Completely agree with the review. I was recently faced with a decision when buying a new car. Just couldn’t take the risk with electric so got an M340i Touring instead. Drive it across France to Switzerland and averaged over 40 mpg, so over 500 miles on a tank. Stopped for 5 mins to refuel and drove on. Cannot recharge at home and public infrastructure a lottery. Need real world range of more than 400 miles and public charging in under 15 minutes. Then it starts to look more interesting.

When it will be the same as gas the price for charging up will be equal at first.
Then, they will just add a markup for charging to keep rolling car prices further to the moon.
Then, guess what? It will be declared that the demand of lithium is great and create deficit on that, making car prices skyrocket even further.
And then you will have to change your battery to a refurbished one, because all others are unavailable, reducing the power of the vehicle.
It's just a world wide fraud.

I wouldn’t be upset with EVs if we simply had a choice. They know sales would be barely nearing 10% at best in the future if they didn’t plan to ban ICE cars. All that EV marketing is trying to compensate you with useless technology and "innovation" for lacking the actual driving experience. It’s like an automotive cuckholding. And the worst part is that EVs are more detrimental to the environment than ICE vehicles, it’s just removing pollution from one sector and tripling it in another.

Battery technology got much better in the last years, especially in the materials needed and recycling. But the general concept of everyone owning a car is sadly just not good for the environment. Very true, and keep in mind that EVs make much more pollution for being built vs ICE cars (just compare the weights). All the extra minerals and metals that have to be mined and transformed. Then one has to take into consideration that most of transport pollution are made by industry transporation and not by passengers cars. And in all the graphs they never take into account or show the military industry, I wonder why...

@@emil5598 You make it sound like cars are one of the major sources of pollution when that is not the case. Any port in a city makes more polllution than all the cars on that city. The industry transportation (shipping and others) make more pollution. Also the military industry they have no problem increasing spending on that. Cities are built organically and not centrally planned, they will fail miseribly unless you're on a dictature like Saudi Arabia (but let's see how that will work). NetZero will be a bigger failure than ZeroCovid, though they probbaly will make a larger damage. Increased poverty, inflation, deindustrialization and green colonialism. Max. In a short road review you have encapsulated the utter dillemma of owning and running an EV. Especially a high performance one with 600 bhp like this I5 ! Yes, it goes like stink but if you use that performance for any length of time, your range disappears before your eyes ! Where is the fun or the sense in that ? Not sure what the manufacturers are doing here in pushing out these new EV's with lots of power and with incredibly exorbitant prices. . They make no sense at all.
I have just watched a raid test by Harry Garage of a new SUV made by Lotus. Even the cheapest version puts out 600 bhp and costs almost £90,000 ! And this by a manufacturer who made their reputation by building lightweight, well handling cars that didnt cost the earth and many ordinary punters could afford.
I am 76 years of age and been a car nut for most of my life. At present I run a Audi Q8 55TFSI bought new in June of this year. It is my second one and the firts time I reluctantly had a foray into the SUV world.....mostly because of ease of access for my aching old joints .
I bought it mostly because I do an extensice road trip to Deutschland twice a year where I do some significant miles. Ok, it "only " has 350 bhp compare to the outputs that soem of the EV's are producing. However, even at average speeds of 80-120 mph on permitted Autobahns, my Q8 will give me a range of almost 600 miles.
So, I can make my home in Hampshire, to the Eurotunnel site in Kent and then onto my firts stop just outside Dortmund with ease without having to refuel. It s a combined mileage of almost 500 miles. I would predict that I would need probably 2 and maybe 3 visits to a charging point to do that journey. That would probably put 2 possibly 3 hours onto that journey time.
I really cannot stomach that much coffee and until newer technology is developed which substantially increases the range of an EV I will stick with my ICE.

Thanks for your comment. Good input and kind regards from a big Lotus fan and driver. It all ends with the Emira and I‘m sure they‘ll shut the Hethel plant after this. Lotus Engineering might survive, but that‘s it. The rest will be badge engineered EVs from China.

Good points but when I purchase cars I go by the 90 percent rule. Does it work well for 90 percent of my demands? So for two trips a year you could always rent a car. Lastly I would never buy an EV. With leasing, I’m not married to yesterday’s technology and especially with EV being in its infancy I think it could be a huge mistake

    • @myles6235
      @myles6235 5 месяцев назад

There are already EV's with 500 miles of range. The Lucid Air (100,000 euro) will get you your entire journey with 1 short (less than 30 minute) stop at a charge. There are certainly more to come in such a competitive market. Even a much cheaper vehicle, like the Tesla Model Y Long range, will get you there in 2 short stops. I have road tripped thousands of miles in my Tesla, never stopping for more than 30 minutes at a charger. I would hardly call 1 hour added on to your twice yearly trip enough of a downside to surpass the plentiful upsides of owning an EV. For 99% of driving, an affordable EV is much more convenient than a gasoline car.

I have noticed that most of the new 5/i5 reviewers are so impressed in their reviews and just a few mention the cost savings, it is clearly that BMW invest a lot of money to PR and reviewers, instead of investing them into the quality of their product. Also they have no interest to reduce the prices (they are even increase them) because they are selling their cars like hot cakes in China and US and they increase the profits for the share holders by making the interior cheaper (compared with G30).

The front of the car still makes me cringe, but spending an hour in person looking at it made it more tolerable. The interior is another story; I despise the large display, poorly integrated into the console. The comfort seats in my G31 make me dislike the new ones. Cheap plastic is everywhere. I'll stick with my G31 until the next generation. Also, I hope the electric car hype ends soon; I'm tired of paying double taxes for driving diesel with lower carbon emissions than a petrol engine...

We'll see how well the EU plans for the desired EV transition holds up in the upcoming 5-10 years.. I still don't see it happen as currently planned.. I think we'll need a hybrid transition periode first.. Also right about the i5 M60 being pointless.. If you want a EV 5-series, just get the i40.. Best 5-series overall would probably be the 550e, which combines best of both worlds.. Like I said, hybrid is where it's at right now..

I really, REALLY appreciate how straightforward and to the point you are with criticizing this EV, not beating around the bush at all. Majority of car youtubers look like they are doing everything to sugarcoat and not touch the subjects of obvious and glaring downsides of EVs these days.
Reality with EVs as of 2023 is this - people will not switch to electric cars en masse simply because being on a leash of a battery is simply not pragmatic at all, unless you drive around the city and doing really short runs, and have a place to charge of course. And don't even start with this "battery revolution being just around the corner" nonsense... yea, I've heard that like seven times in the last 15 years or so.
I really like Toyota's approach - full range of types of cars, ICE and EV to year 2050, and then we will see what happens. Free market, it's the customer who makes his choice.
Personally I'm looking forward to developement of hydrogen (engines and hydrogen cells) and synthetic fuels in the next decade or so. Those two make way more sense than all this battery nonsense.

I agree with almost everything you said in the video. However, i would argue that the stated low range is due to your driving style. Just with all BMWs nowadays, the estimated range adapts according to e.g. driving style, temperature and so on. And of course if you drive it really sporty and drive fast on the Autobahn there is less range then „normal“ driving. Of course it may not reach the claimed wltp range but for sure more then you showed in the video. Otherwise great video!
