@@eugeniolejarza9702 they have to share close blood. Siblings, cousins, a brother or mother, sister or father. When you breed incest, recessive genes appear that cause horrible mutations (any defects that are affected by the same blood will definitely be passed down to the new pups). Breeding the same dog breed but no where near related should be fine, but mongrels are the healthiest dogs. Pedigrees are badly bred anyway. So it probably doesn't matter even if you do breed outside of blood.
      Adopt don't shop kids. 🙆
The only way we can get rid of these kind of breeders is by not giving them money.

Yeah, dog shows suck. I was introduced to them by my late dog's breeders, who were kind of elitists and very much the "dog show"-type people. I hated it, my dog hated it and we only went a few times. The surroundings there are really stressful and breeders can be really mean to each other. I didn't witness anything other than gossiping, but that was enough for me. Thankfully, my next dog will be a resque, so I won't be able to attend even if I wanted to. We might attend a match show just for fun, but those tend to be much more relaxed anyway. They're all for fun or charity. I'm hoping to find a hobby my future dog will like, and maybe we'll be good enough to compete as well.

For a millennia old dog such as the pug, it's fitting that as society gets more decadent, so do they have to ruin dog breeding too. As you can tell from my picture, I love pugs a lot, they are emotionally intelligent dogs and very good natured. It's the breed standards people choosing dysgenic traits as well as puppy mills pumping out puppies with very poor health that is ruining this breed. They wouldn't have survived this long if they were always this way. I say yes, do breed more retro pugs and select for long snouts, long legs and healthy traits.

But sometimes the breedstandards are healthy too (mostly for functioning working dogs though) and are needed to ensure that herding or hunting dogs don't loose their instincts and aren't bred in a way that their apperance starts to interfere with their working abilities.
The goal of all breedstandards should be to keep or restore breeds to the point that they are healthy, but sadly that isn't a truth for all breeds yet.

Her former owners didn’t want her because she was born with awful conditions due to pedigree breeding. My family pays high medical bills to try and give her a semi comfortable life but she experiences nothing like what a healthy mutt would get. No pugs should not exist. a few years ago our old pug Dexter passed away. We could always hear where he was due to his breathing. He also was mostly blind and deaf, and the only way he could move around the house was because he lived there for so long (about 10 years in that house, he was 14). Whenever we moved furniture around he would walk straight into it, it was depressing. During his last year or so, he didn't even respond to his name because he couldn't hear anything. On the day we put him to sleep, His eyes were falling out of his head. It was awful, and I'm glad my mom took him out of the house before my younger brother could see. Overall, I would never support the breeding of pugs or any other breeds with terrible genetic deformities like pugs.

There's a random chance of getting a recessive genetic defect when you breed something now when you breed a completly unrelated animal to this animal nothing will happen because the other animal doesn't have the recessive trait but when you breed relatives to each other the more inbreeding the more likely these traits will pop up because the other animal have this trait. It's fine in leopard geckos most of the time because thier Gene's are well documented and so are thier lineages now in dogs they have been so much this way they are basically fucked... so maybe the problem is inbreeding! That pugs are unhealthy and suffering is not exaggerated nor is it an assumption. It is a cold hard cruel fact. Or did you not bother to pay any attention to this video? Though he did not go into detail about the breathing issues, there are physical reasons for them. When was the last time you tried doing your normal daily activities while breathing through a pillow? Because that is an apt comparison for what being a pug is like. Retro pugs are fine. They have enough of a snout to alleviate their breathing issues and longer legs with sounder bone structure. It also depends on the breeder, if you get a dog from a shelter it’s probably not going to have the best genetics. Adopt or Shop Responsibly.

Basically pug breeders out-crossed pugs to the Parson Russel Terrier then back bred the offspring into pugs and only selected the offspring from the back breeding with the longest snouts to continue breeding. A stubby snout, smaller eyes, finer body and less wrinkles is the result. The stubby snout is enough to take care of the breathing issues of the pug breed and due to the outcrossing, they have better genetic diversity than the pure and very much unhealthy pug.

I grew up with a family who bred Schapendoes dogs specifically for sheep herding and rescue dog usage. We did it because they are a healthy, loving, family-friendly breed with a very high intellect and potential for working while still being family pets. That means I got to witness some of the breed's decline in the first row. Our dogs were all at least 50 cms tall, had a normal 10cm fur length and normal dog proportions. When going to dog shows over the years, because success in those is required for breeding, I noticed 'rivals' getting the pug treatment. Shorter snouts & legs, fur to the ground kept long, weakened jaws & horrid overbites everywhere as well as a height loss to 30 to 35cms. Our dogs usually won due to being the old breed ideal still based on functionality, but the other dogs came in increasingly from private households who bought them as lapdogs. The designer dog and teacup dog treatment spares none it seems.
I believe some working breeds should be preserved cleanly for functionality and to avoid some of the impulse issues I mention later. But overall all breeding for cuteness has to be stopped, I totally agree. It's inhumane.
So overall mixing is the more humane thing to do.
    Just keep in mind:
You have to be careful with breaking up the breeds. Dogs should be mixed first with others in their weight class and character type, otherwise, the puppies may face other biological issues ie. short legs of a Dachshund and an Australian Shepherd's activity requirements. This would leave the dog unable to fulfill its basic needs. Or Pulli hair genes in a pug, the poor thing couldn't breathe because of the body structure of a pug and is saddled with the long hair plates of pullis. The plates would also grow inside the skinfolds and sag all of it, permanently weighing it down unless shorn.
    The bigger issue are:
    1. Impulses: with purebreds or dogs where you can vaguely trace the heritage, you have a predictability factor. For example A lot of hunting dogs aport babies or small children due to their urges if not supervised at all times. That means if you had a mix you would never know if your dog has a high chance of dragging your child to you in the kitchen by their ears or nose, permanently maiming them. Or if your dog, who behaves like a friendly herding dog usually, suddenly bites on impulse and can't let go due to fighting dog genes.
What I'm saying is that cautious mixing has to be done or undesirable traits will become more unpredictable and commonly spread resulting in more trouble with dogs, especially in families as they may pose danger for small children.
    2. Genetic Character Traits: When mixing breeds with opposite character traits one may get bipolar puppies. In a famous experiment, wolves were bred directly with poodles. The resulting puppies were visually all fine but some behaved like poodles, very attached & human-friendly and some like wolves, shy and reserved towards humans. The problematic ones were the bipolar dogs. They were drawn to humans and needed their affection but couldn't deal with it correctly. They bit uncontrollably and practically wasted away from loneliness when being kept outside with the wolf ones.
Breeding Chihuahuas, who were originally intended to be aggressive ratcatchers killing rats as big as them, with Bichon Frise is a bad idea as an example. They may be conflicted in themselves and be disturbed for that reason, which is shitty for dog and owner.
Exaggerated potentially troublesome traits need to be de-escalated by consciously diluting them or removing them from the general pool completely.

The ridgeback situation, in the kennel club guidelines it says " ridge-less puppies should be culled" (culled is selective killing)
Funny that because ridge-less puppies have less of a chance of developing genetic diseases, but no, they are culled because of a stupid desired trait.

The kennel club (at least the UK one, which was featured in that documentary about crufts) no longer supports culling healthy pups - their guidelines now suggest that a breeder should offer them to 'pet homes' (ie: non-show dog owners) and ensure that their contract of sale includes a spay/neuter clause. From their code of ethics: "Breeders:...Will agree that no healthy puppy will
be culled. Puppies which may not conform to the Breed Standard should be placed in suitable homes." The documentary shown is a few years old now, most of the 'oldschool' breeders like the old bag who thought nothing of killing pups without a ridge are thankfully out of the game by now.

But when she was 6 months old she would scream out in pain for what seemed like no apparent reason she would cry and drag her back legs, at times she would roll around in pain. We thought she was sick and took her to the vet ASAP! They looked her over, tested her, x-ray, however they told us she was suffering from hip dysplasia. A common problem with GSDs. They told us the only thing we could do for her was give her small amounts of baby ibuprofen to ease the pain especially in winter when she could hardly walk. It was hard to watch her suffer, unfortunately, she passed away from a rattlesnake bite a few months after her first birthday... Though she was a great dog and because of her I love the breed, it's a shame that many like her are victims of careless breeders. They only breed these dogs for the sake of money and don't give shit about the dogs well being and health. Getting a GSD without hip dysplasia is very easy. You just need to find a reputable breeder that testes the parents for hip issues, rather than going for the cheapest dog on craigslist. I have a rescue pure bred Staffordshire terrier (pit bull) whose parents are award winning show dogs. All the puppies came out blue except one, he was tan and the owners were going to put him down because he wasn't the "right" color and they didn't think he would sell. I begged them to let me have him instead so they gave him to me. Later they found out that several people had made offers of $500 to $1000 to buy him off me (he wasn't for sale, I turned them down) so the original owners sent me a bill for $400, half the price they charge for "correct" colored puppies. I tore it up and sent it back to them, they can fuck right off. They were going to kill that dog and gave him to me for free when they thought he was worthless.
Anyway, he has a shortened snout, not anywhere as dramatic as a pug but even he has trouble breathing. His head is so massive & heavy that he gets tired of holding it up and will rest his chin on stuff whenever possible to take some of the strain off his neck.

I moved to a house with a bigger yard just to give him more room to run but due to his breathing issues he can only run for so long before he starts coughing up phlegm and wheezing.
He was specifically bred to have that head shape and size because it looks intimidating as all get out but he's had to suffer for it. Pits are status symbol dogs where I live so lots of people breed them to sell and they think the scarier looking they are the better. Not only are they bred to have ridiculously big heads with shorter snouts and extremely muscular chests & legs but many owners also dock their tails and have their ears cropped. It's crazy all the genetic manipulation and unnecessary surgeries they will put these dogs thru just so they look a certain way, they've basically become a living fashion accessory. I’m a former pug owner and I do agree with all the valid points this video made. My little pug Koji, (RIP) died two months ago at the young age of 2 yrs old. During those two years it was countless visits to the vet, resulting in lots of medication and the hefty amount that came with it. At just 2 months he already had an eye infection. Throughout the 2 years he had a total of 3 eye infections, an unexplainable bacterial infection between his folds, but worst of all he sneezed blood. After he turned 1, he was due for his annual vaccines and suddenly when we got home, he suffered an allergic reaction. It’s already hard enough for pugs to breath but having something blocking his airway was pure torture. They treated him and said nothing was wrong, but after two days he started sneezing blood. His sneezing was very frequent at night and no vets were open during that time so, I had no choice but to take him to the emergency pet hospital, in which they charged more. After countless vet surgeries Koji stopped sneezing. A few months later, like any regular night I kissed him goodnight and put his beds in my sister’s room. He liked sleeping there anyways, but just in case I always left a spare bed in the living and my room, so he can choose whichever he can be comfortable in. Unfortunately, I woke up to my sister screaming that he wasn’t moving we rushed to the same ER and sadly, he did not make it. It was so sudden that they declared it was a heart attack. I knew within my heart that he wasn’t a healthy pug, no pug is healthy. Even if he didn’t have all these health problems you still have to be careful with them. You need to clean their face folds daily, watch their diet since they’re prone to obesity, they can’t breathe properly even when they sleep or during a regular walk. I love pugs in general, but if you plan on getting one be ready for a plethora of vet bills and concerns that you don’t usually have if you have a regular ‘healthy’ dog. Brachycephalic dogs in general are not healthy, just a warning.

    • @skyeiron5872
      @skyeiron5872 5 лет назад +4

@@user-kn2qk8ly8c Hypothyroidism and obesity is common in neutered dogs because they don't have their hormones to keep it in check anymore. You just have to keep a very close eye on their weight and they may need to be medicated in more severe cases to prevent obesity. Only thing I can recommend other than a vet visit is to watch his food intake and give him plenty of exercise. If you have a bike and live in an appropriate place I would suggest that you train him to run beside it and build up to running him for 3+ km per day. Just make sure he runs on grass and be careful of sign posts and cones lest you go one way and he goes the other and run him with the leash attached to a harness, not his collar in case of sudden stops or yanking. If he enjoys pulling while biking you may consider bike-joring though I'm not sure if that would work with a dog his size. Roller blading is another option if you have smooth pavement and are confidant enough to control him and your own speed.

Persians and exotics come to mind for some of the same reasons pugs do; their flat faces cross a line into uncanny valley and I become concerned about their eyes and how clean they stay. Munchkins are adorable, but there's still the issue of their backs and poor breeding with them. Scottish folds may the ones I feel worse for; the cute little droopy ears usually come with chronic joint pain.

There's a similar thing happening with Arabian horses, where breeders try so hard to get the 'pretty' dished face, that they neglect to realise that the poor horse can't breathe properly. Horses breathe predominantly through their nose, and the dished face does a similar thing to the squashed nose on a pug. They just can't get the same volume of air in that other horse breeds can. It's horrendous, and pisses me off to no end.
To actually be on the topic of dogs, I've never really been a fan of pugs. I prefer large dogs with proper snouts, such as German shepherds and border collies. I also love greyhounds, but the racing of them just makes me sad. (My family owns a little Italian Greyhound, she's gorgeous).
So many animals would be much better off if we just let them be, honestly.

I would like to point out that many King Charles Cavalier breeders are actively working to breed out the issues that were bred into them fairly recently. The same goes for Pekingese. The issue is that not all dogs come from caring breeders that make an effort to breed them in a way that keeps them healthy. The best thing a person can do is instead of getting a different breed of dog, search for a good breeder and make sure to neuter/spay your dog in order to help these breeds become healthier.

Dachshunds actually have a purpose for their shape, though its highly exaggerated in the pure bred society. They are torpedo shaped to help chase after badgers underground. Their small yet powerful legs and slender, long body help them through the tight tunnels. Their name is German for "badger dog" because of this reason. They are of course more commonly used as lap dogs nowadays. I have a dachshund myself and I've had him since i was extremely young. When i see people with extremely long backed dachshunds making them do tricks where the dog stands on their hind legs, i scream internally. With such long backs, doing stuff like this will harm their backs. They also shouldnt jump from high places like beds and couches for the same reason. Dachshunds are relatively healthy dogs when not bred to be 8 kilometers long. Also, what the new standard for German Shepherds are now is awful. They want their hind legs to practically be in a forever squatting position. This is supposed to "help them when springing forward in an attack" when it does as much good as having the longest back for a dachshund. The kennel clubs are so idiotic to me. You take dogs that have a practical purpose and drive them to shit. It makes me really sad to see stuff like that

It's a shame to see working breeds ruined for fashion.
I had an English pointer who didn't have the jowls of most English pointers and remember my late dad saying to me "if I was to train him, he'd make a good work dog!" My dad was a game keeper and worked with gun dogs before. Morgan, the dog I'm question, was gun shy however so he was never trained to work in the field.
He still pointed though! Died at 16 years he did. Can't see show pointers making that milestone myself.

The problem is exactly the exaggeration of today's dachshunds traits, which leads to more health issues because the desired trait is seen as more important than a dog's health and happiness.

Theres a standard of sorts that basically says "The further your dog looks from a wolf,, the more unhealthy and deformed it likely is." As is evident from the dogs you used as examples for the sick breeding practices of people. I think we should write that standard into an animals rights law somehow.

E A this is why i’m not a fan of most small dogs, because they don’t look like dogs to me. most of them are ugly too and have so many health problems that they’re permanently gross (eyes dripping, snotty nose, etc) and it makes me feel bad but i feel repulsed being around them

I mean, that's what evolution is though. Also, dogs aren't wolves, they're a distinct subspecies and some taxonomists think they should be considered a completely different species (and really, that would depend on how one defines species). Dogs are not wolves, they have distinct behaviours that they do not share with wolves. An example of this is that dog trainers/behaviouralist have all but abandoned applying what we know about wolf social structure to dogs. An example of this is that dogs, both tame and feral, do not form the highly structured social hierarchies that their wild counterparts do.

The show GSD line has strayed far from their original look and purpose, it's true. However, there are still people out there keeping the old working lines of shepherds going- I have one and he's great. And, credit to my local GSD Kennel Club, at least in Australia there are currently moves within the show community to improve the breed and try to eradicate or reduce heritable diseases such as hip dysplasia.

I love pugs and I own 2 of them but they were both adopted. My first was 5 years old and was found abandoned at a pound and the second was 6 and given up by a family who couldn't take care of him anymore. Both have had serious and expensive health problem. I love then both so much and love pugs but I would never buy a pug puppy becasue I don't support their breeding. Always adopt!

About 30 minutes north of where I live there was a french bulldog puppy mill busted and the dogs had so many health issues that they could not be adopted from the SPCA. An organization we had a day at my job for found good homes and only let people who were financially stable enough to care for the dogs health issues could adopt and they were all adopted within a week. I feel so bad for the little guys even though I’ve always had a place in my heart for dogs with smushed faces :(
