weirdly Honda didn't made that happen on Accord rear lights thou.
CRV has been selling hit in Estonia last 3-4 generations(I do not know exactly as I am not fan of it). But always when there is a new generation out, it is at top of new cars selling list.

The new CR-V really looks nice in terms of interior and exterior design.The previous generation Honda CR-V really didn't sit well with Mr Watson so I'm quite surprised with how much he likes this new one😂. It's a nice family car that can tackle every day life with ease and comfort. Nice review as always Mat🔥

American CR-Vs don't use that push button shifter, they have a standard PRND lever. Interesting. Nice review as always!

Here In South Korea, the hybrid version of this car is around £33k inc. VAT and it looks reasonable

which is £33,000 when converted. Who is paying such a high price for a Honda? Seriously that is Mercedes Benz money here in Aus. Anything over £40,000 is ridiculously expensive.
New Mercedes GLB200 is under 80k aud. You can probably get the GLB35 AMG for the top of the line CRV.

Toyota sells almost 4 times fewer cars than VW, behind VW, Stellantis, Renault and Hyundai, about as much as BMW. VW has 3 brands in the same segment as Toyota brand. Stellantis has 8 brands (Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Lancia, Jeep, Peugeot, Citroen, DS, Opel) .
Toyota as a brand appears so high because Toyota as a company doesn't have many brands. The same way as the Model Y is the top selling EV model, while VW ID.4 combined with Skoda Enyaq and Audi Q4 e-tron actually have higher sales figures.

When you tested the civic hybrid you liked the artificial engine noise. I think you change like the weather. You also seem to have a downer on Honda for some reason.
Comparing to a Kia Sportage is unfair, the new CRV is both longer & wider. Having driven both there is far more passenger space in the CRV. I was a little shocked at the new price, people comparing it to the equivalent RAV4. But the RAV4 is a 5 year old design, I do like the RAV4 but that needs a new updates model.
The rav 4 prime is cheaper. Has a better interior and has 300hp 5.5secon 0-100.. And in my opinion looks better. This is mental

The sound of the brake pedal is due to electric servo motor under the hood. There's effectively no mechanical connection between the brake pedal and the brakes, hence why they were able to nail the whole blended braking system. Also, this means there's no ABS pulsations or freakout when under hard braking.

The finger protection window on the Tiguan might be more sensitive, but that leads to the windows going full open if you want to close them from a small opening at higher speeds due to buffeting... which is massively annoying
So that has never happened to me! I think that's complete nonsense and I often drive on German Autobahn at high speeds.
The blind spot camera shows up only while you turn left probably because while indicating right the drivers focus should be to his right and not on the centre console...probably..
What they need for that indication camera is either make it smaller or a dedicated smaller screen. Or the Tesla route which is a big enough screen that fits both map and camera
The HEV RS is $59,0000 AUD drive away. That's about half the British price. Why?

I’ve had 5 CRV’s and there was a time they absolutely where the best family SUV on the planet - but for a few years now they have lost ground on multiple other marques. The new pricing is ridiculous ! And as you say, when you walk around it, it looks like a miss mash of other cars. Inside Honda have been lacking in tech for a while - the infotainment system is poor for the price range - def won’t be buying another CRV I’m afraid
Hello! I cannot find reviews of cars where the light system is chequed. I think it is important, would be nice to have those reviewed too.
The styling is generally nice, but once you realise how ridiculously long the front overhang is, you cannot unsee it.
Honda always nailed on ergonomics and steering response. But more and more cheap hard plastics are being fitted in their recent models while the pricetags are getting higher. Mmm...

We have the Honda ens1 & enp1 the use the same chassis as this one and there are lot of stuff like the sound when it started and the gear nice cars and the front lights the screen on the ens1 & enp1 is huge way bigger and the rear seat belt .
They have gone totally mad with prices:in 2019 i bought a brand new crv, 1,5 liter turbo, AWD, for a discounted price of 32,5k euros. That was the right value for money

Is this a cvt? Im pretty sure that shift is the 2 speed direct drive that the new crv’s get. It’s quite complicated, the engine AND motor can direct drive the car in 2 speeds, but most of the time the engine is just a generator and the motor direct drives the wheels like a full EV. It’s wildly confusing but I don’t think it’s a true cvt.

I dont like ugly cars but i can't help but think ugly cars had personality, kinda like how old extravagant architecture wasn't for everyone but they all had characer compared to the new modern minimalist design everything has today, u get what I'm saying? What do you guys think?

That's what I always thought. So many automakers would make weird cars and so many called it ugly. It makes sense in a world moving to evs and tighter and tighter profits that they throw in the towel with that mindset and try to make the most sleek objectively attractive unoffensive car they can to attract the most
@@baronvonjo1929 yh and in an effort to attract the most people they all do the same low effort thing which just feels like it sucks the "special" out of the car, it's the same feeling I got when I saw those red phone booths we've come to associate with britain being replaced with grey metal boxes that look like glorified jail cells, I understand its modern, but it has 0 character, it feels cold and pointless really

The AWD version doesn't have an electric motor on the rear axle. It actually has a classic AWD system with a drive shaft and a differential.

The plastic bits in the boot are actually tiny seperators to make the pockets in front of the wheel arches deeper. My 2019 CRV has them, too.
The camera assistent for the blind spot on only the left hand side makes actually sense. It helps you to monitor the left side without requiring to turn your head to look into the mirror. This way you always keep an eye on the front side. You don't really need that for the right side, as you can just check the mirror with a quick glance. Saves them money while being still convenient I guess.
The new Hyundai Kona has blind spot monitoring for off side and near side and the views are displayed on two separate screens from the entertainment. Mirrors don't show a blind spot. Hence the monicker.

plus he can switch back to his sat-nav if he need it with a button on the indicators stalk
That blind spot camera only working for changing left is probably for left-hand traffic, under the assumption that you can see your right-hand blind spot if you look over your shoulder. But they don’t switch it around for right-hand drive markets. 🤣

It's worth talking about (and including on future videos) why would anyone buy a Honda in the first place. They aren't simply charging 10k more because they have to (i.e. higher costs) than Korean analogues. Hondas are generally made to last and the total ownership cost may be a lot closer (including fuel, etc.). Hondas generally rate highly on reliability as well...
According to What Car reliability table for 2023, Honda sit in sixth place while Hyundai and Kia sit in seventh and eighth respectively. The Koreans are many thousands of pounds cheaper and are usually better vehicles.
why is their resale value so poor and why dont we see many 15 year old korean cars around? time is the greatest test of all... and repairs... hard to beat toyota/honda for both the build quality in general/quality controls AND the fact honda has been making internal combustion engines longer than ANYONE else@@WestonMike
