My father would have been extremely thrilled to watch this! He had joined Air India when the airline had operated the DC-3s, the Vickers Vikings, the Connies and Super Connies. And when Air India had entered the jet age when it went in for the Boeing 707. He, along with some others, had been sent by the airline in 1959 for training in UK. You see, the earlier versions of the 707 had Rolls Royce engines
I think I knew your dad!
@@Cy_Shroff Really?
@RAJANI SHENOY On his behalf, a BIG Thank you, Rajaniji!
@RAJANI SHENOY, That's such a wonderful thought!

60 years to this footage!! Times of pure analog flying instruments.
Really saddens me to look at the shambles the Air India is in today.
For me, analog will always be better than digital, even being born in the Digital age.
Absolutely
Air India...had the best service and the most beautiful yet kind Air Hostesses. Hope to see the same again.
Air India was once upon a time, the king of all airlines along with Pan Am and other legacy airlines. Hope to see it rise up again.
Yeah, it was once upon a time,alas... no more hope.
It was fantastic airline when it was run and owned by JRD Tata until it was nationalised in 1978. Now it is appalling
@@ce7545 Hello Boss it was nationalised in the year 1953.. video you are watching is in 1961 at the time Air India is owned by Government of India... 1978 is false information you have... Please go with the air India history...
@@ce7545 Government used to have one more nations pride that is INDIAN AIRLINES. In the year 2007 both national carriers got merged and formed as AIR INDIA LIMITED
@@ce7545 First know the fact please... Don't pass false information
What a marvelous ancient civilization. Contributed so much to our advancement. A worthy operator of the 707.
Air India the MAHARAJA, was one upon a time the best airline. In fact, the time it was the best airline was called the golden age of air India. All the businessman used to travel with air India only. AI introduced a very unique cabin and air hostess dress which any other airline cannot do even today. Fly the Maharajah! The best! Also it’s service was the best at that time, however, it’s the worst today.
Thank you for uploading. My dad worked for Air India and I have many fond memories of the 707s. I was not even a teenager then but followed everything about Air India in detail. In those days AI used to have a daily flight to New York. New York bound flights were odd numbered and returning flights from New York to Bombay were even numbered. AI 101 was on Monday, AI 103 on Tuesday and so on so this flight, AI 108 would be Bombay bound flight leaving New York on a Thursday. The flight landing in New York could not have been an even numbered flight. I believe the pilot in command was Captain Guzder. He was also the pilot of the very first Bombay London flight by Air India, using a Lockheed Constellation back in 1948.
+cambridgman You're very welcome. :-)
WooW ur lucky sir....u must be of my Dad's age and ur Dad must be a Grandad now.
plz give him my salute for serving our country.
i never flew in 707s but ur lucky if u have ever.
peace,love and respect sir.
Thank you Flight Reporter for your kind remarks. Yes, I am pushing retirement myself and my dad passed away several years ago. He started his job as an employee of Tata Airlines, which operated out of Juhu "Airport" and retired after seeing introduction of the 747s! I am delighted that young folks such as yourself are interested in the aviation history. I will be happy to scan and send you my dad's employment offer from Tata Airlines if you write to me ; cambridgman@gmail.com.
what a wonderful memory of your dad..
was that flight nonstop? probably not..it was via London right?
I flew Air India in 1964 from New York to London. It was great. My father flew on their Connie in 1950 from Rome to Cairo.
This video made me nostalgic about my first trip on Air India. In 1982 I flew from Montreal to Delhi via London on Chandragupta Maurya. In those days Air India planes were named. 747-747-237Bs were named after emperors--Ashoka, Shahjehan, Rajendra Chola, Vikramaditya, Akbar, Chandragupta Maurya, Kanishka (bombed out by terrorists in 1984), Krishna Deva Raya, Samudra Gupta, Mahendra Varman, Harsha Vardhana, Shivaji & Narasimha Varman. 747-437Bs were named after temples--Konark , Tanjore, Khajuraho & Ajanta. 300B4s + A310-300s were named after rivers--Ganga, Godavari, Kavery, Yamuna ,Teesta, Saraswati, Beas, Gomati, Sabarmati, Narmada & Krishna. Each name was followed by a line--"Your palace in the sky." Indeed, elegant, sari-clad hostesses served the passangers royally. As Chandragupta neared Delhi, we heard the announcement in Hindi, which was soothing to the ear--१२०००km दूरिकी यात्रा समाप्त कर चन्द्रगुप्त अब देहली पहुँचा है. Since then, I have flown often on Air India; and I must confirm--its service still ranks among the best in the world.

Bombed in 1985 not 84
Wow 55 years ago..how sophisticated even then..air india is a great airline..
in those days it was a private company before it was nationalised - it was part of the Tata group and was founded by the Tata's
Air india was great airline not now
It was owned by Tata
Thats gotta be a scary ass job. Landing with almost no plane guidance at night except the controller literally guiding you every step of the way. The ultimate tension
It’s actually comforting to know that you’re relieved a little of having to rely on so many instruments when you have a good experienced controller talking you down. It’s called a PAR, Precision Approach Radar for a reason & existed for times when that’s perhaps all you may have to navigate down to the runway. I flew the military version of the 707 in the Air Force, the old KC-135 Tanker, which still flies to this day (with upgraded fan engines of course).😊✈️🛫🛬😊
I was on this flight . It was awesome. I can't forget how great the in flight entertainment was . Especially the movies in the screen.
Used to fly these 707s to wherever my dad was based at the time, and back to boarding school in India, in the late 1960s through 1970s. Many a happy transit through the old Centaur Hotel, and the Sea Rock / Holiday Inn.
Interesting. The 707 suddenly became a DC-6 6:00-6:15. No stock 707 takeoff footage available in 1961? Also, the AI magically became TWA on touchdown. At least it was a 707.
lol for real wtf
There are no stock 707 clips
at 10:12 notice that the Boeing 707 was marvelous plane, it could change its dress while in air. this air india flight changed its dress, and landed as TWA !
😂😂 Really funny you are absolutely right
My mum was just a about 10/11 in those days. And I can clearly see it was when many people were nicer and a lot more trustworthy in those days.
I worked as a Flight purser in those 707 aircraft for nearly 10 years. Lots of fond memories flying as a cabin crew. Our 437 with Rolls Royce engines and 337 aircraft with P And W engines served the airline for nearly 27 years.
Flight AI 108, I boarded this flight at London Heathrow airport on 20/09/1974. The aircraft was a Boeing 747, VT-EBE, Emperor Shajehan to Bombay for an overnight stop connecting with British Airways flight BA 920A to my destination at Melbourne Tullamarine airport. One of my life's adventures.
Tell me more about the service of Air India back then. Right now it’s in shambles
Hi, I found their service to be excellent. Bear in mind that a few years earlier, a seat on a Boeing 707 was very expensive indeed and service had to be the equal of top restaurants. The coming of the Jumbos brought ticket prices down with a proliferation of bucket shops in London. I bought my ticket from schedair at Coram street, Russel square W1, I doubt if they're there today.
I see that with fewer people traveling on aircraft owing to the pandemic, airlines are going to have to step up to the plate as regards service.
Wow. I am in awe. Such a beautiful aircraft. And such classy, skilled people is all I see here. My upmost respect to everyone in this awesome video. Thank you so sincerely for uploading this great clip.
Thanks Classic Airliners for the upload of this golden age view. Long enough ago to be old timey, yet still easy and fun to relate to. I flew on TWA 707s in the early 1980's. Also have a couple of flights on Sunbird DC-3s in Kenya.
Thanks!
This little movie is fantastic!!!! Everything from the elegant narrator Alistair Cooke, the highly professional and dashing _Air India_ crewmen efficiently going though their crucial checklist procedure, the sharp-minded New York ATC guys, to the beautiful _Air India_ Boeing 707-437 with its sleek turbojet engines.
Good ol' Alistair Cooke himself! To me, having grown up seeing him on television weekly, he seemed a part of the firmament. Alas, not so, but getting to almost 98, good show!
Dead Frt + West
Oops, nearly 96, but amazing just the same. The things he saw and experienced in his lifetime...
Brought back fond memories from childhood when Air India was king of the skies. With Tatas acquiring Air India hope to see it reclaim its lost glory.
India Long live
I proud to be a Indian 🌹🌿🌹🌿⚘🌹
Fantastic video, as always! Thanks so much for sharing! LOVE your channel!
another interesting and hard to find clip of the airline industry from 1961 concerning safety. great period piece and nice shots of classic airliners of the time!
Aviation industry faced too many challenges and went through far journey. Planes had so many safety issues like no auto pilot system, low altitude rides, slower, too much turbulence, noisy, highly expensive etc. We are lucky to be here in modern times.
He said Air India 108 so many times 😢.. Pilots were versatile.. Air India 💚
How to destroy a great airline - let the govt get it's hands on it .
And how to save it? Get its hands of!
٢٠١٩ we found 🐀
Hi demtrous
It was already in government's hand.
@@ratulxy nah it was private before
Thanks for uploading such an historical video.
Nice vintage documentary style. And Alistair Cooke!
The commentator was the famous journalist Alastair Cook. Much appreciated for his talent, sofisticated and critical but gentlemanly analysis
A fine example of Surveillance Approach Radar approach.
Very rare footage! Excellent job. This is pure classic jetliner porn
chakka saala
Danger monkey 😹😹😹
Wow... The landing procedure was tough.
That flight crew has some pretty epic beards, envious!
Always Air India 😊❤🇮🇳
Interesting that they show a ground-controlled approach. ILS must have been long available at the time of the 707.
+pinkdispatcher Interesting indeed
+pinkdispatcher If i had to guess they were demonstrating a precision approach radar approach just because its more dramatic than an ILS. Must make for good television.
A very exciting time to fly in the new jets.
Sad to see one of the oldest airline is going to be sold now . Hope air India would stand up again if Tata purchase it . As Tata group was the real owner and founder of air India
RR 707 of Air India!!! My favorite one!!
Although it was different aircrafts. I loved the NYC Winter setting in the presentation. At the end I got the feel the plane landed at 530 pm
Awesome footage and those magical Boeing 707s!
Beautiful vintage films
Now again TATA Sons take over Air India with more brand new largest number of Boeing & Air Bus air craft in history. All credit goes to Mr. Ratan Tata.
I was wondering about that approach also. There is a video originally from 1947 ,I think, of a Constellation in which they show an ILS into La Guardia.
I love to watch Pilotseye videos. But this old movie is amazing!!!! Traffic air dispatchers operated absolutely different:)
Pure goosebumps.
This video is pure comedy GOLD, couldn't even be bothered to edited together even the same type of propulsion in the take off roll. One moment they are rolling four crude jet engines and then at V1 the aircraft which was supposed to have been a 707-437 becomes a four engine, piston powered propeller aircraft at 5:58.
Those gloves on the captain and FO, oh yeah, style was king back then... smh .
our Air India proud of me
Who is the handsome Indian pilot? Can I know his name please? It is really so emotional to watch that too of 1961 year air india flight.
None of them are Indians.
Captain is Gazder and the co-pilot is Adi Kapadia
Excellent and informative video !
Our pride 😎😍😘❤️💪🇮🇳
Thanks a lot for this!
Fantastic video
Great team work
Back in the days when AI was a really good and respected airline (at least from what I have heard, I would not be born for another 7 years), unlike today.
As always really lovin these vids, keep em' comin.......
cameraman655 What are you trying to say? Air India is still good and respected (kinda)
I like Planes They have been falling from grace, especially after they mergered Indian Airlinea into them
It didn't prevent Air India to suffer from a few crashes including at least one with a 707 which weren't very reliable aircrafts.
It had its great deal of glory in the 20th century, the private players with their sophisticated service (Kingfisher for luxury and indigo for budget) hit its market, also a the major factor was government lethargy to manage it properly.
I can't understand how pilots and air traffic controllers communicate because I can barely understand them maybe it's or maybe it's there accents
+Jaden Desveaux It's just a matter of training. Just learning the phraseology and listening to it again and again. It has changed a bit over the decades, but the basics are still similar. Just go to LiveATC.com and start listening, and get the FAA or ICAO phraseology documents, they should be available online.
Probably around 90% of it is just standard phrases.
Typically (for visual flights rules) it goes something like this:
(Me:) "Delta-Echo-Hotel-Alpha-Bravo, at holding point Alpha, Runway 2-4, ready for departure"- (Tower:) "Delta-Alpha-Bravo, right turn approved, Runway 2-4, cleared for takeoff, wind 270 at 7 knots." - (me:) "Delta-Alpha-Bravo, right turn approved, Runway 2-4, cleared for takeoff."
The Air India pilots have extremely good English.
Alistair Cook being very English.
5:51 ( dramatic music) F.O. " Vee Van!" - Rotate 😆
******बहुत सुंदर वि डी ओ बनाया सर बी-707 तो नहीं देखा पर मेने डीसी10, फोकर फ्रेंडशिप। एवरो48। वाइसकाउंट। आदि जहाजो को देखा है।*****🙏🌹❤🇮🇳❤🌹🙏
I wonder how many planes clashed then or got hijacked 🤔.
What year is this? 60s? Seems the plane is a bit more modern than the 50s..
Was that Air India touching down?
Fantastic
these seats look way more bigger and comfortable compared to todays economy seats
Lovely Stuff!! Thanks!!
Just curious as to why the pilots seem to be wearing dark gloves (as seen when they are moving the throttles)?
There was snow on the ground; perhaps they ran a cold cockpit.
Was this commentator Sir Alistair Cooke?
What airport was the Air India flying from? iowa or Ottawa
Love this
Can this be re mastered in colour
Bread n butter miracle completed
Very good job
good slice of time
It was basically British-India airline.
This is from 1960! A long time after Britain was forced to leave India!😀
All airtraffic controllers in suit n tie- when did all this everbody in Slacks n polo happen?
Superb video
That poor 1st officer got no flying time!
the narrator... Alistair Cooke?
+Hedley Rainnie Yes, Alastair Cooke! I think this might be from the tv show he hosted called "Omnibus."
strange how they take off from Nyc and land in NYC with the same flight number!
You lost me at 6:05 when a piston airliner rotated. The subtitles are a hot mess as well.
Each and every one in the video..may your soul rest in peace..
You never some of them must be alive
How come same ATC for landing and take off ? If anyone has answer he/she is genius ...
which airport is this?
akcortin2 Idlewild, now JFK Intl
Is that Sam chui sitting behind and vlogging ??
Hehehe
They took off and landed from Idlewild?!
imagine A plane is about to take off and pessanger sitting next to you say its a problem to be managed while taking off .
59 years no major changes in airlines onley the chages made on control instruments upgraded and slight changes in design
0:01 G-APFE ?
108,000,000 flights in 1960?
Varanjie lol unlikely
5:59 is that a turboprop?
Air India best....

Air India has had it’s fair share of accidents and incidents over the years, check Wikipedia.
