Test the Highland Model 3 Performance against any M car but you can’t use Track Mode with the Model 3. Use Insane Mode and heat the battery and then it will win.
@@LearningFast the point of a U-drag isn't for it to be one sided, that's no fun. It's supposed to be close. Also, they can only run cars that they can get a hold of and Tesla famously doesn't lend models out to testing for anyone who might say something negative. So unless they buy one, Teslas won't be joining. So on the plus side you should see a cybertruck on the strip, once it stops breaking long enough to get a clean run. Which I actually expect to be pretty decent. If the brakes last long enough to get a reading. In fact, I feel like being wrong, I'll call it now. Based on what I know about the cybertruck, I'm guessing it will do the acceleration just fine. However I am not expecting good things in the braking zone or in the corners. It's top speed of a little over 100 mph will also hurt it severely on the final stretch. So I'm guessing it will be a couple seconds behind the KIA EV6 GT. Which I believe will put it near the R1T on the leaderboard. So that might be a race. Thirdly, you don't get to set the conditions for races. Edmunds does that.
@@roguedogx I will gladly lend them my Model 3 Performance for the test. It runs upper 10s in the 1/4 mile with a depleted and cold battery. It will do just fine as long as they don’t artificially cripple it by putting it in Track Mode.

Tires make a HUGE difference in performance. Pilot Sport 4S tires are much better for speed than what was installed on the i5. In my i4 M50, there's a very noticeable difference in performance between the stock Pilot Sport 4 tires that came with the car and the Pilot Sport 4S tires that I replaced them with.
For everyone complaining about the non x-drive M4 the answer is obvious. They wanted to make this a more fair race. The x-drive M4 would’ve murked that tank. I mean look at the results here lol. The M4 x-drive would probably beat the new M5 as well. 🤷🏾♂️

As an owner of the i5M60 and previous owner of an M5 Comp and the older M3 I was very pleasantly surprised just how well the big, heavy i5 took the corner, it was on par with the considerably lighter M4 Comp. Considering one is a full fat M car and the other an M-Lite EV it was much closer than I expected. Had the used the RWD M4 the i5M60 would have won it by a mile.
Performance aside, there was a time when I absolutely hated the buck-tooth front end of the M4 and M3. now that I've seen the i5, I'd take an M4 in a heartbeat. The new BMW EV lineup is hideous.

Well duh. The 5 series isn't meant to be fast but it is. It's more of a luxury sedan daily driver. The m4 is the rwd version and not the far faster xdrive. To put it into perspective they got 0-60 in 3.8 sec for the rwd and the XDrive does it in 2.8 sec and a 11.0 quarter mile @125mph.. comments like these just show lack of car knowledge. AWD vs RWD in a straight line is a massive advantage to any car.
Almost forgot to guess before the race started. While i think the i60 will have the M4 off thr jump, i think that's were its advantage will end. Thr M4s better tires and brakes will give it the advantage at thd turn around, and the return trip will see the i60 peg.
It's pretty ridiculous you gotta push the break, turn 7 knobs, press 4 buttons, do a retina scan, rub your belly, and pat you head just to get it in certain modes

And I am glad that you didn't run either of these cars against a performance crossover or SUV, even if racing a Hyundai Ioniq 5N would have been a closer race. I would like to see this M4 raced against the new Tesla Model 3 Performance, even though it is priced against the much quicker and faster Model S Plaid.
This m4 ? Why would u want to see a RWD m4 vs an AWD EV and not the far faster Xdrive m4. If u wanna see what would happen watch hagerty latest vid and check the leaderbaords. The m4 comp xdrive is above the model 3 performance with a time of 11.0 @125mph.. and that's not even on a drag strip or the new LCI with more HP.
The 5N certainly is a better car, but that BMW leases better than the 5N. Hyundai is massively underperforming right now in sales on the 5N due to this. Hopefully they come to their senses as a lot of EV buyers tend to lease.
So the 5N is only 2 sec faster and the 5 series is far more luxurious and comfortable to drive with better tech .. thats a compliment to bmw. I don't think u understand what a 5 series is meant to be.
@@Outcastiid i don't understand why people are leasing an EV in the first place. You buy an EV to try and save money on gas and maintenance cost. If they limit your mileage in a lease, it's just not worth the extra money you are paying for the EV. Ev's are for people that drive min 20-25k miles a year. I almost got the new ioniq 6 limited but the high price just didn't justify the deal. And I'm driving 25k a year.
@avis1978 No, I do, because I currently have two and am looking into getting a 5N. Leasing is also very popular due to the cheaper cost due to not having to directly take the hit on predicted residuals and not worrying about repairs out-of-warranty. There are other very, VERY quick EVs such as the Model S Plaid and Lucid Air GT that lease about the same as the 5N. It's an amazing vehicle, but the cost to lease isn't worth it currently.

Despite not being very quick, the i5 M60 also will make all your passengers vomit for the first couple months until you master how to feather the throttle. There's absolutely zero smoothing calibration

BMW do not want the EVs to have more power than their M variants make the I5 M60 kinda low value especially you when you upgrade to m60 because you want more power. We all know that EV horsepower is a lot easier to achieve and You could get a Model S Plaid or a Lucid Air Touring with less money but more Horsepower😂

Please, please, please try the new Tesla Model 3 Performance against any stock M car you want. Just don’t test the Model 3 in Track Mode and it will hold its own. If you heat the battery it will beat any of the stock M cars.

Just a Small Comment… when You use in race Alfa🍀 put in Manual… not leave in automatic… those people🤦♂️. Will be bit better for Alfa for sure.. making batter the stop before the corner and moving aut. In race auto gear doesn’t work well and this is correct as to Be in Manual usign the beautiful Metal Paddles and not the plastic paddles of the Cadillac

Unfortunately Edmunds has chosen to NOT race the Model S Plaid. But you are right in saying that the Plaid has amazing acceleration at higher speeds, being the same or quicker than the top Ferraris and Lamborghinis above 100MPH.
See taycan turbo gt .. porsche obliterated the plaid. (Pascal bernatchez turbo gt) non weisach pack running a 9.15 quarter mile. With weisach pack 8.9...
Everyone having a winge about Edmunds not using an xDrive car needs to realize that it simply might not have been available for loan from BMW. Yes, it would have been faster, but it still won. Relax.
Not worth it for speeds that no one sees on public roads. Porsche did it to make launches consistent which is why it shifts so soon, but 99% of driving will never see a return for the cost and complexity. These EVs do 0 to 60 in under 3.5 seconds easily. ICE cars need launch control to match them.
Sometimes i think BMW are doing a huge favour on purpose for cars industry when they made the New 5 Series/ M5 and so, i think they are sacrificing their own car just to save the other cars and brands, like hey look the M5 and 5 Series are not selling and no body like them like they used to be, it failed !!
A few pointless notes: -they should have used the xDrive M4 but I don’t blame Edmunds. They can only access the cars in BMW’s review fleet, that’s on BMW for not making the AWD car available. -I am still shocked at how ugly modern BMWs are. I don’t care about the cope from auto journalists (“IT GROWS ON YOU!!!!”), the front of the G80/G82 M cars is totally unacceptable. The i5 I looks terrible. BMW should fire their design chief and beg Albert Biermann to unretire and come back. -just as shocking as the appalling exteriors is how much modern BMWs weigh. The entire performance car world (particularly in the EU) laughed in 2008 at the GT-R’s kerb weight but now every European car is at or over 2 tonnes. I get that batteries weigh a lot but it is completely unacceptable that the G90 M5 weighs more than a F-150.

The 2000 pound heavier EV catches the M4 and passes it in the turn but loses on the straightaway…how does that work?
Base Tesla Model S is quicker than both of these cars. I’d love to see the non-Plaid comparison in a U-Drags.

Just a Small Comment… when You use in race Alfa🍀 put in Manual… not leave in automatic… those people🤦♂️. Will be bit better for Alfa for sure.. making batter the stop before the corner and moving aut. In race auto gear doesn’t work well and this is correct as to Be in Manual usign the beautiful Metal Paddles and not the plastic paddles of the Cadillac

BMW quoted very high or max Horsepower numbers for the M60. Its nowhere near the level of speed for EV with identical HP numbers.

Unfortunately Edmunds has chosen to NOT race the Model S Plaid. But you are right in saying that the Plaid has amazing acceleration at higher speeds, being the same or quicker than the top Ferraris and Lamborghinis above 100MPH.

Two speed gearbox solve this problem of top end speed in EV easily
Not worth it for speeds that no one sees on public roads. Porsche did it to make launches consistent which is why it shifts so soon, but 99% of driving will never see a return for the cost and complexity. These EVs do 0 to 60 in under 3.5 seconds easily. ICE cars need launch control to match them.
Maybe the new i4 M50 will do better?
Sometimes i think BMW are doing a huge favour on purpose for cars industry when they made the New 5 Series/ M5 and so, i think they are sacrificing their own car just to save the other cars and brands, like hey look the M5 and 5 Series are not selling and no body like them like they used to be, it failed !!

A few pointless notes:
-they should have used the xDrive M4 but I don’t blame Edmunds. They can only access the cars in BMW’s review fleet, that’s on BMW for not making the AWD car available.
-I am still shocked at how ugly modern BMWs are. I don’t care about the cope from auto journalists (“IT GROWS ON YOU!!!!”), the front of the G80/G82 M cars is totally unacceptable. The i5 I looks terrible. BMW should fire their design chief and beg Albert Biermann to unretire and come back.
-just as shocking as the appalling exteriors is how much modern BMWs weigh. The entire performance car world (particularly in the EU) laughed in 2008 at the GT-R’s kerb weight but now every European car is at or over 2 tonnes. I get that batteries weigh a lot but it is completely unacceptable that the G90 M5 weighs more than a F-150.
