There have been a lot of false teachings about tithing, however, we can’t abandon giving altogether simply because certain people have misused it. We need to learn the Biblical truth about giving. So, what does the Bible really say about tithing?

We don't live in the old testament law, If we accept one law then as Paul said we are obliged to keep all the law.
What does the new testament say about tithing? Jesus saying about tithing to Pharisees isn't really a teaching of tithing to His followers but rather a rebuke for their hypocrisy.

This is great .... I stopped tithing exactly 10% years ago and my wife and I started giving consistently and as much as we can which more times than not, we found, end up being more than 10%. We want to give because we love and appreciate everything, He has done for us. We now give with an absolutely thankful heart, period ... We did not want our recognition of what He has done for us (thankfulness) to be limited to or to be an exact number of 10% ... We almost felt like sticking to 10% exactly was like giving God a tip and it began to fill heartless or it was like paying a bill, almost mindless. We give as much as we can even when it sometimes feels uncomfortable which we believe is what the bible means to give sacrificially. We now give because He is the Lord of our Lives, and we want to give back to Him what really is His anyway. Thank you Jesus for your grace and mercy.

I can understand your beliefs, today's ministry wants to "give"you a receipt to those who give. They do this just so you can deduct your offering and tithe from your income tax. Personally I feel that this policy takes away from being a cheerful giver.

I encourage anyone who’s heart leads them to give less than 10% to take some time and read Jesus’ teaching, especially the Sermon on the Mount, and ask whether the letter of the law or the call to follow Jesus creates a higher bar. Where your treasure is, there your heart will be. Anyone saying the tithe is a law for Christians in the New Covenant is way off, and anyone saying what you give doesn’t matter is way off too. The New Covenant didn’t lower any standards, but it does free us from obligation for a right relationship with God.

I attended and was very involved in a church that taught the 10% + tithing rule. They didn’t enforce it outright, but they had a Christian school that you couldn’t send your children to unless you tithed along with the tuition. They said if you neglected to tithe from the gross of your pay you were robbing God. We were in poverty and after paying the tithe each pay we were often left with nothing to pay for our food, so we went to family to get food and started a tab at the corner store where they gave a a $50 limit. They were tough times. We had to scrape and go without while the church leaders had plenty and took summer vacations to the beach each year, etc. I struggled with giving with a cheerful heart, but I also gave my time and skills teaching Sunday school, along with many other helping ministries. Poverty caused trauma in my life since I had children and other challenging situations in my marriage to deal with too. I left that church long ago, but the scars remain. I’m here at your channel to continue on my journey of unlearning the false teachings. I trust no one. I rely on scripture to prove what is true, but the church I was at said the same. I learned this same thing that you’re teaching about tithes many years ago and people looked at me like I was somehow greedy, selfish or ignorant. I am a giver more than ever, but it’s not cash as much as my time, prayers, and love that I give. Giving takes many forms. I am cheerful about it now.

God forbid that I'm being boastful in any way just being truthful, but even with my struggling income, I have fed the homeless, given clothes to those in need, given rides to random women, given my shoes away, bought some shoes, clothes, birthday cakes, gifts to those less fortunate, given money to others, etc. I wish the churches today operated like the early church, where all were the same financially, but the reality is many rich pastors have many poor members who are often neglected. Well said. Thank you for sharing this. It's interesting how many times I have heard a teacher or preacher say that, if you do not tithe, you are stealing from God. (Malachi 3:8-12) But in the next breath, they will say that we must give cheerfully and not under compulsion. It's a contradiction. If I believe that not tithing is stealing from God, then I WILL give under compulsion to keep from being cursed.
We are to give as we have received and as we purpose in our hearts. There is no % under the New Covenant; we are free to give. There is blessing in being a free and cheerful giver.

@Andrew Davison, I believe you would be correct. So, say the animal has a value of $100 and that is your tithe (10%), if you wanted to keep the animal and give money, you would give $120 as it would be valued at 12% of whatever you were tithing on. If $100 is 10%, then the value of the 100% is $1,000...$1,000 x 12% is $120.

How I wish I understood this concept better. My husband worked extra hours just to be able to get us thru. I sold water bottles in the streets. I gave in every way possible. We were raising our 4 kids and then my deceased sisters kids. That was a total of ten people. Only one employed as I was very I’ll most of the time with cancer and other illnesses. Each time I gave I felt it wasn’t good enough. The scripture being used to justify was the couple who died bc they didn’t give of their profits. I never really understood well that story the way it was being taught to me. I felt like god would be mad at me bc sometimes I gave less than. While I was sick I did crafts and sold those. I babysat neighbors children even tho I had 8 to care for I only charged $40 or $50 bc I was feeling afraid to ask for more. I spent more hours with this kids than their parents. My husband worked two shifts back to back so we could get a bit more. He later suffered a triple bypass. I have a broken back now and many other issues. We were constantly working in some way to be sure to take care of our kids basic needs and have money to give the church. I also cooked weekly food in the church to sell and all the proceeds went to youth ministry. Later, I was told that all the money I raised for that ministry would be used to meet other needs. Also, told that I can not designate how that money was going to be used. While I was producing it was being accepted for that purpose but when they messed up the rules changed. Well, eventually I woke up and left that church and those who learned to trust me also left bc of how I was treated for wanting to move on. The youth ministry went to zero. They still struggle with just a handful of die hards. They took advantage our family in many ways.

When we got together I asked him and he told me that he was encouraged not to teach the Book of Revelation because it scared people and they wouldn’t come to church. So I said you mean fewer people fewer tithings? And he said yes. So I said you are not teaching a book in the Bible because of money? And he said I have to pay my bills the churches bills. Then, we decided to adopt some older boys with special needs from China. We decided that the money it cost us to adopt these boys would come from our tithing money because we were not adopting with a motive to grow or "complete" our family, but because we wanted to change the lives of some orphans who had practically no chance of finding families of their own. There is no Biblical model of a single pastor church, where one person stands in front of a seated group and gives encouraging and witty messages week after week. These practices arose from the Greek and Roman customs of oratory and are not rooted in scripture. Paul is speaking of traveling ministers and evangelists when he is referring to supporting the ministry financially, as one cannot easily hold a job while constantly on the road. See Corinthians for guidelines on the meeting of the believers, which was participatory, all inclusive, met in homes, and included a complete meal shared by all. Elders, plural, were those older in the faith who taught and encouraged the younger men, as the older women taught the younger. I believe the recent crises in large church congregations and mega church pastors are simply God returning the meeting of believers to the Biblical model. Judgement begins in the house of God. We are His house, not the building.

One thing is to give also of your time to God. I’m still pondering that, but I do believe that this is correct. He will lead me. Thank you!

I appreciate what you have said about the spirit of the law. To me it's more simple than that. I believe that God gave me everything I have, and He expects me to use what He gives me for His kingdom sake. Therefore, my hand is open to give my tithe and offerings to my Church and other ministries that are worthy of my support as God gives me wisdom. The biggest obstacle to giving to me is this; how big is your God? Is He big enough to provide for your needs in spite of your giving? Yes He is! Regular tithing and giving stretches our faith and allows us to see God's provision up close.

You see a person who is struggling trying to find God but does not have any money to give. naturally what will happened is that person will be frowned upon, turned into an outcast, and called a non believer for not being able to give money to that church. *Deuteronomy 14:25 talks about exchanging tithes into money*
Disobeying the word of God when it clearly tells us to both Tithe and give offering (Offering is what you give freely not grudgingly because it can be significantly more that tithing, you can give a house to the church, a car, more money and whatever) Tithing is fixed and it's 10% of your increase, yes the only increase you get is what? That's right, a paycheck.
The old way of gaining increase was owning cows, seeds, farming. In return you tithed from that! But today trading has changed, so if you do not pay tithes from your increase, you are clearly disobeying God 100% no questions asked. Deuteronomy 14:25 talks about exchanging tithes into money, if the (livestock and seeds for tithing are too heavy to carry while transitioning). This gives you an insight that God allows and allowed tithes to be of monetary form, which is very crucial in our modern day way of giving tithes to the Levites (Pastors as we call them today). Explain Then how are we to support Levites of today "Pastors"? With cows and seeds? Remember you are supposed to tithe a 10th of your increase, yes it applies to your paycheck as it is an increase. Confusing tithes as offering and offerings as tithes is a mistake. A tithe is a tithe an offering(giving) is an offering. We are supposed to do both but you just want to omit tithe but then pretend you're tithing as offering. Where is your tithe, bro?
Read Deuteronomy, that scripture was kinda written for modern day life, or could be applied for a time like this. In that scripture they were transitioning so it was written for a transitioning period. But for us it still applies because we have transitioned from old form of trading commodity to a new form of exchanging goods, we don't use cows or seeds to tithe for the form of trade today is physical money, actually we shifted now to digital money to trade. Thus pay your tithe with the current mode of trade! I'll paraphrase Deuteronomy 14 but will post the verse in full context...."if you are not able to carry your tithes, then turn it into money", read Deuteronomy 14:22 but really starting from verse 25".
      Deuteronomy 14:22
Thou shalt truly tithe all the increase of thy seed, that the field bringeth forth year by year.
23 And thou shalt eat before the Lord thy God, in the place which he shall choose to place his name there, the tithe of thy corn, of thy wine, and of thine oil, and the firstlings of thy herds and of thy flocks; that thou mayest learn to fear the Lord thy God always.
24 And if the way be too long for thee, so that thou art not able to carry it; or if the place be too far from thee, which the Lord thy God shall choose to set his name there, when the Lord thy God hath blessed thee:
25 Then shalt thou turn it into money, and bind up the money in thine hand, and shalt go unto the place which the Lord thy God shall choose:
26 And thou shalt bestow that money for whatsoever thy soul lusteth after, for oxen, or for sheep, or for wine, or for strong drink, or for whatsoever thy soul desireth: and thou shalt eat there before the Lord thy God, and thou shalt rejoice, thou, and thine household,
27 And the Levite that is within thy gates; thou shalt not forsake him; for he hath no part nor inheritance with thee.

Remember that some mega churches have preachers that make money off of book sales. Not all of the Preachers at these churches get a salary from the church. Also, many of these mega churches do amazing works all over the world. Basically, what we give is our business with God and that is all. We are not to worry about what someone else does with the money, but leave the up to God. and our job is to be involved in the church to help make the difference. Basically, don't worry about it. Its on them with God if it has been handled wrong. Stealing happens in small churches as well.

What do you think about ministers travelling around the world & church people are expected to pay all his expenses? If he stays in a luxurious hotel, eats at the most expensive restaurants - is that really where tithes & extra offerings should go? Personally, as much as it is nice to meet & hear other ministers within the same church affiliation speak - I'd rather use my 10% to buy food for a widow or someone in need. What if people got together using their 10% to buy 1/4 acre or 1/2 acre of land & build a few small houses for a few widows who like to garden? They could plant a big garden together to have food for themselves, food to give to the minister & food for those without any. Some churches frown against giving someone in their own congregation help because they believe those in the church should not be struggling & if you are, then you must not be giving enough money & that God is not blessing you because of it - does this make sense? They want you to pay 10% plus give a special offering each week. I give to those whom I see that are in need whether inside a church congregation or not. Most widows receive nothing from any church but those same churches will buy toys to give each child many toys while there is next to no food in the house. Food banks will give a person with a small child more food than they will a widow even though that child may not be eating solids yet. Just like people think all widows get a lot of money when their husband dies. That only is the case if the husband decided if he wanted her to have money. In some cases, there are husbands who want to be with another woman so he finds a way to force the wife to leave & then makes out to other women that his wife left him - regardless of who left, they are still married even after 25 years & the children are grown up. If you get divorced & the husband dies then the ex-wife gets nothing, the sons are made to foot the burial costs but the husband's new companion of whom he has not married gets everything. Why is that? If a man & woman divorce & the husband dies, that woman is still a widow. He is no longer here & so she could not go back to her husband. If the husband decides he doesn't want to look after the wife in a good way - do you honestly think he would be a good husband to the companion? A man usually leaves his wife for another a woman who pretends she wants to sexually be with him when really, she is only after his money or hopes he will gladly spend his money on her & look after her children but most seem to not be willing to look after his own children with his wife. Some women are actually smart enough to realize the reason why the wife left him in the first place ... A woman usually leaves a husband because of the mistreatment or abuse he has done to her. So give to whom you think or know needs it.

It was by asking pastors that i learnt this, what is being preached today about giving 10% of your salary is a bunch of bolagna, it pretty much was a law given to moses to help the less fortunate around them, the rich were living well, poor were dying because they had nothing, so to mitigate against that everybody gave 10th of there possessions, whether it was cattle, gold or whatever, so it vould be distributed evenly so no one would be wanting for anything. I have no clue why preachers aren't telling persons the truth, makes me wonder what else aren't they telling us.

The church rents a section of a former Christian university in my state. It seems odd to me that preachers will say you MUST tithe because it is the LAW. They will point to the Old Testament and say, "This is God's law, so you had better pony up." Then, in their next sermon, they will preach that Paul tells us that if you adopt the Law, you have no part of grace. So if you circumcise your son because of the Law, you have no part of Grace. If you keep a kosher kitchen because of the Law, you have no part of Grace. But you'd BETTER keep the Law where tithing is concerned.

Deuteronomy 14:25 talks about exchanging tithes into money
You do your part, what the Pastors do with their tithes is up to God to judge them. If they don't help the homeless, the poor and needy while they live lavishly and look down on the poor, it is not your concern! You do your part and do what God tells us to do by Tithing and Offering faithfully.

No verse refers to “grace law” because there is no such thing. I suggest you say this because you do not know what either grace or law really is, as YHVH says in the Word.
Most Christians ought begin with understanding how the Bible defines sin. “Everyone who practices sin also practices lawlessness; and sin is lawlessness (Torah-lessness).” 1 John 3:4
      Grace (from YHVH)
Faith (in Yeshua - Yah saves)
Obedience - to Truth (Torah)(via the Spirit)
The 2 summarize the 10 which summarize the 613.
“This is His commandment, that we believe in the name of His Son Yeshua Messiah, and love one another, just as He commanded us. The one who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. We know by this that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.” 1 John 3:23-24
“Here is the perseverance of the saints who keep the commandments of God and their faith in Jesus.” Revelation 14:12

Where are the examples of New Testament believers tithing? Where does it say in the bible to convert food to money? The tithe is to be given to he Levites. A pastor is not a Levite. You are being disobedient, and that is sin. Tithing is gambling. You say "If I give God will give to me." This is gambling and you are telling God what to do. You are adding to the word, bible - Jesus. When we add to the Bible we subtract. All is sin. Please repent and do things God's way. You are practicing a tradition of humans. Stop being scammed.
      Lies are sorcery.
Tithing is a lie. You are under a spell with illusions, delusions, and mesmerized.

    • @theire483

There is no New Testament church concept for tithing. Tithing was never money, only foodstuffs, and the tithe goes to levites only.
There are no levites in the NT church of the Bible to give then or now, all are priest.
The NT example of giving (is not tithing). It is found in 1Cor 16:1,2; 2Cor 9:6-8.
There is no NT church tithing principle in the BIBLE. The NT church gave as it prospered.
There is also no NT script that says the minister cannot also have a secular job.
Are you a Jew, still under the OT? You are NOT a tither, you just have been lead by false teachers to think you are. Do you give 10% of all.

Any teaching from Scripture especially about money is very important as the Love of money has caused most of the problems in our society. The expression "Follow the Money" is true in every aspect of life. Both good and bad. Money in and of itself is just a tool. It is in how we use it. I have been a "tither" for close to 35 year. I have no regrets as God has always blessed my giving. He gave me everything I have and am happy to share with the ministry and others. 10% is a great baseline number (for me) that God has Never increased in Scripture. The taxing authorities in our country take WAY MORE than 10%. God deserves the "First-Fruits" and out best offerings. I am not at all refuting the teaching in this video. The Word of God is true. On the other hand, there are so many people that give very little to help the ministry and are only consumers at our churches. I feel sad for them, that they don't receive the blessings of giving. Honestly, if you are in a position to be able to give, you are blessed. Freely you have received, Freely Give. Money, Time, anything you value when given to God will be multiplied. Lay up treasures in Heaven.
