The price of these good boots have indeed gone up! I've done 2 these past couple years and the first one was full of expletives! Great vid!
Totally agree!
VENTURA … i went L.a trade tech with him ….transmissions west !
Hes the king of freeway flyer transmission,, i still got his connect
That guy is ON POINT....great builder. seen him stack a set of gears in MINUTES. Keyed Splined...whatever he knows his S(@$. He knows gear ratios, racing stuff...totally legit..
I don’t remember how many of those boots I have torn installing 😢. I also have to drop my tranny out for a troublesome leak from the plate. Thanks again Mike.
Oh yea Mega black...to the rescue on those leaks....GONE
On the axle boot install, many years ago I was shown putting boot on to use a paint paddle and make sure it is lubricated ,no chance of poking hole or tear in the boot.then just clean up the WD 40 on the tube.just saying.done it numerous times over many years.good video 😎😎😎👍👍👍
Great tricky tip on the boots. 👍
Mike thank for showing how to do this. Just did mine, put up a little fight but it worked!
With the rubber quality of today this job makes me nervous ;)
FYI they are all either brazilin or german. And they are good quality. unlike the seamed boots. Even if you get empi it is reboxed.
Well thanks for that, I have never done those solid type but found that very interesting!
I also made a short with a really good view of it. I'm doing 1 minute shorts now too on tech
My first almost vw....was my brothers, had colored split boots (empi) that were glued at the seam and both flanges........it never leaked. If only I remembered what the glue was.
Hey man,
Great video. I wish I saw this a couple of months back as I've just replaced my boots. But I suppose with the quality crap we seem to be supplied I'll be replacing them with in the year then I'll try putting the one piece on.
Thanks for sharing.
✌️ Peace from Melbourne Australia.
I have 1 piece on both my busses lasted over 5 years....FYI. We had some seam boots laying around for the green car and I see some trans oil under there Ugg. should have just did them right. when the body was off.
Whoa , very informative! Thanks for sharing this .

My late father used do them all the time at the Volkswagen dealership were he was service manager and and mechanic at but most people chosen the spit boot if the swing axle was still in the car because they didn't want pay the flat rate but if the transaxle was out he installed the 1pieces boot.
The funniest thing my late father told me about the swing axle transmission was this guy brought in just brought the transmission no axles and my father forgot which way the ring gear cameout and guy had a doublecab with4gears in reverse &1forward so my dad losen the mustache bar and pull axles and flip over with out pulling the engine and transmission.
Great instructions
I had a really clean 67 Beetle in Turquoise Blue... with a funked out tranny..... some how I replaced the bad one for a good from a local parts car.... circa 1980...problem solved! Great Job Mike!!
Changing seasons ,You wearing warmer top and it's raining Kind regards Alex
I had these on my rail., Ha! I didn't have to install them!
Lol I wouldnt laugh as your one of the top vw brain surgeons out there. After the vw bus bucket truck yeah.. if only I was your neighbor lol.
Yes sir! I believe the gasket goes with the two little holes on the bottom but then again, that’s probably on later model transaxles. Also, there’s two thicknesses for gaskets/shims. The red ones are double the thickness of the beige ones. Also like you said the torque on the fasteners on those side plates needs to be on point. If overtightened you get the depressions and the inevitable leaks. On the more modern models we were advised to use Permatex Aviation sealer on the outside gaskets and a ring of gear oil resistant silicone around a lip that is just inside the gasket. Not sure how it is on that early model but the later models have a lip all around.
yea the holes may be on the bottom I know they are for different ones haven't done these in a while. The Mega black does wonders for any leak. Since I started using versachem Mega black I have had no leaks in anything.
The holes in the early gaskets told you the thickness without measuring
Great video Mike 👍
The gaskets used to come in several "thicknesses." A little loose is okay, but being too tight is not good. I'm not sure if the various thickness gaskets are still available. Thank you for the video 🙂
slightly loose and I am going with it. ha ha. should be fine.
Heating them up with a hair dryer also helped a lot for me. Makes them much mor flexible.
good idea. It was warm enough when I did it but on a cold day would be necessary.
The best way to actually do this is to remove the cotter pin and press out the tube , fit the boot and repress the end
The trans guys do them this way and they last for years. I have them on my other busses over 5 years and no issues. We did them that way in the 80s and what a PIA....
Maybe soak in hot water to heat them up. Works on handlebar grips.
yea especially in the cold. it goes on there pretty easily
The holes can go anywhere, I think the axle clearance was 4 thou without looking up . The holes in the paper gaskets was thickness nothing else
Oh the holes indicate how thick the gasket is? like the rabbit head gaskets?
Makes me wonder If one could find a constant velocity boot and make that work....better rubber or material??
Ok now ....how long will that boot last? Methods great but does the rubber last 10 years, 5 years,
not to bad looks like only one cut hand
Yeah that's because I was fighting with the camera stand
What a pain to do. I’ll stick with the seamed boots!
Believe me these are so worth it. they last much longer and dont leak when you jack it up.
Hey do u ever work on 02 VW beetles? I have a problem and hoping it's not ecu n need some ones help
No but you can leave a detailed message on my facebook I might be able to help.
I'll say it for you. They are 15 bucks @ West Coast Metric. ;-P I did not catch the name of the trans shop in Torrance. Can you comment on the shop name? I'm always looking for good shops here in So. CA. I do live close by Rancho Performance, but it's nice to have another place that comes highly recommended.
I could not remember the name of it. But the guys name is Ventura. He does work out of his garage on the weekends. I think I have his number in my phone. hit me up at the next show. Thanks steve.
@@Mikefngarage Will do. Thanks.
this method means you have to remove the axle. Only great if your swapping an transaxle. Oh M g that looks like a screwdriver to the hand.
I so hate axle boots. BECAUSE THE DAM THINGS LEAK!!!! Next time IM gonna glue or rtv the shit out of the next ones!!! cv shafts last a dam long time. vw split boots??? .......dont last worth a shit.
