Alex, it is late on a Saturday night. I am a 74 year old male who has some back issues and struggles to get swing speeds with my nine iron above 65mph. This afternoon I was talking to my friend, a PGA Master Professional, about my lack of swing speed. He knows my swing very well and told me, again, I was losing leverage during the down swing, mostly in my wrist set. He told me before about flaring out my back toe which didn't help that much. I watched your presentation here and heard the technique of pulling the back leg back a little to give oneself more clearance. I jumped up and went to my little "indoor range", set up my swing radar and started practicing the swing with those adjustments. The very first thing I noticed was a definite improvement in the the swoosh sound being more in front of the ball and much more distinctive. After about 10 practice swings I turned on the radar. Swing speed jumped 10-15 mph with about 20% less effort(it got to 83 twice)! That made me very happy. Of course it didn't happen on every swing but the more I practiced the technique the more often it happened. Now, I have to take it to an outdoor range and see what the real results are, but I am very optimistic I will like the new yardage and hope it will carryover to my other clubs. Thank you. And, yes, I will mention the back foot back factor to my pro.
This is very nice to hear. More speed - less feeling of forced effort. Wonderful! Keep going and yes indeed, use things that work for you and don’t always apply what you are told. Results and feelings are yours
A follow up report. I went to the range today eager to put the technique to a real test with full swings and real golf balls and real flight patterns. I am happy to report there was an improvement however inconsistent...it is new you know. I still had a tendency to hold on to the club through the impact zone resulting in pushes. I don't feel like I am releasing the club as well as I did last night at the indoor range with electronic numbers. I will say, happily, when I did strike the ball properly, I was one to one and half clubs longer. So, there is hope. The trick is practicing. The old saying "Practice makes perfect" is a lie. Practice makes permanent...perfect practice makes perfect.
I think this is probably temporary. the key is how you allowed the club to stop and stay in the same position in the backswing because you felt less stress, due to a larger hip turn. key on that!
Thank you Alex, I'm 64 and played yesterday using your tip regarding slightly turning out the right foot, what a difference it made! It just felt right and I hit more straight drives than I ever have! Great tip 😀
Hi Alex, I am 67 years old from Malaysia. I watched your video for the first time today and that's after watching many many other guys out there over many months. You are the only person out there who mentioned about brushing the golf ball like it's done in tennis. Made a whole lot of logic. Can't wait to go out to the range and try it as I have always been smacking the ball flush with no distance.
What great videos, simple tweaks, but so affective. 12 handicapper in my late 60s now down to single figure just by simple changes and thought processes.;thank you 😊 Steve

Best instructor on You tube by miles Alex! Your explanations on ALL your blogs are easy to try out as you keep it simple and to the point! I - even at 70 years of age have always tried to hit the wee ball 300 yards off the tee and am sure many at my age have tried this throughout their golfing years! This past week I have created a shorter backswing with no white knuckles showing and just insuring I swing with the hips first towards my intended target with arms and torso following behind! We old guy's never had video tuition in our day's, so we are late learners in Finding a rare nugget like you who has taken and given thought for us old yins! I take my hat off to you Sir! Very kind of you to say so Alan! Delighted to hear you’ve got the results you wanted so far 😄 let’s keep at it and I’m sure we can improve distances and the other areas to play your best and have the fun!

You are the first instructor that I have ever seen that seems to have nailed my issues straight away. Not sure if you can fix me, but I am impressed (-:
Just found this site. Very impressed with your method. I have optishot in my house like yours so off to try this now. I excepted the fact that at 71 I have lost distance but with a smother swing like you have maybe it will help with the aches and pains after 18 holes. Thank you and looking forward to more senior lessons from you
Unbelievable you have described my swing totally. I’m 79 and no matter how hard I try to swing faster I still can’t increase my swing speed or distance. Thank you for this very informative video. Hopefully I can correct my swing and improve my results by follow your instructions
Very nice. I like that you mention Harvey Penick….my favourite! Your instruction is worth trying. At 62 I’m getting a bit stiff. I have achieved better swing speeds slightly differently. I allow my hips to turn a little more by letting my left foot come off the ground so that I can get behind the ball. This has given me phenomenal results with my woods….I use a 3 wood to a 13 wood 😂. But I’m still trying to hit to hard with my driver with sometimes poor results. Let me try your method. Thanks Alex.
Please do give it a try and let us know how you get on. We have many lessons and even complete programs for golfers who are a little more experienced in life 🏆🏌️♂️
Great video! I am 71 and have struggled for years with coming over the top and hitting at the ball. I took a video of my swing 2 days ago and was horrified watching it. I started swinging a club in the livingroom while watching your video and amazed how free the swing felt doing what you said to do. Going to the range later to start working on this. Thank you for making this video.
At 80 you have covered the areas I need to focus on. I do watch every video you make and you have given me a much improved swing. Please keep doing what you are doing! Best regards
Alex, have enjoyed your videos this morning. Senior golfer here, single digit handicap. I believe I've come to my "game-changer" swing adjustment, similar to your keeping the club face moving longer in the backswing towards the target, but through a slightly different method....one I've seen tour players promote. That is, to begin the weight transfer towards the target BEFORE you have completed the backswing. This has been great for me, this "coil" action, allowing for my left arm to drop into the inside slot consistently at impact and with much more power ... would love to hear your thoughts on this. Thanks, Robert
@@TheArtofSimpleGolf Alex, many thanks for your prompt response - appreciated. Yes, the video you linked captured what I was referring to as my new (and god sent!) coil move; and right at 7:20 of your video. Really amazed how the swing really flows so naturally and powerful once this pelvic move is made... the emphasis, for me, is (again) to begin the move as the backswing is in motion, before completion. Great stuff, your emphasis on simplifying the golf swing...
Love this thanks Alex. I'm not a senior golfer but someone with back and knee issues I'm trying to smoothen my swing without losing distance. Think this will help 👍🏻
I just discovered AOSG and really like what you've been saying. I'm an 80 y/o golfer who shoots anywhere between 79 to 99 (this season) on any given day. I'm still trying to regain some of my lost distance and tend to swing too hard and get the inconsistent results that you spoke of. This swing tip is so simple and I can't wait to try it in the backyard, the range, and on the course. Thanks for a great video - not too complicated but good simple advice.
Well we are happy you are here now :) That’s the goal…er us know once you try it and we have other lessons that should be very useful for you too. Here on RUclips or in our club . Cheers!
Best young man, I was away and could not play golf for one year, started now missed you a lot, You my best coach and friend . I have learnt a lot from you, Thanks so much, I call you young man as i am over 70, Love you my dear
Alex! I like the right foot flared, right leg back on the backswing to gain more width. Also like the idea of allowing gravity take over on the downswing and letting the club do what it is designed to do without our manipulating it. Excellent video for the "experienced golfer."
Very detailed and simple explanations like your video on coiling rather than turning. Coil is a word that suggests power better than turn. In addition I love your explanation of the split hands drill because it slows the arms up and allows the body and arms to synch, extend and the wrists to unhinge naturally. Just like the name of your series, it's the art of simplicity. These two videos are the best you've ever made. Please make many more!
Really excellent descriptions here, 63 and still have around 95-98 mph club head speed. My speed has dropped slowly the past several years, been working on exactly what your describing on my own. Certainly not with the clarity of intent and result that your describing so well. Makes many things click, can’t wait to hit some balls and play today. Well done!
Hi Alex just watched your driver for seniors video from 2 years ago, looks like just what I'm looking for , it's a mental thing as much as anything for me as I do try to hit it that bit harder with Driver, off to the Driving range hopefully keeping my swing smooth and simple Many Thanks - Garry B in Manchester
It’s so funny man! When I was a young man my Grandfather (who was a scratch player) could easily outdrive me and hit towering iron shots. I was pretty strong in those days and could never figure out why I couldn’t outhit my Gpa when I’m 25 and he’s in his 70’s. I think you’ve finally explained it in a way my hard head can understand. I’ve got a few drills of yours memorized for the practice range and I’m hoping to see some real improvement. I normally shoot in the mid to upper 80’s and now at age 59 I’ll let you know how it goes. Thanks you seem like you’re really passionate about teaching and sharing your knowledge.
That’s neat! Effortless power and solid strikes should always be the goal. Glad to have helped you this far and keep at it sir and keep us posted. Our online club might be the next port of call for you :)
Alex, I definitely fall under the category of rushing the downswing. It seems that my mind tells me "OK, you're at the top of the backswing so let it rip". I feel that this is the only way to increase my club head speed. A day or two after watching this video I decided to go to a heated outdoor range (it's January and I live in Wisconsin so it's quite cold) and just work on flow and smoothness in my swing while trying very hard to control that top of the backswing anxiety. I was surprised that my driving distance actually increased on average by 16 yards. The swing felt so effortless and I could actually feel the weight and mass of the driver head as I released the club. Incidentally, my swing speed went up about 3 mph. Thanks for the great lesson, it really does work quite well when I control my anxiety to want to mash the ball from the top down. I have to convince myself that the swing is a sequence in it's entirety rather than just from the top down, this was the key discovery for me. Smooth is fast. Thanks again!
Exactly the goal! Very happy to hear you tested it and it really can be a general game changer. Keep at it and I’m sure we can help you progress further .. here or on our website/programs. Keep at it ;)
One of your best videos! Please take this to an irons discussion. That’s where I struggle with hand path and release, especially on wet, sloppy turf. Thanks!
Thanks, Alex! I think I got the same result yesterday by just feeling the right wrist go from extension to flexion through impact. The seemed to get the arms to be straight at the right spot and get me to turn through better. I think my tendency has been to hold the right wrist in extension through impact instead of releasing it.
I am a senior who lives in France and your senior video driver is fantastic. can you make a video on senior irons? Thank you again for all of your videos.
Alex... Very simple and easy to understand. I always seem to start out my season doing what you have illustrated but as the season goes on I tend to start forcing my drives. I am 68 and really want to focus on what you have offered for advice. THANK YOU!
I am senior casual golfer, Yes, I usually have the feel of rush down from the top of my backswing, and when I accidentally put my right foot a little bit forward ahead of my left foot, the ball went all over the place ( many times way to the left side), .... your tutorial seems very natural and easier for my body, I tried it on my backyard (just swinging without the ball) and will surely try it on the golf course, thank you very much for this great vid
That's the goal! Thanks for the background and I do think by the sounds of it, that this approach, along with some other minor tweaks we share here could help a great deal. Cheers!
As a 72 year old man, I love your effortless golf swing to gain more distance at my age. Yes, I am that person who in consistently rushing his downswing trying to get more distance. Excellent video showing techniques to increase distance! (Thx for posting) I find that if your not somehow physically disabled. The ultimate strategy is to get more flexible… work on a stretching program. We tighten up as we get older…
I've only come across your site last night and immediately and immediately liked you as a person and they way you explained your lesson in a language we oldies understand.I immediately subscribed keep them coming.out of curiosity where are you based, anywhere near Southend?
I currently have all of the issues that you address in this video. I've managed to completley screw up my swing after watching other instructional videos, which seem to be out of the range of my current flexibility, and as you say they hurt !. What you say makes a lot of sense, be down the range tomorrow to try them out, also going to give your iron striking drills a go too.
@@TheArtofSimpleGolf thanks Alex. I have played 2 x 9 and the tips (hold arm straight after contact) has helped a lot. I love the forehand tennis shot feel. In saying that I am having a bit of trouble closing out the swing and not getting any draw shape and leaving some out right. I’ll keep practicing in the shed and work it out I have to give you a massive rap. I’m 56 a 10 handicap (was lower). who has struggled for 5 years now to get back to any consistency. I have watched a lot of tutorials including almost all the performance golf series and you have an exceptional ability to communicate a message simply clearly and with empathy. I am determined to stay with your tips and really feel it can help me love the game a bit more again Thanks for taking the time to make these videos and help us out here Cheers Marc from Australia
Thanks, I gave your tips a try and hit “ straighter and with good distance”. At 65 ,my mind wanted to muscle the shots. The 10 o’clock take back was more than enough to get a 225 - 250 yd drive. Trusting the weight of the club proves to be the key to better golf, for me. Great video, thanks!🏌🏻♂️🎯
Alex thanks for the video so easy to warch and easy to understand , following a triple AAA open surgery couple of years ago been struggling in the mind and on the course cannot wait to test this out, l practice in my garden and then take it to the course....thanks for your common sense approach will let you know how l get on cheers Jeff.
He's also had back issues for many years. Although I must agree that in his generation of players, he had the sweetest swing that every amateur wanted. He was, at 1 time, the longest driver on the tour when he was known as "boom boom" & that's when drivers & fairway clubs were still wood. The "Big Easy" Ernie Els has the same type of effortless looking swing, producing a lot of power. I'd take either of those swings eight days a week.
My issue is how to get speed where it needs to be rather than 6 feet before impact. I don't cast from the top & don't roll my wrists but get no woosh after impact so I'm obviously not building speed from the top. How is it done without pulling the club down & swinging too hard? I'm not purposely using only my arms.
Thank you, sure you hear that often, I'm 52 in May , had shoulder surgery last year. the video about shorting your backswing and this one has help me so much is scary, alot of the videos online are to advanced for a guy like me. lol, I know you have thousands of subscribers, but it seemed like you you ere talking directly to me, thanks again, Im interested in becoming a member, just not sure what package is best for me game...
Alex, your videos, have been a great help. I am a senior golfer and your lessons are the best I have seen, I even made my own "aussie down under" and that has helped immensely. One problem I can't get rid of is not finishing my swing on my left side. I still tend to finish with way too much weight on my back foot. Do you have a video in your library that addresses this problem ? Thanks for your help, and please keep up the good work !
Thanks Alex for the quick reply. I was checking you videos and found the one on hitting through the ball. The drill of bringing the right knee up to touch the left one has really been an eye opener for me. Thanks much
@@TheArtofSimpleGolf been implementing your coaching here into my swing over the past 24 hours. It's working. Just dropping the arms. Whipping sound past the ball strike. Glad you liked it! It’s amazing when you smooth it out what can happen
Alex! I like the right foot flared, right leg back on the backswing to gain more width. Also like the idea of allowing gravity take over on the downswing and letting the club do what it is designed to do without our manipulating it. Excellent video for the "experienced golfer."
Well that's super to hear!
Very good tip .Everything explained simply and logically .Thanks
Delighted to hear it! That’s the goal and glad you’re with us 🏌️♂️👍
A gem of a lesson. If I were in the UK I would be living at your teaching center. Thanks.
Appreciate that... P.s I’m in the USA :)

Thanks!
You bet!
Why thank you and really appreciate the feedback. I will be bringing more that’s for sure;)
Well done!
Great and glad it’s resonated! Please let us know how it goes 🏌️♂️👍
My swing speed went from 66nog it 81mph!!!! That’s my first time trying this, my goal, 90mph! I’m 74 years young! THANKYOU so much!!!!!
Very well done Sir! Keep at it:)
Hi Alex just watched your driver for seniors video from 2 years ago, looks like just what I'm looking for , it's a mental thing as much as anything for me as I do try to hit it that bit harder with Driver, off to the Driving range hopefully keeping my swing smooth and simple
Many Thanks - Garry B in Manchester
Keep at it ;)
Such a great piece of instruction
Glad to hear it resonated
Brilliant video. Simple and clear. Thank you.
That’s the goal! Hope this and others we have help you . Keep at it :) Thanks !
One of your best videos! Please take this to an irons discussion. That’s where I struggle with hand path and release, especially on wet, sloppy turf. Thanks!
Thanks my friend and will do!

Thanks, Alex! I think I got the same result yesterday by just feeling the right wrist go from extension to flexion through impact. The seemed to get the arms to be straight at the right spot and get me to turn through better. I think my tendency has been to hold the right wrist in extension through impact instead of releasing it.
@@jayschwarz4365 that sound correct! Just be wary of flipping
Can this swing also work for your irons?
It all made perfect sense......now to the range for practice.

Thank you so much for the tip on the right foot and shallow angle 👍🏽.
More than welcome and hope it’s helped!! sorry for slow reply too ⛳️

Merci mon ami!
Great instructions ,wlI try it out next time I play and will let you know how it went.
Please do!
Nice tutorial , I am 66, arthritic, and you just made my day easier, more relaxed, and an amazing improvement!
This made my day :)
Alex...
Very simple and easy to understand. I always seem to start out my season doing what you have illustrated but as the season goes on I tend to start forcing my drives. I am 68 and really want to focus on what you have offered for advice. THANK YOU!
Great Instruction Sir , Exactly what I neede to see and Hear , Thanx !!!!

This instructional video is very helpful and I will begin doing the 2 steps drill at the dome(indoor range) tomorrow. 🙂👍
Excellent to hear it resonated Hohn. Hope this helps and let us know how it goes 👍🏌️♂️

Great tips, I definitely feel like I get more jumpy T the ball. Looking forward to trying this out this weekend.
How did it go? 🏌️♂️
I am a senior (74) who lives in U.S. and your senior video driver is fantastic. can you make a video on senior irons? Thank you again for all of your videos.
Sure thing!
Excellent video showing techniques to increase distance! (Thx for posting) I find that if your not somehow physically disabled. The ultimate strategy is to get more flexible… work on a stretching program. We tighten up as we get older…
It certainly helps for sure!
I've only come across your site last night and immediately and immediately liked you as a person and they way you explained your lesson in a language we oldies understand.I immediately subscribed keep them coming.out of curiosity where are you based, anywhere near Southend?
Delighted to hear that and to have you with us! I am from UK and do make visits and clinics back there. In the USA rest of time
Great advice thank you for the help
Happy to help! 💪🏌️♂️
Thanks Alex. WOrks very well for me! Rgds
Great video. Yes I've been told to wait for it.
Well I’m glad to hear it resonated and please do let us know how it goes 💪🏌️♂️
Very educational. Simple yet easy to follow. Thank you.
No. Thank you :) hope it helps you specifically!
I've been turning my shoulder to the left this entire time. Thanks for the tip!
That can work... if at the right time.

I’ll keep practicing in the shed and work it out
I have to give you a massive rap. I’m 56 a 10 handicap (was lower). who has struggled for 5 years now to get back to any consistency.
I have watched a lot of tutorials including almost all the performance golf series and you have an exceptional ability to communicate a message simply clearly and with empathy.
I am determined to stay with your tips and really feel it can help me love the game a bit more again
Thanks for taking the time to make these videos and help us out here
Cheers

Thanks, I gave your tips a try and hit
“ straighter and with good distance”. At 65 ,my mind wanted to muscle the shots.
The 10 o’clock take back was more than enough to get a 225 - 250 yd drive. Trusting the weight of the club proves to be the key to better golf, for me. Great video, thanks!🏌🏻♂️🎯
Keep it up
I’ll give it a try, thanks!
New subscriber here. Once we’re out of lockdown I’ll be giving this a go. Seems simple, well explained.
Thanks and welcome!!
Best “driver feel” I have ever felt ! Heading to the range to try it out !

Sorry for late reply! I’m sorry to hear you e had some struggles but glad you’re with is. Hope it’s helped!
Thank you so much Alex
More than welcome!
This is why I love Fred Couples as he has that great tempo and swing at impact & not at the top of the swing.
Well said
He's also had back issues for many years.
@@mikerodrick2430 damn right!!
@@mikerodrick2430 try some right arm only swings and make sure you just open up and clear out the way... don’t let arms crash into you
Thank you, sure you hear that often, I'm 52 in May , had shoulder surgery last year. the video about shorting your backswing and this one has help me so much is scary, alot of the videos online are to advanced for a guy like me. lol, I know you have thousands of subscribers, but it seemed like you you ere talking directly to me, thanks again, Im interested in becoming a member, just not sure what package is best for me game...
Hi there ! And yes I’m talking to you :)
The club is the best value and helps because you have each department of the game covered.
Glad to have you with us and that able to help! Try the step drill. Or the open set up

Something that's been working for me since this video is to think. "It's all about the swing". The ball is incidental. Thanks again.
